Code yellow for Brabant on Thursday afternoon-KNMI weather alert

Thursday will be stormy again with strong gusts of wind. The KNMI has therefore announced code yellow in Brabant for Thursday afternoon.

The warning applies to the entire country, with the exception of Overijssel, Gelderland, Utrecht and the Wadden Islands. Rijkswaterstaat warns traffic to take care.

Wind gusts of 75 kilometres per hour

There will be strong winds, with gusts of up to 75 kilometres per hour in our province. This will happen mainly during showers that pass over the country. For the time being, code yellow applies from two o’clock until six o’clock in the afternoon.

KNMI sets code yellow if there is a chance of dangerous weather. During the storms of the past week, code orange and even code red, a warning for extreme weather and high risk, was issued as well.

Patrick won Het Groot Dictee: ‘I’ve always had a love for language’

It is not entirely a surprise that Patrick van Aarle (47) from Eindhoven won ‘Het Groot Dictee’ (the big dictation) this weekend. All his life he has had a love for language. “When I still lived with my parents, I already participated in the dictation”.

With only one error, he managed to leave Volkskrant (newspaper) columnist Karin Sitalsing and VVD (people’s party for freedom and democracy) MP Judith Tielen behind, both with two errors. Patrick’s one mistake was in a small corner. “I got the word ijzertijd (Iron Age) wrong”, Patrick says. “It had to be without capitals. I wrote it with a capital letter. Those are the words where I still doubt. Just like the middeleeuwen (Middle Ages), for example”.

Things could go wrong very quickly, according to Patrick. “The dictation started with the title Groningen is zó (Groningen is fine). She read it so emphatically that I added an accent, which was right. So it could have gone wrong in the title”.

“I’ve always had a love for language”. But it remains a hobby, Patrick says. “I used to be good at languages. Back in the 90s, when I was still living with my parents, I already participated in Het Groot Dictee. But I’m also good with exact numbers. I studied physics and meanwhile I have been a teacher at the Gymnasium Beekvliet in Sint-Michielsgestel for 20 years now”.

Draw
So many talents. However, there are also certain weaknesses. “If there’s something I’m not good at, it’s drawing. Even if I have to draw something in class, for example a little car, the students already laugh at me. I’ve also wanted to do odd jobs around the house for a while, but I’m not very good at it either”, the smiling Patrick says.

Eindhoven touch
Although the dictation took place in Groningen, there was still an Eindhoven element to be found. “When I’m in Groningen, I want to take something Eindhoven with me. I wore a shirt with the well-known light bulb. The skyline of Eindhoven could be seen in the light bulb. Some students had already noticed that I was wearing a colorful shirt again”.

Eindhoven breakdance group win world title in Japan

The breakdance group The Ruggeds set a good example to Louis van Gaal’s football team last weekend. At the World Championships Breaking in Japan, the Eindhoven dance crew won all prizes.

In Okinawa, the Eindhoven breakdancers competed against teams from all over the world during the 25th edition of ‘Battle Of The Year’. The dance crews competed for the titles ‘best showcase’ and winner of the battles. Both prizes were won by The Ruggeds from Eindhoven.

Justin Bieber

It is not the first time that The Ruggeds were successful. For example, the crew danced in a video clip by Justin Bieber, they were in the final of NBC’s World of Dance and they will be in Dutch theatres until the end of this year with their performance Decypher.

Workshops on Artificial Intelligence in Eindhoven library

Everyone has to deal with Artificial Intelligence, but not everyone is aware of it. That’s why the library in Eindhoven is organising the AI Parade. During the whole month of May you can learn all about this smart technology and how it affects our daily lives. Monday was the first workshop.

“We are training our computer”, one of the participants said. The participants are working on machine learning, which allows the computer to learn things on its own. With pieces of fruit, they are training the computer. “We took hundreds of pictures of an apple. This allows the computer to recognise the apple”, another participant says.

In everyday life, everyone deals with AI (artificial intelligence, ed.), but for many people it is still unknown. That’s why the AI Parade is coming to the library in Eindhoven. With various workshops and lectures they will discuss Artificial Intelligence.

Learning
“Besides machine learning, the participants were also given an explanation of what AI is”, workshop instructor Randi Nuij says. The participants found the workshop instructive. “A computer has to know a lot before it can really do anything”, one participant said. “It doesn’t always get it right either. The computer thinks I am a background and it also sometimes thinks an apple is an orange”, another participant adds.

Fresh algorithm generator
A mini-expo will also be on display during the AI Parade. Until 16 May, the Fresh Algorithms generator is on display in the library. Based on five questions, the machine creates a recipe for a meal of your liking. And that can be anything from world cuisine to something easy to Dutch food.

The AI Parade in the Eindhoven library lasts until 31 May.

