Musician in a ‘shop window’ visits nursing homes

0

On Tuesday afternoon, rapper Glen Faria paid a surprise visit to the Peppelrode nursing home in Eindhoven.

The moving shop window is an initiative of the De Bijenkorf retail chain. By visiting the elderly at home, singer Faria and the department store want to give the residents a sense of togetherness. The ‘window’ went to Maastricht too.

Faria played piano and sang his song ‘Goed dat je er bent’ (‘Nice to have you’). That’s also Eindhoven’s slogan. “While writing it, I was inspired by the images of the empty streets. These are usually nice gathering spots for people,” Faria says.

Large venues may open conditionally

Several large venues can open their doors to the public again this month.

That’s following a government announcement. On Tuesday, the cabinet said it’s starting pilot projects to test accessibility tests practical effects. So, stadiums, venues and casinos in the country may reopen.

In the region, this concerns the Muziekgebouw, Natlab, Parktheater, Effenaar, and Jack Casino. PSV is also allowed to welcome fans again during the next home match against FC Groningen. That’s after months of lockdown.

Venues can hold some events under certain conditions. For example, visitors must have proof of a negative COVID-19 test the cabinet has announced.

Music, sport, and gambling

From 16 to 18 April, the Muziekgebouw (350), Natlab (42) and Parktheater (250) are allowed to admit visitors. On 24 April, it’s Jacks Casino’s turn, with 350 visitors. On that day, PSV is permitted to receive 4,000 supporters for the game against FC Groningen.

For the other professional football club in the city, FC Eindhoven, a maximum of 450 fans applies on 30 April. The first division club then plays against FC Den Bosch. That weekend, 130 people can also visit the Effenaar. The Eindhoven music venue will let people who want to attend an event know in advance what to do.

“It’s good news, but it really surprised us,” PSV commercial director, Frans Janssen, says. “We’re happy about this. But, it naturally raises many questions.”

“For our fans, but certainly for us too. We’ll now consult with the authorities concerned. Then we’ll communicate how we deal with this situation.”

Commemoration cancelled

Every year, on 4 May, the Netherlands remembers its dead. Those who have died in wars or peacekeeping missions since the beginning of the Second World War.

And every year, women and children’s who have perished are commemorated at the VrouwenVredesmonument (Women’s Peace Monument) on Parklaan. But, not this year. “The reasons for this are obvious and need no further explanation,” the Eindhoven Stichting Vredesburo (Peace Office Foundation), writes on their website.

They organise this annual event. The organising committee does, however, call for a personal commemoration. “It shouldn’t pass by silently.”

‘More relevant than ever’

“The people who attend every year should feel that it doesn’t matter. On the contrary, we consider it more relevant than ever. Women are still disproportionately affected by violence.”

“We hope everyone will find a chance to take pause in their own way and find a way to express themselves. Lay a flower, write a poem, compose a song. Use the (social media) channels that are available,” says the organisation.

Eindhoven’s Peace Office Foundation wants people to remember all these fallen souls in a special way. “Carry out the message that violence can’t be justified. One victim is one too many.”

“We hope to meet at the monument again next year. But this year, everyone will have to have their own small commemoration,” writes the foundation. For information about this Eindhoven commemoration, please contact the Peace Bureau.

Eindhoven-based artist wins Award

The Eindhoven artist and designer Bart Hess received the Design Award 2021 of the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Noord-Brabant. He gained international fame with a slime dress he designed for Lady Gaga and his ‘body sculptures’ for the Dutch National Opera & Ballet.

The jury was full of praise for his work. “Whoever enters the world of Bart Hess is permanently touched. Performances so close to reality, yet so far removed from it, bring about alienation that gets under the skin”.

Ina Adema, the Queen’s Commissioner and chairman of the Cultuurfonds Noord-Brabant (North Brabant Culture Fund), presented the Design Prize to the Eindhoven native at the Design Museum in Den Bosch. At the same time, a presentation was opened that had been put together by Bart Hess. Not with work by the artist himself, who was born in 1984, but he has decided to give up-and-coming talents a stage. Specifically Fransje Gimbrère, Joep Truijen and HIPS (Clémentine Schmidt & Josse Vessies).

