Book market proceeds for extracurricular activities for underprivileged children

This Saturday book lovers can indulge themselves at the Parklaan in Eindhoven, where a “French-themed” book market will take place. The proceeds of the market are intended to be given to the Leergeld Eindhoven foundation. This organisation ensures that children from poor families can participate in extracurricular activities.

Participation in such activities is very important for self-esteem, according to organizer Academisch Genootschap Eindhoven. Moreover, it helps improve the knowledge and skills of the participating children.

Book Fair

Various types of books are sold in the book market, such as fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks, historical and philosophical works. All kinds of activities with a French theme will take place around the market as well.

In addition to the book market, there is a jeu de boules court, harpist Jopie Jonkers will play French songs and Alliance Française will present information about France and the French language. Cycling enthusiasts will also be able to watch the Tour de France on a large screen.

The book market starts at 2:00 PM on Parklaan 93 in Eindhoven.

Avoid the City Center tonight

0

The Eindhoven Municipality has called on motorists to avoid the town as much as possible tonight (Wednesday).

They are expecting heavy traffic in the city centre. Because of Dutch Design Week (DDW), it has been much busier in the city. The Champions League PSV-Tottenham Hotspur duel will make it even more hectic. This game starts just before 19:00. It is also evening rush hour around this time. The Municipality advises truck and car drivers to take alternate routes when possible.

Supporter areas
Special areas have been designated for PSV and Tottenham Hotspur fans. The Markt and Jan van Lieshoutstraat are to be used by Spurs supporters. Stratumseind, Stationsplein, and Dommelstraat have been appointed to the PSV fans. Portable bathrooms, among other things, have been placed on the Markt. During the afternoon and evening, there is a complete glass and can ban in the city centre.

During the football game, there will be no city buses on PSV-laan. They will drive via Boschdijk. It was agreed with the DDW organisers that the DDW taxis would avoid the area around the stadium before, during, and after the game as much as possible.

At Fontys Sporthogeschool (Fontys Sports College) on Anton Coolenlaan, there is a free P & R. Here you can park between 12.00 and 16.00 and then take the free bus to the city centre.

Neighbourhood association voted for social award

Neighbourhood association Gehurterbij (you belong with us) finished fifth in the public vote for the ‘Appeltje van Oranje’ award (apple of Oranje). The volunteer club from Son en Breugel brings together neighbourhood residents and the residents of SWZ Zonhove, an institution for people with severe multiple disabilities.

However, the competition is not over yet. Next Saturday an online ‘pitch round’ will follow, in which the contenders will present their project. After this it will be clear which ten nominees have reached the final round and are therefore competing for an Appeltje van Oranje*.

These are awarded every year by the Oranje Fonds (Oranje fund). Eligible are social projects that successfully connect different groups of people and ensure that they participate in society again. The theme for 2023 is ‘Bruggenbouwers in de buurt’ (‘bridge builders in the neighbourhood’).

The winner will receive a sum of €25,000 and a bronze statuette made by Princess Beatrix. The award is presented each year by the patroness of the Oranje Fonds, Queen Máxima. In anniversary years, King Willem-Alexander presents the award.

Participating in society

The Son neighbourhood association Gehurterbij actively involves Zonhove residents in the neighbourhood and organises joint activities, such as the Easter brunch, village quiz, neighbourhood lunch, Christmas parade and the garage sale. This gives them a chance to participate in society in an ordinary way.

For many this is special, but for Gehurterbij it is natural, chairman Jos Hölscher said. “We do it mainly because we enjoy it ourselves and the connection in the neighbourhood with both neighbours and residents of Zonhove feels good”.

Winter market to bridge gap between internationals and locals

0

Brazilian snacks and prayer cards from Bulgaria. For a while, the Muziekgebouw seemed like a miniature world during the ‘Cultural & Creative Wintermarket’. Not very surprising, since people from all corners of the world come to Brainport to work. This internationalisation is not always easy for both old and new Eindhoven residents. “I would really like to have more contact with local people,” he says.

Socialising together

In the Muziekgebouw on Saturday, it was a to-ing and fro-ing of all kinds of nationalities. Brazilians, Colombians, Bulgarians, and Indians. They left home and hearth to live in a foreign country. “It was scary at first because I didn’t know what to expect,” says a female visitor.

Added to this, they often do not speak the language and there are cultural differences between the new and old Eindhoven residents. That gap needs to be bridged with events like the winter market. “It gives people a chance to show their culture, discover similarities and start discussions with each other,” explains a male visitor the added value.

And that is important according to one of the Dutch guests, dressed in a PSV Christmas jumper. “We live together on this earth, so we have to live together. Moreover, we can learn a lot from each other.”

Kombucha

Of course, there was also a less serious tone. So there was the chance to roll up your own sleeves or watch or taste something from one of the many stalls. “I just made Kombucha at a workshop,” said one of the visitors. “That’s a non-alcoholic drink, very healthy. What you actually do is reuse old Kombucha by adding new tea and water.”

That tastes like more, as there will be another event for internationals at LAB-1 in January.

Second edition Festival Smitske announced

0

Dance festival Smitske has announced a second edition. The first one was held earlier this year, when the Eindhoven DJ La Fuente performed, among others.

The idea comes from comedian Gerrie Smits, who actually organised the festival last year as a joke to give his performance some publicity. The festival, which at the time was limited to 750 people, was a success and will now be continued.

The first edition was held at Evoluon, but the organisers have now booked another location. On 25 June 2022, the E3 Strand (beach) in Eersel will be the setting for the second edition. Names that have already been booked are dj Quintino, Jay Hardway and Retrovision.
