Thirteen people from Eindhoven receive medal in Muziekgebouw

It is Koningsdag (King’s Day) and so it is time again for the traditional list of honours. In the Muziekgebouw twelve chosen Eindhoven citizens received a Royal Decoration from Mayor John Jorritsma. One resident got his ribbon pinned at the Ministry of Defence in The Hague.

During the ceremony in the Muziekgebouw there was a moment of silence for all the receivers. There was plenty of appreciation for the new ribbon bearers. Seven people are now ‘Lid in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’ (member of the order of Oranje-Nassau), three are ‘Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’ (knight of the order of Oranje-Nassau), two were awarded ‘Lid in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau met zwaarden’ (member of the order of Oranje-Nassau with swords) and one became ‘Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw’ (knight of the order of the Dutch Lion).

The thirteen lucky ones

Eva González Pérez gained national fame when she brought the benefits affair to light. For years, she has been a great support to fellow countrymen and women who got stuck in the Dutch system through no fault of their own. She was appointed ‘Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau”.

Since 2003, Andre van Gorp has been active as a volunteer for a vulnerable group of clients of SWZ Zonhove, an institution for people with severe multiple disabilities in Son en Breugel. He is now ‘Lid van de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’.

For years, Willem Heerings has played an important role in the commemoration of the liberation of Eindhoven and Nuenen. The fact that Nuenen still celebrates the liberation today is partly thanks to Heerings. He is now ‘Lid in de van Oranje-Nassau’.

Since 1990, Henri van Hout has been the dean of the St. Catharinagilde (guild) in Strijp. Where he is involved in many activities. He received the decoration ‘Lid in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’.

Dolf Hulshoff has been active as a volunteer since the end of the 1980s. He has dedicated himself to improving the quality of life for local residents and to connecting people in Vaartbroek, Heesterakker and Bokt by organising joint activities. He has been appointed ‘Lid van de Orde van Orange-Nassau’.

Ans Hulshoff is a very committed volunteer who has been active for decades. She has been a volunteer for numerous social organisations since the 1970s. She also received a medal.

Leo Joosse is an example of natural leadership. He has shown his added value in several places within the Commando Luchtstrijdkrachten (Royal Netherlands Air Force command). He was honoured as ‘Lid in de Orde van Orange-Nassau with swords’.

Tiny Korsten has been involved as a board member since the Stichting Bewonersorganisatie Burghplan in Stratum (foundation of the Burghplan residents’ organisation in Stratum) in 1992, most of the time as treasurer. She is also involved in organising all the activities in the neighbourhood. She is now ‘Lid van de Orde van Orange-Nassau’.

Frans Prinsen is a binding factor within Strijp. For years he has been a selfless volunteer for various organisations. He also received a ribbon of honour.

Dick Schoot is one of the figureheads of endoscopic gynaecological surgery in the Netherlands and has set up a working group for this. His achievements are far more extensive than can be expected from a general gynaecologist. He was the only one to be awarded ”Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw.

Jopie Verdonk is a volunteer with his heart on the sleeve and in the right place. Since 2004 Verdonk has been involved in the South-East Brabant branch of Hoormij NVVS, the national patient organisation for people with a hearing impairment. She is now ‘Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’.

Frans van Vugt became a member of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Sociaal Psychiatrisch Verpleegkundigen (dutch association for social psychiatric nurses) in 1979. On a voluntary basis he was active in profiling and promoting the professional group. He was awarded  ‘Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’.

Eric Nettekoven received his award at the Ministry of Defence in The Hague. He is co-founder of the Stichting Veteranen Brabant-Zuidoost (foundation brabant-zuidoost). The foundation was set up in 2006 and he has been a board member ever since. He was decorated as ‘Lid in de Orde van of Oranje-Nassau with swords’.

High Tech Campus brains are spotting falcons

To give the bright minds at the High Tech Campus a break and let them discover the nature around their own offices, Portuguese expatriate Nuno started organising a monthly ‘wildlife’ walk. It is now a huge success.

Nuno Corado came to Eindhoven because his wife started working at Signify. He decided to use his background as an ecologist to set up a business. In Corona time, he started offering wildlife tours to companies, but now he also organises public tours of the High Tech Campus grounds for which anyone can sign up.

The ‘safari’ takes place once a month; on this particular Tuesday afternoon the sun is shining and hundreds of employees of the High Tech Campus are walking around the grounds in groups. They all do a lunch walk, but this lunch walk is different. Guide Nuno points out, his group stares, and listens to his stories about the falcons and a blue tit.

“Really nice”, an IT specialist says with a smile. “That there is so much to see here, which you don’t expect at all. But that it is a special area where we work, I knew that”. A lady with pearl earrings and spotless white trousers heaves a sigh when the walk is over. “I saw a lot, a peregrine falcon, a kestrel and a blue tit. It was lovely”.

