Brabant Day called off again

This year’s edition of Brabant Day is cancelled. Whilst the Dutch government plan to relax the current coronavirus measures further in May, the event’s organisers say there is too much uncertainty around this. Last year’s edition of Brabant Day, which fell during the first wave of the coronavirus, was also cancelled.

Brabant Day is an annual parade celebrating the history and culture of Brabant, held in Heeze.

‘With pain in our hearts, we must cancel the 63rd edition of Brabant Day,’ the organisers write. The decision was reached after much deliberation with local councillors and volunteers.

More events and social activities are expected to be possible by the end of August, but uncertainties remain. Many weeks of preparation go into the parade. For example, mechanics begin building the special parade wagons in June. Whether the building process can be done in a safe, corona-proof way remains under discussion.

Festive entertainment at your door

0

The Eindhoven Arts Centre (CKE) and the Parktheater have joined hands with neighbourhood organisations.

Together, they’re bringing art and culture right to the doorstep of residents in various parts of the city. There will be parades with live music and theatre and dance performances. These will be travelling through the streets of Eindhoven from today onwards.

Every evening, under the name Warme Winter Stoet (Warm Winter Parade), a different neighbourhood will be surprised by these performances. The will continue until right before Christmas. The last one will be on Wednesday, 23 December.

Supporting local organisations

The idea was born from all the upcoming public holidays. Because of the anti-corona measures, gatherings with loved ones are out of the question. The CKE and Parktheater,  therefore, decided to support the various neighbourhood organisations.

“This year’s holidays are going to be weird. So, there are no big family Christmas gatherings. No o dancing in the new year. No friendly neighbourhood activities. That’s why we want to bring a little warmth and light to the neighbourhoods in a different way,” Wikke Peters and Marjon Reus, of CKE and Parktheater, say.

“In the dark days before Christmas, we’ve organised all kinds of great activities. These are on the initiative of the neighbourhood organisations. All, of course, corona-proof.”

Dual purpose

“These activities have a dual purpose. Not only are we bringing warmth to people’s doorsteps. We’re also allowing dozens of artists to make a meaningful contribution to the city at a time when the culture sector is struggling,” Peters and Reus conclude.

These activities are made financially possible by Woonbedrijf.

Friemel en Frutsel Dagen: ‘It was nagging for volunteers’

0

We have again the ‘Friemel en Frutsel Dagen’ (arts and crafts days) in Mierlo, but they were close to cancelling the event due to a lack of volunteers.

All children in groups 1 to 8 are melting beads passionately, are making Halloween window pendants and tea light holders and can have their faces painted. In addition to the crafts, they also can enjoy sausage sandwiches, drinks and biscuit decorating.

What could be better than having a good time with your friends while doing some crafting?
Joke Doensen, Board member.

“The Friemel en Frutsel Dagen are organised to give children who are not going on holiday, a nice time in the autumn”, Board member Joke Doensen tells us. “In the autumn holidays there is often bad weather, so having a good and active time with your friends is a wonderful alternative.” Doensen has been working for 45 years (from day one) at the Friemel en Frutsel Dagen and Honorary Member at the Jeugd Vakantie Werk Mierlo (Youth Holiday Activities Mierlo), the organiser of the craft days.

I do think it’s important that this continues. I used to participate as a small child. Now I’m here as a volunteer“.
Kim van Stekelenborg, volunteer for 6 years.

Volunteer deficit

For a while, however, it was uncertain whether there were enough volunteers to keep the days on track. “This year it was very difficult for us to find adult volunteers. Children of 12, 13 years old like to help, but we would also like to have an adult at the tables to guide them all in the right direction”, Doensen tells us. “It was a lot of nagging to persuade people to come and help us”. “I think it’s hard for many people to combine. Especially if you work full-time”, Kim van Stekelenborg adds. She has been a volunteer at the craft days for 6 years. “But I do think it’s important that this continues to exist. I used to participate as a small child. Now I’m here as a volunteer with a daughter who does some tinkering here. She will also help next year, then she is old enough”. In this way, it contributes to the volunteer deficit.

DAF Museum to open in July

0

The DAF Museum will reopen on 1 July, the institution announced.

It reopened in November 2019. The museum, however, closed in mid-March again and remained so more than three months.

In April, the museum announced they’d use the closure to complete certain work. That work included lighting in the museum’s new wing. The museum also said the corona crisis wouldn’t cause financial problems for them.

Opening a month later

The museum states they’re not taking safety for granted with the opening. Museums were actually allowed to open on 1 June. But the DAF Museum deliberately chose not to open until a month later.

The museum used that time to corona-proof everything. They’ve set up a one-way route, and there’s enough space for visitors to keep the required 1,5m distance. Visitors can reserve tickets via the museum website from 24 June.

Tickets cost between €5 and €10 with free admittance for children under the age of five.

Volunteers look forward to return of Brabantsedag: ‘Goosebumps moment’

Finally back, that is the prevailing feeling among the organisers of the Brabantsedag. The annual wagon parade in Heeze returns to the streets of the village after a two-year corona break. Volunteers can’t wait. “It’s already starting to itch”.

Harald van Schie, organising member of the Brabantsedag, can’t believe his luck. Just like any other enthusiast, he says. “Heeze is a very close community, at least 20 per cent are really active members of the parade. It’s all about the Brabantsedag all year round. And so finally again without corona troubles. After 62 years of continuously staging the parade, it feels super weird that it hasn’t happened in two years. But that makes it extra nice that it can happen again. A real goosebump moment, it is already starting to itch”.

Enthusiasm

Many members of the organisation stopped. Still, not continuing the parade was not an option, Van Schrie tells. “The bond with the event is so important for Heeze. The flags and posters are already hanging out. The village forms a unity”.

The organisation sees hospitality as an important spearhead for the coming edition. “It often takes place on one of the hottest days of the month. We are therefore planning to set up a covered grandstand for the public”.

Brabantsedag

The Brabantsedag is a float parade that takes place annually on the last Sunday in August. Sixteen float groups choose their own theme from an overarching one, on which they design and build their own float. The themes always have a connection with the history of Brabant.

The spectacle attracts between 30,000 and 40,000 visitors each year. Quite a number, considering that Heeze has a population of just under 10,000.

With Verve

This year’s theme – ‘Met (with) Verve‘ – had already been decided on in 2020. The edition of that year, which was eventually cancelled, had the same theme. Van Schrie: “Painters from Brabant are central. It is up to each building group to design a kind of ‘two-layer translation’ of a painting they have chosen”.

~Ed. – With the word ‘verve‘ there is a word play on ‘verf‘ (paint).
