You may have to pay more for beer at Carnaval

0

Are you going to a pub in the five days during Carnaval? Then make sure to take enough money. This year in many places in Eindhoven you will pay no less than €3 for a beer.

Within the hospitality industry, the ‘magic boundary’ for a beer is €3. The fact that several pubs and other food and drink establishments have now reached that limit has caused a wide range of reactions. “If my beer supplier raises his prices, I have no choice but to raise my own beer price as well”, Arjan Bouter, organiser of the Bavaria Bier Hal on Stadhuisplein, says.

In addition to the increased beer price from the supplier, €3 is a fair price for more reasons, according to Bouter: “Entrance is free, there is a DJ, and the toilet has to be paid for. And then it all has to look a bit nice. So it is logical that a fair price is asked for the beer, among other things”.

Not all will charge more

Cafe Altstadt on Stratumseind uses the beer price that they usually also use. This increased to €2.70 in January. “We have been waiting a very long time to raise our prices, but at a certain point we could not do otherwise”, Daphyd Sens, manager of Altstadt, says. “Three euros is too much money for me. I would only ask that if there was really no other way”. According to Sens, the average national price for beer is also around €2.70.

The question now is whether visitors are willing to pay €3. According to Bouter, the general ban on glass and cans during Carnival does not help either. “Beer from a plastic cup looks significantly less chic than it does in a glass”. Still, both business owners are not worried. “People will buy beer anyway, whether it costs a lot or a little”, Bouter says.

NT2 in One Day in the theatre

This training day with musical support in Parktheater is especially for internationals who will take the Staatsexamen Nederlandse taal B1 in 2024. It is for people who have already passed the A2 level and now want to make the jump to B1 in one day.

To acquire citizenship in the Netherlands, the Dutch language requirement has gone from the beginner level A2 to the intermediate level B1 since January 2022. 2023 was still a transitional year for some nationalities, but as of 2024 the B1 level applies to all nationalities.

Tips and tricks

To help more internationals, Dutch teacher Yvonne van Deursen-Bakx is going to give ‘international nerds’ B1 exam training in one day. NT2 in one day’ on March 2 at the Parktheater. Van Deursen will practice all four skills that are tested in the exam: reading, listening, writing and speaking. Only internationals with the A2 level are allowed to participate.”The entire day will be in Dutch. We will do different forms of work. I give the participants practical tips and tricks and show them which mistakes are often made,” says the language teacher.

During the training day the participants get a lot of information to process. Dj Robin makes sure they get enough exercise to pump oxygen into the brain at intervals for an optimal learning process. Brain-friendly learning, Van Deursen calls it. “With jumping to music, for example, you can ensure an optimal learning effect. I’ve been doing that with my online courses for some time.”

What many internationals don’t know is that the certificate remains valid for life. “So you don’t have to wait until you have been in the Netherlands for five years to take these exams and get this official certificate,” says Van Deursen-Bakx.

The location for the training day is not coincidentally the Parktheater in Eindhoven, says Van Deursen: “The theater would like to attract more internationals; connect more with the many internationals in Eindhoven.”

Wednesday costume a hit in party shop ‘t Snabbeltje

26 more nights of sleep and then it’s time: carnival! Eliëtte de Haas of party shop ‘t Snabbeltje in Eindhoven has already bought a huge amount of costumes. The carnival jitters can already be felt among the customers: ”When they hear the carnival music in the store, people immediately get into the mood.”

According to Eliette, one type of costume is impossible to get hold of. The dresses from the Netflix series Wednesday are flying over the counter like hot cakes. It has been a huge success, especially with children. Fortunately, we managed just in time to order the suits from the suppliers.” In addition, the tracksuits are again very popular among adults this year.

From Pikachu to carnival jacket

In addition to the popular costumes, there is of course plenty of choice for other outfits. For example, a customer in the store tells us that she makes her own clothes for carnival. ”I still walk through the shops to get inspiration from costumes.” There are also children in the store. The young girl already knows exactly what she will be: ”Pikachu!”.

If you don’t need eye-catching costumes, you can always go for the carnival jackets. Eliette also has them in all colors of the rainbow. This year we have a new collection with a jungle theme or even with Greek Gods on it. Of course you can always opt for the standard black carnival jacket that you can decorate with emblems.”

On February 19, the carnival party starts in Brabant.

Dancing with a beam of light as your dance partner in The Ballroom

Dancing on the dance floor. This is possible during GLOW on the TU campus. Team Ignite of the TU/Eindhoven created the art project “The Ballroom”. A light installation that follows you around and allows you to dance.

TEAM IGNITE, Tim de Jong and Philip Ross, are looking for the sense of connection between the visitors of GLOW to rekindle that social cohesion of dancing together with their light artwork.

How does that work exactly?
The visitors are detected anonymously by means of infrared imaging. This way, the beam of light chooses its partner at random while the music of the student orchestra Quadrivium is playing. All this happens in real time, without any delay. The art installation can be seen until Saturday during GLOW, at the Metaforum on the TU campus.

Halloween and horror in the Distelstraat

0

Little witches, monsters on stilts and plenty of candy. These are the ingredients for the spooky Halloween night in Eindhoven’s Distelstraat this weekend. Hundreds of dressed-up children came from all over the Kruidenbuurt neighbourhood to have a look.

The party is popular. You can tell by the many visitors who stopped by this year. Big clown heads, witch circles and cobwebs lit up the street and houses.

Terrifying

Screams and howls ring out from the speakers of houses where sweets lie on the tables and dressed-up residents sit waiting for the children. Together, it creates a spooky atmosphere that is still just a little too scary for some young children.

