Eindhoven Box Cup 2021 canceled

The fifth edition of the Eindhoven Box Cup, which was to happen from 20 to 24 May, has been canceled.

Earlier, the organisation announced that the tournament would continue because of the sponsorship from Jack’s Casino. The casino would compensate for the lack of paying spectators at the event. Specifically, it was announced that 200 boxers would compete.

However, due to the persistent corona situation, many athletes receive negative travel advice to come to the Netherlands. Therefore, the selections from various Asian countries, Russia, Ireland and England, have withdrawn from participation in the tournament.

As a result, the organisation cannot deliver the quality as previous editions. That is why, in consultation with the international boxing association AIBA, the organisation decided to cancel the tournament.

The Eindhoven Box Cup is the only AIBA tournament in the Netherlands and is supported by the NOC * NSF. The tournament was also cancelled last year due to the corona crisis.

TU/e wants to grow; needs extra budget from The Hague

The Eindhoven TU wants to recruit many more students and continue to grow. But that requires a lot of money from The Hague, for example to solve the housing problem. Board chairman Robert-Jan Smits emphasized this again on Monday afternoon during the opening of the academic year.

“It is unfortunate that students come to Eindhoven and then there are not enough housing units. We don’t want that. It has to remain livable for them. So we therefore say that we would like to welcome more students, but then there has to be money. For the region and the tasks that lie ahead and for the university”, Smits said.

Housing shortage

The housing shortage among students remains, despite the realisation of many new rooms. The TU/e is popular. Over the past decade, the number of students doubled to 13,000. And it won’t stop there, if it is up to Smits. “That number can double again, but not without additional budget from The Hague”.

Monday marked the kickoff of the new academic and scientific year. In addition to Smits, former politician Diederik Samsom and ASML top executive Peter Wennink were also invited to speak.

Pussy Riot at Effenaar

0

The Russian feminist punk rock band, Pussy Riot, were in Eindhoven. They performed in the concert hall, Effenaar, yesterday.

Pussy Riot is best known for their provocative performances. In their song lyrics, they often criticize Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin. This has caused them several problems in Russia, and the band members have even been imprisoned in Russian prison camps.

Their performance at Effenaar is part of their new project, Riot Days. One of the band members, Maria Alyokhina, has also recently released a book with the same title, detailing her time in jail after Pussy Riot’s anti-Putin protests.

Watch a documentary and meet the main character in person

DOCfeed, Eindhoven’s documentary festival, has partnered with The Student Hotel to show some of the best documentaries. During the summer, every first Thursday of the month will be devoted to DOCfeed Documentary Nights.

Documentaries are an easy way to discover more about life and our planet. Most of these documentaries are only screened in Dutch without subtitles in other languages. But, at the DOCfeed Documentary Nights, English subtitles will be added.

On 2 May, DOCfeed will show their opening documentary, Schapenheld (Sheep Hero). This poignant documentary portrays the story of Stijn, a shepherd with a romantic world view. His idealism clashes with the harsh reality of having to be a modern entrepreneur. In this cinematic portrayal, we learn more about Stijn and his family in their quest to keep the tradition of sheep herding alive.

Shepherd Stijn will also be present at the Documentary Night to answer all your questions right after the screening. The screening starts at 19:45. Tickets only cost €5.

Local visits all Eindhoven Quiz spots

0

Sandra Groeneveld from Eindhoven visited 100 special places.

These were all featured in the Grote Eindhoven Quiz. She took a selfie at each of the sites. It started as a joke. During the quiz, Sandra didn’t know where the zebra crossing at Strijp-T was.

Even though she knew she had seen it somewhere before. “When I saw the picture during the quiz, I couldn’t think of it. A few days later, I came across the crossing at Strijp-T.”

Selfies

“I sent a selfie to the friends I had played the quiz. I added, ‘I should have known about these’,” Sandra says. “Then they jokingly asked whether I was going to visit the other 99 locations as well.”

“A few were within walking distance. That was a good reason to get out of the house. Others I visited by bicycle with my young daughter.”

“And sometimes we would drive to a neighbourhood and take a walk there,” Sandra says. “In the end, we did them all. It was very cool.”

Sexual harassment ‘the order of the day’

Sexual harassment may seem far-fetched to many Eindhoven residents, but in reality almost three-quarters of Dutch women experience it. “I don’t think people realise the extent to which gender based violence takes place in the Netherlands”, Juliana Bosch, of Feminist Wave Eindhoven, says. That is why the feminist action group is holding a protest in the city centre on Friday evening to create awareness.

According to Feminist Wave Eindhoven, gender-related violence has become normal in society. That would be the result of inequality between different genders. Women in particular would suffer from this. For example, a study by the action group shows that 13 per cent of the boys surveyed indicate that hitting their girlfriend is necessary to gain respect. “These figures come from the culture we live in. I think we should talk about what is happening in the Netherlands, many people are not aware of that”, Bosch says.

Reason for Feminist Wave Eindhoven to take action. The protest starts at 17:30 and lasts until 22:00 on March 8 at Dynamo. At the beginning there is a meeting and then a film is played showing figures regarding violence against women in the Netherlands. In the meantime, the action group is handing out flyers.

The organisation has been protesting on 18Septemberplein for the past three years. Now the protest will take place at Dynamo. “We hope to talk to many different people on Friday so that we create awareness about gender violence in the Netherlands”, Juliana said.

Winners of Eindhoven Culture Prize presented

Het Stroomhuis, Ballroom Functions and Café Wilhelmina are the winners of the Eindhoven Culture Prize. The prizes were presented in the Effenaar on Wednesday evening.

Cultuurpodium Stroomhuis won the appreciation prize, Eindhoven Ballroom Functions received the incentive prize and Café Wilhelmina received the audience award.

Stroomhuis (Stream house)

The Stroomhuis on Fellenoord is a music venue that also functions as a breeding ground for makers. The place is used for various activities, as a meeting place and sanctuary for new music. The jury praises the authenticity and autonomy of the Stroomhuis.

Ballroom Functions

Ballroom is still a relatively new and underexposed art form in the Netherlands. This takes place every second Wednesday of the month in the Dynamo youth center. The ballroom scene is an originally African and Latin American LGBTQ+ scene in which competitions are held in art forms such as dance, drag and catwalk. The jury is full of praise for the commitment and ambition of the young initiative.

Café Wilhelmina

In addition to being a pub, Café Wilhelmina is also an independent stage and meeting place where many events are organized. The café has been a household name in Eindhoven for years in the blues and rock scene. Café Wilhelmina also offers a rehearsal space for choirs.

Money amount

The winners received an award and cash worth 7,500 euros. The culture prize is awarded every year to an artist or institution that has delivered an achievement in the field of culture that is of exceptional added value to the city.
