GLOW – “Green Light” art works and Precious Plastic

0

This year, the Precious Plastic project from Eindhoven is exhibiting an art work that brings to light the plastic problem faced by society. “Dear Plastic…” is part of the “Green Light” route, the social and environmental awareness art works exhibited on GLOW 2018.

This year GLOW divided the light art projects in four categories, Great Light, Art Light, New Light and Green Light.

With light artworks in the “Green Light” category, GLOW Eindhoven intends to offer a platform to create awareness for sustainability in an accessible way.

For those interested in social and environmental awareness there are four art works on the subject.

Social Awareness

“Chaotic Swing” at Station Square representing the chaos around us and the chaotic and unpredictable nature phenomena through the two garlands that influence each other resulting in an unpredictable movement.

“Safety First” located at Gagelstraat which brings the discussion about privacy and the technology that is available and the price society is willing to pay for safety

Environmental Awareness

“Night Light” art work exhibited at the Green Tower which proposes a discussion over light pollution in the man-built environment.

“Dear Plastic…” located at the Dommel location which exhibits frames full of plastic bottles floating on the Dommel.

Precious Plastic + Glow Eindhoven

Precious Plastic project is currently located at the garage of the VDMA building and works on bringing to light the low recycling rates of plastic waste and the consequences this have to society.

The project counts on dozens of volunteers working at the project head quarters in Eindhoven and around the world, gathering through the community created on the internet to share knowledge, techniques and new ideas to enhance plastic recycling everywhere.

This year Glow Eindhoven, Precious Plastic, Van Happen Containers, Jan Linders and Ergon cooperated to create “Dear Plastic.. ”.

In total there are 29003 bottles in the frames floating on the Dommel, 16470 1.5 liter bottles and 12533 0.33 bottles collected by Van Happen Containers and Jan Linders.

This amount of 1.5 liter bottles corresponds to the amount collected in one day from 59 supermarkets in the Netherlands.

On the other hand, the 0.33 bottles were collected from residual waste. Because the EU did not establish a deposit for small bottles, they go directly to the residual waste bins.

What will happen to the plastic in the Dommel?

Description of the materials used to make the "Dear Plastic..." exhibition

It was ensured that no pollution would result from this exhibition at the Dommel.

To make sure the bottles would not leave residues they were all emptied, sealed with their respective caps and they had their labels thoroughly removed.

All the plastic exhibited at GLOW 2018 will become a new work of art or object for GLOW 2019, giving back to the plastic a high aggregated value.

Nightclub PIXL snares world famous DJ Fedde Le Grand

Fedde Le Grand exchanges the large stage for a smaller-scale location. The world-famous DJ will perform at nightclub PIXL on Strijp-S on 16 May. “It’s great that he chose our club for an intimate club show”, co-founder, Pieter Lepelaars, says.

Le Grand, who is known for songs such as ‘Put Your Hands Up For Detroit’, can normally be found at major festivals such as Tomorrowland. Now the founders of the pop-up club, Tim van Mol and Lepelaars, have persuaded him to perform in Eindhoven through another DJ. And that is special. “He hasn’t played in a small club since his breakthrough, so we are very happy with that”, Lepelaars says cheerfully.

PIXL can accommodate ‘only’ 350 electronic music enthusiasts. There format: a DJ plays records in the middle of the room while the visitors are letting themselves go. And that is a resounding success. “I think all the events we had this year were sold out”, he proudly says.

Gap in the market

Lepelaars can think of a reason for the success. “There is a need for a place in Eindhoven where good electronic music is played. I think you can say that what we do is supported by the public and fills a kind of void”.

Although the club is doing well, the question remains how long PIXL will remain on Kastanjelaan. The nightclub is located in a demolished building. They can remain in place until 1 November. It will then be determined whether the contract can be extended again or whether they should move.

“We are looking for another place, but this is not concrete yet. We would like to return to a permanent place, where we can stay for ten years, for example”, Lepelaars says. The initiators’ preference is given to Eindhoven. In the meantime, PIXL continues to organise events.

Eindhoven and Geldrop-Mierlo honour volunteers

Eindhoven and Geldrop-Mierlo honored various volunteers on Wednesday for their efforts on Volunteer Day. Activities were organized and prizes awarded.

A volunteer party with a winter barbecue is planned Wednesday night

for organization Home-Start Humanitas Eindhoven. They provide support in the upbringing of children where the parents are unable to do so.

Volunteers talk to parents about practical problems, but mental and physical problems are also discussed. Alderman Samir Toub will express his thanks to the volunteers.

Geldrop-Mierlo

Stichting ‘t Saam and Vereniging Uno Animo received extra attention in Geldrop-Mierlo on Wednesday. According to the municipality, both organizations are doing a very good job. Alderman Peter Looijmans visited both to present them with a prize. The voluntary organizations are free to spend an amount of 1,000 euros.

For more than 30 years, people have come together at Stichting ‘t Saam to carry out their creative hobby. From ceramics to photography, the organization supports creative expressions in the villages. Sports association Uno-Animo ensures that everyone in Mierlo gets the chance to practice a sport that they like.

Nuenen seeks new Vincent van Gogh

0

Anyone who thinks of Nuenen thinks of Vincent van Gogh. The world-famous painter and former Nuenen resident put the village on the map. Not only with his art, but also through his turbulent life. More than a century after his untimely end, Nuenen is looking for the new Vincent among young inhabitants. Because of their drawing skills, that is.