Local residents keep a watchful eye and make sure the tour is fun for everyone. Children fill their bags and buckets with sweets or they run through the haunted house for the fourth time.

Socialising

The residents have spent weeks dreaming up and creating outfits and decorations. They especially enjoy being together. “We have just moved here, and get in touch with the neighbourhood easily through parties like this,” explains resident Kim Obbens. The organisation plans to involve more streets in the neighbourhood event in the coming years.

Eindhoven breakdance group win world title in Japan

The breakdance group The Ruggeds set a good example to Louis van Gaal’s football team last weekend. At the World Championships Breaking in Japan, the Eindhoven dance crew won all prizes.

In Okinawa, the Eindhoven breakdancers competed against teams from all over the world during the 25th edition of ‘Battle Of The Year’. The dance crews competed for the titles ‘best showcase’ and winner of the battles. Both prizes were won by The Ruggeds from Eindhoven.

Justin Bieber

It is not the first time that The Ruggeds were successful. For example, the crew danced in a video clip by Justin Bieber, they were in the final of NBC’s World of Dance and they will be in Dutch theatres until the end of this year with their performance Decypher.

Night of the Night 2019 – City of Light in the dark

0

Various companies in Eindhoven, including Philips, and the High Tech Campus turned off their lights on Saturday. They did this as part of the 15th edition of Night of the night. It was to draw attention to global warming, energy-saving and light pollution. Night of the night is an initiative by nature and environmental federations.

In addition to Philips and the High Tech Campus, NXP, TMC, Shimano, Brunel and Signify also took part in the initiative. According to activists, the Netherlands is one of the most lit up countries. This results in large CO2 emissions. That is why the Eindhoven companies have united under #stapindegroenerichting (#astepinthegreendirection). And as evidence of their commitment to this cause, they joined the national Night of the Night campaign.

The organizers of Night of the night hope that individuals, companies and municipalities will switch to sustainable lighting and reduce light usage, especially if and when it is not needed.

Musicians out on the street

0

These are hard times for musicians too. So, the street concert the Muziekgebouw held on Monday on Van Meursstraat was a morale booster.

Out-of-the blue, a blue caravan pulled up and musicians spilt out. And, all of a sudden, a small audience was enjoying an almost private concert on Van Meursstraat. The (almost) secret performance was whispered to only the street’s residents. For a handful of passers-by, it was a complete surprise – these Eindhoven musicians on the sidewalk. And that made it even more fun.

The street concert was the Muziekgebouw and the Maandag van Van Meurs Organisation’s (Van Meurs’ Monday) idea. This is a weekly musical event that’s a tribute to the Eindhoven musician, Ad van Meurs, who died in 2017. Its goal – to be heard.

Great idea

“Just, to bring music to the people again. And I think that’s a fantastic idea”, says musician and Dutch cult hero, Björn van der Doelen. He also performed on Monday. Just like his fellow musicians, Van der Doelen’s going through a quiet time because all performances have been cancelled. It, has, however, not affected him much.

“I like that I have free time every weekend and can spend a lot of time with my girlfriend and kids. And, financially, I can manage, because I have my football pension”. Van der Doelen used to be a professional footballer.

Cellist Mirthe de Jong doesn’t have a football pension. She admits that in the first weeks she couldn’t perform, she didn’t know what to do with herself. Not being allowed or able to do anything was very hard for her. Financially it’s hard too. “I’m a student, so don’t get a government payout. How I’m going to get through the summer is still worrisome, yes,” she says.

‘Not all bad’

The corona crisis means financial misery for musicians. This is confirmed by guitarist Jeroen Kant, who was also part of the street concert. “Luckily I can give internet guitar lessons”, he says. The lack of performances isn’t all bad. He has a boat that needs a lot of work, and it offers “room for reflection”.

Ankie Keultjes, the late Ad van Meurs’ partner, does the Maandag van Van Meurs’ programming. Her work’s also come to a complete standstill. “These Mondays are fantastic evenings with singer-songwriters and great audiences.”

“My work’s ground to a near halt. All I can do now is look toward the latter part of the year. The programming was already done, and we had a lot of acts from America. So now I have to get to work on putting together an alternative programme. With musicians from the Netherlands and Belgium, who can still travel”.

Regardless of how much the random audience in Van Meursstraat appreciated it, another street concert’s by no means guaranteed. The organisers are, for their part, remaining mum. They also want to prevent attracting too many people to such an event.

Eindhoven Maker Faire draws crowds

0

The annual “Maker Faire” at Eindhoven’s Klokgebouw drew a large number of visitors, as usual. This weekend, the art of creating items took center stage.

It was the fifth time this fair was held and second time it took place in the Klokgebouw and at the Ketelhuisplein. Visitors were able to watch talking and moving robots, witness demonstrations of 3D-printing and watch self-driving cars.

Creative

Visitors were not just passive observers. They were offered opportunities to show how creative they were.

Children and adults could demonstrate their technical skills and let their creativity run riot. They could take part in designing and building items themselves. A variety of materials were available. Visitors were even able to show off programming skills, or demonstrate their ability to create mini robots.

The event was held at the Klokgebouw for the second time. The reason for a move to the Klokgebouw and Ketelhuisplein is the ever increasing number of visitors.

The VDMA building simply is no longer large enough to cope with the crowds this event now draws. Last year, it attracted 10,000 visitors. According to Eindhovens Dagblad, this year the annual event attracted 15,000 enthusiasts.
