Italian? Your kids can come enjoy a story at the library

Are your children Italian or do they understand the language? Then Eindhoven Library and the Eindhoven Italian School invite them to come to Raccontastorie (Storytelling) on Sunday afternoons.

These two institutions have partnered up. Children and their families can participate in various activities – in Italian – at the library. These include readings, improvisations, theatre, and creative activities.

Eindhoven’s Italian School, “La Lampadina”, was created to sparking enthusiasm and stimulating interest in the Italian culture and language. It is aimed at young, school-aged children. This is done by developing their Italian language skills and confidence in communication.

Reading activities for the kids

The school’s weekly Italian lessons have been a great success. This success is why “La Lampadina” will now offer six to ten-year-olds a further opportunity to discover Italian traditions and culture – a series of reading activities at the library.

It is a well-known fact that reading is one of the most powerful learning tools. It can provide knowledge and, at the same time, enrich language development. The books used in the reading activities will explore various topics. These include not only the classics of mythology and fables. There will also be educational stories about the environment. And closer to the end of the year, Christmas stories.

Each event will include a creative activity following the reading. This will allow the children to use their imaginations and have some fun. The programme, as a whole, will provide children with cultural and linguistic tools. These tools are to strengthen their identity as bilingual speakers and, ultimately, as confident global citizens.

The first of these free events is this Sunday, 27 October. Then they will be on 3 and 24 November and 8 and 22 December. The activities will all run from 15:00 to 16:00 at the Library in the Witte Dame.

Don’t miss these during the Dutch Design week !

The Dutch Design Week started this weekend. Visitors to Eindhoven can delve into future design for ten days, spread over 120 places in the city. You should not miss these special designs.

Fifty shades of red

Designer Ilse Evers relaxes into a bright red chair. It is made from old fire hoses, just like the rest of her collection.

“I make belts, bags, but also lamps and stools. All from fire hoses. My neighbour once gave me such a hose. Then I looked at the material from all sides and started to take it apart. I discovered that it is very strong material. It is colourfast, with a very nice shine. And you can use it both indoors and outdoors, because it is not afraid of water,” says Ilse with a smile.

All Ilse’s designs are unique. “Each hose has its own colour and its own details. Fifty shades of red actually. In fact, no two products are the same.”

The converted fire hoses attract a lot of attention. Simon Le Fevre, visitor to the Dutch Design Week, also plops down in Ilse’s chair.

“It fits well. And it makes you think. To make wooden chairs, we cut down trees. We need animals to make leather chairs. But this is the reuse of old materials. I think that is important.”

Claybens

Many people look at the bricks of designer Emy Bensdorp. She makes clean bricks from clay soil contaminated by PFAS. “That is very special, because previously this soil could only be dumped,” she explains proudly. “During my work as a designer, I gained some experience with ceramics. Making ceramics entails baking clay at 1000 degrees in a special oven, so when I read that PFAS chemicals are rendered harmless around these temperatures, the penny dropped”.

So Emy found a way to break down the toxin PFAS. “I put the contaminated soil in an industrial oven. The heat causes the chemicals to disintegrate and a clean building product – the claybens- remains. We will soon do a large test and make 50,000 bricks, enough for a terraced house. It would be great if houses could soon be built with these bricks. The most important thing is that no more harmful chemicals will end up in the environment.”

Vorkoster

Everyone has experienced it: you think your food is still good in the refrigerator, but the expiry date on the packaging has just passed. “Many people tend to throw the food in the bin. Food waste is also related to the lack of using our senses. We have these natural abilities to check the quality of food through our senses, our sight, smell and taste. A banana peel gets brown, you see it. With Vorkoster I wanted to design the banana peel for every food product. A colour change indicator”, says designer Kimia Amir-Moazami

“This is a lid with a foil that responds to the pH value of the stored food. By changing colour, it shows whether protein-containing food is still edible or not. It therefore shows the actual shelf life,” explains René van Geer from the Secrid Talent Podium. “If the food is no longer good, the foil simply turns red. This prevents food from being thrown away unnecessarily.”

