CDA and Ouderen Appèl want temporary emergency bridge to Stratumseind

The little bridge over the Dommel between Stratumseind and Stratumsedijk will be closed for over a month. Ouderen Appèl Hart voor Eindhoven (elderly appeal heart for Eindhoven), (OAHvE) and the CDA (christian democrats) now want an emergency bridge to replace it.

Earlier, OAHvE asked council questions about the work on the little bridge because the group fears it will cost hospitality entrepreneurs money. Indeed, just during Glow and Dutch Design Week, the Stratumseind is now poorly accessible.

The groups would have preferred that the bridge could remain open in the weekend, something that entrepreneurs on Stratumseind would also have counted on. Therefore, the groups also want to know if something went wrong in the communication.

In addition, visitors to the major events taking place before December would have to detour at least 300 metres to get to Stratumseind, CDA and OAHvE write.

Finally, the groups report that, as far as they are concerned, an emergency bridge should be constructed. After all, that would have been done before.

Sint Lucas students win audience award GLOW

Students of art school Sint Lucas won the audience award at the GLOW light festival with their artwork ‘Rainbow’. Through their work on the Vesteda tower, they wanted to spread the message that everyone can be themselves. This was appreciated by the visitors, because the Eindhoven MBO students received the most votes.

The students of the Podium- en evenementtechniek (Stage and Event Technology) programme were inspired by two things when creating the ‘Rainbow’: On the one hand by the magic of the rainbow, nature’s most beautiful light show. On the other hand, by the well-known rainbow flags, which show diversity in gender, race, age and all the other ways we differ from each other, according to the designers.

That fitted well with the message that the students of Sint Lucas wanted to spread. Namely that everyone can be themselves regardless of gender, sexual preference, race or age. With that they managed to touch the public, because the Rainbow received the most votes. The students not only received an award on Saturday, but also 1500 euros. The GLOW organisation will also keep in touch with the winner with a view to possible cooperation next year.

Professional jury

Next to the Audience Award, there was also a Talent Award to be won. The professional jury awarded one of the light artworks with a GLOW Talent Award. The Shadow Organ came out as the winner. The work tells the story of the negative and positive effects of the corona pandemic.

Free heaters and blankets to combat the cold

There was a run at the Catharinakerk in Eindhoven on Wednesday afternoon. Heaters, blankets and footmuffs were given away to poor people in front of the church. “It feels like a godsend,” says a woman visibly emotional.

She came by bike from Geldrop to be at the moment of distribution. Not only for herself, but also for an elderly friend who was unable to make the trip. “I’m in debt restructuring and that friend of mine h state pension. We don’t have two a cents to rub together, so this really feels like a gift from heaven”, she says while trying to hold back her tears. Another woman who has just acquired a footmuff and heater is less enthusiastic. “I think the initiative is great, don’t get me wrong. But it’s crazy that this is necessary in a country like the Netherlands.”

it’s a shame

The initiator, Hugo van Rooij of the (Z)onder Dak foundation, would also have preferred it not to be necessary. Normally he is committed to the homeless, but with the increasing number of residents struggling due to the high cost of living, he decided to launch this scheme. That idea came about three or four months ago. “I received a message from a family that was out in the cold, actually asking if I could do something for them. And that’s how the ball started rolling, but I didn’t expect it to become so big.”

In total, seven hundred heaters, blankets and footmuffs were distributed. Bought piece by piece by Van Rooij, partly with the help of donations. Those products were gone in no time, because people were waiting in long queues. “Someone just came and I had to disappoint them. In retrospect I think ‘Hugo, if you had bought more stuff, you could have helped more people’.”

However, joy reigns among the crowd. ‘Hugo, thanks’, one can hear everywhere. “Without this heater I would have been out in the cold. I hoped it wouldn’t freeze too much, because the pipes would also freeze soon. Then I’d be in even deeper trouble, because I can’t afford to have repairs done. So I’m very happy with the heater.”

Unique discovery on Stratumseind

Hundreds of partying people walked past  a catering building on Stratumseind unsuspectingly for years. Understandable, because there is nothing to see from the outside. Yet, inside, a renovation contractor stumbled upon sections of a medieval wall.

The contractor called in construction historian Jan van der Hoeve, who immediately contacted cultural historian Bauke Hüsken, also a member of the Eindhoven heritage organisation Henri van Abbe Foundation. He rushed to the monumental building on Stratumseind to see what makes this wall so special. He soon found out that the small wooden beams in between are very old.

Corbels

These wooden planks, also called corbels, were used in the Middle Ages as support beams for the upper floor. Most houses used to need additional structural support, so the corbels were necessary.

In the past, the building on Stratumseind, with the building next to it, formed one dwelling. The wooden beams were probably on the façade of both houses.

The wall is said to have been built between the years 1300 and 1500. Hüsken suspects around 1350 because of the construction technique used. To date, no traces of this magnitude have been found from that time anywhere else in the city.

Renovation

Earlier there were discussions about whether the old catering building should be demolished because it was no longer safe. After protests in the city, it was decided to renovate the building.

Now that this unique find has been made, it is necessary to look for ways to properly preserve it. The municipality has agreed to place glass plates in front of the wooden beams. In addition, Hüsken wants to place a plaque next to the beams. This should provide clarity and explanation to the people walking by. As soon as there is a suitable plan, the renovation can continue. The building will accomodate a restaurant and a number of homes.

