Extra security on Geldropseweg during Carnaval

0

There will be extra security on Geldropseweg during this year’s Carnaval parade.

In addition to the glass and cans ban that applies throughout Eindhoven, there will be an organised event location on Geldropseweg at the intersection of Stratumsedijk and Bilderdijklaan. “We are going to place fences here”, Dorus de Bruyn, owner of Dijk 9, announces. “We have arranged extra security.”

“Those security guards are in direct contact with the organisation that will keep an eye on everything, from afar. If it gets too crowded, the fences will close temporarily, so that it does not get too crowded on this narrow stretch of road”.

Last year things got out of hand. Drunken spectators wreaked havoc on seven cars. “It was just too busy here last year, and with too many people in one place, it simply becomes unsafe”, De Bruyn says. “We want to avoid that. Carnaval should be a celebration for everyone. It is a pity that security is needed, but safety comes first”.

Refused asylum, but not forgotten

0

Refugees who have been refused asylum and can not stay in the Netherlands – this is a group of people who are often invisible. The Vluchtelingen in de Knel (Refugees in Difficulty) Foundation organised a dinner especially for that group, and for the residents of Eindhoven. The aim was to get to know each other better.

And it worked. Besides the culinary specialities from all corners of the globe that were shared, there was also room for stories. Like that of Fredon, who tells about his trip to the Netherlands. About how he was packed with others, first in a car and later on a boat. That he thought he was dying when the dinghy in which he made the crossing from Turkey to Greece leaked but they were saved just in time by the police.

The stories are violent, but it is also a relief to be able to tell them. Fredon says: “You have a lot of problems in your heart. But if you tell them to others, you have then quietened them.’

Come hear the story of ‘Earthly Survival’

0

Want to hear an intriguing view of life? On Thursday, 7 February, The MU artspace in Eindhoven is screening a short film called ‘Donna Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival’.

This English, 82-minute long film will give the viewer a peek into this important, contemporary thinker’s train of thoughts. Professor Donna Haraway used to teach in the Departments of  History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies at the University of California in America.

In the ’80s, she became known for her work in the area of gender identity and technology. She broke away from the prevailing trends and opened the door to bold transfeminism. With her work, this influential scientist, feminist, and lover of science-fiction bridges the gap between science and fiction.

Filmmaker, Fabrizio Terranova, sought Haraway out at her home in California. He just about moved in with her for a few weeks. Terranova did this so he could produce a unique documentary about Haraway. The result is said to be a rare, candid, intellectual portrait of a woman many consider to be a highly original thinker.

This once-off screening will be held at the MU artspace at 40-06 Torenallee. Doors open at 19:30 and the film will start at 20:00. Tickets, which are available at Eventbrite, cost €7,50. Students only have to pay €5.

Animals no longer welcome at Tilburg fair

Animals can no longer be used for entertainment at the Tilburg fair. This was decided by the Tilburg city council on Monday evening. The Party for the Animals (PvdD) had submitted a motion with six other parties to ban animals from the fair. The warm summers in particular are increasingly causing heat stress, which is bad for animal welfare.

The ban on animals at the fair means an end to pony rides, a tradition many children in Tilburg grew up with. Muizenstad (The city of mice) is no longer allowed at the fair either. Muizenstad left the Tilburg fair in 2019 because of a video on YouTube. The video showed animal activists questioning the suitability of the environment for the mice during the extremely hot summer. As a result, the mice were no longer allowed at the fair.

A local party (LST) and a few other political parties  are against the ban on animals at the fair. According to LST, the ponies are well cared for at the fair and banning animals from the fair is “the height of folly”. Another party jokingly hoped that an fairground ride called ‘The caterpillar’ could remain.

Contract until 2024

VVD alderman Maarten van Asten does not agree with the motion, but is carrying it out because of the council majority. He does think that the municipality of Tilburg should adhere to the contracts that are still running with pony fair operators. These will run until 2024. He also notes that the operator who keeps ponies at the fair already left them at home during a number of warm summers.

