Easter bunny hunt for people with little money

Adults looking for Easter bunnies in the garden of Petruskerk (Petrus church) in Eindhoven. It was a remarkable sight on Saturday afternoon, but it really happened.

It was something new that Hugo van Rooij from Stichting (Z)onderdak ((with(out) roof foundation) had come up with to give people with little money a happy Easter. Everyone was allowed to hand in one Easter bunny they found and it had a number on it. That number could be exchanged for a prize.

“I had gigantic Easter bunnies as a prize, but also money”, De Rooij said. “The main prize was even €50”. He was not afraid that people would attack each other for such cash prizes. He was right, every participant was happy with his or her gift.

Like a child

The thirty to forty participants meet every Saturday afternoon in Petruskerk. They then get soup and sandwiches. This time De Rooij had come up with something extra to get these people in the Easter mood: looking for Easter bunnies.

Participant Hans with his reddish curls felt like a child again when he searched the ground for hidden Easter bunnies. “This is so much fun, a bit of treasure hunting. It’s great that this is being organised”.

After handing in, his find turned out to be worth a gigantic chocolate Easter bunny. “Great! Then I won’t arrive empty-handed tomorrow at my three adult sons”, he beamed. “I’ll give this Easter Bunny three minutes and it’ll be gone tomorrow”.

Benefactor

70-year-old Joke was also very happy when she came to hand in her found Easter bunny. “I’m so curious to see what I won”. She impatiently unpacked her envelope with the prize she had won and could hardly believe it. The envelope contained €50.

“I’m going to give them to the homeless. I’m going to buy socks and underpants and I’m going to buy cups of coffee for them”. She said she doesn’t need the money. “Making other people happy makes me happy. They need it more than I do”.

Meanwhile, Danio unpacked his winning envelope. “€20, wow, that’s what I’m going to eat from today and tomorrow. I don’t have that much money so I’m very happy with this”.

Overjoyed

In the meantime, Eindhoven benefactor Hugo de Rooij looks back with satisfaction. “This makes me so happy. Let’s face it, these people deserve to have a happy Easter. And I never worried for a moment that it would get out of hand, because there is money to be won. Someone just said that he was overjoyed with his huge chocolate Easter egg, because money is just money”.

Kempenerpop revived with punk rock band Pussy Riot

Dressed in colourful balaclavas and anti-Putin slogans: that’s the feminist and anti-capitalist band Pussy Riot. The band will soon be at festival Kempenerpop in Waalre. A striking headline act…

Socially provocative themes predominate in Pussy Riot’s repertoire. The performance at  Kempener pop festival, which is going to be organised again for the first time since 2019, also tells a story of the band’s protest actions. Precisely the political message, which will be conveyed at Pussy Riot’s performance, is a conscious choice of the event’s organisers. In fact, Pussy Riot’s ideas perfectly match those of the organisation of Kempener Pop, according to festival manager Frank Ploegmakers. “Like the band, we are for inclusiveness and against discrimination: everyone is allowed to be there”.

Conviction

Members of the band became world news in 2012 when they climbed the altar of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior. There they used a so-called “punk prayer” to criticize religious believers and the then re-election of President Putin. Two members were sentenced by Russian authorities to two years of punishment camp. Just before the 2014 Winter Olympics, held in Sochi, Russia, the duo was granted amnesty. With that, their sentence expired.

Singer Maria Alyokhina, one of the two prisoners, has since been detained many times for criticizing President Putin. The last time she was detained was in February 2022, after which she was placed under police surveillance and not allowed to leave her home. But after the outbreak of war with Ukraine, she managed to escape: she cut her ankle bracelet and pretended to be a meal delivery boy.

Risk

The Municipality of Waalre has a standard consultation with the police for this event, but there are no plans for additional security measures. Even Russia expert Michel Krielaars, also a journalist for NRC, sees no harm in the performance. Warning people against Putin’s regime can do no harm, he believes. “You should know, at some point in the Netherlands everyone is drinking a beer or smoking a joint at a pop concert. And we forget that at an hour and a half flight from Amsterdam an incredibly big war is raging in which dozens of people per day are dying”.

