Eindhoven’s Polish community to protest against anti-abortion legislation

Members of Eindhoven’s Polish community have announced plans to hold a protest at Stadhuisplein on Sunday. The group wants to draw attention to recent changes in abortion legislation in Poland.

Poland recently introduced laws which make abortion illegal in almost all circumstances, excluding when a person becomes pregnant as a result of rape or incest.

The plans were announced via a Facebook event, titled ‘Peaceful protest: Solidarity with women in Poland’. Written in both English and Polish, the organisers state that ‘the sentence on women has been passed, but we will not give up and [we] will fight this decision. We cannot force women to make their whole lives one big nightmare’. ‘Let’s show solidarity and support women in Poland… women who cannot decide for themselves because the government has done this for them,’ they continue.

A similar protest was held in Amsterdam last week. So far, almost 200 people have confirmed their attendance via Facebook.

The protest will take place on Sunday, 8 November at 15:00. Organisers urge participants to follow coronavirus regulations by keeping 1.5 metres distance and wearing a mask.

Sadée painting on display in Neunen

0

Artist, Philip Sadée, painted a piece called De Aardappelrooiers (The Potato Harvesters). It’s now on display in the Vincentre Museum in Nuenen.

The artwork is unique because Sadée painted it at the same time as Vincent van Gogh did his world-famous De Aardappeleters (The Potato Eaters)  Sadée was, in fact, a great source of inspiration for Van Gogh. Van Gogh painted De Aardappeleters while living in Neunen.

“Sadée attended The Hague School, and he mainly painted the working man”, a Vincentre spokesperson says. The Hague School was a group of artists who lived and worked in The Hague between 1860 and 1890.

“He was one of the first artists in the Netherlands to paint farmers and fishermen in their working environment. He showed himself to be socially conscious by focusing on poverty and the position of women. That’s how he touched and inspired Van Gogh.”

Purchase

The Vincentre was able to purchase the canvas for a good price. The former owner wanted to auction the work via Art Dumay, a local art dealer. They brought the owner into contact with the museum. The museum was able to buy the work with financial help from the Friends of Van Gogh Foundation.

Director, Simone van der Heiden, is happy with the purchase and how it came about. “We appreciate the involvement of the owner and Art Dumay in our museum.”

You would have been able to see the painting from yesterday, Tuesday 3 November. However, the Vincentre is now closed for at least two weeks as per the latest anti-corona regulations.

Healthy heart lifestyle programme developed

The Nederlandse Hart Netwerk (Dutch Heart Network) and the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) have developed a lifestyle programme.

People with an increased risk of heart diseases can use this programme, via an app, to improve their lifestyle. TU/e scientists will develop the programme further. They’ll use the data provided by the app for this.

TU/e professor and cardiologist, Prof Lukas Dekker, of Catharina Hospital says, “Prevention is the ultimate treatment for many potential cardiovascular patients. The old adage, prevention is better than cure, is very true in this instance.”

About 1,5 million people in the Netherlands live with cardiovascular disease. These diseases are currently the leading cause of death in the country. Risk factors for the development of heart diseases include an unhealthy diet and insufficient exercise.

‘Set own targets’

Research shows that by living a healthy life, you can prevent many of these cardiovascular diseases. Hence the free app. “Each participant sets their own targets,” explains TU/e lecturer and cardiologist, Dr Hareld Kemps of the Maxima Medical Centre.

“If you can walk 100 meters in one day, the programme challenges you to take a single step more every time. The app provides motivational messages and lifestyle challenges. In this way, people are encouraged to get started and above all – to keep going.”

There will be a Samen Gezond | binnen de hartzorg (Healthy Together regarding heart care) online event. It takes place tomorrow (Tuesday 27 October) Participants will share what the programme looks like and what people can do with it.

Live session

After this event, participants can access the programme. People can access it via a website on a smartphone, laptop or tablet. Interested parties can participate must visit www.samengezondhart.nl. The live session begins at 19:00, presumably in Dutch.

The project’s added value is the composition of its participants. The Dutch Heart Network is the driving force behind the programme. General practitioners, ambulance services, and the four regional hospitals make up this network.

Of course, participant input is essential. They must share their experiences in using the programme. How useful is it? What benefits does it have?

Improved cardiac care

Dr Kemps says, “We’ll keep processing this information. We want to achieve an increasingly patient-orientated change in lifestyle programme.” The Dutch Heart Network aims to improve cardiac care in the region.

“The project has enormous potential,” says Dr Dekker. “That’s because scientists from the TU/e have joined. They are studying how we can help people improve their lifestyle.”

