Mayor apologises for Carnaval outfit

0

The Mayor of Eindhoven, John Jorritsma, has apologised after the commotion caused by his Carnaval outfit.

The D66 and Denk political parties asked questions about the outfit. The Mayor posted a tweet during Carnaval. He can be seen on the photo with a sign reading, ‘BLOKKEER-FRIES’ (‘BLOCK FRISIAN’). The opposition parties called this ‘provocative and incomprehensible’, and demanded an apology from him. The term ‘blokkeer-Fries’ refers to the people who hindered the demonstration against Zwarte Piet (Black Peter) by obstructing the A7 highway.

So, Jorritsma has now said sorry and stresses that everything came about after an unfortunate coincidence. The outfit, he says, was part of a Carnaval campaign. It revolved around the dismissal of the well-known Frisian weatherman, Piet Paulusma, who celebrated Carnaval in Eindhoven. It was meant to show him support. Along with members of the Carnaval Association, also rigged out in Frisian gear, the parade was disturbed by ‘barriers’. They added the words, ‘Block Frisians – we do not accept SBS6 without Piet’. SBS6 is a Dutch commercial TV channel.

In addition, Jorritsma was invited to usher in Carnaval with former Carnaval ‘Princes’. The Mayor was then given a hat with Frisian decorations and a sash. He did not read the text at that moment, Jorritsma says. Jorritsma: “I understand, with hindsight, that the term ‘Block Frisians’, even if it is used for a fun Carnaval campaign, is publicly linked to, in particular, the demonstration against the Kick Out Zwarte Piet action group.”

“The (re)tweets of the Carnaval photo reinforced the idea that I agree with the views of the ‘Blocking’ Frisians from (the town of) Dokkum. I, myself, did not make the connection at that time. If I could turn back the clock, I would. I regret that people were offended by the Carnaval outfit.”

Sinterklaas parade

“As Mayor, I have always been committed to freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate. That was the reason why I, as agreed, allowed a Kick Out Zwarte Piet demonstration in November, in a visible place along the route, when Sinterklaas arrived,” Jorritsma says.

Eindhoven marathon: Kirwa, Assafe, Robi favourites

0

Kenyan Kirwa, Ethiopians Assefa and Robi are the favorites for winning this year’s Eindhoven Marathon.

The organization expects that at least one of the three participants will set a time of two hours, six minutes. Kirwa came second last year in Eindhoven, finishing in 2:06.13. Assefa and Robi also finished in times of just over two hours and six minutes.

“Since 2014, winners of the Eindhoven marathon managed to complete the course within an average time of 2.06:26. But only if all conditions like the weather, are excellent. However, their finishing times ensure Eindhoven’s marathon is among the ten fastest marathons in the world”, states director Marc Corstjens.

The marathon will take place next Sunday. Of course there are the professionals; but apart from them, over 23,000 amateur-runners will also participate.

Make sure you line the course and applaud them too!

Torchlight procession for tolerance

0

It is beginning to become a time-honoured tradition. Since 1992, thousands walk through the Eindhoven city centre carrying lit torches on Christmas Eve.  This Saturday evening drew thousands, a long procession of citizens who had joined to express their desire for peace and inclusion.

City poet Iris Penning read a poem and sang a song on the Wilhelminaplein stage before the procession  went under way.  Scouting group Johannes Vianney carried the Light of Peace, the flame they had brought from Vienna. Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem emphasised the idea behind the procession: an opportunity to devote thought to the importance of tolerance, acceptance and repect.

What prompted the initiative 30 years ago?

After all, the procession was initiated in 1992 after a spate of attacks on migrants by right-wing extremists in several places in Europe. In 1993, an attack on Turkish migrants in the German city of Solingen killed five girls and women.

Dijsselbloem also emphasised the importance of speaking out, of standing up against intolerance and making one’s voice heard. He mentioned the incident in Someren last month, where arsonists set fire to a planned refugee shelter for asylum seekers.

Graffiti to come to life at EMOVES

Eindhoven has been the urban culture hotspot of Europe for years. On 30 June and 1 July, thousands of international, national and local talents and professionals will again come to this city for EMOVES 2018.

Urban Culture Festival EMOVES is the annual Urban Culture Festival in Eindhoven. The best hip-hoppers, skateboarders, breakdancers, BMXers, free-runners, and graffiti artists will showcase their tricks during many competitions, performances, and workshops. These include the World Championships Breakdance for Duos, Step in the Arena graffiti festival, European Skateboard Battle, and much more.

The programmes at the  Ketelhuisplein on Strijp-S and in the Berenkuil are free-of-charge. At Ketelhuisplein there will be a busy programme with music, workshops, food truck area, performances, exhibitions, and BMX competitions. The largest graffiti festival in the Netherlands will take place at the Berenkuil Step in the Arena.

A ticket is needed for some of the events. With a ticket, you have unlimited access to all of EMOVES’ competitions and workshops. These include the World BBoy Classic in the  Klokgebouw Hall C, the European Bowl Battle in the Area51 Skatepark, and NEXTSTEP-XL, also in the Klokgebouw Hall C, to name but a few.