The Kempenerpop festival is free to attend on 22, 23 and 24 September. On the first day, Friday that is, Pussy Riot will perform.

First-ever Indian consular camp in Eindhoven

The growing Indian population in the Eindhoven region is evident by the measures the Indian Embassy takes to address the community’s needs. The Indian Embassy and VFS Global, together with a few Indian organisations, conducted the first-ever consular camp in Eindhoven on Saturday, 21 January.

Brainport region residents have to travel to the Hague or Amsterdam for all Indian consular services. This easily costs a working day and many Euros. This holds the same for those who need an Indian visa. For young families, it also meant the children had to miss school. Bearing all these inconveniences in mind, the embassy and various Indian groups came together to pioneer a consular camp (Indian embassy @your doorstep) in Eindhoven.

Consular camp

The maiden consular camp was inaugurated by counsellor Shubra Pandey, while ACO Manesh Magar oversaw the camp operations. The VFS Global team led by Soumava Ghosh processed the formalities for 175 people in five hours. This is commendable, given the fact the team not only must adapt to the new work environment but also set it up in a short time frame. Honourable Indian Ambassador Reenat Sandhu appreciated the organisers, VFS and consular officers on the initiative. Indian restaurant Lekker India offered to host the camp as a goodwill gesture.

The Indian organisations that came together to initiate, organise and execute this consular camp are APNRTS Europe, Vasudhaiva kutumbakam, Eyal Eindhoven (Tamil association), TANE (Telugu association), Eindhoven Marathi Mitramandal, Shrigandha (Kannada association), Bonghoven (Bengali association) and Sanskriti & Sanskar.

Samir Toub

Samir Toub, Alderman for Diversity and inclusion, visited the camp as a special guest of honour. Toub shook hands with the Indian embassy dignitaries and the representatives of the local Indian organisations and patiently heard their needs and requests to enable better cooperation in future. Toub also highlighted the valuable contribution of the Indian expats to the region’s growth.

Consular camp in Eindhoven

The 175 attendees who availed of the services showered praise on the initiative. Mohammed pointed out that ” I had to go back home to fetch some documents, which would have been impossible if I availed the service in the Hague or Amsterdam”. Another applicant, Dutt, remarked, ” the staff were very friendly, and the process was ultra-fast.”

“It warms my heart to see newborns and their families ease through the passport application process”, gushes Karthik Yellapragada, the initiator of this camp.  All most all the applicants and many others from the Indian community favour a monthly camp in Eindhoven.

Royal Award for DELA CEO Edzo Doeve

Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem presented a royal honour to Edzo Doeve, general director of Coöperatie DELA. At his farewell on Saturday, he was appointed Knight of the Order of Orange Nassau.

Doeve is resigning from his position due to his retirement. According to Dijsselbloem, Doeve has ‘redefined the social significance of funerals and funeral services within society’. This includes his focus on the lives of bereaved families who experience a profound event.

The functional funeral organisation has been transformed into a ‘colourful cooperative’, providing space for the grieving process in the event of loss .At the same time it is focusing on living (on). ‘Control of the funeral ceremony has increasingly fallen into the hands of the bereaved. This has contributed to a more personalised interpretation of the funeral’.

Enthusiasm

This is partly a credit to Doeve, who has a keen eye for the ‘gems of the city and the province’. Two examples are the Klooster Mariënhage/Paterskerk redevelopment and the Brabantse Dag in Heeze. He sees the potential and knows how to get even more out of a concept using his vision, network and enthusiasm.

Doeve has used his extensive experience at various organisations. He collaborated with Ormit Talent, Stichting Eindhoven Marketing and Impact040 to address and solve social issues concerning poverty, participation and polarisation.

Winter market to bridge gap between internationals and locals

0

Brazilian snacks and prayer cards from Bulgaria. For a while, the Muziekgebouw seemed like a miniature world during the ‘Cultural & Creative Wintermarket’. Not very surprising, since people from all corners of the world come to Brainport to work. This internationalisation is not always easy for both old and new Eindhoven residents. “I would really like to have more contact with local people,” he says.

