No festival this year on De Markt: ‘Terraces bring in more turnover’

0

Markt in Eindhoven will not be holding a King’s Day festival this year. As a replacement, a two-day event will take place on the square in front of Paterskerk on Vestdijk. Artists including 2 Brothers On The 4th Floor, Wilbert Pigmans and Danny Froger will be present.

According to Ruud Bakker, chairman of Stichting Koningsdag Eindhoven (king’s day foundation eindhoven), the entrepreneurs on Markt choose to leave the terraces open because of financial reasons. “This year they want to see if it is financially more attractive to keep the terraces. If you put a stage on the Markt, the terraces have to close a week earlier. That, of course, means a lot less turnover”.

Event
The two-day event is now held in front of Paterskerk on Vestdijk. The festival on 26 April is mainly dominated by 80’s and 90’s with 2 Brothers On The 4th Floor as main act. On King’s Day itself – 27 April – singers including Danny Froger, Wilbert Pigmans, Ferry de Lits and Vieze Jack make their appearance. There is room for some three thousand visitors.

Six get-togethers with Seamus Heaney’s poems

The Volksuniversiteit regio Eindhoven offers a poetry course these first few months of the new year. The sessions run for six Wednesdays. The first already starts on 18 January, so you will need to sign up soon.

Greta Timmers (1952), who runs the course, has been an educator all her working life, the larger part of which she spent at the International School of Eindhoven (ISE), teaching English language, literature and theory of knowledge at the pre-university level. Recently retired, she misses the exchange of ideas that literature can bring, as well as the connection with people from diverse backgrounds and with diverse experiences.

She offers courses in poetry since most poems can be read and discussed in the time available – a practical reason – but also because there is such a range of possible approaches; poems connect through their authors, their times, their genre, their themes, their voices -the possibilities are legion. The keyword for this course is enjoyment. Shared enjoyment.

If we winter this one out, we can summer anywhere' — The Estate of Seamus Heaney

Heaney

In this course, you will discover how Nobel prize-winning Irish poet Heaney uses language and images to (re)create experience. Although no two readers read the same poem, you will see how his poetry can speak across space and time because it touches on experiences we all share. In Heaney’s case, these are family roots, being rooted, a sense of place and individual and national culture and history.

“…between clear blue and cloud/between haystack and sunset sky/between oak tree and slated roof/I had my existence. I was there./ Me in the place and the place in me.”

Because you will examine very carefully how Heaney uses language and how his language depends on context to be fully understood, this is a course for those who enjoy sharing ideas about poetry, as well as for those who welcome an opportunity to strengthen or extend their command of English.

Come as you are

This is a standalone course; there is no expectation of prior knowledge or homework, although opportunities to read further will be suggested.

Days: Wednesday evenings starting 18 January. For a full lists of dates, check the site of the Volksuniversiteit.

Time: 19:00 to 21:00 hrs.

If you like to register for the course, please click here.

A musical remembrance of Tagore and Nazrul in Eindhoven: A magical evening of poetry, dance & music

The Indian Heritage and Cultural Foundation organised a cultural evening of remembrance to mark their respects to the poet laureate of India, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). Tagore is India’s National poet, the first Asian and the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel prize for Literature in 1913 for his collection of poems, Gitanjali (Song Offerings). It was also an evening to celebrate the birth anniversary of the national poet of Bangladesh, Kazi Nazrul Islam (1899-1976).

The programme was held in the prestigious Park Theatre in Eindhoven on 25 May 2019 from 17:00 onwards. Renowned Rabindra & Nazrul Sangeet exponents, university scholars, western vocalist, eminent dancers, elocutionist, and instrumentalists from across the country performed in this programme to pay their humble tribute to these two literary stalwarts. They mesmerised the audience with their soulful performances.

This exclusive programme was free and open to the public and was attended by people from all parts of the Netherlands, including Eindhoven. The organisers believe in Tagore’s philosophy of “oneness of humanity” and are committed to celebrating his vast creation that focuses on intercultural understanding.

The programme’s chief guest, Ms Miriam Frosi, City Councillor (CDA, Eindhoven Municipality) who strongly believes in diversity helping in creating a better and intelligent society, spoke about the values of such intercultural events. “I am happy to be a part of this event, and we are enriched by the values of Tagore and Nazrul. A magical evening of poetry, dance and music.” She thanked the organisers for hosting such a programme and spoke of her pleasure to learn about Tagore’s visit to the Netherlands in 1920 and his association with the Dutch utopian thinker and writer, Frederik Willem van Eeden, who translated many of Tagore’s creations in Dutch.

Expats get to know the city again: “They have to feel at home here”

0

For the first time since the outbreak of corona a year and a half ago, there is a life tour of Eindhoven for expats again. It is being organised by the Holland Expat Center South.

The tour is meant  for helping new expats get to know the city, but is also  a network meeting place for social contacts. One of the guests is the Indian, Shrabashe. She has only lived in Eindhoven for a few months, where both she and her husband work. She says: “The contacts I have now are mainly colleagues from Tilburg University. I do enjoy meeting other expats who are also new here”.

