Concerti Fetti back in Eindhoven

Jan Smit, Django Wagner and Jan Biggel: these were some of the artists who performed on Wednesday evening in a full Indoor Sports Center during Concerti Fetti. The festival for people with disabilities is back in Eindhoven. A crowd of 4500 visitors sang and danced along.

The festive evening, organised by the Gehandicapten Concert Eindhoven foundation, has since become a household name in the city. The 20th edition was held in 2019, at the time still in the Beursgebouw.

“Visitors only need three notes and two words to sing along to the songs at the top of their lungs. They enjoy it as if their birthday and carnival fall on the same day,” explains Meranda de Laat of the organisation.

‘Nothing is more fun than this’

More than 100 volunteers contributed to the realisation of Concerti Fetti. “Seeing them smile: that’s what we do it for. It’s incredibly rewarding work.”

Conifer grower Henk receives prestigious prize

Henk van Kempen from Son en Breugel is a tree grower, in conifers to be precise. And not the well-known ones that are found in many gardens, but very special ones. Henk has even received a prestigious international award for it: the Justin C. Harper Award.

This is a prestigious prize for someone who contributes to the propagation and improvement, but also the discovery and cultivation of conifers. Henk is only the second Dutch person to receive this award from the American Conifer Society.”

“When people hear the word ‘conifer’, they immediately think of a big monster. However, there is much more. I mainly specialize in small dwarf forms and rarities.” Requests for Henk’s trees come from all over the world. “That’s why I’m constantly looking for new varieties.”

As an example, Henk shows the so-called Japanese parasol, which actually looks nothing like the ‘traditional’ conifer, which the layman recognizes as such. “It has thick, fleshy needles. There are more than a hundred different types of this tree alone. There are variegated forms, yellow forms, dwarf forms, extreme dwarf forms, etc..”

On expedition

Every two years Henk goes on an ‘expedition’ to the United States or Canada, where he looks for new types of conifers. And he can also be found regularly in various European countries, including Scandinavia, Germany and Austria. However, America is the Valhalla.”

“There are a lot of ‘seekers’ for conifers. Because in the wild you can also find new species and shapes. Just drive around and see if you see an abnormality somewhere in a very large tree. And if you then multiply it again, you can get out conifers like the ones you see here.”

Open

Henk’s nursery in Son en Breugel has approximately 23,000 different plants, of which approximately 4,000 are new every year. On Saturdays his business is open to private individuals and residents can also buy a conifer.

Taco’s, music and football with Latino’s

0

Coming Saturday the treats of Latin America are combined: Taco’s, music, dancing, ánd football.

Tortilleria & Art Mis Amores organized last Sunday a Mexican popular culture day with the screening of the match between Mexico and Germany, where they catered traditional Mexican food. Mexico won and at the end of the day, all nationalities were dancing to the sound of Cielito Lindo, a popular Mexican song.

Coming Saturday they would like to try this formula again, for the game Mexico vs South Korea,

because maybe this helps? Together with CLO, who organises the monthly Music with Latino’s, they invite all nationalities, especially their Korean friends, to come and watch, and to cheer together. After the match there will be music and dancing.

The event is from 16:00 to 23:00. Kitchen will open at 16:00 hrs and food will be served until it is available.

The world’s best solar car safely back in Eindhoven

0

Solar Team Eindhoven’s solar car arrived home, in Eindhoven, yesterday in one piece after a boat trip from Australia.

The team from the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) won the World Solar Challenge last year. This is a race in Australia for solar-powered cars. However, getting the car back to Eindhoven turned out to be quite a challenge.

The team had trouble finding a shipping company that was prepared to transport this piece of high-tech. During the race, Delft University of Technology’s car burst into flames. A spark has shut the car’s engine down.

Shippers not to keen to transport the car

The car’s battery is another sticky point, which was not mass-produced. The high safety requirements for carrying such a battery meant shippers were not eager to transport the vehicle.

The fact that the solar car named Stella Era would arrive in Eindhoven without damage was not a matter of course. In the run-up to the World Solar Challenge, the car’s solar panel was severely damaged during transport from the Netherlands to Australia. This damage put the team’s participation in the World Solar Challenge at risk.

“We are thrilled Stella Era is safe in the Netherlands again”, Katelijn van Kooten, the team’s Exterior Design Engineer, says. “Because of the bad luck with the transport on the way there, we were extra anxious”. The damage not only caused the team a lot of stress and extra work at the time. It was also a financial setback. Luckily the team was able to raise enough money through crowdfunding to replace the damaged panel.

