Bad weather did not dampen Carnaval mood

Even though the weather was disappointing, the regional hospitality industry is satisfied with this year’s Carnaval. After five days of celebration, the carnival celebrants can relax, and the pubs can be cleaned up.

After Chiara and Dennis, the other storm called Ellen pummeled the Netherlands during Carnaval. Many parades were cancelled or postponed this year. “Because of the bad weather, people came to the city a bit later than usual,” says Jan Witmer, regional chairman of the Royal Catering Association. “But everything inside is even cosier.”

Storm and rain lead to empty streets but fuller pubs. “The real carnival goer cannot be stopped by bad weather,” says Jimmy Meijer, owner of the Proost and Dependance pubs in Breda. “Locals in Breda were looking forward to this year’s Carnaval. Their enthusiasm can be seen from how much they drink. The turnover is good; that says it all.”

Issues with fake money

Many pubs were alert for counterfeit money during Carnaval. According to Witmer, getting this fake money problem is unavoidable. “Where there are large groups of people, fake money always appears. Then you have got a few glitches here and there.”

Many hospitality business owners have neighbourhood Whatsapp groups. If fake money shows up at a pub, they immediately sound the alarm. “On Thursday, a pub sent a message that someone had been caught with counterfeit money,” Jimmy says. “Then everybody is on high alert right away.”

Yael Davids at the Van Abbe

From Saturday 21 March, spread over ten rooms, the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven will be showing the work of Yael Davids, entitled Yael Davids: A Daily Practice.

This exhibition is linked to a specific moment in David’s career. In April this year, she will be the first Dutch candidate to complete a three-year research project entitled Creator Doctus (CrD), set up by the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. She was commissioned by the Van Abbe Museum to carry out this research. Her research is focussed on physical learning and is inspired by the work of Moshé Feldenkrais. Feldenkrais developed a method based on the principle that changing the way we move leads to a change in how we think, perceive and feel.

The exhibition Yael Davids: A Daily Practice can be seen from Saturday 21 March until Sunday 14 June at the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven.

Carnaval parade cancelled

The parade planned for Saturday in Lampegat (Eindhoven) has been cancelled. This was the decision made by the Eindhoven Carnaval Federation (FEC) after discussions with emergency services, the City Council and other parties involved.

The parade has been cancelled due to the poor weather conditions predicted for this weekend. The main culprit being strong winds.

The organisation made the decision to prevent accidents.”There is a big chance Carnaval trucks might be blown over by the strong winds,” comments an FEC spokesperson.

“Based on the current [weather] forecast, this is the only correct choice. To delay the decision would not serve the parade participants’ interests.” It is currently unknown if the parade will proceed on a different date.

The weather

On Saturday, strong winds with average speeds of between 29 and 49 km/h are expected. The winds could reach a speed of up to 75 km/h. This is cause for alarm regarding the planned Carnaval parade. Strong winds are also predicted on Sunday.

Mayor Jorritsma supports the Federation’s decision, saying “It is a brave decision on the part of the FEC and emergency services. I fully support it; safety comes first.” He also expressed empathy for the disappointment of volunteers and others involved.

KNCB to meet Noord Brabant cricket clubs

The cricket association of Netherlands (KNCB) recently announced a series of meetings. These will be held with cricket clubs across the country.

The regional meeting with four major cricket associations in Noord Brabant will take place at the MOP Cricket Club in Vught on 25 March. The initiative is part of “strategy 2019-2023”. This strategy was laid out by the KNCB. Its purpose is to exchange ideas with member clubs in Noord Brabant and increase the popularity of the sport.

Strategy 2019-2023

The 2019-2023 strategy is a five-year plan initiated to strengthen the growth of cricket in the country. A major goal of the plan is to increase participation in the sport. To ensure this, youth development programmes like Cricket4Kids are being conducted in association with schools and municipalities. In addition, providing more support to be able to retain women cricketers is outlined as an action. To make the sport more sustainable, the national association plans to support regional clubs in various areas such as coaching, advice and workshops.

Reaction from cricket clubs in Noord Brabant

Wanderers cricket club in Oss has confirmed their participation They will be attending the regional meeting with most of their board. According to their chairman, Ernst-Jan Sjamaar, “If the Wanderers want to be a part of the cricket community in the Netherlands, it is important to attend these meetings. The goal is to address the problems smaller clubs are struggling with – members, publicity, financial, coaches, grounds, councils, etc.”