The group of guests who join the tour is diverse. They come from the United States, Turkey, England or India, for example. Most of them have not lived here for long and are eager to get to know the city and our culture. Shrabashe: “I don’t find the difference in culture so difficult. I have lived in many different places and I have got used to having to adapt all the time. Here in the Netherlands, people are generally friendly and what is unique about the Netherlands is that we can talk to everyone in English. That’s more difficult in most other countries”.

Getting used to the new city

City guide Anneke Leenders takes great pleasure in showing these people around. She loves telling them about her city and is happy to help the newcomers with the challenges they face. Leenders: “One of the tricky things we encountered just now during the tour is our traffic regulations. The cycle path is really only for cyclists and the pavement for walking. Many expats don’t know that. During the tour, I can tell them how it works here”.

During the tour, guests learn many facts about the city, such as about Philips, the Sint Catharinakerk and where the entertainment areas are. “This helps the expats. They not only learn about the city, but they can also talk about it with friends and family. That way they feel more at home here,” Anneke Leenders says.

Expats or internationals

Josine Frankhuizen, from the Holland Expat Centre South, organises various activities for the expats. According to Frankhuizen, when the expats stay here longer, they are no longer called expats, but internationals: “Eindhoven wants to keep the knowledge we bring in as long as possible. That is why we try, as much as possible, to make the people who come to work here and their families feel at home here”.

The guided tour is a first step towards this. “You often see that the person who already works here has enough contacts through their work. The partner, often the woman, quickly becomes isolated. At the start tonight, they start talking to each other and make their first contacts. In addition, they now know who we are and we can help them further with, for example, finding work”, Frankhuizen says.

From now on, the tour is every first Friday of the month.

Renovated Van Gogh Village Museum popular

It was closed for six months, but after its opening, the renovated Van Gogh Village museum in Nuenen is attracting a lot of attention. People come from far and wide to view the life of the Brabant master painter. Also Nuenen residents see a whole new museum which brings out, for some, a piece of childhood sentiment.

The former Vincentre has been expanded with an exhibition space and a new wing, and this has not gone unnoticed by visitors. “We are from Amsterdam ourselves and today is a day with bad weather anyway, so it was a good idea to visit a museum. Vincent van Gogh’s art has stolen my heart and here in Nuenen, of course, you see that emphatically reflected”, one of the visitors explained.

“I am originally from Australia and am now in the Netherlands for two months. My parents are Dutch and I therefore want to get to know better where my roots lie”, another woman told Studio040.

Nuenen residents
So international visitors, although Nuenen residents are also curious about the renovated museum. “I grew up in Nuenen, the film was for me a kind of recognition tour through my youth. I saw places in nature where I have been and where I played as a little girl”, one woman explained.

“I volunteer at the museum. I hadn’t been there yet after the renovation,” a man says. “It has become a real museum. Very spacious, lively and also challenging. When you come through the main hall, you can’t believe your eyes. It just looks like the old Van Gogh museum no longer exists. It is very impressive, especially the Light Lab created in collaboration with ASML. I have read that you need at least three hours to read and see everything, so this does invite you to come back,” said the volunteer.

Queen Máxima
Visitors agree and thus have nothing but praise for the revamped Van Gogh Village museum. Especially his life and painting techniques attract visitors’ attention. On 16 May, Queen Máxima will officially open the renovated Van Gogh museum. With the new renovation, the museum aims to grow to 40 thousand visitors a year.

Festive entertainment at your door

0

The Eindhoven Arts Centre (CKE) and the Parktheater have joined hands with neighbourhood organisations.

Together, they’re bringing art and culture right to the doorstep of residents in various parts of the city. There will be parades with live music and theatre and dance performances. These will be travelling through the streets of Eindhoven from today onwards.

Every evening, under the name Warme Winter Stoet (Warm Winter Parade), a different neighbourhood will be surprised by these performances. The will continue until right before Christmas. The last one will be on Wednesday, 23 December.

Supporting local organisations

The idea was born from all the upcoming public holidays. Because of the anti-corona measures, gatherings with loved ones are out of the question. The CKE and Parktheater,  therefore, decided to support the various neighbourhood organisations.

“This year’s holidays are going to be weird. So, there are no big family Christmas gatherings. No o dancing in the new year. No friendly neighbourhood activities. That’s why we want to bring a little warmth and light to the neighbourhoods in a different way,” Wikke Peters and Marjon Reus, of CKE and Parktheater, say.

“In the dark days before Christmas, we’ve organised all kinds of great activities. These are on the initiative of the neighbourhood organisations. All, of course, corona-proof.”

Dual purpose

“These activities have a dual purpose. Not only are we bringing warmth to people’s doorsteps. We’re also allowing dozens of artists to make a meaningful contribution to the city at a time when the culture sector is struggling,” Peters and Reus conclude.

These activities are made financially possible by Woonbedrijf.
