Brabant Day called off again

This year’s edition of Brabant Day is cancelled. Whilst the Dutch government plan to relax the current coronavirus measures further in May, the event’s organisers say there is too much uncertainty around this. Last year’s edition of Brabant Day, which fell during the first wave of the coronavirus, was also cancelled.

Brabant Day is an annual parade celebrating the history and culture of Brabant, held in Heeze.

‘With pain in our hearts, we must cancel the 63rd edition of Brabant Day,’ the organisers write. The decision was reached after much deliberation with local councillors and volunteers.

More events and social activities are expected to be possible by the end of August, but uncertainties remain. Many weeks of preparation go into the parade. For example, mechanics begin building the special parade wagons in June. Whether the building process can be done in a safe, corona-proof way remains under discussion.

Effenaar launches music platform for 50th anniversary

0

Poppodium Effenaar has launched a platform in honor of its fiftieth birthday. Musical tips, news, and other interesting facts will be presented weekly.

The anniversary passed by quietly due to corona. With the launch of Effenaar50.nl, it can finally be celebrated.

“Now that we are slowly moving in the right direction after a long period of being open and closed, we would like to offer something special to everyone who cares about music”, says director Jos Feijen. “We also want to strengthen our position as the pop venue of the future, by offering depth and developing our vision for the future in the field of music experience.”

Effenaar50.nl will become a digital meeting place for everything that has to do with music, artists, audience, and the Effenaar.

“Our audience and sector longs for connection with each other and with their favorite artists. We hope to bring bright light at the end of the tunnel with the platform,” says Jos Feijen.

Eight Veldhoven citizens were surprised with Royal honours on Tuesday morning. They received an unexpected visit from Mayor Marcel Delhez and the brass band, and were immediately pinned on a ribbon.

De Parade gets ready for its first ‘real’ edition in Eindhoven

The first two editions of De Parade in Eindhoven required a lot of experimentation and improvisation due to the Covid regulations. That worked out quite well, but the theatre festival is happy that this year, the festival can take place as it was intended.

In 2020, De Parade came to Eindhoven in an alternative form, namely with a caravan of theatre performances. The following year, it remained unclear for a long time whether the festival could go ahead at all. It could eventually, but the QR codes and keeping a distance created a different atmosphere than the organisers are used to.

“But it was great that we could do something at all”, spokesperson Nadine van Pinxteren says. “Also with an eye to the future. Those two improvised versions were also important with a view to the future. They ensured that we stayed on people’s minds”.

‘First real edition’
And that has worked, because ticket sales are going well, says Van Pinxteren. “We are aiming for 750 to 1,000 visitors on the weekend days. But it is the first real edition, so it is difficult to estimate exactly what to expect”.

Growth
The Eindhoven edition is not the largest edition of the festival, but it is nevertheless a full-fledged event, Van Pinxteren says. “Not all versions are equally large. In The Hague, too, it is a bit smaller in scale. But we are growing. In Eindhoven, we now have five theatre tents and two restaurants. In addition, there is the children’s parade for the little ones. There really is something for everyone”.

There is therefore plenty to see, Van Pinxteren informs us. “I am looking forward to Grindtegeltuin (gravel tile garden) by the Eindhoven hiphop duo Frino. They call it ‘brabohop’ themselves. It’s really about the people in the city”.

Costumes and wigs
In addition, Zuidelijk Toneel, (southern theatre), which also took the stage at the festival last year, will present a special performance. “They will be performing a play by Austrian playwright Johann Nestroy. Last year, they performed another of his plays and it was well received. This piece is more about love than last year’s. It is a mini-operetta with accompanying costumes and wigs. It will be very beautiful”, Van Pinxteren says enthusiastically.

It promises to be a beautiful weekend. “The weather seems to be cooperating well and we can see through our social media that the festival is alive. I can’t wait to get started myself. Last week we started building up the festival, and it’s going to look really nice”.

Festival plus a ‘new course’ to mark Muziekgebouw’s 30th

In September, it will be the thirtieth anniversary of the Muziekgebouw. In honor of the jubilee, the theater is organizing a festival while also embarking on a ‘new course’

With this new course, the theater wants to reach a wider audience. A right step in the direction to solve its budget constraints.

