Illuminated sunflowers inspired by Van Gogh to go on display in Nuenen

0

A light installation inspired by Van Gogh’s sunflowers was a popular feature of Eindhoven’s Glow festival in 2019. This year the sunflowers will make a comeback – this time in Nuenen, where Van Gogh painted some of his most famous works more than a hundred years ago.

The sunflowers will go on display next to the Roosdonck windmill. The windmill lies close to the De Groot family’s farm. The family formed the inspiration for Van Gogh’s famous ‘De Aardappeleters’ (‘The Potato Eaters’).

The display is part of an initiative by Nuenen Council, the organisers behind Glow, and Van Gogh Brabant, an organisation preserving Van Gogh’s heritage. They state that the intention is to bring a ‘colourful homage’ to Van Gogh to the area.

The sunflower display was designed by light artists Hugo Vrijdag from Eindhoven, and Gu Yeliang from China. It was originally created for the 2019 edition of Glow, where they adorned the stairs outside the Witte Dame building.

Glow runs from 6 to 13 November this year.

Construction of Kennedylaan Park Hilaria takes off

0

Two days from now Park Hilaria will reopen in Eindhoven. One hundred attractions are now being built on Kennedylaan as Park Hilaria is expected to stay open for ten days. About 450,000 visitors are estimated to attend.

Last year the event was slightly adjusted due to corona. The attractions were further apart and the Feestcafé was not welcome. This year everything is back to normal. “We are very happy to be there again,” says Harold van Nielen of the Feestcafé. “Making people happy is what makes the heart beat faster.”

Swing Carousel

New at Park Hilaria is the ‘Around the World’ attraction, a sixty-metre merry-go-round. “With a hundred attractions, there is something for everyone,” says Mariola Scheepstra of organizer Eindhoven 24/7. “The swing carousel (zweefmolen) is new, I think you have a very nice view of the city from there.”

Twentieth Edition

It is the twentieth edition of Park Hilaria and so it is ten days of celebration. Showmen are happy to be back. “I was in Tilburg for this, which was a lot of stress, there is a bit more peace here,” says a fair operator of an attraction.

Unlike many other cities, the Eindhoven fun fair is not located in the city center, but rather the entire Kennedylaan is closed for the amusement park. “You have pleasant long hours, you don’t have to close everything at night, and the organization is very nice. It is a trusted location.”

Park Hilaria is set to open this Friday afternoon, August 5.

Animal shelter received 100 kittens and organises introduction day

ROZE foundation, which deals with the shelter of stray animals in the Eindhoven region, is organising an opportunity for animal lovers on Saturday to get acquainted with the kittens in the shelter.

The introductory day is not organised for no reason, the animal shelter lets us know. “In just a few months, our new animal shelter has filled up with animals, including a lot of cats and kittens”, administrator Alma van Dorenmalen tells us. “Every single one of them deserves a good home”.

There are almost a hundred kittens involved that need a new home. “In any case, it is not good for an animal to stay in a shelter for a long time”, Van Dorenmalen says. “As a result, they fall short of optimal socialization and it’s also a stressful situation for many. We want to give the animals a quick, good new start, which will promote their overall well-being and health”.

Those wishing to drop by on the afternoon of 27 August must register on the Stichting Roze website. To ensure it doesn’t get too crowded for the animals, only two visitors are allowed per household.

Brabantsedag jury and how the spectators can vote too

As a spectator of the Brabantsedag theatre parade, it is a pleasure every year to see the floats and the play of the sixteen float groups. Eindhoven News has been on the jury of Brabantsedag many times. This year too, Eindhoven News will be on the jury for the press award.

With one beautifully put-together creation after another, it becomes vivid by the afternoon, the audience is the big winner. The prizes that the wagon builders can take home will only be announced in the marquee in the evening. But what can be won and how does the prize distribution work?

The only prize that the spectator has a direct influence on is the public prize. The jury forms are handed out to the public before the parade are collected afterwards and the winners are determined based on the interest of the audience

The Press Award is handed out by the independent press jury that consists of media such as Omroep Brabant, Eindhovens Dagblad, Studio040 and Eindhoven News.

The Parelprijs is awarded for an exceptional group performance, construction, portrayal, or use of materials. This makes it the only prize that may not be awarded every year. In addition, there are three honourable mentions for special and conspicuous participants.

The parade floats are judged on three categories: Transfer of Subject, Artistic-Technical and Theatrical and Musical Quality. These three categories count equally and are judged by the professional jury, and experts in the field.

Stichting Brabantsedag is looking for professional jury members who have knowledge of the specific category and theme of that year (in this case Met Verve). The members of the professional jury do not have to be familiar with the Brabantsedag; apart from a small briefing about the parade, the jury is completely free to make its own judgment. In this way, the result is as independent as possible.

During the parade, the members of the jury are scattered over the route. This ensures that the judges cannot influence each other and that the quality of the play and technique is not a snapshot but a good reflection of the parade over the entire course. After the parade, the judges have to work hard. To arrive at a general classification in time, the assessments must be put together in a very short time. The points are added up per category and these points together make up the first classification. In the event of a tie between float-building groups, the jury decides which float ends up above the others.

