Because the Muziekgebouw‘s financial problems have still not been resolved, the Municipality has tightened its supervision of the Eindhoven culture institution. This is according to a letter from the City Council.

For years, the Muziekgebouw has been struggling with a structural deficit of at least EUR500.000. The City Council is now again transferring EUR4,5 million to this music venue, but this time under strict conditions.

For example, the Muziekgebouw must present a balanced budget this month already. Also, the finances of the attached grand café/restaurant, Meneer Frits, must be accounted for separately. The Municipality would like to gain more insight into Meneer Frits’ income and expenditure.

The Mayor and Councillors also demand more clarity about the Muziekgebouw‘s back rent, its negative equity, and loan repayments. These loans were recently provided by the North Brabant Province and Municipality.

Furthermore, the effects of a merger with the Effenaar should be re-examined and substantiated, the Municipality finds. Earlier, the Muziekgebouw and the pop venue announced they would join forces, but nothing has come of this so far. First, the Muziekgebouw should become financially sound.