Last weekend in Eindhoven: the festival of Autumn, Durga Puja

It is that time of the year. When the rains are over and the winter is yet to set in. When the leaves start turning gold and yet there are those fleecy white clouds float in the azure sky. There is that nip in the air that marks the advent of autumn in Bengal, India. The season for Bengal’s most popular festival- the Durga Puja (Worship of Goddess Durga).

Eindhoven Sharad Utsav (ESU) in co- operation with Stichting Bonghoven organised the greatest festival of the Bengali community, Durga Puja in Eindhoven from 12 October to 14 October 2018 at the Wijkscentrum Blixems. Stichting Bonghoven is a small group of few Bengali families who have come together to organize and celebrate not only Durga Puja, but also such other events to showcase their cultural diversity and actively carry forward the traditionally rich legacy of Bengal. It aims at promoting friendship, harmony and cultural exchange with other organizations and groups in the Netherlands.

What is Durga Puja?

Durga Puja ranks among the most popular festivals in India. It is orignally a four-day festival and is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga. It is celebrated with immense fanfare and great enthusiasm. It is a significant festival of Bengal, India that has great social and cultural importance. For the Indians, especially Bengalis, it is much more than a devotional experience. It’s an intrinsic emotional bonding with their land, their people and their community.

The Highlights of the event

The grand event began on the 12th October with an Indian Food Festival which had various food stalls offering delicious cuisine from different parts of India. ‘It is like being in a carnival,’ said Miriam with enthusiasm. ‘I came mainly to taste some dishes like kebab and Chicken curry.’ The crowd on the opening day was roughly around 250 and they enjoyed good food and drinks. The cosy corridor inside the    Blixems was transformed into a cozy culinary feast hall showcasing dishes from known Indian restaurants in Eindhoven and other cities in the Netherlands. It was the perfect opportunity to sample dishes from the stalls  without their exorbitant price tags! There were also jewelleries and craft stalls along with music and dance performances.

The goal of the Eindhoven Sharad Utsav (ESU) team was to recreate the magic, the nostalgia, the euphoria that people enjoyed during Durga Puja in Bengal, India here in the Netherlands far away from home, in a comfy, homely atmosphere, and yet staying true to the authentic experience. As the president of Stichting Bonghoven Mr. Dipankar Roy said in his opening speech: ‘ There has been numerous meetings, hours of planning, buying and shopping, ordering items from India, months of frenzied preparation to bring forth this event succesfully.’

Culural performances and traditions of Bengal

Durga Puja in Bengal is a time for bonding with family and friends; for leaving behind one’s worries, if only for a while. The rigours of daily life are in some sort of suspe

nded animation during the four days of fun-filled cultural carnival. Routines, schedules, diets and deadlines all go for a toss. And the best of dance, oratory and music skills beg to be flaunted in the umpteen cultural events.

In the Eindhoven Durga Puja too there was plenty of fascinating cultural performances for all- Drama, Dances from various parts of India, Singing performances, Quiz and

Sit & Draw events for children, Dandiya (a folk dance from the state of Gujarat, India where men and women both can participate playing to the beats with colorful sticks wearing their ethnic attire), the much awaited traditional Dhunuchi Naach (a devotional dance performed holding an earthen pot filled with burning coconut husk and camphor) .

The event ended on Sunday 14th October with the ritual of ‘Sindur Khela, (Vermillion game) a Bengali Hindu tradition where married women smear each other with vermillion on the last day of the Durga Puja. ‘It feels ecstatic to be here, to feel the magical pull of traditions with which we were raised in Bengal,’ said a visitor who came from Den Haag to be a part of the festivities. ‘The event is well-managed, if I hadn’t come I would have missed it big time.’

Eindhoven Sharad Utsav (ESU) team in co- operation with Stichting Bonghoven looks back with pride and is excited to bring in the Durga Puja in Eindhoven next year and extends its good wishes to all the viewers (500+) who visited them to support their event for the three days and Eindhoven News who was their media partner all throughout..

Traditional torchlight procession in inner city cancelled again

The annual torchlight procession (Fakkeltocht) in Eindhoven on Christmas Eve will not take place this year. At least not physically, but the tradition will be continued digitally.

According to the organisation, a physical march for tolerance, in which thousands of people participate annually, is not responsible because of the Corona situation. However, there is a live stream, with photos and videos expressing the message of solidarity, freedom and respect. The stream can be followed on Instagram and Facebook on Christmas Eve.

Tradition

The torchlight procession has been held since 1992. Thousands of people first gather on  Wilhelminaplein, holding a torch. The crowd then walks through the city centre.

The initiative was triggered by an attack on Turkish migrants in Solingen, Germany, in the 1990s. Five people lost their lives. The torchlight procession is therefore dedicated to tolerance and a tolerant society.

Situations involving fake dementia patients were emulated in the centre of Geldrop on Tuesday morning. The aim of such an event was to draw attention to Alzheimer’s disease.

Purpose
The campaign hopes to draw attention to the disease and increase awareness of the circumstances associated with it.