Stepping, scooting and skating at Kids Urban Culture Festival

No soccer lessons or field hockey lessons, but freestyle soccer and stunt stepping on Ketelhuisplein last weekend. The E-moves Urban Culture Festival at Strijp-S targets children for the first time.

This is part of the new policy to get as many people as possible into Urban Sports in Eindhoven. Andrey Grekhov, artistic director of organiser E-moves, is proud of the event. “It is good to give attention to self-expression and creativity from an early age, that can be an outlet for children”, he said. He wipes the sweat from his forehead. “In addition, we picked a beautiful, warm day. Ketelhuisplein turns into an oven on a day like today, haha!” Visitors to the Urban Culture Festival could engage in BMX, skating, free-running, (hip-hop) dance, scooting, freestyle basketball and even graffiti, among other activities.

Like father, like son

“You notice that creativity is in a bit of a decline lately, which is why it’s extra good that kids are being introduced to Urban Sports today”, a father says. His son is about five metres away spraying his name on a cardboard with a graffiti spray can. “I come from this scene myself, so it’s extra cool to see him so interested too!” A woman wearing a white Hello Kitty shirt is also enjoying the sunny day at Strijp-S. “I feel like a little kid again”, she laughs. “Whether you want to step, swim or play sports: there’s plenty to choose from”.

Further along, a girl drops down on a beanbag. “I already come here to the square sometimes to skate, then I also find it very cool. I like to see other kids getting on their scooters. If they start young they also have plenty of time to make the choice which sport they want to practice”.
“I do hate it when there are sluggish kids on the track”, a boy sighs, wearing a helmet. Still, it shouldn’t spoil the fun. “I go here every year. Often I don’t have anything to do on Saturdays, luckily now I do”.

Waalre jubilee party called off early

The jubilee festival to celebrate Waalre’s 100th anniversary was called off early on Sunday. It was because of the heavy storm that was expected to pass through in the evening. “The programme of Waanzinnig Waalre was cancelled on Sunday due to the bad weather forecast. The foundation unfortunately had to take this decision,” the organisation said in a statement.

‘Pain in the heart’

According to the organisation, the event site, near the Huis van Waalre, is home to many valuable items. The built-up facilities must therefore be taken down on time. “The Waalre100 foundation takes this decision with pain in its heart. Both the equipment and the safety of the guests are at risk.”

Catch up later

The Waalre100 foundation plans to catch up with Sunday’s programme at another time. When that will be is not yet known. Over the past two days, however, there were already some celebrations. These included a local talent show, the brass band performed and children could have fun during all kinds of activities. Sunday afternoon several choirs performed and in the evening singer Ferry te Lits was on stage.

Party in the Park

We hope you found out that Eindhoven has quite a few nice public parks. Especially with this tropical weather.

One of the most central ones is the Stadswandelpark (just to manage expectations, it is not called Central Park). This is a nice relaxing venue to visit, stroll around, have a drink, a workout, or just relax on the grass, so if you haven’t visited it already, we can certainly recommend it, just by yourself or bring your family. Also note that the park is almost seamless connected with the Genneper Parken, so if you like green spaces, close to your home, this is the place.

To motivate you even more, this weekend (June 1-3) is probably one of the best times to visit it, as long as you like music, wine, beer or food.. and frankly which Eindhoven News reader doesn’t. There is a family-friendly festival called Slow! Park from Friday to Sunday (check the website for more details), where you can visit the park, and also taste and drink wines, all kinds of food, a biergarten and much more.

So check it out, there is something for everyone, even the very health conscious ones, and enjoy it, alone, with your friends or family. Or try to meet up with some of the members of our community, to share this great Park-experience.

Live Music

Daniel Kemish is an ‘Americana / Folk Singer’, born in England, whose voice goes right to the core. In 2015, Daniel traveled to Nashville and recorded his debut album at Ocean Way Studios. Last year Daniel spent a month alone in a mountain refuge, to compose his second album in isolation. No electricity / running water or telephones and only a wood stove for heating / cooking and melting snow. Daniel came back with a new sound and a new style that shows that he has grown up as both a songwriter and a performer.

A Million Shoes consists of three very enthusiastic musicians: Cees, Jack and Joseph. They have a large repertoire of original covers which they have transformed into a swing version. Result: a familiar sound in a new jacket. A Million Shoes plays with authentic instruments: double bass, upright piano, guitar, accordion and drums. And not unimportant: They are known for making atmosphere!

And our resident DJ NickLeBeat will be spinning pure vinyl grooves: reggae, vintage soul & funk.

Marathon Eindhoven, much more than running, this weekend

0

We believe that most of you, that are interested in long distance running, know that the weekend of October 13 and 14 is the big marathon weekend. So we are not suggesting to sigh up, coz you have done that already, but we want to point out that you dont need to run to participate…

Also this year, and maybe more than in previous editions, there are all kind of activities organised around the event. Several places have a special program, e.g. de stadsbrouwerij, and there is lots of music and fun around the route, especially at Stratumseind.

As both days host various races, starting Saturday late afternoon, almost all the time there is some excitement along the route, find the exact program for more details. So its a great way to perhaps get to know Eindhoven a bit better, and somehow contribute to this great event and perhaps run next year, or the year after, or..
