Maker Faire Eindhoven a huge success

This past weekend the Maker Faire took over Stadhuisplein. Held once every year in Eindhoven, the fair is a chance for children and adults to explore and try out brilliant experiments and out-of-the-box creations.

The fair brings together novices and experts whose collaboration has created a community that nourishes creatives in all fields.

Some highlights from this year’s fair include, but are not limited to robot races and robot soccer matches, adults and children having washing machine races, and a giant robot made of drums that play music; the hustle and bustle were spectacular.

The event was divided into outdoor booths and indoor fun in the Eindhoven City Hall building, with a room dedicated to games made out of light, and an area for drone flying. There were booths for children to make their own cars and hovercrafts, have robot battles, laser cutting workshops and brilliantly 3D printed statues, chess boards, and automated train tracks.

A family event filled with energy and creativity for everyone, one of the many highlighted events held in Eindhoven, and one that children are highly encouraged to attend, concluded as a success once again.

The Maker Faire is a place designed for creators to showcase their new innovative ideas and creations, and is open for all to present their work. For information on how to become a maker and showcase your work, or for next year’s event program and other Maker Faire locations, visit Maker Faire.

Singing along at the top of your lungs at Levenslied Eindhoven

Not one, but two days of loud singing at ‘Levenslied’ (song of life) Eindhoven.

On the 26th and 27th of August, numerous artists will bring an ode to the sentimental song. National artists like Monique Smit and the Gebroeders Ko and regional and local artists like Ferry de Lits and Django Wagner will perform on the Stadhuisplein.

Just like previous times, an enormous crowd is expected. At that time the organisation had to close the gates because of the crowds. When the maximum number of visitors has been reached, the principle is one in, one out. Visitors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Admission is free again this year. Here you can find more info.

Paul runs Alpe d’Huez – despite his cancer

Eindhoven resident Paul van Tatenhove will brave the Alpe D’Huez in September, as a sponsor campaign for the Matchis Foundation. He wants to collect 100,000 euros with his action. “I like to contribute”

“A year and a half ago I was diagnosed with third-degree melanoma cancer with a metastasis in my left armpit. I had to go up four floors from the ground floor in the hospital to immediately plan an intake for an operation. My first thought was: ‘I will never take the elevator again’. I like to keep fit and running is really my thing,” says Paul van Tatenhove.

Last summer, Paul climbed Mont Ventoux in France while running. “Especially to see what I could do, but it went so well that I also wanted to walk the Alpe d’Huez. At first just for myself, but after a while I decided to link it to a good cause.”

Thijs Slegers

After the message from Thijs Slegers in which he indicated that his struggle was in vain and he called on everyone to register as a stem cell donor, he decided to run for the Matchis Foundation. “I am thankful that I am still alive and Thijs deserves the memory. In addition, I cannot become a stem cell donor myself because of my own illness. It is a good solution to make this contribution.”

The Matchis Foundation is looking for stem cell donors for patients with leukemia or other serious blood disorders. For some patients, a stem cell transplant is the last chance for life. For a transplant, the donor’s and patient’s stem cells must be similar. The chance that two people match with each other is very small, which is why many donors are needed. The money collected from Paul can be used by Matchis for registering, testing and managing the donor file.

Yield

Shortly before Thijs passed away, Paul informed him of his initiative. “He thought it was great, but unfortunately couldn’t do anything more. That’s why I do it myself.” Paul wants to raise a total of €100,000 for the Matchis Foundation. “It is a large amount, but I think it will work out. If everyone donates one euro, we can still raise a large amount with a small gift from a lot of people.” Paul would prefer to ask all supporters in the PSV stadium to donate the amount of one beer to his campaign, instead of throwing the same beer on the field. “In this way we show that football is a sport of fraternisation.”

To raise extra money, Paul will auction sponsored items. “I’m still busy collecting all the stuff. I have already received four VIP tickets for the Frits Philips lounge from Philips, four tickets for a Bavaria brewery tour and EnergieDirect will give me a shirt with the signatures of the PSV players. I will later sell all the collected items through an auction.”

Sponsor run

September 23 is the day Paul runs the Alpe d’Huez. “I deliberately chose not to run it during the Alpe d’Huzes. That doesn’t suit me. You have to pay an entry fee and you need a minimum sponsorship amount. I just want all the money to go to charity.”

Paul walks the 13.2 km up anyway. “Whether I also walk down depends on how I feel about myself. That is even harder, because your body has to absorb all the shocks. If I still feel good on top of the mountain, then I will definitely walk down as well.”

Dutch Technology Festival kicks off again

The Dutch Technology Festival will kick off on Wednesday in the Klokgebouw building. For a whole week, all kinds of activities will be organised to enthuse young people in particular about a career in technology.