Research into animal welfare

The city council will also investigate whether a ban on using animals for entertainment can be included in the events policy. The Party for the Animals would like to see that no animals are used at all during events in Tilburg.  However, they then would need to reconsider Sinterklaas’s horse and the sheep in the nativity scene. The city council does not want to go that far, but they will investigate whether a ban is possible in the long term.

Eindhoven residents can commemorate Holocaust victims

Eindhoven residents can make a temporary monument for Holocaust victims of the city from Monday 17 April. The memorial project ‘Names and Numbers’ will be kicked off at the CKE on that day.

A wooden board can be picked up at the CKE on which name plates can be made for one of the 362 victims of the Holocaust from the city. This way, the murdered fellow citizens are brought back home symbolicaly, which is the idea of the organisation.

On September 3, the name plates will be placed on a large map of Eindhoven. The map will be located on the Lodewijk Napoleonplein in the Vonderkwartier. Many Jews who were deported lived in this district during the war.

Other projects

The memorial project ‘Names and Numbers’ was conceived by artist Ida van der Lee from Amsterdam. Since 2012 onwards, they’ve annually laid out a map on the Kastanjeplein in East Amsterdam on which the name plates are placed of all Jewish victims of ’40-’45 from that neighbourhood. The Verhalis Foundation organizes these commemorations in Brabant, together with Erfgoed Brabant.

In 2024, the provincial commemoration will take place in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Then the nameplates from all Brabant cities will be placed together on a map of North Brabant.

Hanukkah celebration to take place at Stadhuisplein

0

Eindhoven’s Jewish community will host a small, scaled-back Hanukkah celebration at Stadhuisplein next week. This is in light of the current coronavirus regulations.

Hanukkah is a major celebration in the Jewish calendar. It lasts for eight days and nights, usually in November or December. This year, it will begin on 10 December and end on 18 December. Hanukkah commemorates the Maccabees’ (a group of rebel Jews) victory over the Syrian army. After a three-year war, the Maccabees reclaimed Jerusalem and their temple from the Syrians.

During the ceremony at Stadhuisplein, candles on the traditional seven-armed menorah will be lit. Rabbi Simcha Steinberg and Eindhoven’s mayor, John Jorritsma, will give speeches. In line with coronavirus regulations, there will be no live music or large crowds.

Eindhoven’s Jewish community is growing. This is partly due to the increasing numbers of Israeli expats who come to work in Eindhoven’s high tech industries. The community appointed its own rabbi in 2017.

New Mayor: ‘Son and Breugel suits us’

A fresh wind is blowing through Son en Breugel since new Mayor Suzanne Otters-Bruijnen took office. Soon she will move from Vught with her husband and four children  to settle in her new municipality.

Suzanne Otters-Bruijnen is the successor to Hans Gailard who was Mayor of Son en Breugel for the past twenty years. Both VVD politicians, but Otters-Bruijnen does have a different style. “My focus is also on women in top positions. I want to set an example for other women and girls, to show how they can develop. I am also focused on young people, just like the city council, I want to involve young people in decision making”. The latter will sometimes be quite a challenge, since there are not many young people to be seen out and about in Son en Breugel..

The new Mayor has an immaculate career in public administration behind her, apart from a faux pas: a tweet she posted about six years ago. When theme park De Efteling was discredited because of the alleged racist theme behind its attractions, Otters-Bruijnen tweeted a photo of her dessert: ‘white custard with negro kisses’.* It was intended to support the Efteling, but it was not to everyone’s liking. The tweet brought Otters-Bruijnen a lot of comments. Both negative and positive comments, by the way.

Brainport Region

Son en Breugel has both the green village character and the economic activity. A versatility that Otters is proud of. “This gives Son en Breugel something unique. I am from Waalre myself, also a municipality with an active club life and a clear link to the Brainport Region. The success of this region is the cooperation between the various municipalities. If we can be in touch with each other and together achieve the things we want to achieve with regards to the societal challenges, that is wonderful”.

* Before 2005, the offensive name ‘Negroes’ kisses’ was used for a certain type of  confectionary. Since 2005, they have been called ‘Chocolate kisses’, or simply ‘Kisses’. Explanation added by Greta for EN, with apologies.