Rien van Ginneken and his wife look on with interest. “I think it is an intelligent lid. There are many products here at DDW that do not look immediately useful but I think I would buy this. Very good to prevent waste in this way.”

Manifestations at DDW again

Dutch Design Week (DDW) is just over a month away. One of the exhibitions, Manifestations 2018, will delve into the relationship between man and technology. From 20 to 28 October, during the 17th edition of DDW, the Veemgebouw in Strijp S, Eindhoven, will host this exhibition.

Humans and technology are becoming inextricably linked to each other in an increasing number of ways. We use it in our homes, our means of communication, and sometimes, even our bodies. There is no denying that we, as humans, are shaped by the technology we develop. What role do we want technology to play? This is what Manifestations will represent. Here, works from more than 50 artists and designers will be on show. The ‘matches’ and ‘mismatches’ between humankind and technology will be displayed.

The Future: We are in it together

Manifestations does not showcase the latest technological gadgets. Artists whose works will be displayed here, explore the interconnection between people and technology. For example, one of the displays is entitled ‘The Parasitic Humanity’. Here, garments of self-growing crystals show how artificial and natural materials react to each other, their environment, and those who wear them.

Manifestations curator, Viola van Alphen, believes technology should be nicer and more humane. “During Manifestations, we will look at technology, and the influence it has on us, from various perspectives. Tech experts, artists, designers, but, in particular visitors, can come face-to-face with the latest high-tech innovations”, she explains. The works being displayed this year are all characterized by a human dimension. Viola says, “Together, we can decide what this ‘human dimension’ actually means.”

Lots to see and do

After two successful editions, Manifestations will, once again, fill the 9th floor of the Veemgebouw with robots, e-fashion and wearables, Virtual Reality, and Artificial Intelligence. The best works of recently graduated Dutch art academy students will be displayed under the ‘Young Talents’ banner. There will be a futuristic handbag, 3D printed clothes, and so much more. There will also be workshops for children, lectures, performances, and meet-ups.

Animal hospital organises Christmas dinner for dogs

0

Christmas dinners are not just for humans. Our pets also deserve a nice dinner during the holiday season. That’s why Dierenziekenhuis Eindhoven (Animal Hospital Eindhoven) is organising a Christmas dinner for dogs on Sunday 15 December.

Dogs will get to sit down at a decorated table and enjoy a two course meal. ‘Think of a stew with rice or pâté appetisers served on a plate,’ says veterinary assistant, Puck.

The idea was created by the hospital’s owner, Stijn. ‘I don’t know exactly how that came about, but it is brilliant. It’s so nice to see the dogs enjoy themselves,’ Puck continues.

Dining in style

Around one hundred dogs attended the last dinner. ‘Most dogs come in style, wearing a tie or a jacket,’ Puck explains.

‘In different sittings, they take their place at the table. The big dogs go for the food immediately – it’s bite, swallow, gone. The smaller dogs enjoy more as they don’t eat everything, and take the rest home in a doggy bag.’

You can register your dog’s place at the Christmas dinner via Dierenziekenhuis Eindhoven’s website.

Organisation Sinterklaashuis Eindhoven needs volunteers

0

For the fifth year in a row, children and their parents are welcome to visit the Sinterklaashuis in Eindhoven. From the end of next week, they can not only meet Saint Nicholas and his Pieten here, but also take part in all kinds of fun activities. At least, if the organising foundation manages to find enough volunteers.

Because this is a big problem, says Olof van Gelder, chairman of Stichting Sinterklaashuis Eindhoven. “It will be the last time in the Steentjeskerk anyway, but we are already working on another location. So it would be very sad if we are forced to stop because we have too few volunteers.”

Helping hands

Helping hands are sought in many areas: in catering, in the volunteer room, but also several helpers and even an assistant Saint Nicholas are needed. Van Gelder: “Otherwise the whole party simply cannot take place and we have to disappoint thousands of children. During the week, we manage to get help from Summacollege. But especially on weekends, when most visitors come in, we have a problem.”
