Sombre Christmas even in churches

0

This Christmas Eve, St Joris church clergy will be having a ‘Church tour’.

They will be visiting six Eindhoven churches, travelling part of with a nativity scene. There are usually eight Christmas services in Eindhoven South.

The COVID rules, however, mean these have been cancelled this year. That means thousands of people won’t be able to attend Christmas mass. So, this church tour an alternative.

Six stops

The churches on the route are Catharina, Martinus (in Tongelre), and Pius X Church(in Stratum). The route continues past the Gestelse Lambertus, and Trudo Church (in Strijp). It ends at St Joris Church.

The Christmas gospel will be read at each church. A Christmas message and some prayers will also be shared. St Joris says there’s a kind of beauty in this year’s austere Christmas celebrations.

“In this corona time, all the Christmas festivities are more sombre. They’re, therefore, slightly more aligned to the humble birth of Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem. There were few visitors then.”

Only three visitors

“There were only three wise men from the East. So, they were adhering strictly to Rutte’s rules. Less glitter and glamour this year, but perhaps more the true Christmas spirit than ever”, says a church spokesperson.

There was an Easter Church tour during the first lockdown too. According to the St Joris Church’s spokesperson, there was a lot of interest then. They hope this will also be the case now.

The eight Christmas Day services will continue. As will the seven on Boxing Day. Only 30 worshippers are allowed at each service.

Mental health care forum with GGZ Eindhoven

GGZe, mental health care authority, is curious to find out the international point of view. On 1 October (2018), there will be an evening of discussing, listening and giving feedback on how mental health care is arranged and perceived in the Netherlands.

GGZe mental healthcare professionals like to meet the wider international public in this region to better understand what needs to be done to have their services better meet the internationals’ expectations.

The format of this meeting will allow a lot of time for you to give your input and share experiences or ideas of yourself. The professionals will mostly be listening and asking further questions.

Feel free to forward this link to others who could be interested.
The event is free of charge, but registration is required: send a mail to i.martens@sge.nl.

The initiative for this forum was taken by SGE International and Healthcare for Internationals (H4i). They work together with other healthcare providers to exchange knowledge and experiences, with the common goal to make Dutch healthcare better meet the needs of internationals.  Prior to this forum, their International Panel met with professionals of mental health care provider GGZ Eindhoven to learn about each other.

New Mayor: ‘Son and Breugel suits us’

A fresh wind is blowing through Son en Breugel since new Mayor Suzanne Otters-Bruijnen took office. Soon she will move from Vught with her husband and four children  to settle in her new municipality.

Suzanne Otters-Bruijnen is the successor to Hans Gailard who was Mayor of Son en Breugel for the past twenty years. Both VVD politicians, but Otters-Bruijnen does have a different style. “My focus is also on women in top positions. I want to set an example for other women and girls, to show how they can develop. I am also focused on young people, just like the city council, I want to involve young people in decision making”. The latter will sometimes be quite a challenge, since there are not many young people to be seen out and about in Son en Breugel..

The new Mayor has an immaculate career in public administration behind her, apart from a faux pas: a tweet she posted about six years ago. When theme park De Efteling was discredited because of the alleged racist theme behind its attractions, Otters-Bruijnen tweeted a photo of her dessert: ‘white custard with negro kisses’.* It was intended to support the Efteling, but it was not to everyone’s liking. The tweet brought Otters-Bruijnen a lot of comments. Both negative and positive comments, by the way.

Brainport Region

Son en Breugel has both the green village character and the economic activity. A versatility that Otters is proud of. “This gives Son en Breugel something unique. I am from Waalre myself, also a municipality with an active club life and a clear link to the Brainport Region. The success of this region is the cooperation between the various municipalities. If we can be in touch with each other and together achieve the things we want to achieve with regards to the societal challenges, that is wonderful”.

* Before 2005, the offensive name ‘Negroes’ kisses’ was used for a certain type of  confectionary. Since 2005, they have been called ‘Chocolate kisses’, or simply ‘Kisses’. Explanation added by Greta for EN, with apologies.