“We have embarked on a new path with the development plan,” says director Edo Righini. “To achieve this, we are broadening the programming and involving different target groups in the development of new programs and initiatives. In this way we want to reach a larger and also broader part of society.”

Balance

“At the same time, our focus is on creating a Muziekgebouw where cultural content and cultural entrepreneurship are in balance,” Reghini continues. “The first results of this new strategy give us confidence that we are well on the way.”

Kick off

The anniversary season will kick off on September 10. The Philharmonie Zuidnederland will present a broad musical program with various special guests, the Muziekgebouw said. In addition, as part of the thirtieth anniversary, various celebrities will visit the concert hall during the year.

The legendary soul bands ‘The Temptations’ and ‘The Four Tops’ will be performing at the end of October. A surprise program by Hungarian pianist András Schiff is planned in February.

Sunday Funday

The Sunday Funday festival is being kicked off a day after the 30th anniversary. The Muziekgebouw plans to give lesser-known artists a stage with this recurring event. Less well-known performances have been less well-visited since corona, Muziekgebouw director Edo Righini previously told Studio040 . Sunday Funday must put an end to that.

Children’s parade with lots of music moves through downtown

Music, dance, singing and colorful outfits. Muziekgebouw Eindhoven is holding a children’s music parade on Sunday 2 April, right through downtown.

All of Eindhoven’s music societies will walk in a big parade through the city that day. Through music, dance, song and outfits, all countries of the world will be represented. The parade is inspired by the ‘Turkse wereldkinderdag’ (National Sovereignty and Children’s Day). The organisation expects a participation of hundreds of children.

Open stage
From 18 Septemberplein, participants will walk to Muziekgebouw. There is an open stage where various associations will give performances.

Close-Act
Besides the Eindhoven musical associations, the international street theatre group Close-Act will also participate. This group creates street shows that take place in, between and above the audience. The group originated from a collaboration between actors, designers, choreographers and musicians.

A packed stadium during the penultimate Groots concert

It was one big party at the Philips Stadium again this weekend. There, Guus Meeuwis took to the stage for the penultimate time with his Groots met een zachte G concert series. The audience was treated to several guest artists and went wild as ever. During the song ‘Het is een Nacht’, Guus hardly had to sing himself: the whole stadium reverberated along.

The three concerts were almost completely sold out. The shows were playfully opened with a video message from King Willem-Alexander and Máxima, made by Lucky TV. Afterwards, almost 35,000 visitors sang along with songs like Per Spoor, Tranen Gelachen and Brabant.

For Flemming from Vughen, a dream came true. He was in the support act and got to warm up the audience. During the song ‘May I Dance’ later in the evening, he came on stage again. Together with Guus, he sang a mix of that song with his own ‘Automatic’.

There were also guest appearances by Acda and the Munnik and DJ La Fuente. When the latter entered the stage from the audience, the party really erupted. Guus also sang a song that his witnesses, including comedian Leo Alkemade and rapper Diggy Dex, sang at his wedding.

KNSB gets 50,000 from Eindhoven municipality

The municipality of Eindhoven has given 50,000 euros to the Royal Dutch Chess Federation (KNSB). The money is intended for the organisation of the Youth Olympiad Chess. That international chess tournament, involving 240 athletes from all over the world, will take place next month on the High Tech Campus.

According to the city council, there are several reasons to support the tournament financially . On the one hand, it is expected to have a positive impact on Eindhoven’s economy. After all, sixty teams will come and stay in the city. In addition, the High Tech Campus will be rented as a tournament location.

Also, the chess tournament for young people under 16 is to contribute to a ‘broad and diverse range of events’. Moreover, the organisation is taking steps to make chess more accessible to girls and women. For instance, a tournament will be held in which the eight best women under 21 will compete against two Dutch chess players.

Fifty thousand

All in all, reason enough for the city council to provide fifty thousand euros to the KNSB. That amount comes from a budget called ‘Uitvoeringsbudget Programma Sport’.

With that money and support from the chess association and the province, among others, the Youth Chess Olympiad will be organised. The tournament will take place from 11 to 20 August.