There will also be a lot of networking between companies, government institutions and knowledge institutes from the technology sector. According to the organisation, the festival has become the stage for promoting technology.

During the kick-off at Strijp-S, speakers from Brainport Development and ASML, among others, will be present. They will discuss the importance of promoting technology, also to be able to attract enough professionals and engineers in the future. This is of great importance to the high-tech region of Eindhoven.

Night of the Nerds

In the coming week, children and young people can take a look at various tech companies in the region. In addition, they can do tests and set to work on technical assignments. For example, Night of the Nerds is being held at Strijp-S. There, children learn how to programme music, test new games or build their own racing car.

Corona

In recent years, the event was on hiatus due to the corona pandemic. In 2019, the week attracted more than 40,000 visitors.

Eindhoven to celebrate women

0

Next Sunday, 8 March, is Internation Women’s Day (IWD). Activities and celebrations will be held on that weekend across the globe. Here, in Eindhoven, it will be so too.

Eindhoven celebrates IWD on Saturday, 7 March 2020 in the large foyer of the Parktheater. People can attend presentations and performances, network, and simply meet other women. All in a relaxed atmosphere.

This year’s IWD theme is ‘Each for Equal’. “An equal world is an enabled world,” states the IWD website. “Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender-equal world. Let’s all be #EachforEqual.”

Women of various nationalities will present their creative talents at Parktheatre on Saturday. Visitors can also take part in workshops. There will be a ‘meeting point’ where people can connect with women who have developed special projects in diverse fields.

The celebrations will run from 13:00 to 18:00 and will cost €3 to attend. The afternoon is organised by the C.L.O. foundation (Latin American Centre for Orientation). They have partnered with Women Inc and the Alle Vrouwen in Eindhoven (All women in Eindhoven) platform. It is also part of Eindhoven’s centenary celebration.

“Human Tectonics”?? Now I know what it is!

“Human Tectonics”?
Well yes simply put, this is the energy created when there is friction between two contrasting bodies, groups or people. Hmm?

An awesome TEDx event, on 01st February 2019 at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. We learned about social walls, fake news, cyber-manipulation complimented perfectly with the adrenaline rush from world champion dancers, free-runners, hypnotic audio-visual show, dramatic poetry on “a wall is a wall, that can be broken down”, culminating the day with modern percussion music.

Wow, what a day! Brilliantly hosted by Leon van der Zanden, over the Collison, Drift and the Expansion phases happening right now today in our world.

Collison

We kicked off the day with the TEDx pitch winner, Alexandra Auer. She had a very clear message that “every physical wall creates mental walls as well”. Seems we “love building walls, to keep people in or out, to create the perception of safety”. And apparently, our desire to create walls has grown exponentially over the last years. But walls only address the symptoms of perceived fear. She goes on to elaborate that every wall automatically creates mental walls as well, that divides people. Shared a recent experiment of a segregated playground shared by 2 schools, and its effect on the children.
Let’s make humanity great again” was the focus for Babah Tarawally, Journalist and Writer. He was open-minded as he shared his story “packed like sardines at age 4, fleeing from home”. He shared his painful past, with “black and white thinking” over growing up at asylum centers, and challenges that he faced integrating into the western world, especially without the right-papers. Lessons from his grandmother on Ubuntu, that “it takes a village to raise a child”. He urges everyone to talk to everyone, to create a positive spiralling effect on building communities.

According to Andrea Meier, Professor and Fellow of Aged Care, University of Melbourne, our “inward fittings are meant to decline after our prime reproductive age”. She shares her insights from a book from 1870, that clearly outlines our cells are constantly repairing themselves, but after at biological age (around 25), we should expect these cells to slow down. Sadly, our modern day medicine only prolongs our longevity till the next chronic disease! But there are several ways to live longer. Whilst having great DNA from parents helps for but only 25%, the rest is our responsibility. We could choose to live healthy which adds up to 18 years or even consider new medication. One such example was Metformin, which is currently used by diabetic patients, but recent studies show it could be used to reduce the ageing process as well. She challenged us on “ageing, can we stop it?”, interesting enough ….looks like we can!

Drift

“It’s expensive being poor”, according to Don Ceder, lawyer, politician, and top-candidate for Christenunie Amsterdam. Apparently, about 20% of Amsterdammers are in debts. He wants to address this taboo-subject and help people in other ways, instead of just giving money. Sharing personal experiences on the mental, physical and emotional damage that traps people into a vicious cycle that often creates next-generation-poverty. He asks for leadership to take charge of educating people and reviewing the banking systems to reduce the stress of debtors.