Their work can be seen until 19 September.

Alternative to Brabantsedag

This year, there will be a kind of Brabantsedag, after all. A more sombre set-up with theatre and many food stalls. That’s what the organisers of the theatre festival in Heeze have announced.

At the end of April, the board had announced that the event would be cancelled for the second time in a row. The reason for the decision was the ‘unpredictable course of the corona crisis’. Now that corona measures are being relaxed, some things are possible at the end of August.

‘Having to miss out twice in a row is hard to swallow for Heeze, the float building groups and the hundreds of volunteers. That’s why there will be an alternative; no big public event, but a nice, pleasant weekend,” the Brabantsedag foundation writes.

As an alternative, the 16 float-building groups will each build their own theatre kitchen. In it, they’ll prepare and serve a menu in a theatrical manner. There are also musicians to make the party more enjoyable.

More information can be found on this website.

Alternative Brabantsedag cancelled too

The alternative celebration of Brabantsedag will be cancelled after all due to new restrictions, the organisers announced.

There was certainly joy when it was announced last week that there would be an alternative event. No traditional Brabantsedag in Heeze. The groups involved would open theatre kitchens where visitors could have a bite to eat and be served theatrically.

Now, a week later, little is left of that optimism. Due to too early, too broad measure relaxations, the number of COVID-19 cases has exploded. That means that the alternative Brabantsedag is also cancelled for the time being.

It was a go

“The government had promised a great summer. And anti-COVID-19 measure relaxations were far-reaching. That meant all lights were on green for this alternative to the theatre parade,” says a Foundation spokesperson.

“Until Friday. There’s uncertainty and preparations to be done. So, the Brabantsedag Foundation has decided not to organise the event in the way it was announced.” There is, however, a glimmer of hope.

“The concept has been received enthusiastically. And it’s too good not to be executed at another time. We’re still considering a suitable moment in the future,” the representative says.

That’s why the foundation hopes measures will be relaxed in mid-August. If that’s the case, the organisation will attempt to hold the event after all.

Park Hilaria can receive 450,000 visitors with extra security guards

0

Despite the corona rules still in force, Park Hilaria expects to be able to receive 450,000 visitors next week. However, more security guards and ‘crowd managers’ are being deployed to steer the Eindhoven fair in the right direction.

With the extra security guards and slightly larger site, the organisation hopes to create extra space for queues. Visitors can then keep sufficient distance from each other. Besides, special pressure gauges and counting cameras would track whether there are too many people inside. The website shows whether it is a suitable time to come. “We are calling on people to spread out. It is always busy at the beginning of the evening. We want to ask people to also use the afternoon”, explains Mariola Scheepstra of organiser Eindhoven247.

Park Hilaria is regarded as a so-called ‘flow-through event’. This means that large groups of people are allowed under a number of conditions. The terraces on the site may therefore also be open half an hour longer than those at the catering industry in the city centre.

Close

If the Hilaria site becomes crowded, the organisation would intervene. “Then we close the entrances for a while until things have calmed down again.”

Festival Smitske sold out after all

0

The goal of selling 750 tickets within a week was not reached, but a few days later, the festival of the comedian Gerrie Smits is sold out after all.

The organiser says he is happy that the 750th ticket has been sold. “Despite the fact that we were unable to sell the tickets within a week, we continued anyway”, says Smits. “The last few days, tickets suddenly went very fast. We needed just over a week to sell the 750 tickets.”

Now that the last tickets have been sold, Smits can focus on getting the rest of the festival up and running. “We already have a collaboration with DJ La Fuente and the Evoluon, and now we’re going to work quickly to put the finishing touches on it,” Smits said.

The festival will take place on Saturday 16 October from 14:00 to 23:00.
