Brainport Eindhoven’s New Horizon event at the Evoluon

Sun, student teams, refreshments, entertainment, and a high-profile network together made the first summer edition of the Brainport’s New year gathering, New Horizon, a success. No doubt, the music created an energetic festive vibe.

The gala started with a warm welcome by the chairman of the Brainport Foundation, John Jorritsma, followed by an inspiring speech by futurologist and founder of the Next Nature Foundation, Koert van Mensvoort.  On Tuesday, hundreds of visitors raised their glasses to a promising future on the terrace at the pond of the iconic Evoluon.

After a brief welcome note, John Jorritsma reflected on the recent investments by the government. He especially shed light on initiatives that relieve the pressure on the regional housing market and the road network.

Thinking about a new horizon

Koert van Mensvoort began, “In the next ten minutes, I want to take you to a new horizon,”. He highlighted futuristic thinking and how technology such as 3-D printing and solar-powered automotives would interlace our future.

“We need a melting pot”-Mensvoort

Mensvoort emphasised the importance of collectively building the future. The contribution of the practically and theoretically educated, young and old, with every possible background. He also reinforced the significant role of the Evoluon in the growth story.

Indeed, the event put Evoluon in the thick of things after a long time. Future next has fresh plans for the iconic venue. As a result, this September, an exhibition called Retro Future, which focuses on timeless questions of the future, will open to the public.

Muziekgebouw and Philharmonic to work together more intensively

The Eindhoven Muziekgebouw and ‘Philharmonie Zuidnederland’ (philharmonic orchestra) will be joining forces for another four years. The two organisations want to join forces further.

Until now, they have mainly worked together on the rental of halls and the use of all kinds of facilities. But the two organisations now also want to cooperate more intensively in the areas of marketing and cultural education. Furthermore, both institutions want to explore the possibilities of using digital applications to reach a wider audience.

“I am looking forward to exploring all the possibilities of strengthening each other, together with the Muziekgebouw. Making classical symphonic music accessible to everyone, that is the objective”, Intendant Stefan Rosu, of the Philharmonie Zuidnederland, says.

The new cooperation agreement will run until the summer of 2026.

Children’s drawings animated as film, band playing live music

A film based on drawings by primary school pupils in the city was shown in the Eindhoven Muziekgebouw. The animation film was musically supported by a professional band.

Drawing
It is part of the project ‘Tekenen voor de Vrijheid‘ (drawing for freedom). Muziekgebouw started the project in cooperation with primary schools from neighbourhoods that could use some attention. All children made a drawing about war and freedom, following a lesson programme by War Child. An artist then made a film of those drawings.

Theme
The band Fuse played the music and there was also a special guest: Zuhoor Tolou, who fled Afghanistan when he was 13 and has been living and working in Eindhoven ever since. He shared his story with the 600 primary school pupils that were present.

URE builds all-new self-driving racing car after ‘intense shock’

It was a great shock: the URE 15 electric racing car burned down under the watchful eye of the students. Less than six months later, however, the students have built a new car: the URE16. The new car will be presented on Thursday afternoon.

That URE16 (named after the student team: University Racing Eindhoven, ed.), had to be built without the students being able to fall back on the old model.

“That indeed made the task more difficult,” says Joos Kat, team manager of URE. “Normally we can use the old car when testing software and hardware. We didn’t have that option now, so we had to use an even older model for those tests – not ideal.”

‘Always alert’
But the students have learned from the accident. “It was a severe shock for everyone but the most important thing is that no one was hurt. The driver was able to get out of the car quickly enough. We have now built in extra security. With the previous car, we met all safety requirements. We have learned that even though you follow all the procedures, you always have to stay alert.”

“The value of building the car is the experience we gain with it, we make everything ourselves.”
Joos Kat, team manager of URE

But burned down or not, the autonomous racing car URE 16 has changed a lot from the previous model. This was not by necessity, Kat explains. “Those plans were already there before we lost the previous model.”