Hop the Block is an international freerun jam and competition that is hosted by Commit Freerun. During this 5th edition, you will find freerunners from all over Europe, from beginners to pros.

Visit emoves.nl for more information about the program and the international artists. Then there is Graffiti in Augmented Reality STRP. EMOVES will present the next level of street art in AR at Strijp-S. On Saturday, 30 June, the slow moving, fluid graffiti in 4D designed by AUJIK will have its world premiere in Eindhoven.

While walking on Strijp-S, you will experience 8 to 10 new works of AUJIK with a spectacular virtual layer on top of the physical environment through your smartphone. Graffiti in augmented reality (AR) can pop up anywhere and then disappear again. It gets really exciting when this graffiti is not a frozen image in AR, but comes to life.

What is typically Eindhoven?

The Philips Stadium, the Evoluon, the Lichtjesroute or the festivities? Eindhoven can’t be captured in just a few words or buildings. In the Parktheater yesterday, the question was: witte gij’t? (Did you know?)

This month, Eindhoven celebrates its centenary. Reason enough for a party and reflection. In recent years, the city has grown rapidly, with newcomers from all corners of the world. What is still the common denominator?

Typical Eindhoven

In the Parktheater, theatre producer Oscar de Boer is trying to answer this question. On three Sundays, he examines the past, present, and future of the city where he lives but didn’t grow up. He aims to collect information.

He’s doing so along with not only the theatre group, De Bende van Oz (Oz’s gang). The cultural organisation, Plaza040 and Stichting de Kleurrijke Stad (the Colourful City Foundation) are also involved. Oscar wants to use the collected information for a final theatre performance in December.

Yesterday, the past was central. Visitors could share their earliest memories of the city. As well as the nicest, most heartwarming features of ‘their’ Eindhoven. House band Bright Light performed too. They played songs by Armand, Lenny Kuhr and Gerard van Maasakkers.

Eindhoven’s history

Using various city maps, Huub Jacobs of the Eindhoven in Beeld Foundation discussed the city’s history. It started with the prehistoric remains of a settlement near the river Dommel. City rights were then acquired in 1232. That’s when the villages Gestel, Strijp and Woensel were incorporated. Did you know? That’s what formed Eindhoven’s star shape.

De Boer then talked to the members of two rival archers’ guilds. In earlier times, the archers defended the city against invaders. Nowadays, they practise crossbow shooting.

And they take part in the World War II Liberation Day parade. Did you know? Eindhoven is the only city in the Netherlands that celebrates its liberation.

Ageing guilds

In their yellow and red costumes, Gestel and Stratum’s Sint Joris guild representatives from Gestel talked about their struggle against an ageing membership. Not only are no young people joining.

There’s also little enthusiasm for the guild among 30 and 40-year-olds. But, there isn’t much room for newcomers, according to an audience member. For instance, women aren’t allowed to join these guilds.

In the final part of the afternoon, Johan Vlemmix took the floor. He’s lived in no less than 36 different places in Eindhoven. In the Kruidenbuurt neighbourhood of his youth, bicycles didn’t have to be locked.

Things have changed

And string hung from everywhere letter slot. Did you know? This was so friends and family could open the door without a key. Things have changed, agreed several people in the audience.

Still, not everything was better in the old days. In fact, Eindhoven should be more proud of its position as a knowledge centre, was the audience’s opinion. The inhabitants are friendly and sociable; the city is dynamic and open to change.

Comedian Matthias Tuns closed the afternoon with his first memory of the ‘city of lights’. He was fined for cycling across the market. Bystanders entered into a discussion on his behalf with the adamant enforcement officers.

The discussion degenerated into an argument, and a collection campaign followed. In record time, €85 was collected, almost double the fine. “Consider it a welcome gift,” Tuns was told.

Singing along at the top of your lungs at Levenslied Eindhoven

Not one, but two days of loud singing at ‘Levenslied’ (song of life) Eindhoven.

On the 26th and 27th of August, numerous artists will bring an ode to the sentimental song. National artists like Monique Smit and the Gebroeders Ko and regional and local artists like Ferry de Lits and Django Wagner will perform on the Stadhuisplein.

Just like previous times, an enormous crowd is expected. At that time the organisation had to close the gates because of the crowds. When the maximum number of visitors has been reached, the principle is one in, one out. Visitors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Admission is free again this year. Here you can find more info.

Night of the Night 2019 – City of Light in the dark

0

Various companies in Eindhoven, including Philips, and the High Tech Campus turned off their lights on Saturday. They did this as part of the 15th edition of Night of the night. It was to draw attention to global warming, energy-saving and light pollution. Night of the night is an initiative by nature and environmental federations.

In addition to Philips and the High Tech Campus, NXP, TMC, Shimano, Brunel and Signify also took part in the initiative. According to activists, the Netherlands is one of the most lit up countries. This results in large CO2 emissions. That is why the Eindhoven companies have united under #stapindegroenerichting (#astepinthegreendirection). And as evidence of their commitment to this cause, they joined the national Night of the Night campaign.

The organizers of Night of the night hope that individuals, companies and municipalities will switch to sustainable lighting and reduce light usage, especially if and when it is not needed.
