Traditional sporty start of New Year

0

In Eindhoven, one way to start the New Year is by participating in a sporty event: the traditional Genneper Parken Loop. No loop, but an annual running event. Eindhoven’s Genneper Parken Loop will take place on 6th of January 2019.

Participants can register for several distances: 2 (kids), 4, 8 or 14 kilometres. All proceeds of this traditional event will go to GP Bulls. This is Eindhoven’s wheelchair hockey club.

Blade-uitleen of Eindhoven Atletiek will also receive a donation. It loans prostheses, to ensure financial costs for disabled athletes remain low and affordable.

In addition to money raised through registration fees, there will also be a sports market. It will be located at HC Oranje-Rood. Start and finish of all runs are also located here.

As usual, the route will go past special locations and through parks. Previous years saw 1,500 participants. The annual sum raised is about €10.000. But of course, this time the aim is to raise even more money!

Join the fun?

This is a great way to kick-start 2019 and your sporty good intentions. So what about the costs? Registration fees start at €4,- for the 2 kilometres run (kids run). For all other distances, the registration fee is €10,-. This event is free for spectators.

Sunday 6th of January 2019 will be the 13th edition of the Genneper Parkenloop. The event starts at 10:00, with the Joop Veelenturf Run. This run is named after Joop Veelenturf who died in 2017. He was honorary chairman of Eindhoven’s hockey club and responsible for turning Dutch hockey into a professional sport.

Ranomi Kromowidjojo returns to the pool

Ranomi Kromowidjojo returns to swimming. The Olympic champion decided to put an end to her career in January of this year and now she will help young talented competitive swimmers with their future top sports career on behalf of the KNZB (Koninklijke Nederlandse Zwembond, the Royal Dutch Swimming Federation).

“I still regularly go to the pool. For swimming, but also because I enjoy talking to young athletes about their lives, their ambitions and the obstacles they face. During those informal conversations, I noticed that I can help them as an ‘experience expert’,”  Kromowidjojo says on the KNZB site. She swam her last competition at the Short Course World Cup in Abu Dhabi in December 2022, where she won six more medals, but will now help other swimmers. “Thanks to all the years of top sport, I know that you are capable of much more than you think, including by having the right thoughts. I am convinced that these experiences will also help me with my next challenge of inspiring others”.

Guiding talents

According to the KNZB, the advice that Kromowidjojo gives to the swimmers is so useful that a mentor role was in the offing. “Together we have come to the conclusion that it is a shame not to use Ranomi’s top sports lessons more broadly and more structurally”, Sjors Lommerts, top swimming manager at the KNZB, says.

“Ranomi will talk to athletes a few times a year at different training locations and also accompany  our talents to some international tournaments. For the time being, she focuses on coaching competitive swimmers, but I do not rule out that she will also be involved in the future and gets to work with talents from other sports branches of the KNZB”.

24-hour culture festival at Strijp-S

Dancing, shopping, skating, picnicking or playing games. It’s all possible this coming weekend during the second edition of De Nacht van Strijp-S. Entrepreneurs, institutions and catering establishments open their doors at Strijp-S all night long.

The Klokgebouw is the 24-hour heart of the event. Activities are held here all night long. There are DJs, a tattoo artist and a photo exhibition in the building.

Other organizations also participate in the event. Area51 is building a pop-up skate park on the Ketelhuisplein. Visitors can go to the porter’s lodge for a DJ workshop and Flowmies organizes a hoop workshop. There is also a Kubb tournament, where large wooden blocks are knocked over. Breakfast is organized the next morning for early or late risers. “There are more than 100 artists who offer an activity and 7 stages with music spread over Strijp-S,” says Pieter Lepelaars, communication De Nacht van Strijp-S.

Nightlife

“The Night of Strijp-S was organized for the first time last year to let you experience the vibrant nightlife of Strijp-S,” says Lepelaar. Several thousand visitors came to the event. This year the organization expects to attract more people.

Saturday, September 3 at 4 p.m. the party starts. “It is not entirely clear until what time the event will last. There are no guidelines for that. In any case, until Sunday 6:00 PM,” says Lepelaars.