Socialising together

In the Muziekgebouw on Saturday, it was a to-ing and fro-ing of all kinds of nationalities. Brazilians, Colombians, Bulgarians, and Indians. They left home and hearth to live in a foreign country. “It was scary at first because I didn’t know what to expect,” says a female visitor.

Added to this, they often do not speak the language and there are cultural differences between the new and old Eindhoven residents. That gap needs to be bridged with events like the winter market. “It gives people a chance to show their culture, discover similarities and start discussions with each other,” explains a male visitor the added value.

And that is important according to one of the Dutch guests, dressed in a PSV Christmas jumper. “We live together on this earth, so we have to live together. Moreover, we can learn a lot from each other.”

Kombucha

Of course, there was also a less serious tone. So there was the chance to roll up your own sleeves or watch or taste something from one of the many stalls. “I just made Kombucha at a workshop,” said one of the visitors. “That’s a non-alcoholic drink, very healthy. What you actually do is reuse old Kombucha by adding new tea and water.”

That tastes like more, as there will be another event for internationals at LAB-1 in January.

Eindhoven’s Polish community to protest against anti-abortion legislation

Members of Eindhoven’s Polish community have announced plans to hold a protest at Stadhuisplein on Sunday. The group wants to draw attention to recent changes in abortion legislation in Poland.

Poland recently introduced laws which make abortion illegal in almost all circumstances, excluding when a person becomes pregnant as a result of rape or incest.

The plans were announced via a Facebook event, titled ‘Peaceful protest: Solidarity with women in Poland’. Written in both English and Polish, the organisers state that ‘the sentence on women has been passed, but we will not give up and [we] will fight this decision. We cannot force women to make their whole lives one big nightmare’. ‘Let’s show solidarity and support women in Poland… women who cannot decide for themselves because the government has done this for them,’ they continue.

A similar protest was held in Amsterdam last week. So far, almost 200 people have confirmed their attendance via Facebook.

The protest will take place on Sunday, 8 November at 15:00. Organisers urge participants to follow coronavirus regulations by keeping 1.5 metres distance and wearing a mask.

Best riders in the world present at the Karpendonkse Plas

The best riders in the world will return to the Karpendonkse Plas in Eindhoven from May 9 to 12 to participate in CSI Eindhoven, the city’s largest horse event.

During the Ascension weekend, around a hundred high-ranking participants will take part in the show jumping competition, which is being held for the 51st time. This includes ten riders from the top hundred in the world, such as Maikel van der Vleuten from the Eindhoven region and daughter of the famous rock singer Jessica Springsteen from the US.

“It is really fantastic to see that the best riders want to ride in Eindhoven so much. We knew there was a lot of enthusiasm for the event, but we could only dream of this field of participants…” says Leopold van Asten of the organisation .

Unique

The competition is popular, among other things, because of its excellent facilities. “It is a very nice large track with a good grass surface,” says Nicola Philippaerts, an Olympic horse rider from Belgium. “The location is very beautiful, the atmosphere is unique and it is also close to home, so my whole family will be there.”

The event attracts around 50,000 visitors annually, spread over the four days. This year the organisation expects an extra number of visitors because this edition is special. It is dedicated to Wim van der Leegte, a loyal fan and sponsor of CSI Eindhoven.

Competition on TV at Studio040

Studio040 will broadcast the registration of two CSI Eindhoven matches on Saturday and Sunday.

DDW to work more with foreign design schools

The Dutch Design Week (DDW) has said the organisation would be working more closely with foreign universities and design schools in the coming years.

There is already cooperation with several foreign schools, such as a design school in London. This will, however, be further expanded and strengthened in the coming years.

“They can be design schools and universities from all over the world from all continents. We are more likely to ‘scout’ abroad for this purpose. What are the relevant social themes and how do design schools and universities respond to them?”, says Edwin Schenk on behalf of DDW.

Must fit in with DDW’s DNA

The search abroad should ultimately result in the work of, as yet unknown, talented designers being shown during the DDW in the coming years. Work with a social impact that “fits in with the DNA of the DDW”.

There has already been an increase in the number of foreign exhibitors in recent years during the DDW. These come not only from international programmes but also from the technical universities in Eindhoven, Enschede, Wageningen, and Delft.
