Bench in honour of liberator Joe Cattini unveiled

A bench has been unveiled in honour of Joe Cattini at the cemetery at the Oude Toren in the Woensel district. The British veteran died this year at the age of 100 and was one of the last living liberators of Eindhoven in 1944.

The ceremony took place when 686 lights were lit at the war graves in Woensel. This is a worldwide tradition, which also takes place every year at the military cemetery in Mierlo. Honouring Cattini was an initiative of the September 18 Foundation. The regional veterans organisation was also present.

Honorary citizen

Cattini died in April this year. In January he was declared an honorary citizen of the city. After D-Day in 1944, he went to the Netherlands via Paris and Antwerp. With other Allied soldiers he liberated Eindhoven and villages in the region. This happened during Operation Market Garden, the Allied offensive against the Nazis. He also fought during the so-called Ardennes offensive.

Procession

Cattini was praised not only for his struggles on the battlefield, but also for his efforts after the war. For the Briton, World War II did not stop after the collapse of the Third Reich in May 1945. Thus, he was a regular visitor to Eindhoven. Cattini then attended the traditional torchlight procession and visited schools, to pass on the story of the war to new generations.

discollected art sale moves to new address

Would you like to buy a beautiful painting that was previously hanging in a museum for next to nothing? This is possible in the new store of the Onterfd Goed Foundation, (disinherited goods foundation) which will open in Eindhoven in May.

“There is a gem here for everyone,” says foundation director Jolande Otten. “We once had a collection of Russian broadcasting equipment here.” But that kind of stuff is an exception. In general, it is mainly works of art and books that are offered. You can take a work of art with you for a maximum of 150 euros. Anyone looking for standard art will be in for a rude awakening. No paintings here with a red English telephone booth or two zebras. “Here you will find unique works of art by Dutch artists.”

Previously in art collections

But there are also toys for sale that were previously on display in the Toy Museum in Oosterhout. The offer changes depending on what comes in. Everything is pre-owned. “We are a like a thrift store, but a very chic one.”

Work is still going on in the building on Willem van Konijnenburglaan. Employees unpack boxes and put them on the shelves. In five weeks, more than four thousand objects were moved from the old building at Sectie-C, where the foundation was located for eight years. That building is being demolished.

Unknown

The foundation’s store is still relatively unknown to the general public, whereas thrift stores are increasingly busy these days. “We really rely on word of mouth advertising. Once someone comes to us, they are pleasantly surprised. He or she often returns a few weeks later with their children or grandchildren. So the fame is growing, but it could be much better,” says Jolande.

According to Jolande, the fact that many people have not yet found their way to the shop of the Onterfd Goed Foundation is also because many people think that art is unaffordable. “We show them that it is affordable.”

New owner

The objects to be ‘discollected’ are chosen by the trustees of municipalities and museums who wish to keep their collections up to date. Those object, if not deemed ‘national heritage’ are sold. They are sold cheaply because no profit has to be made. It is a way of ensuring that objects the museum wants to replace end up with a new owner.

Avoid the City Center tonight

0

The Eindhoven Municipality has called on motorists to avoid the town as much as possible tonight (Wednesday).

They are expecting heavy traffic in the city centre. Because of Dutch Design Week (DDW), it has been much busier in the city. The Champions League PSV-Tottenham Hotspur duel will make it even more hectic. This game starts just before 19:00. It is also evening rush hour around this time. The Municipality advises truck and car drivers to take alternate routes when possible.

Supporter areas
Special areas have been designated for PSV and Tottenham Hotspur fans. The Markt and Jan van Lieshoutstraat are to be used by Spurs supporters. Stratumseind, Stationsplein, and Dommelstraat have been appointed to the PSV fans. Portable bathrooms, among other things, have been placed on the Markt. During the afternoon and evening, there is a complete glass and can ban in the city centre.

During the football game, there will be no city buses on PSV-laan. They will drive via Boschdijk. It was agreed with the DDW organisers that the DDW taxis would avoid the area around the stadium before, during, and after the game as much as possible.

At Fontys Sporthogeschool (Fontys Sports College) on Anton Coolenlaan, there is a free P & R. Here you can park between 12.00 and 16.00 and then take the free bus to the city centre.

Durga Puja celebration in Eindhoven Oct. 12-14

0

“BongHoven” an Indian group (formed by Bengalis, from the eastern part of India) are celebrating the second edition of Eindhoven Sharad Utsav.

Its the festival of autumn and celebrated in India, especially in Bengal for almost a week. Sharad Utsav, also known as Durga Puja is a religious occasion to worship the supreme goddess, Durga, which glorifies women power. But for Bengalis it is more about fun, socializing with family and friends. People dress up in new clothing, visit the decorated marquee, participate in the festivities, and feed of mouthwatering delicacies.

This year the Eindhoven Sharad Utsav is celebrated from 12th to 14th October at wijkcentrum blixems (Ouverture 2, 5629 PV Eindhoven). Bonghoven is also organizing an Indian Food Festival on the 12th along with several cultural performances. The next two days would continue this fun with mouth-watering foods, more cultural and fun-events.