Dr Kemps is also enthusiastic about the collaboration. “All the ingredients to make this program successful have now been added. Hopefully, it will have the most important outcome – better health for people in Southeast Brabant.”

Comedy and rock at PopEi can take place

Here’s some of what’s on at Dutch Design Week

0

This year’s Dutch Design Week (DDW) may be entirely virtual, but it is just as exciting as in previous years.

The 19th DDW’s theme is ‘The new intimacy’ –  the search for new forms of intimacy. There must be a new balance. Especially in a time in which, partly due to Covid-19, people have started to relate differently to each other. And to the world around them. Designers show how we can relate to each other and the world in this new reality.

Dutch Design Week has put together seven highlights for our readers.

Flesh Quake

Fleshquake is a video project. It’s not only about freedom of movement and beauty idealisations. It’s also about the critical society. This stems from the desire to challenge and question Western notions of beauty, normality, and decency.

The Self Design Academy

Who are we and who do we want to be? Driven by the lucrative self-help industry, we polish our identity and image. That makes all of us self-designers – there just wasn’t any training for this. But, now with the Self Design Academy, there is.

The Fashion Tech Farm – inspired by LABELEDBY

Discover the latest innovations in textiles and fashion led by fashion industry change-makers, Jessica Joosse and Fabienne van der Weiden. Visit the Fashion Tech Farm to see all these.

New Order of Fashion

These are radically fresh ideas for a sustainable, circular fashion industry. Among fashion graduates, the call for a sustainable and fair fashion industry is getting louder every year. Not only is there outrage about the exploitation of people and the planet.

The new generation of designers also wants to have a voice in the future. NEW ORDER OF FASHION offers a platform for young, recently graduated fashion talents. They have radically fresh ideas for a sustainable, circular fashion industry with respect and meaning for people.

The Ikea Virtual Greenhouse

In this Virtual Greenhouse, Various experts give master classes and lectures. They also advise on how people can create a warm personal atmosphere at home.

Sunseeker

This is a contemporary, sustainable and interactive answer to the static street lighting we know. Is Sunseeker the future of street lighting in the Netherlands? The 500m pendulum of light modules serves as aesthetic signage during the day and guide at night. Sunseeker will soon go live at Victoriapark in Eindhoven.

Kazerne Design Award 2020

Today’s students form tomorrow. Tea drop is a project on sustainable water use. It received the first Kazerne Design Award. South African-born, Shaakira Jassat, was one of the ten nominees who recently all graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven. These works can now be seen in Kazerne.

These are just a few of the events happening this week, until Sunday 25 October. Please visit the Dutch Design website for the full programme.

Virtual Dutch Design Week begins

0

Today sees the start of Dutch Design Week (DDW). However, this year, it will be the largest virtual design festival ever.

“Of course, this can’t replace the physical week,” says Martijn Paulen, the Dutch Design Foundation’s director. “But we’ll continue to scale up the virtual programme. That’s to support the design field as much as possible in creating relevant connections.” Creating these connections is an important objective for the rest of this year and after that.

DDW20 runs until 25 October. You’ll find 500+ 3D Viewing Rooms, talks, and virtual routes. There will also be live DDW TV from their studio in Eindhoven. Designers, professionals, and online visitors to even ‘meet’. This is via live chats and streams by and with designers.

Virtual international main stage

DDW has worked hard in recent months to develop a virtual festival experience. It was initially going to run parallel to the physical event. But, now, the virtual world will become the international main stage.

The theme, ‘The New Intimacy’, is more topical than ever. It reinforces the search for new forms of intimacy in these coronavirus time. The complete DDW20 programme includes an overview of all participants.

DDW20 may be entirely virtual this year. But DDW’s main driving forces – (new) connections and discoveries – are still well-represented. Visitors can not only discover new projects and emerging talent. They can also view graduates’ work.

These are from students at various famous schools. These schools include the Royal College of Art in London and Eindhoven’s own  Design Academy. People can follow one of the virtual routes too.

DDW Talks

DDW20 will be a week full of DDW Talks. These talks cover a wide range of design disciplines. The focus will not only be on popular topics and current themes. They will also look back on the past, and ahead to the future.

Lidewij Edelkoort, Sabine Marcelis and Sean Carney are DDW20’s ambassadors. For decades, Lidewij has been known as the top trend forecaster in the world. She shares the DDW20 ambassadorship with designer Sabine and Sean.

Sabine took the design world by storm with her magical objects and installations. Sean is responsible for Healthcare Transformation Services at Philips. They will share their unique vision on design from their own backgrounds and disciplines.

You can watch the opening on ddw.nl at 11:00.