MOP Cricket Club, who will host this meeting will be an obvious presence. From Eindhoven, the High tech Campus Eindhoven Cricket Association have confirmed plans to be present at the event. Eindhoven Cricket Club, originally part of Philips Sports Club, could not be reached for comment.

All-new cycling challenge

Are you looking for a cycling event that a little different? Take part in the High Tech Mountain Bike (MTB) Challenge.

This is a unique opportunity to do altitude training in Eindhoven. It includes a renewed 15km trail, per lap. These laps have a 180m difference in altitude. You can cycle through parking garages and ramps, as well as on a single tracks.

Does this sound like something you would enjoy? Then come to The Colour Kitchen (the Strip) Grand Café at High Tech Campus on Sunday, 22 March. The MTB Challenge start between 09:00 and 10:00.

Entrance costs €12.50, of which half will be donated to the Dutch Cancer Society. You can buy tickets here.

One person’s junk is another’s functional object

The Kazerne Home of Design is organising a collection campaign for the recently graduated design-talent, Baiba Soma.

For her graduation from the Design Academy, Soma made beautiful new items and remarkable design objects from discarded goods. These included electricity cables, fridge-doors, and washing machine parts. “My aim is to show the beauty of discarded products by transforming them into new, functional objects,” explains Baiba.

A lamp and a tapestry from Soma’s “Expired Whites” series are part of Kazerne’s current Circular Materialists exhibition. Both leading and starting design talents show how they deal with the contradictory theme of sustainable design. The exhibition is on until Tuesday, 3 March.

Donate unwanted goods

Donations for Baiba’s works are welcome until the very last day of the exhibition. They can be brought to Kazerne, in Paradijslaan, Eindhoven. The show is open every day from noon and entrance is free.

At the end of the exhibition, from 17:30 to 19:00, there will a workshop. For €5, visitors, under the supervision of the designer, can transform the yield of the collection campaign. These can be transformed into unique lamps, wallhangings and other design pieces. If you are interested in this, please buy tickets here.

It’s official: The Parade Theatre Festival is coming to town

The Parade Theatre Festival is coming to Eindhoven from Friday, 29 May. The organisers hope to add some theatre to this innovative city.

Earlier, it was reported that there were serious plans for the travelling festival to come to Eindhoven as well. Those plans are, now, definite. They are, in fact, kicking off their summer tour in this town. The theatre festival will be in Eindhoven for ten days, from 29 May to 7 June.

There will be more than 25 performances in tents on the Parktheater’s lawn. The theatre festival is already being held in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and The Hague. Eindhoven is the fifth city in the country to be included in The Parade’s tour.

‘Adding a little theatre to the city’

“Eindhoven is a fascinating city for technology and design”, Eefje Colsen, one of the organisers, says. “In this way, we can add a little more theatre to the city”. The predecessor of the theatre festival was called Boulevard of Broken Dreams. It came to Eindhoven more than 30 years ago. According to Eefje, there are still many people in Eindhoven who remember this.

“There will be, among other things, eight little theatres on the field, restaurants, a bar, and a floating windmill”, Colsen says. The organisers do not only want to collaborate with the Parktheater; they want to work with students from the Design Academy Eindhoven too.

The Parade is the only travelling theatre festival in the world. It is an event that totals about 80 performances in the area of dance, theatre, and music. Each afternoon there is an extensive programme for children of all ages too. It is called the KidParade. It has theatre shows and activities just for children.

Visitors can enter the grounds for free for the first hour, after that they have to pay €8.50. Children up to the age of 12 can attend the festival free of charge. Tickets for individual shows can be bought online or on the day. Performances that are suitable for non-Dutch-speakers are indicated with an LNP logo (Language No Problem). The organisers expect about 1,000 visitors a day.

There will be extra security on Geldropseweg during this year’s Carnaval parade.

In addition to the glass and cans ban that applies throughout Eindhoven, there will be an organised event location on Geldropseweg at the intersection of Stratumsedijk and Bilderdijklaan. “We are going to place fences here”, Dorus de Bruyn, owner of Dijk 9, announces. “We have arranged extra security.”

“Those security guards are in direct contact with the organisation that will keep an eye on everything, from afar. If it gets too crowded, the fences will close temporarily, so that it does not get too crowded on this narrow stretch of road”.

Last year things got out of hand. Drunken spectators wreaked havoc on seven cars. “It was just too busy here last year, and with too many people in one place, it simply becomes unsafe”, De Bruyn says. “We want to avoid that. Carnaval should be a celebration for everyone. It is a pity that security is needed, but safety comes first”.