Fifteen would-be Vincent van Goghs have been chosen for Van Gogh Village’s new talent programme. The youngsters, aged between 10 and 14, will receive master classes, drawing lessons and follow in the painter’s footsteps.

For example, like Vincent, they will draw the Van Gogh church using new techniques they have learned. “I do realise that Vincent also stood here painting a few years ago. And he probably thought the same as us: I’m going to try to draw this,” says Diede.

New Vincent

At the end of the nine-week run, there will be an exhibition. One of the youngsters will also be voted the new Vincent. Quite an honour, of course, but the main aim is for the participants to keep drawing. Because, according to the organisation, that is increasingly left out at that age.

“They are just moving on to secondary school. They get busy with girlfriends and homework. As a result, the creative side recedes a bit into the background,” explains supervisor Silvie van Kemenade.

The new Vincent van Gogh will be announced in December. “I am not going to whine about wanting to become the new Vincent, but it is a wish,” says one of the participants.

Geldrop quiz is still on

0

The fourth edition of the Geldrop Dorpsquiz (town’s quiz) will go ahead in November as planned.

That’s despite the new anti-corona measures. The games have been adjusted in such a way as to meet the Dutch Health Department’s rules. That’s what the organisers say on their website.

“We have several scenarios in mind that we can implement, depending on the rules.” This year there will be hardly any assignments given in advance. There’ll only be a registration assignment and a quiz evening.

Like every year, the organisers have given a taste of what’s to come. This year’s it’s, “In November 2008, Pastor Felie Spooren wrote the foreword in which book about the men in Dongen”. Registration open on Saturday, 27 June on the website

The town quiz will take place on Saturday, 21 November. Please note, it’s in Dutch.

Royal opening for renovated TU/e building Neuron

The Tu/E building, formerly known as the Laplace building, was completely stripped. On Tuesday afternoon, the building was reopened by Prince Constantijn with the new name Neuron. The university’s artificial intelligence institute (EAISI) is moving into the building.

In addition to the royal opening, a symposium was held on the themes of artificial intelligence and brain sciences. Earlier, a nine-metre-high artwork by Hella Jongerius was also unveiled in Neuron.

In the new buidling there are also many new meeting and study spaces for students. In total, there are 14 small lecture halls, 22 workspaces and 400 individual study places.

Before, the place that was named after the restaurant business of the same name that occupied it (La Place), the faculty of Industrial Design was housed in the building for a long time. In September 2021, it was announced that the building would undergo a major renovation. A year and a half later, the building was completely gutted inside and rebuilt. This is a little later than planned; the building was originally scheduled to be completed in September 2022.

Glow draws crowds on opening-night

0

Glow, Eindhoven’s annual light-event, drew crowds on its opening-night. This despite the bad weather.

Especially the light show in the Philips Stadium and the projection on the Light Tower attracted a large crowd. Many visitors had prepared for the bad weather. Many were using umbrellas or rain-ponchos.

GLOW will continue till next Saturday. Thirty-two light-installations are displayed along a route through Eindhoven’s city centre. The walk past all installations is about five kilometres long.

Various access roads to Eindhoven’s city centre are closed from six o’clock in the evening. Saturday evening, when Glow started, traffic regulators were kept busy steering the large crowd in the right direction despite heavy rain.

Taco’s, music and football with Latino’s

0

Coming Saturday the treats of Latin America are combined: Taco’s, music, dancing, ánd football.

Tortilleria & Art Mis Amores organized last Sunday a Mexican popular culture day with the screening of the match between Mexico and Germany, where they catered traditional Mexican food. Mexico won and at the end of the day, all nationalities were dancing to the sound of Cielito Lindo, a popular Mexican song.

Coming Saturday they would like to try this formula again, for the game Mexico vs South Korea,

because maybe this helps? Together with CLO, who organises the monthly Music with Latino’s, they invite all nationalities, especially their Korean friends, to come and watch, and to cheer together. After the match there will be music and dancing.

The event is from 16:00 to 23:00. Kitchen will open at 16:00 hrs and food will be served until it is available.

Venue: Hub, Vestdijk 25, Eindhoven

Due to poor organisation, no permit was applied for Highland Games

At the Highland Games in Geldrop, where a death occurred on 7 August due to a stray metal ball, too little attention was paid to the formal side of organising the event. Partly for this reason, no one applied for a permit. So concludes research agency COT, which investigated the circumstances of the incident.

According to the investigators, the Highland Games should have been classified as an event requiring an official permit. The fact that this did not happen is also due to the inadequate information on the municipal website. This leaves too much room for organisers to judge at their own discretion whether an event needs a permit or not, according to the researchers.

In addition, the report concludes, the organisers focused mainly on ‘practical matters’. This suggests that no one within the organisation was concerned with matters such as permit applications.

Municipality not to blame
Geldrop-Mierlo is not to blame, the investigators conclude. After all, the municipality was not the organiser of the event. Officials who knew about the event did not have a role in applying for permits.

With that, the responsibility around applying for permits lies entirely with the organisers. In the absence of a permit application, the municipality did not have the opportunity to perform a monitoring role. To actively monitor potential events that need to be controlled is not the responsibility of a municipality, the researchers believe.

Clarify
COT advises the Municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo to make it clearer when an event does or does not require a permit. In addition, the municipality should evaluate the permit process annually with event organisers.

A script should also be drawn up so that event initiators do not forget or skip any steps when applying for permits. The Municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo has announced that it will adopt the recommendations.