The plan is that now that Stella Era is back in the Netherlands, the students will show off this winning car at all kinds of events. In this way, they hope to inspire people and the industry to switch to sustainable transport. When this will happen is unclear, taking the coronavirus measures into account.

Region represented at Graduation Show

0

There are more than 30 different nationalities among the 181 graduates at the Design Academy’s Graduation Show 2019. Among all these graduation projects is one that deals with the city of Eindhoven – Sense of Place, by Bloeme Groenewold.

Bloeme has divided Eindhoven up based on emotions. She asked 150 people from Eindhoven how they feel about certain places in the city. Stadhuisplein, for example, is a bit of a sad place. But at the same time, it gives a feeling of freedom. This is because of the skaters who skate there every day.

In Woensel, there is a feeling of belonging, thanks to the people from a wide range of cultures that live in the area. At the same time, those people sometimes miss the customs of their homeland. Each area in Eindhoven has its own feeling, and Bloeme has mapped this out using colourful objects.

Intense

During Dutch Design Week (DDW), the Design Academy’s Bachelors and Masters students present their graduation productions. This takes place during the Graduation Show. According to graduate, Anne Kamps, the students work towards this event throughout their studies.

“It is very intense,” she says. “You get up in the morning and certainly do not feel completely rested”. However, she enjoys it enormously. The visitors are involved and ask a lot of questions. They sometimes even have a viewpoint of her work she had not even thought of yet.

Six-winged chicken, rotating pig, and meatless milking goat

Anne’s graduation project is in response to news about a six-winged chicken. The fast-food chain, KFC, is said to have developed a six-winged chicken. This is so they can get more wings from fewer chickens.

Many readers believe the news; among them, Anne. She wonders what kind of fantasy creatures can be imagined and what kind of fabulous animals actually exist.

The result is a book with a rotating pig ‘of which you can cut slices off more easily’. The meatless milking goat has also been given a place in her work. “I do not have a very strong opinion about my subject at all. I eat meat myself. Not so often, but sometimes I do. It is more about making visitors think about the meat industry. As consumers, they have the power to make their own choices. Sometimes they do not realise that”.

Not only abstract ideas

Many of the projects exhibited at the Graduation Show are abstract. They zoom in on society and make visitors think about social themes. But self-proclaimed ‘very down-to-earth’ graduate Malou Kremers thinks differently.

She made a sleeper-chair. This is a sofa bed which can fold into a chair. In no time at all, you can have a bed or an armchair in your living room. Practical, with no deeper meaning – just a handy, stylish piece of furniture.

The graduates’ works all vary. However, according to Marc Ruis of the Design Academy, there is indeed a connection in the exhibited work. Students are increasingly concerned about the future.

Nature and the environment, for example, are recurring topics. One graduate made new products out of flower waste. Another used human stools as manure. All 181 graduation projects can be seen during DDW in the old Campina factory on Kanaaldijk-Zuid in Eindhoven.

TU/e and NXP join forces

Eindhoven University of Technology is going to collaborate with NXP. University and company want to develop a new, promising communication technology. To this end, the parties signed an agreement on Wednesday.

From NXP, specialists from the company will work together with scientists from the Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute. Both parties will make data, knowledge, students and employees available for the cooperation.

Together, the chipmaker and TU/e want to get a new “groundbreaking” technology off the ground, using frequencies above 300 gigahertz. Current technologies that try to make use of these high frequencies perform unevenly, TU/e says.

“TU/e is known for its pioneering work in the field of wireless communications, an area essential to the strategic sovereignty of both the Netherlands and Europe. NXP has been an important partner in this field for many years,” reveals CEO Robert-Jan Smits.

Track record

“Cooperation with leading universities is an integral part of NXP’s innovation strategy,” said Lars Reger, vice president of NXP.

“Eindhoven University of Technology’s proven track record in collaboration with industry gives us full confidence to expand our collaboration. This will lead to new innovations in communication technologies and advanced driver assistance systems, an area in which NXP is a world leader in semiconductors.”

Collaboration

This is the second time in a short time that TU/e has entered into a partnership with a major player in the Brainport region. Earlier it was announced that ASML is investing in the university, building a clean room there, among other things.

The skating rink is an important attraction in Nuenen during these winter months. The skating rink, which was built in the heart of the village, has been popular so far. An initiative of the volunteer organisation Dwèrs op het IJs.
