PSV Carnival to honour weatherman

0

At this year’s Eindhoven Carnaval celebration, well-known Dutch weatherman, Piet Paulusma, will be put in the spotlight.

The PSV Carnival Club is to give Paulusma an award on the Market square. He is receiving this award because of his 35-year-long career. He is also a regular visitor to the Lampegat Carnaval. The Club’s Prince, His Thirsty Highness Robke, will present the prize.

“We think it is time to put Piet in the spotlight. If anyone deserves it, it is him. There are few people in broadcasting who can claim such an impressive career as Piet”, Bas Lammers, of PSV Carnaval, says. “He is also an avid Carnaval celebrity. He visits Eindhoven every year with his family and friends to celebrate this wonderful party with us”.

Surreal cycling

0

Imagine pedalling on a bike in a sports centre, while finding yourself in a futuristic world or the Austrian mountains. You can, at Cycledome, a new attraction in Strijp-S.

A huge screen is located in residential block 59 on the former Philips premises. Cycledome is part of a new innovative gym in that block. Anything can be played on the screen, such as a special mountain ride or a surrealistic world. The idea behind it is that indoor cycling should be a lot of fun. A new dimension is added to the sport.

In addition to the large screen and the futuristic look, the bikes also light up. The colour says something about how hard you need to pedal. White, for example, is very light, while red requires a lot of pedalling.

According to the owner, a bicycle attraction like Cycledome is the first in the Benelux region.

CKE celebrates 100-year anniversary

CKE (Centrum voor de Kunsten Eindhoven, or Centre for the Arts Eindhoven) celebrates its 100-year anniversary this weekend.

CKE has planned various events throughout 2020 to celebrate its anniversary. Its celebrations also form part of the wider 100-year anniversary celebration of Eindhoven as a city.

With its celebrations, CKE hopes to reach ‘people who want to experience art and culture for the first time,’ explains Dorothé Kuijten, who works at CKE.

Café C Live!

On Friday evening, Monique List, a local councillor who oversees cultural projects in Eindhoven, will officially open CKE’s year of celebrations. This includes Café C Live!, where she will be the pub quiz master at the CKE location of Pastoor Petersstraat.

Café C Live! will be held every Friday at 8pm this year. Dorothé describes it as ‘something active and cultural in a very accessible way. A combination of music, live entertainment, drinks and snacks’. There will also be music-themed bingo games and sing-a-longs.

Open day

This Saturday, CKE hosts an open day from 2pm to 5pm for anyone who wants to learn more about their lessons, courses and workshops. All kinds of disciplines are on offer, from music to dance, visual arts, photography, theatre, musicals and creative writing.

On Sunday, CKE hosts a day for amateur arts. Various amateur artists and associations will make a crossover project and will perform the end result to an audience. Some surprising crossovers will be made, such as a theatre company performing alongside a church choir.

Transformation

CKE has undergone many transformations over the past 100 years. It began life in 1920 as the Eindhoven Music School Foundation. In 1989, it merged with the Ballet and Movement Foundation to become the Centre for Music and Dance.

A year later, it merged with the Eindhoven Foundation for Art Education, finally becoming the Centre for the Arts Eindhoven (CKE) that we know today. Throughout these years, it also moved to several different locations throughout the city.

CKE aims to show people in Eindhoven that art and culture is accessible and is suitable for every person and budget.

City Poet nominees named

0

Three poets have a chance to become Eindhoven’s new City Poet. On 30 January, the current City Poet will pass on the baton.

A jury has chosen two nominees from 19 entries – Iris Penning and Linde ten Broek. This year, the jury also decided to give a wild card to Stokely Dichtman.

The jury consists of the current City Poet, Jessica Bartels, ED art editor Rob Schoonen, City Councillor Saskia Lammers, Professor Léon Hanssen, who is a writer too, and Mia Goes of Plint Publishers. They judged the poets on language, spelling, rhythm, content, authenticity, and connection with the city.

On 30 January, the nominees will compete against each other in an onstage performance. Afterward, the audience can give their opinion on the poems. The jury will ultimately decide which poet may call themself City Poet for the next two years.

Nominees

Iris Penning is a singer-songwriter and makes Poetic Pop. She has released three poetic CDs containing poetry collections. Linde ten Broek is a wedding official and soul storyteller. She uses stories to connect people and neighbourhoods. Linde describes herself as a creative pioneer.

Stokely Dichtman regularly does public performances as a poet/performer. He is Poetry Circle 040’s coordinator too. With his poetry and spoken word, Stokely wants to spread his message to the people of Eindhoven.

Visitors record for Eindhoven Museum

0

The Eindhoven Museum attracted a record number of visitors last year.

The prehistoric village and the exhibitions of the Eindhoven Museum are doing better and better. Last year, the museum received no less than 2,700 visitors more than in 2018, almost 73,000 – a record number.

“We are very happy with this growth. In 2018, we really picked up steam and we have been able to continue to do so. Especially during events and school holidays, visitors flocked in”, a proud Director, Ward Rennen, says.

Museum through the city

In addition to regular exhibitions, the museum also brings exhibits to the city. ‘Museum through the city’ was at various locations in Eindhoven, such as Park Hilaria and the station square. “It’s good to see we can interest more people in the history of Eindhoven by literally bringing the collection to the city and its inhabitants”, Rennen says.

Rennen recently presented the Eindhoven Museum’s plans for the future. A renewed concept with interactive installations in and around the existing location.

Set your alarm to see shooting stars tomorrow

0

There will be an abundance of shooting stars over Brabant early tomorrow morning. They will be particularly visible in west and south Brabant.

According to Reinout van den Born, a meteorologist from the weather channel, Weer.nl, the shooting stars will be visible to the naked eye. This is because the sky will be left clear after today’s rain. ‘There is some cloudiness, but in general it will be easy to follow the shooting stars,’ he says.

65 shooting stars per hour

At 2:00 o’clock on Saturday morning, about 14 shooting stars can be seen per hour. At 4:00 o’clock it will be around 30 per hour. The busiest period will be from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, where 65 shooting stars can be seen per hour.

Van den Born says that this phenomenon is not unique. ‘Shooting stars are common,’ he says. They occur when ‘a comet leaves a trail of dust, and then those dust particles penetrate the atmosphere. Sometimes there are so many that you can see one per second.’
