Veldhoven mayor opens education event by Eindhoven News and Microlab

Registration for secondary school admissions starts this week, and the education event by Eindhoven News and Microlab on Thursday helped many families decide. The event focussed on bilingual curriculum and whether it suits international children.

International parents whose children grow up in the Netherlands are often at crossroads about the education path of their children. Should the children be global and attend an international school or follow a bilingual curriculum or switch to a Dutch way of education? The choice of internationalised bilingual education is a recent addition and hence adds to the parents’ challenge of making the best choice for their children.

Mayor of Veldhoven

Mayor of Veldhoven Marcel Delhez opened the event. In his speech, he stressed the importance of internationalisation as well as learning the Dutch language. Standing there as a Brainport representative, he said he believes in the importance of Brainport for all. The audience expressed their enthusiasm that the mayor found the time to attend the event to make internationals feel included.

The event started with a presentation on the secondary education system in the Netherlands from Natascha Zijderveld- de Vries of Istart international school. The next segment of the event was the presentations from three secondary schools with specialised bilingual curricula. A big thank you to the participating schools, Heerbeeck college (Best), Stedelijk college (Eindhoven) and Sondervick college (Veldhoven). Thanks to the SKPO group of schools and the SALTO group of schools for actively encouraging the participation of parents.

Robert van der Vorst of Heerbeeck college, Terrance de Vries of Stedelijk college and Patricia van Berkel of Sondervick college presented the highlights of the bilingual curriculum in their respective schools. However, Patricia van Berkel also outlined features of the international stream starting this fall. Beena Arunraj, the director of Eindhoven News, moderated the panel discussion that followed. The questions to the panellists Robert van der Vorst, Patricia van Berkel and Terrance de Vries shone light on the various aspects of the secondary education system. Please watch our features column for more detailed informative articles on this topic. Many questions were put forth by the internationals to the panellists and other education sector leaders who attended the event.

Surreal cycling

0

Imagine pedalling on a bike in a sports centre, while finding yourself in a futuristic world or the Austrian mountains. You can, at Cycledome, a new attraction in Strijp-S.

A huge screen is located in residential block 59 on the former Philips premises. Cycledome is part of a new innovative gym in that block. Anything can be played on the screen, such as a special mountain ride or a surrealistic world. The idea behind it is that indoor cycling should be a lot of fun. A new dimension is added to the sport.

In addition to the large screen and the futuristic look, the bikes also light up. The colour says something about how hard you need to pedal. White, for example, is very light, while red requires a lot of pedalling.

According to the owner, a bicycle attraction like Cycledome is the first in the Benelux region.

First million euros in donations for Philharmonie Zuidnederland

The Philharmonie Zuidnederland Symphony Orchestra has collected its first million euros in donations through its own fund. A large part of the amount came from a single donor from Noord Brabant.

The large total amount came about through several donations from him in the past four years, together with his legacy after his death.

In recent years, many visitors have come forward with the intention of donating to the orchestra, says relationship manager Maud Douwes. “It also happens that people leave a sum of money in their estate. The amounts vary, but every gift is of great value to us”, she says.

So too now, Douwes says. “He was looking for several music and cultural causes to include in his legacy, so we also received a sum. He was already a major donor and was also regularly invited by us”, Douwes says.

For future generations
Director Stefan Rosu is delighted with the donations and legacies. “Because we can preserve the classical and symphonic tradition in the south of the Netherlands and continue it for future generations”.

Rosu sees art and culture as the ‘foundation of a healthy society’. “We fulfil a major role in this. The resources that come into the fund help to strengthen the quality of the orchestra’s activities”.

The Philharmonie Zuid Nederland Fonds (fund)
The Philharmonie Zuidnederland makes classical music in the southern Netherlands and seeks to connect with all inhabitants of Noord Brabant, Limburg and Zeeland. Since 2017, the orchestra has its own fund: the Philharmonie Zuidnederland Fonds. This makes it possible to generate an independent source of income so that the orchestra can continue to build connections with the region, education and innovation, the orchestra says. The Philharmonie Zuidnederland has offices in both Maastricht and Eindhoven.

The GLOW spreads

GLOW, the annual light art festival in Eindhoven, is also spreading its wings in the region. Indeed, this year innovative light art works will also be shown in the surrounding municipalities. The theme of this edition is “The Beat”.

The light festival wants to show and bundle the strength and identity of all municipalities. GLOW supports the cooperation between the different municipalities, where the strength of the Brainport region should be shown.

With the theme “The Beat” the heartbeat of the region is mapped and projected on striking buildings in Eindhoven, Geldrop-Mierlo, Waalre, Best and Oirschot. The various projections come together in a projection on Catharinakerk in Eindhoven, the birthplace of the festival.

Fan

Alderman Frans Stravers of the Municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo: “Personally, I have been a fan of GLOW for years. I also like working together and I think we can achieve more regionally than as municipalities independently. In Geldrop-Mierlo we therefore look forward to the cooperation with GLOW, other partners and residents”.

This show must go on, despite stricter COVID-19 rules

0

Parktheater held a comedy evening on Tuesday.

That’s despite the stricter anti-corona measures. The three comedians performed alternately in three halls, instead of together in one venue. So, the evening could continue.

The theatre spread 72 guests over the three halls. According to the new anti-corona rules, only 30 people are allowed to in one venue. However, various regions might make exceptions for theatres and cinemas.

It isn’t yet clear whether there will be such an exemption in the Southeast Brabant Security Region. The Parktheater, among other places, hasn’t yet received a definite answer.
