Eindhoven celebrates and commemorates on 18 September

0

On 18 September 1944 Eindhoven was liberated from the German occupiers in the Second World War. Tonight this was commemorated with a torch relay in the city center.

The liberation fire was taken to the Town Hall Square in a large procession from the 18 Septemberplein. Veterans took part in the procession, army vehicles, various music bands and associations. With the fire, mayor Jorritsma then lit the torch at the liberation monument on Stadhuisplein. That fire will continue to burn until October 11.

At the same time, igniting the liberation fire, also signifies the start of the annual Lichtjesroute through Eindhoven. Ornaments decorated with lamps indicate the route through the city that the Allies have covered at the time of the liberation.

Chinese New Year celebrated in Eindhoven

0

Chinese New Year in Eindhoven? It was celebrated with a traditional Lions’ or Dragons’ dance. And by serving and eating lots of special dishes!

This year is called the year of the Pig or Boar. The Chinese zodiac has twelve animal-signs, which change per Chinese year.

Myths

It seems, the Jade Emperor said the order in which the zodiac cycle was to be decided, would be the order in which the invited animals would arrive at his party. According to one story, Pig was late because he overslept.

Though another myth mentions, Wolf destroyed the Boar’s home. So Pig or Boar, had to rebuild his home first. Only then did he set off for the Emperor’s party. Of course, he arrived last and had to be content with twelfth place in the cycle.

Traditions

Regardless: Saturday, Chinese New Year was enthusiastically welcomed in Eindhoven. The centre of festivities was at the Eindhoven shop of Asian supermarket chain “Amazing Oriental”, at Langdonkenstraat 7. Events, free tasting sessions and Asian cooking shows are regularly organized at the shops of this chain.

The traditional Lions’ or Dragons’ dance is often accompanied by lighting fire-crackers. The dances are performed through streets and in front of shops, to chase away evil spirits and bless the area. Moreover, small red bags or envelopes containing money are also distributed.

According to one of the visitors watching the spectacle: “It’s nice to see how other cultures celebrate and welcome a New Year!”.

Thousands of Chinese call Eindhoven their home and celebrated their New Year in style. The growing high-tech sector ensures many people from Asian countries now live in the city. They share their traditions, celebrations, festivals with everybody else in Eindhoven.

Born in the year of the Boar or Pig and being teased about “oversleeping”? Remind your friends: in Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth and good fortune. Provided you believe in astrology, of course.

TV chef introduces students to vegetarian cuisine

He is usually in front of TV cameras, but  on Tuesday he was at a school in Eindhoven. 24Kitchen Chef Mounir Toub gave a cooking course at Summa Plus. He introduced students to vegetarian cuisine. The lesson was organised in the context of the Nationale Week Zonder Vlees en Zuivel (national week without meat and dairy).

“We want to make students aware of the fact that you can make your own choices about what you eat and that those choices can have an impact on the world around you”, Mirjam van der Woude, teacher at Summa Plus, says. “In addition, food without meat can also be very tasty”.
That is why various activities are organised for a week to get students thinking about the use of meat in their diet. For example, cooking lessons are given every day, meals are cooked for the elderly from the neighbourhood and vegetarian spring rolls are handed out during the break. “Everything related to food this week is all vegetarian”, the teacher explains.

Environmental pollution

And not without reason. The National no meat or dairy week is organised to combat environmental pollution. The foundation wants people to avoid meat and dairy for a week, so that there is much less CO2 emission and it becomes easier to achieve the climate goals. The campaign started in 2018 as The National Week without meat. The non-dairy part was added this year.

Growing Food

The Summa students are also introduced to food production. They learn how vegetables and herbs grow and when to harvest for example. Also their use in the kitchen is explained.

Dutch Technology Week goes online

As the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining. Though we struggle to get through the chaos, thanks to the pandemic, we do get access to many events that have turned online… one of which is the upcoming Dutch Technology Week, from June 8-13.