Mobility scooter users dance performance

Dancing, but with a mobility scooter. It is a striking sight in the Heuvel shopping centre in Eindhoven. Here, mobility scooter users made patterns together with their cart. It is an initiative by designer Femke Hoppenbrouwer to eliminate the stigma attached to the mobility scooter.

“Many people still have a negative image of the mobility scooter,” Hoppenbrouwer explains. “People who may need it, but want to use the mobility scooter less and that is a shame because it is a means to more freedom.” With the initiative she wants to inspire people to start using a mobility scooter.

New legs

The designer noticed that there was an increase in the number of mobility scooters in her area. She started investigating and ended up with a group of mobility scooter drivers who meet up regularly. “What they told me was that it was actually their new legs. Then I thought: ‘Legs, that’s what you dance with. Why don’t we dance?’ And that’s actually how we started.”

Scootmobiel Dance Collective

“I liked that, because it was something new,” says Wim Zelders, the oldest dancer of the Scootmobiel Dance Collective. “People can simply see that much more is possible than just going to the store and back,” explains Marian de Beer, mobility scooter dancer. With the new initiative they also want to show that a mobility scooter is not just for old people, but for everyone who needs one.

Challenges

Femke did see some challenges with performing the dance. “Of course you are dealing with a completely different body. In addition, it takes up quite a lot of space, which can also make it wider.”

“We all have a great urge to continue with this,” says Hoppenbrouwer. After the premiere in the Heuvel shopping centre, the group not only wants to show people in the Netherlands what the possibilities of the mobility scooter are, “We hope to inspire the world.”

Eindhoven to celebrate women

0

Next Sunday, 8 March, is Internation Women’s Day (IWD). Activities and celebrations will be held on that weekend across the globe. Here, in Eindhoven, it will be so too.

Eindhoven celebrates IWD on Saturday, 7 March 2020 in the large foyer of the Parktheater. People can attend presentations and performances, network, and simply meet other women. All in a relaxed atmosphere.

This year’s IWD theme is ‘Each for Equal’. “An equal world is an enabled world,” states the IWD website. “Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender-equal world. Let’s all be #EachforEqual.”

Women of various nationalities will present their creative talents at Parktheatre on Saturday. Visitors can also take part in workshops. There will be a ‘meeting point’ where people can connect with women who have developed special projects in diverse fields.

The celebrations will run from 13:00 to 18:00 and will cost €3 to attend. The afternoon is organised by the C.L.O. foundation (Latin American Centre for Orientation). They have partnered with Women Inc and the Alle Vrouwen in Eindhoven (All women in Eindhoven) platform. It is also part of Eindhoven’s centenary celebration.

Christmas dinner for 200 lonely elderly people in Philips Stadium

0

A Christmas dinner for lonely elderly people will take place in Philips Stadium at the end of the year.

GGzE, the Eindhoven branch of the Dutch Association of Mental Health and Addiction Care, is organising a five course dinner for the guests. It will be the fifth edition of the event, and the second time it will be held in Philips Stadium.

GGzE is asking for donations to help make the event possible. They estimate that the dinner will cost €30. Thanks to the work of volunteers and several corporate sponsors, the organisers are able to keep the costs low.

Currently, around €1,500 has been raised, though the total costs are expected to reach €6,000.

In previous years, interest in the dinner far outnumbered the number of places available.

Singing along at the top of your lungs at Levenslied Eindhoven

Not one, but two days of loud singing at ‘Levenslied’ (song of life) Eindhoven.

On the 26th and 27th of August, numerous artists will bring an ode to the sentimental song. National artists like Monique Smit and the Gebroeders Ko and regional and local artists like Ferry de Lits and Django Wagner will perform on the Stadhuisplein.

Just like previous times, an enormous crowd is expected. At that time the organisation had to close the gates because of the crowds. When the maximum number of visitors has been reached, the principle is one in, one out. Visitors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Admission is free again this year. Here you can find more info.
