Musician in a ‘shop window’ visits nursing homes

0

On Tuesday afternoon, rapper Glen Faria paid a surprise visit to the Peppelrode nursing home in Eindhoven.

The moving shop window is an initiative of the De Bijenkorf retail chain. By visiting the elderly at home, singer Faria and the department store want to give the residents a sense of togetherness. The ‘window’ went to Maastricht too.

Faria played piano and sang his song ‘Goed dat je er bent’ (‘Nice to have you’). That’s also Eindhoven’s slogan. “While writing it, I was inspired by the images of the empty streets. These are usually nice gathering spots for people,” Faria says.

Festive entertainment at your door

The Eindhoven Arts Centre (CKE) and the Parktheater have joined hands with neighbourhood organisations.

Together, they’re bringing art and culture right to the doorstep of residents in various parts of the city. There will be parades with live music and theatre and dance performances. These will be travelling through the streets of Eindhoven from today onwards.

Every evening, under the name Warme Winter Stoet (Warm Winter Parade), a different neighbourhood will be surprised by these performances. The will continue until right before Christmas. The last one will be on Wednesday, 23 December.

Supporting local organisations

The idea was born from all the upcoming public holidays. Because of the anti-corona measures, gatherings with loved ones are out of the question. The CKE and Parktheater,  therefore, decided to support the various neighbourhood organisations.

“This year’s holidays are going to be weird. So, there are no big family Christmas gatherings. No o dancing in the new year. No friendly neighbourhood activities. That’s why we want to bring a little warmth and light to the neighbourhoods in a different way,” Wikke Peters and Marjon Reus, of CKE and Parktheater, say.

“In the dark days before Christmas, we’ve organised all kinds of great activities. These are on the initiative of the neighbourhood organisations. All, of course, corona-proof.”

Dual purpose

“These activities have a dual purpose. Not only are we bringing warmth to people’s doorsteps. We’re also allowing dozens of artists to make a meaningful contribution to the city at a time when the culture sector is struggling,” Peters and Reus conclude.

These activities are made financially possible by Woonbedrijf.

Hanukkah celebration to take place at Stadhuisplein

0

Eindhoven’s Jewish community will host a small, scaled-back Hanukkah celebration at Stadhuisplein next week. This is in light of the current coronavirus regulations.

Hanukkah is a major celebration in the Jewish calendar. It lasts for eight days and nights, usually in November or December. This year, it will begin on 10 December and end on 18 December. Hanukkah commemorates the Maccabees’ (a group of rebel Jews) victory over the Syrian army. After a three-year war, the Maccabees reclaimed Jerusalem and their temple from the Syrians.

During the ceremony at Stadhuisplein, candles on the traditional seven-armed menorah will be lit. Rabbi Simcha Steinberg and Eindhoven’s mayor, John Jorritsma, will give speeches. In line with coronavirus regulations, there will be no live music or large crowds.

Eindhoven’s Jewish community is growing. This is partly due to the increasing numbers of Israeli expats who come to work in Eindhoven’s high tech industries. The community appointed its own rabbi in 2017.

King to celebrate King’s Day in Eindhoven next year

0

The Dutch royal family will celebrate King’s Day in Eindhoven next year. This was announced in a press release by the Government Information Office today.

On 27 April 2021, the King and members of the royal family will travel to Eindhoven for a special King’s Day celebration. The celebration abide by coronavirus measures, although it is currently unclear what measures will be in place in April 2021.

Brainport Eindhoven will develop the program wilth ‘design and technology’ in mind. A spokesperson says they will develop a program ‘for a wide audience that is in line with the coronavirus regulations in place at that time’.

Eindhoven City Council expresses its pride that Eindhoven is the royal family’s chosen city. A council executive says that the royal family chose Eindhoven because of its ‘strength in design and technology’. The council also express their confidence that they will be able to offer a ‘corona-proof’ and ‘inspiring look at a hopeful, beautiful and human future, a future in which we jointly develop answers to major social issues’.

Royal visits during King’s Day traditionally involve the royal family taking part in a tour of the city. However, Eindhoven City Council say that this does not really fit with the DNA of Eindhoven. Instead, they are planning a more ‘hybrid, digital’ King’s Day celebration. Their aim is to show that ‘technology does not alienate’ but instead ‘ensures connection’.

Philips extends Rijksmuseum partnership

Philips will continue to support the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam for the next five years. The Eindhoven-based technology group will do this financially, but also regarding brainstorming new ideas.

An example of this collaboration is the ‘Nachtwacht on Tour’ project. The Rijksmuseum brought a replica of the masterpiece to 30 nursing and care homes in the Netherlands. Philips will continue to help the museum by making its collection digitally accessible.

Philips CEO Frans van Houten says,  “Philips and the Rijkmuseum are both brands with worldwide success and deep Dutch roots. Together we bring inspiration from art, culture, innovation, and technology to improve people’s lives. We can strengthen each other in this.”

The director of the Rijksmuseum, Taco Dibbits, is delighted with the continued support, saying, “In this time of crisis, it’s important that Philips extended its long-term partnership by five years. Together, we’re committed to bringing art to the people who can’t visit the museum.”

Philips has been supporting the Rijksmuseum since 2001.

Red balloons and blue skies – Is this GLOW 2020?

0

Residents all over Eindhoven have been wondering what’s going on.

There’s a strange glow in the city. In various places, blue light can be seen. What exactly’s going on is unclear.

There’s much speculation on social media. For example, it could have something to do with the GLOW light festival. This event, in its usual form, has been cancelled.

It would be irresponsible to have a long line of 750,000 people stroll through the city. They’d usually be admiring the light artworks along the way.

Red balloons too?

Red balloons also appeared above buildings in many parts of the city. This doesn’t seem to be a coincidence either. GLOW’s organisers haven’t give any explanation.

But only say, cryptically, “GLOW has asked everyone to make a dot. Children must hang them in front of their windows. The city on people’s roofs.”

Last week it was already announced that GLOW has had people make special ‘GLOW Dots’. This was in cooperation with the Ontdekfabriek and the Eindhoven primary schools.

The city’s children used these to make their own light artworks. Kids and their parents can still take part in this.