Conversion
“The drive shaft used to have 400 volts, which is now 600 volts. We have designed a new battery pack and new engines,” the team manager explains. “The biggest change compared to the URE15? It’s in the design of the chasis. With the previous car it took us four hours to build it up from a self-driving model to a controllable model. That is no longer necessary. We have built all the functions for autonomous driving into the chassis. Conversion now only takes a few seconds.”

Prizes
With these changes, the student team wants to compete again for the prizes for both autonomous racing and electric racing. “At the autonomous race last year in Spain, we came first,” says Kat. “With driver in the car, we came second in Assen. We want to compete for prizes with this car too.”

Because with those awards, the students get a confirmation of their good work, Kat explains. “It’s not like we’ll immediately come up with innovations with this car that we could apply in industry when we’re done studying. The value of building the car is the experience we gain with it. We make everything ourselves, write the software ourselves. That practical knowledge is enormously valuable when we start our careers.”

Full calendar
But it is not that far yet. First, the students have a summer full of races ahead of them. “In three and a half weeks we will be in Assen for the electric race. In mid-August there is an unofficial world championship in Germany, where we will race both autonomous and electric, and we finish again in Barcelona, with the autonomous race,” Kat says.

De Parade gets ready for its first ‘real’ edition in Eindhoven

The first two editions of De Parade in Eindhoven required a lot of experimentation and improvisation due to the Covid regulations. That worked out quite well, but the theatre festival is happy that this year, the festival can take place as it was intended.

In 2020, De Parade came to Eindhoven in an alternative form, namely with a caravan of theatre performances. The following year, it remained unclear for a long time whether the festival could go ahead at all. It could eventually, but the QR codes and keeping a distance created a different atmosphere than the organisers are used to.

“But it was great that we could do something at all”, spokesperson Nadine van Pinxteren says. “Also with an eye to the future. Those two improvised versions were also important with a view to the future. They ensured that we stayed on people’s minds”.

‘First real edition’
And that has worked, because ticket sales are going well, says Van Pinxteren. “We are aiming for 750 to 1,000 visitors on the weekend days. But it is the first real edition, so it is difficult to estimate exactly what to expect”.

Growth
The Eindhoven edition is not the largest edition of the festival, but it is nevertheless a full-fledged event, Van Pinxteren says. “Not all versions are equally large. In The Hague, too, it is a bit smaller in scale. But we are growing. In Eindhoven, we now have five theatre tents and two restaurants. In addition, there is the children’s parade for the little ones. There really is something for everyone”.

There is therefore plenty to see, Van Pinxteren informs us. “I am looking forward to Grindtegeltuin (gravel tile garden) by the Eindhoven hiphop duo Frino. They call it ‘brabohop’ themselves. It’s really about the people in the city”.

Costumes and wigs
In addition, Zuidelijk Toneel, (southern theatre), which also took the stage at the festival last year, will present a special performance. “They will be performing a play by Austrian playwright Johann Nestroy. Last year, they performed another of his plays and it was well received. This piece is more about love than last year’s. It is a mini-operetta with accompanying costumes and wigs. It will be very beautiful”, Van Pinxteren says enthusiastically.

It promises to be a beautiful weekend. “The weather seems to be cooperating well and we can see through our social media that the festival is alive. I can’t wait to get started myself. Last week we started building up the festival, and it’s going to look really nice”.

Dutch Technology Festival kicks off again

The Dutch Technology Festival will kick off on Wednesday in the Klokgebouw building. For a whole week, all kinds of activities will be organised to enthuse young people in particular about a career in technology.

There will also be a lot of networking between companies, government institutions and knowledge institutes from the technology sector. According to the organisation, the festival has become the stage for promoting technology.

During the kick-off at Strijp-S, speakers from Brainport Development and ASML, among others, will be present. They will discuss the importance of promoting technology, also to be able to attract enough professionals and engineers in the future. This is of great importance to the high-tech region of Eindhoven.

Night of the Nerds

In the coming week, children and young people can take a look at various tech companies in the region. In addition, they can do tests and set to work on technical assignments. For example, Night of the Nerds is being held at Strijp-S. There, children learn how to programme music, test new games or build their own racing car.

Corona

In recent years, the event was on hiatus due to the corona pandemic. In 2019, the week attracted more than 40,000 visitors.