Yes, you have the time to plan ahead, and they advertise “parking is not necessary, you watch, listen and participate online ”.This event is proudly sponsored by globally acclaimed technology giants and regional companies on their way towards making their global presence. Pitching together with pride and enthusiasm and creating awareness with the “wow factor” together they vouch for the success of online DTW.

DTW online starts with a video of Frits van Hout looking out at the panoramic view of the region from his office in the ASML tower. Pensively, he reflects and eschews gratefully the local innovative contributions.

The pandemic prompted huge adaptations worldwide in all sectors. At Eindhoven, DTW has also lived up to expectations and has gone completely online.  Though such a decision came as late as in March, yet the organisers adapted well enough to suit the times. Indeed, it is a huge challenge. And in doing so they have perhaps initiated the new norm, that is, more events online in the future, enhanced with Augmented Technology.

It’s OUR technology, do take a look, there is too much to write about .. are you in?

Eindhoven – the new hub for the Indian startups

Diplomatic relations between India and the Netherlands was established in 1947 and has been cordial and friendly ever since. In the more recent past, trade and investment have become the dominant themes in their bilateral ties. Today, the Netherlands is a significant trade and investment partner of India.

This partnership got a tremendous boost as the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, paid a state visit to India on 24 and 25 May. This visit sought to maximise the potential of the economic and commercial partnership between the two countries. It was a high-level business delegation comprising of four cabinet ministers, 125 companies representatives, and about 220 business participants that focused on strengthening the relations in agriculture, smart cities, healthcare, water management, and Research and Technology.

Lars de Vries, Senior Project Manager, India (BOM Foreign Investments), which is based in Eindhoven,  joined Prime Minister Rutte on his visit to India for the largest Trade mission ever. His company recognises Eindhoven as a hub for Indian companies. We believe in cooperation and our region has a strong connection with India. With the city of Eindhoven being the hometown of Philips, which has also been present in India for the past 100 years, many IT companies have found their business relations with the front-runners in co-creation,’ he explains.

Eindhoven, as we know, is home to over 140 companies and institutions, comprising over 10.000 product developers, researchers, and entrepreneurs and an estimated 85 nationalities. Global companies in the Brainport region like NXP and TOMTOM have a long-standing and committed histories with India. Eindhoven, which is rated as the smartest region in the world, focusses on high tech, mobility, and design. “A few examples of companies from Brabant that joined this mission are Litevax, Eindhoven Medical Robotics, NXP, PAL-V, Schouten Europe, and MTD. Many relevant people from the Indo-Dutch network joined this mission, such as the NICCT, Assocham, as well as my acquisition colleagues from Rotterdam Partners, The Hague Business, and Amsterdam in Business,’ adds Mr De Vries.

He also mentions that the Dutch business environment is conductive for start-ups. “The Eindhoven company, Eindhoven Medical Robotics, is a great example of this. It provides advanced knowledge and technologies, assisting surgeons to do the impossible with their RoboSculpt, which has the ability to navigate autonomously during high precision bone surgery. A very promising technology start-up, which intends to ramp up to a 1.000+ people team, utilising the collaborative R&D network between the Netherlands and India, using the scale of the market that India offers.”

Anupam Nayak and Jordan Bos from Eindhoven Medical Robotics were also invited by RVO to join the Dutch trade mission to India. Together with their team, they have an ambitious plan to make EM Robotics a world leader in high precision surgical robots. They have a partnership agreement with TU/e. “Igniting young minds of surgeons by training them with the latest in technology and giving them an opportunity to join us back here in Eindhoven, also opens up diverse avenues for future educational and business collaborations,” Anupam explains. Anupam is the COO of Eindhoven Medical Robotics and founded the company along with Prof. Maarten Steinbuch. “Currently, all engineering and manufacturing are located in Eindhoven with pre-clinical tests and human trials being set up worldwide,” she informs us with enthusiasm. She earnestly believes that, “The power of joining forces with the Dutch initiatives in India will surely enable us to expand our presence in the fastest growing healthcare markets of the world.”

More and more Dutch people are choosing to start a business in emerging markets such as India. They do this not only because there are many economic opportunities there, but also because this is stimulated by the government.

