Police station in rainbow colours

The nondescript police station on Mathildelaan in Eindhoven was an eye-catcher for a moment on Tuesday night. The building was lit up in rainbow colours. With this the police wanted to make a statement during Coming Out Day.

During that day, sexual diversity and coming out for your orientation is discussed. Numerous organisations and people show their support for the LGBTI community.

Out of the closet
Many police officers find it difficult to come out to their colleagues. Within the police there are therefore initiatives to change this. Not only in Eindhoven was the police station lit up in rainbow colours. The same happened with the Den Bosch and Helmond offices. Furthermore, the rainbow flag was raised at the locations.

Calling all ‘green fingers’ to the Groenexpo Bloem & Tuin

People with green fingers can indulge themselves at the Gulbergen estate in Nuenen until the end of the week. The ‘Groenexpo Bloem & Tuin’ will be held there for the 28th time. There are about 80 stalls scattered around the site with colourful flowers, mermaids and other garden accessories.

A visitor says : “I get my ideas here, but I just buy in the store. Saves a lot of lugging.” Better put on your walking shoes if you want to see all the latest gardening gadgets. If you want to see all the stalls, you have to walk almost two kilometers. “It really is a day out for people,” says co-organiser Arvid Schellens. “Visitors come from far and wide to visit the market. Mainly people from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, but also from other countries.”

Competition with Keukenhof?

Will tourists from now on be eager to see this expo instead of Keukenhof? “Well, I’ve never been to Keukenhof, but it’s true that a lot of people come here – young and old,” said the co-organiser.

The Groenexpo Tuin & Bloem can be visited until Sunday. The organization expects to welcome about 40,000 visitors

More visitors to Prehistoric Village

0

The Prehistorisch Dorp (Prehistoric Village) in Eindhoven has seen the number of visitors rise slightly this year. This year, almost 56,000 people visited the village. Last year there were 54,500 visitors.

According to the cultural-historical open-air museum, the international Viking festival, the food festival, and the knight battles weekend were the crowd-pleasers. More people visit during school holidays too.

Director, Ward Rennen, also thinks the renovation of the museum plays an important role. “We had some bad luck this year, with a lot of rainy days during the autumn holidays. Despite this setback, we were able to attract more visitors with new events”.

Expansion plans

The Eindhoven Museum, and in particular the Prehistorisch Dorp, wants to expand considerably in the future. The park will then be called Vonk (Spark). From 2024 onwards, some 130,000 visitors are expected to come to the park. The museum park is now about four football pitches in size. It will soon be the size of six to eight of these.

The Prehistorisch Dorp is currently closed to visitors. This open-air museum will open its doors in March again.

Workshops on Artificial Intelligence in Eindhoven library

Everyone has to deal with Artificial Intelligence, but not everyone is aware of it. That’s why the library in Eindhoven is organising the AI Parade. During the whole month of May you can learn all about this smart technology and how it affects our daily lives. Monday was the first workshop.

“We are training our computer”, one of the participants said. The participants are working on machine learning, which allows the computer to learn things on its own. With pieces of fruit, they are training the computer. “We took hundreds of pictures of an apple. This allows the computer to recognise the apple”, another participant says.

In everyday life, everyone deals with AI (artificial intelligence, ed.), but for many people it is still unknown. That’s why the AI Parade is coming to the library in Eindhoven. With various workshops and lectures they will discuss Artificial Intelligence.

Learning
“Besides machine learning, the participants were also given an explanation of what AI is”, workshop instructor Randi Nuij says. The participants found the workshop instructive. “A computer has to know a lot before it can really do anything”, one participant said. “It doesn’t always get it right either. The computer thinks I am a background and it also sometimes thinks an apple is an orange”, another participant adds.

Fresh algorithm generator
A mini-expo will also be on display during the AI Parade. Until 16 May, the Fresh Algorithms generator is on display in the library. Based on five questions, the machine creates a recipe for a meal of your liking. And that can be anything from world cuisine to something easy to Dutch food.

The AI Parade in the Eindhoven library lasts until 31 May.

Noche de Tuna Ciudad de Luz 2023

The yearly Tuna festival brings a spoonfull of Spain to the Netherlands. An event full of Spanish student music that has become a true tradition over the past decades. The city of lights (Eindhoven) was the first in the Netherlands where a so-called ‘tuna’ was established.

In 1964, a group of Eindhoven students were travelling to Spain for holidays when they came across the centuries-old Spanish ‘tunas’, a tradition that originated in the Middle Ages among students who travelled the country from teacher to teacher, making music in exchange for food, drink and a place to sleep. They played alone, but soon also in groups.

Join the celebration on Friday evening for the music at the Pasa Bares, a musical pub crawl through the city center of Eindhoven, and on Saturday afternoon for the stage performances at the Wim van Doorne Music Kiosk.

The festival is free to attend and suitable for all ages.

You can vote for the best group at the Van Doorne kiosk.

Festive entertainment at your door

0

The Eindhoven Arts Centre (CKE) and the Parktheater have joined hands with neighbourhood organisations.

Together, they’re bringing art and culture right to the doorstep of residents in various parts of the city. There will be parades with live music and theatre and dance performances. These will be travelling through the streets of Eindhoven from today onwards.

Every evening, under the name Warme Winter Stoet (Warm Winter Parade), a different neighbourhood will be surprised by these performances. The will continue until right before Christmas. The last one will be on Wednesday, 23 December.

Supporting local organisations

The idea was born from all the upcoming public holidays. Because of the anti-corona measures, gatherings with loved ones are out of the question. The CKE and Parktheater,  therefore, decided to support the various neighbourhood organisations.

“This year’s holidays are going to be weird. So, there are no big family Christmas gatherings. No o dancing in the new year. No friendly neighbourhood activities. That’s why we want to bring a little warmth and light to the neighbourhoods in a different way,” Wikke Peters and Marjon Reus, of CKE and Parktheater, say.

“In the dark days before Christmas, we’ve organised all kinds of great activities. These are on the initiative of the neighbourhood organisations. All, of course, corona-proof.”

Dual purpose

“These activities have a dual purpose. Not only are we bringing warmth to people’s doorsteps. We’re also allowing dozens of artists to make a meaningful contribution to the city at a time when the culture sector is struggling,” Peters and Reus conclude.

These activities are made financially possible by Woonbedrijf.

Thousands of students in Eindhoven for introduction week

Singing songs, playing games and of course lots of partying. The introduction week started again in Eindhoven on Monday. Thousands of Fontys and TU/e students are participating. “I’m especially looking forward to getting to know my fellow students”, a young man said.

It is still quiet on Monday morning at the Fontys campsite. The future students are still seeing which way the cat jumps. Coloured shirts walk back and forth between the tents. Some youngsters are still busy inflating their air beds. It’s up to the so called “moms and dads” (focal points consisting of students) to bring in the party atmosphere.

“They’ve only just gotten to know each other, of course”, an attendant explains. “And of course it doesn’t help either that drinking is only allowed from 16:00”.

Still, even without alcohol, the students slowly begin to loosen up. Several songs are sung by the counselors about Julia’s breasts and a duckling. Meanwhile, the students are hooking up. “I thought they did well for a first day”, Joris reflects.

TU/e

A quiet start is also made on the TU/e grounds. The students play games together. For example, the mechanical engineers of the future have to make something out of duct tape. However, the introduction week is not only about games and partying.

It is also a chance to get to know the program and fellow students. “For me, it is successful when they have seen that being a student will be one of the highlights of their lives”.