Lights go out in Eindhoven and Geldrop for ‘Nacht van de Nacht’

0

In Eindhoven and Geldrop, the lights will go out in public places on Saturday evening to draw attention to waste of energy.

The ‘Nacht van de Nacht‘ campaign by nature and environmental organizations is supported in many places in the country. In Eindhoven, the LED screens on the Markt will be turned off, just like the lights on ten approach roads, at the VVV Brandstore and on the mast at bus station Neckerspoel. The Lichtnaald on the Beukenlaan also remains dark, as well as the illumination of the Catharinakerk.

Geldrop-Mierlo also participates. The church in Geldrop and the mill in Mierlo will not be illuminated on Saturday night.

According to the municipality of Eindhoven, the city is already consciously dealing with light. For example, lighting is dimmed at night to save energy. Companies can take part in the campaign and sign up via the website www.nachtvandenacht.nl.

Elluf Elluf party takes a bigger approach

This year, Eindhoven’s start of the carnival season, Elluf Elluf, is taking a bigger approach. The party is also moving, from the Stratumseind to the Markt in the city center.

At café M, the party kicks off at 11 past three in the afternoon and lasts until 11 past 11 in the evening. Then, the carnival motto for 2024 will also be announced.

Floating

“Elluf Elluf has always been a floating event. It has never been very big in Eindhoven and we want to change that,” explains Davy Versfeld of the organisation. “We want to make it bigger. We have the ambition to make Elluf Elluf grow”.

What exactly the party will look like is not yet clear. The organisation also has a plan to better connect Elluf Elluf with the light festival Glow, also scheduled for early November.

Note from the editor: traditionally the carnival season starts on November 11, so 11/11. Eleven was considered the madman’s number, and carnival encourages things being turned upside down. The carnival period ends with a festival in the days before Lent, a Roman Catholic period of six weeks of fasting, ending at Easter.

Taco’s, music and football with Latino’s

0

Coming Saturday the treats of Latin America are combined: Taco’s, music, dancing, ánd football.

Tortilleria & Art Mis Amores organized last Sunday a Mexican popular culture day with the screening of the match between Mexico and Germany, where they catered traditional Mexican food. Mexico won and at the end of the day, all nationalities were dancing to the sound of Cielito Lindo, a popular Mexican song.

Coming Saturday they would like to try this formula again, for the game Mexico vs South Korea,

because maybe this helps? Together with CLO, who organises the monthly Music with Latino’s, they invite all nationalities, especially their Korean friends, to come and watch, and to cheer together. After the match there will be music and dancing.

The event is from 16:00 to 23:00. Kitchen will open at 16:00 hrs and food will be served until it is available.

Venue: Hub, Vestdijk 25, Eindhoven

Festival plus a ‘new course’ to mark Muziekgebouw’s 30th

In September, it will be the thirtieth anniversary of the Muziekgebouw. In honor of the jubilee, the theater is organizing a festival while also embarking on a ‘new course’

With this new course, the theater wants to reach a wider audience. A right step in the direction to solve its budget constraints.

“We have embarked on a new path with the development plan,” says director Edo Righini. “To achieve this, we are broadening the programming and involving different target groups in the development of new programs and initiatives. In this way we want to reach a larger and also broader part of society.”

Balance

“At the same time, our focus is on creating a Muziekgebouw where cultural content and cultural entrepreneurship are in balance,” Reghini continues. “The first results of this new strategy give us confidence that we are well on the way.”

Kick off

The anniversary season will kick off on September 10. The Philharmonie Zuidnederland will present a broad musical program with various special guests, the Muziekgebouw said. In addition, as part of the thirtieth anniversary, various celebrities will visit the concert hall during the year.

The legendary soul bands ‘The Temptations’ and ‘The Four Tops’ will be performing at the end of October. A surprise program by Hungarian pianist András Schiff is planned in February.

Sunday Funday

The Sunday Funday festival is being kicked off a day after the 30th anniversary. The Muziekgebouw plans to give lesser-known artists a stage with this recurring event. Less well-known performances have been less well-visited since corona, Muziekgebouw director Edo Righini previously told Studio040 . Sunday Funday must put an end to that.