After an hour, the employees return to their desks, satisfied and relaxed. They can recommend such a safari to anyone.

No festival this year on De Markt: ‘Terraces bring in more turnover’

0

Markt in Eindhoven will not be holding a King’s Day festival this year. As a replacement, a two-day event will take place on the square in front of Paterskerk on Vestdijk. Artists including 2 Brothers On The 4th Floor, Wilbert Pigmans and Danny Froger will be present.

According to Ruud Bakker, chairman of Stichting Koningsdag Eindhoven (king’s day foundation eindhoven), the entrepreneurs on Markt choose to leave the terraces open because of financial reasons. “This year they want to see if it is financially more attractive to keep the terraces. If you put a stage on the Markt, the terraces have to close a week earlier. That, of course, means a lot less turnover”.

Event
The two-day event is now held in front of Paterskerk on Vestdijk. The festival on 26 April is mainly dominated by 80’s and 90’s with 2 Brothers On The 4th Floor as main act. On King’s Day itself – 27 April – singers including Danny Froger, Wilbert Pigmans, Ferry de Lits and Vieze Jack make their appearance. There is room for some three thousand visitors.

Marijn best MBO fashion student: ‘Really very special’

Marijn van den Elsen, third-year student at Summa College in Eindhoven, may call herself the best MBO (secondary vocational education) student in the Netherlands in her field. She won gold during Skills Heroes, a competition in which more than a thousand MBO students participate.

The student coming from Limburg is beaming from ear to ear. She had not expected first place. “I am super happy! I thought it was already an honour that I was entered by the school, but I had not taken a gold medal into account. The other participants were also super good”.

Passion

Marijn explains why she enjoys doing it so much. “I find it so beautiful to sew and to make things. Much more fun than designing. Especially if the end result looks good, that’s always nice”.

Future

She is now in her third year at Summa College in Eindhoven. What she wants to do after that? “I would like to continue my studies. So another step up within this field. After that, I might want to work in the world of haute couture or theatre, as a costumer”.

First million euros in donations for Philharmonie Zuidnederland

The Philharmonie Zuidnederland Symphony Orchestra has collected its first million euros in donations through its own fund. A large part of the amount came from a single donor from Noord Brabant.

The large total amount came about through several donations from him in the past four years, together with his legacy after his death.

In recent years, many visitors have come forward with the intention of donating to the orchestra, says relationship manager Maud Douwes. “It also happens that people leave a sum of money in their estate. The amounts vary, but every gift is of great value to us”, she says.

So too now, Douwes says. “He was looking for several music and cultural causes to include in his legacy, so we also received a sum. He was already a major donor and was also regularly invited by us”, Douwes says.

For future generations
Director Stefan Rosu is delighted with the donations and legacies. “Because we can preserve the classical and symphonic tradition in the south of the Netherlands and continue it for future generations”.

Rosu sees art and culture as the ‘foundation of a healthy society’. “We fulfil a major role in this. The resources that come into the fund help to strengthen the quality of the orchestra’s activities”.

The Philharmonie Zuid Nederland Fonds (fund)
The Philharmonie Zuidnederland makes classical music in the southern Netherlands and seeks to connect with all inhabitants of Noord Brabant, Limburg and Zeeland. Since 2017, the orchestra has its own fund: the Philharmonie Zuidnederland Fonds. This makes it possible to generate an independent source of income so that the orchestra can continue to build connections with the region, education and innovation, the orchestra says. The Philharmonie Zuidnederland has offices in both Maastricht and Eindhoven.

Eindhoven band hosts benefit evening to support Ukrainian band

The Eindhoven band Komatsu will hold a rock benefit evening on Tuesday for the war victims in Ukraine. The formation will also do this to give a Ukrainian rock band a boost.

That band, the Somali Yacht Club, had to cancel their entire tour of Europe because of the war. Next Tuesday, the men were to perform in the Eindhoven Effenaar. The band from Lviv is not allowed to leave the country. The band members showed pictures of the events in their country on social media. “We want you to see this. This is what war in Europe looks like”, they said.

Deeply moved

‘Our staff is deeply touched by all the events and the despair that speaks from the message of Somali Yacht Club’, the pop venue reveals. That’s why the venue will now hold a stoner rock night with Komatsu, but this time for Giro555. Somali Yacht Club will be paid the agreed amount for the performance.

Music connects

“It is good on all sides to support these hard-hit musicians. It is heartwarming that the local rock scene reacts so positively to this last-minute action, which suddenly feels even more urgent because of the absence of a Ukrainian band. Music connects,” says programmer Marco Roelofs.

Besides Komatsu, Trek Flek and An Evening with Knives are also on stage on Tuesday.