Jos de Jong, Entrepreneur in the hospitality business, feels that current competitive markets are missing out on the “the power of staff engagement in the hospitality business”. He shares his personal experience in the restaurant business where chefs on media do not resemble the chefs’ in reality! He took charge to develop a new process of training, connecting, rewarding and enjoying work/life balance. His customers seem to notice the happy ambiance with fully engaged employees, who eat meals together. And his business is doing very well, delivering more than just pure financial returns. He sums up by sharing “the world is greater than the sum of their parts!”

Business with conflict? According to Stefanie Jansen, psychologist and co-founder of the Cocreators, says “fear is never the answer”. There is a simple recipe, “when all relevant parties are actively engaged in the creation of the solution. It will be implemented successfully because it will be relevant to the end-users and supported by all critical parties”. She shared an example “groove.me” using music to teach English to children in the Netherlands, with great success! Stefanie has overwhelmingly convinced us that Co-Creation plays a critical role in addressing current (and future) issues created by Human Tectonics.

Expansion

Aukje Kuypers, Dutch Businesswoman of the year 2018. She was taught at a young age, to “do things that make you happy”, as such she decided to “do something great”. She accepted that sustainability was not a strictly mainstream business. But she wanted a wake-up-call for most business leaders to take up the longer-term view. She took a bold step and successfully led 800 people towards a strategy of zero-emissions and circular economy. Her advice to everyone is simply “trust your intuition, as its always right!”

Marietje Schaake, Dutch politician and Member of the European Parliament, is concerned about politics in the connected world, and the abuse of technology to destroy democracy. She shared several real-life cases in developing countries, where people were tracked and targeted through mobile phones, emails, and text messages. Then she shocks us even further, by adding, “did you know that, all these technologies, used in these incidents were designed for gathering marketing information, only?” Her view is simply that “it should be us that governs a democracy, and not technology that governs us”.

We closed the day with Peter Vandermeersch, Editor in Chief at NRC, who is extremely concerned about the current and future state of journalism globally. The struggle with the various streams of “news”, or even what should quantify as real news? He shared that 40% of Dutch and 70% Americans, do not trust the media. This is entering an extremely dangerous era, where we cannot trust what we see or read in the media, as news can be easily manipulated by technology as “alternative facts”. He was extremely poignant on the future role of journalism, with widespread mistrust. He has a very crisp and clear message, he wants “the public democracy, to step up and force higher standards!”

Next steps?

This was the 3rd edition of TEDx Eindhoven, it was a very insightful experience. A non-stop roller-coaster event with top speakers, entertainment and food. I am already looking forward to the Salon on 13 June, on “Moonshots for Healthcare” .. join us!

Help save the Muziekgebouw

In less than two weeks, the fate of the Muziekgebouw in Eindhoven will be decided.

This venue has been in dire financial straits for years. The Council has given them a deadline of 1 April to get their affairs in order. An appeal was made in a local Dutch newspaper to save the Muziekgebouw. And you can help.

Muziekgebouw employees are inviting everyone to come to the Stadshuisplein in Eindhoven tomorrow (Friday) at 16:00 Bring your instrument and, together with artists such as Lady Aida, and others, let your musical voice be heard.

There is also an online petition that has been set up. “The Muziekgebouw is a wonderful place where employees, music lovers, and musicians like to come,” it reads. “The Muziekgebouw is a platform for music lovers of all genres. It plays an inspirational and connecting role in the region.”

You can sign the petition here and help save this iconic venue.

‘Kermis’ connects young and old in the village’

Swinging around in an attraction or trying your luck. It’s kermis (fair) time in Geldrop and so the youth in particular are having a good time these days.

“This is one of the most beautiful events in Geldrop. It is a celebration of the connection of young people in the village with the older generations”, one of the operators, who is completely in, says.

Moving to Mierlo

When the fair stops in Geldrop after Wednesday, the event will be rebuilt a few days later within the municipality, but in Mierlo. Those who still can’t get enough of it can visit Mierlo from Saturday through Tuesday.

Comedian sells out Philips Stadium – 22 times

0

Comedian, Rob Scheepers, will perform 22 gigs in the Philips Stadium. The first of which will be on Wednesday, 8 July. The funnyman announced this at a special press conference held at the stadium itself.

PSV spokesman, Thijs Slegers, convened the press conference. Former footballers, Björn van der Doelen and Edward Linskens, attended. And Dutch television and film actor, Frank Lammers, joined remotely.

Scheepers has had several shows and can be heard weekly on Radio Veronica. He said he’s the first to sell out the Philips Stadium 22 times. But there are only 100 seats available per performance.