Volunteers look forward to return of Brabantsedag: ‘Goosebumps moment’

Finally back, that is the prevailing feeling among the organisers of the Brabantsedag. The annual wagon parade in Heeze returns to the streets of the village after a two-year corona break. Volunteers can’t wait. “It’s already starting to itch”.

Harald van Schie, organising member of the Brabantsedag, can’t believe his luck. Just like any other enthusiast, he says. “Heeze is a very close community, at least 20 per cent are really active members of the parade. It’s all about the Brabantsedag all year round. And so finally again without corona troubles. After 62 years of continuously staging the parade, it feels super weird that it hasn’t happened in two years. But that makes it extra nice that it can happen again. A real goosebump moment, it is already starting to itch”.

Enthusiasm

Many members of the organisation stopped. Still, not continuing the parade was not an option, Van Schrie tells. “The bond with the event is so important for Heeze. The flags and posters are already hanging out. The village forms a unity”.

The organisation sees hospitality as an important spearhead for the coming edition. “It often takes place on one of the hottest days of the month. We are therefore planning to set up a covered grandstand for the public”.

Brabantsedag

The Brabantsedag is a float parade that takes place annually on the last Sunday in August. Sixteen float groups choose their own theme from an overarching one, on which they design and build their own float. The themes always have a connection with the history of Brabant.

The spectacle attracts between 30,000 and 40,000 visitors each year. Quite a number, considering that Heeze has a population of just under 10,000.

With Verve

This year’s theme – ‘Met (with) Verve‘ – had already been decided on in 2020. The edition of that year, which was eventually cancelled, had the same theme. Van Schrie: “Painters from Brabant are central. It is up to each building group to design a kind of ‘two-layer translation’ of a painting they have chosen”.

~Ed. – With the word ‘verve‘ there is a word play on ‘verf‘ (paint).

Van Maerlantlyceum celebrated graduation gala: ‘A historic edition’

The Van Maerlantlyceum had an extra special gala on Tuesday evening. Not only this year’s exam candidates, but also the final years of the cancelled corona editions were welcome. The Eindhoven high school was already very enthusiastic about the party preceding the results. “It promised to be a fantastic evening”.

Gala head organiser Erwin van Oudenhoven remembers it well from previous years; the cancellation of the gala, twice. Corona threw a spanner in the works. “Super sour, of course”, he says. “Last year everything was as good as arranged, but we ended up in lockdown in the same week.”

It is an experience where students usually arrive in couples in luxury cars driven by a chauffeur, so that there is a long procession in each village or town every year. Evening dress in style and entering the venue on a red carpet complete the gala. According to Van Oudenhoven, the festive exam closing ceremony is indispensable.”The fantastic gala memory is just part of it. That’s how you really round off your time at secondary school”.

Full of positivity

According to Van Oudenhoven, some 450 examinees celebrated the final party, along with 158 former students. The response was super nice, he says. “Many former students are now studying, so they had exams or another reason not to join, but in general they were very happy with the initiative”.

According to the organiser, it is therefore not difficult to have enthusiastic pupils. “It often happens by itself. Because the year classes are not very different from each other, they met enough acquaintances, which made it extra fun of course”.

Historical

Van Oudenhoven has been organising the gala for eighteen years, but cannot deny that this edition was the most unique. “Indeed, it was a historic happening. It was the students’ evening, nobody can take that away from them anymore”.

Pianist Ethan van der Velden (14) wins Muziekconcours 2022

On Sunday, 14-year-old Ethan van der Velden emerged as the winner of the Muziekconcours (music competition) 2022 in Eindhoven. The young pianist took home the first prize of €1000.

With his piano playing, he managed to enchant the professional jury in Muziekgebouw Eindhoven the most. With that, Van der Velden left five other musical talents behind during the classical music competition for young people aged 8 to 18. To get into the final, all six finalists had to compete in two rounds. Both rounds took place in Archipel elderly care centres, where they played for residents and clients.

The choice of these locations did not come out of the blue, by the way. The Muziekconcours is organised by Stichting Vrienden van Archipel (friends of Archipel foundation). This year was the ninth time that the music competition was held.