Indian startups have registered notable growth in sectors like Fintech, logistics, medical science, and e-commerce. “Out of the 200 Indian companies in the Netherlands, our small region hosts almost 30 companies from India including the large corporates like Wipro, Infosys BPO, Cognizant, Tata Steel Tubes, RF Solutions, Banco Products, and many other small and innovative firms like Forthcode, and Intech DMLS which are now expanding to Eindhoven,’ explains Mr de Vries. “During this Trade mission, I focused on meeting as many Indian companies with a presence in Brabant, who have current projects and new companies that might be interested in establishing in our region. We wanted to make sure that we became recognised as a hub for Indian companies. ”

Alternative Brabantsedag cancelled too

The alternative celebration of Brabantsedag will be cancelled after all due to new restrictions, the organisers announced.

There was certainly joy when it was announced last week that there would be an alternative event. No traditional Brabantsedag in Heeze. The groups involved would open theatre kitchens where visitors could have a bite to eat and be served theatrically.

Now, a week later, little is left of that optimism. Due to too early, too broad measure relaxations, the number of COVID-19 cases has exploded. That means that the alternative Brabantsedag is also cancelled for the time being.

It was a go

“The government had promised a great summer. And anti-COVID-19 measure relaxations were far-reaching. That meant all lights were on green for this alternative to the theatre parade,” says a Foundation spokesperson.

“Until Friday. There’s uncertainty and preparations to be done. So, the Brabantsedag Foundation has decided not to organise the event in the way it was announced.” There is, however, a glimmer of hope.

“The concept has been received enthusiastically. And it’s too good not to be executed at another time. We’re still considering a suitable moment in the future,” the representative says.

That’s why the foundation hopes measures will be relaxed in mid-August. If that’s the case, the organisation will attempt to hold the event after all.

Jewish festival of lights celebrated amid great interest

The Jewish festival of lights Hanukkah was celebrated in Eindhoven’s Stadhuisplein on Sunday evening. Never before were so many interested parties present. An important reason for this turnout is the war raging in the Middle East.

In total, around 300 people attended the celebration. Besides the Rabbi of Eindhoven and people from the local Jewish community, Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem and councillors also attended the ceremony.

Notable guests

Notable guests were the local representatives of the Catholic Church and Islam: dean René Wilmink and imam Mehmet Nurullah Canatan of the Eindhoven Mevlana mosque. By coming, they wanted to show that different believers or dissenters can stand side by side rather than against each other, in times of war, tension and division.

Connection

“We don’t want to import the war in the Middle East to Eindhoven. We are looking for connection here,” responded Max Loewenstein of the city’s Jewish community. “The tensions are palpable now that there is war, but in Eindhoven the different communities continue to talk to each other,” Dijsselbloem said.

The celebration included speeches and klezmer music. Candles were also lit on a large seven-arm candelabra.

Because of the global tensions surrounding the conflict between Israel and Hamas, there was extra security at the gathering in City Hall Square.

King Willem-Alexander to drive historic royal DAF car during Eindhoven visit

0

There is only one of DAF’s so-called Kini cars in existence. DAF engineers built the small, roofless car with no doors in 1967 as a gift to Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus to celebrate Willem-Alexander’s birth. After being on display at the DAF Museum for several years, Willem-Alexander will drive it again during his King’s Day visit to Eindhoven on Tuesday.

The car’s unique design was intended to allow the royals to enjoy warm weather journeys. Photographers captured a young Willem-Alexander sitting on his mother’s lap as his father drove it.

Part of the King’s visit to Eindhoven includes watching a parade of cars that have been designed and made in the Eindhoven region. One of those cars is the Kini. ‘Willem-Alexander himself already indicated that he’s looking forward to driving the Kini on Tuesday,’ says Geert Vermeer, the DAF Museum’s chairman.

‘Special’

‘It took a lot of effort to get the car ready,’ Vermeer explains. ‘The car was on the first floor, right at the back of the museum. The entire museum had to be rearranged to get it out, but it worked in the end.’

The blue car has the King’s name etched onto it. Vermeer says, ‘it’s special to let the King drive the car again. It’s an honour.’