This results in an overall ranking and a top three in each of the three categories, which is announced in the evening in the marquee, just like the other prizes. The overall winner is the group that scores best on all the parts together. This group, the overall winner, is taken from the ranking of the 3 categories. The top three in each category win a cup. In the meantime, the tension in the tent is palpable and the final results are announced. After first the numbers 16 to 11 are announced, we slowly work towards finding out who will be the new overall winner of the Brabantsedag and who will be immortalised in the Walk of Fame.

TU/e had students removed unjustly: ‘We were allowed to demonstrate’

One of the students who was arrested in March for demonstrating against the presence of oil company Shell at a TU/e career fair has been declared innocent by the judge.

About twenty students were arrested in March. Then they were fined heftily. Bram, one of the activists who was arrested at the university, was fined 300 euros. He challenged that, which meant that he had to appear in court on Friday 7 October.

The judge was then clear in his judgment, says Bram. “Our freedom to demonstrate should never have been curtailed. That confirms the feeling we had at the time. We were very surprised that after five minutes of demonstration, the police were right in front of us.”

Prosecution

It is unclear whether the prosecution will appeal the ruling. The OM (Netherlands Public Prosecution Service) had initially dropped the demand for the fine because it was under the assumption that the students made the entire career event inaccessible. This turned out not to be the case during the lawsuit – the fair could continue as usual. “The Public Prosecution Service then dropped the demand for the fine, but they wanted me to be found guilty. Fortunately, that didn’t happen,” says Bram.

Deteriorated

As a result of the events, the relationship between the university and the students has deteriorated, says the student-cum-climate activist. “Yes, that seems logical to me. If you think the presence of a company like Shell, which has been spreading lies about climate change for years, is more important than the well-being of your students, then that is not a basis for building a good relationship,” says Bram.

How can that relationship be improved? “Apologies from the university for its behavior would be in order. They haven’t come yet.”

But rather than apologies, Bram prefers something else. “Transparency. That the university is open and honest about its ties to the fossil fuel industry and how much money is involved. But that honestly seems like a utopia to me,” said Bram.

Eindhoven municipality raises flag on Coming Out Day

0

On Tuesday afternoon The College of Mayor and Aldrpersons stood outside and raised the LHBTIQ-flag to mark national coming out day.

It is a day to support those who wish to express their sexual identity. Alderperson Samir Toub had the honour of hoisting the flag. This is a day for us to show where we stand”, he said. “We are showing Eindhoven residents that we are a safe and diverse environment”.

Alderperson Rik Thijs was also in attendance. “I am out and proud”, he said. Ït is important for me as an alderprson to show that positions such as mine are also held by people from the LHBTIQ-community. It makes me proud as an alderperson to be raising the flag together”.

In the city there is much support for this day. “It is good that our municipality underlines that we can be who we are”, a young woman said. Ï am bisexual, and coming out was easy for me. But it is not an easy step for everyone”.

Patrick won Het Groot Dictee: ‘I’ve always had a love for language’

It is not entirely a surprise that Patrick van Aarle (47) from Eindhoven won ‘Het Groot Dictee’ (the big dictation) this weekend. All his life he has had a love for language. “When I still lived with my parents, I already participated in the dictation”.

With only one error, he managed to leave Volkskrant (newspaper) columnist Karin Sitalsing and VVD (people’s party for freedom and democracy) MP Judith Tielen behind, both with two errors. Patrick’s one mistake was in a small corner. “I got the word ijzertijd (Iron Age) wrong”, Patrick says. “It had to be without capitals. I wrote it with a capital letter. Those are the words where I still doubt. Just like the middeleeuwen (Middle Ages), for example”.

Things could go wrong very quickly, according to Patrick. “The dictation started with the title Groningen is zó (Groningen is fine). She read it so emphatically that I added an accent, which was right. So it could have gone wrong in the title”.

“I’ve always had a love for language”. But it remains a hobby, Patrick says. “I used to be good at languages. Back in the 90s, when I was still living with my parents, I already participated in Het Groot Dictee. But I’m also good with exact numbers. I studied physics and meanwhile I have been a teacher at the Gymnasium Beekvliet in Sint-Michielsgestel for 20 years now”.

Draw
So many talents. However, there are also certain weaknesses. “If there’s something I’m not good at, it’s drawing. Even if I have to draw something in class, for example a little car, the students already laugh at me. I’ve also wanted to do odd jobs around the house for a while, but I’m not very good at it either”, the smiling Patrick says.

Eindhoven touch
Although the dictation took place in Groningen, there was still an Eindhoven element to be found. “When I’m in Groningen, I want to take something Eindhoven with me. I wore a shirt with the well-known light bulb. The skyline of Eindhoven could be seen in the light bulb. Some students had already noticed that I was wearing a colorful shirt again”.

Eindhoven breakdance group win world title in Japan

The breakdance group The Ruggeds set a good example to Louis van Gaal’s football team last weekend. At the World Championships Breaking in Japan, the Eindhoven dance crew won all prizes.

In Okinawa, the Eindhoven breakdancers competed against teams from all over the world during the 25th edition of ‘Battle Of The Year’. The dance crews competed for the titles ‘best showcase’ and winner of the battles. Both prizes were won by The Ruggeds from Eindhoven.

Justin Bieber

It is not the first time that The Ruggeds were successful. For example, the crew danced in a video clip by Justin Bieber, they were in the final of NBC’s World of Dance and they will be in Dutch theatres until the end of this year with their performance Decypher.
