INDIA DAY: Celebrate Indian Culture

India Day celebrates everything Indian on 2 December 2023. Muziekgebouw Eindhoven’s foyers and stages will be offering live performances of (traditional) Indian dance and music. You can taste delicious Indian food from all regions at the various bazaar stalls and take part in free workshops on traditional arts and crafts such as yoga, Kalaripayattu and Madhubani painting. All regions and languages are represented in the programme.

Bad weather did not dampen Carnaval mood

0

Even though the weather was disappointing, the regional hospitality industry is satisfied with this year’s Carnaval. After five days of celebration, the carnival celebrants can relax, and the pubs can be cleaned up.

After Chiara and Dennis, the other storm called Ellen pummeled the Netherlands during Carnaval. Many parades were cancelled or postponed this year. “Because of the bad weather, people came to the city a bit later than usual,” says Jan Witmer, regional chairman of the Royal Catering Association. “But everything inside is even cosier.”

Storm and rain lead to empty streets but fuller pubs. “The real carnival goer cannot be stopped by bad weather,” says Jimmy Meijer, owner of the Proost and Dependance pubs in Breda. “Locals in Breda were looking forward to this year’s Carnaval. Their enthusiasm can be seen from how much they drink. The turnover is good; that says it all.”

Issues with fake money

Many pubs were alert for counterfeit money during Carnaval. According to Witmer, getting this fake money problem is unavoidable. “Where there are large groups of people, fake money always appears. Then you have got a few glitches here and there.”

Many hospitality business owners have neighbourhood Whatsapp groups. If fake money shows up at a pub, they immediately sound the alarm. “On Thursday, a pub sent a message that someone had been caught with counterfeit money,” Jimmy says. “Then everybody is on high alert right away.”

International book collection section opened at the Eindhoven library

On Saturday, May 21, Mayor Jorritsma, along with several different language communities and the children, festively opened the extensive International Children’s Book Collection in the Eindhoven library.  Together with over a hundred guests, it was made clear: that reading is worth celebrating!

Mayor Jorritsma loves to read to his grandchildren and to young children in the city every
year during the National Read Aloud Breakfast. According to Jorritsma, reading aloud is one of the mayoral duties that he enjoys doing.  He emphasises that “besides being a lot of fun,
reading helps children build their future. Eindhoven is an international city with more than 160 nationalities. The city needs an international library. Books build a bridge between the Netherlands and other countries and cultures”.

Albert Kivits, the director of the Eindhoven library, highlights, “The Eindhoven Library embraces multilingualism and international communities. The International Children’s Book Collection is a great collaboration between the library and the international communities. With the collection, we promote reading pleasure and language development of children and strengthen the connection with Eindhoven.” The library has been working on expanding the international collection for some time. During the renovation of the youth department a year ago, it was given a good, visible place. Because these developments passed quietly during the pandemic, the library seized the moment now to proudly highlight the renewals, expansions, and collaborations.”

A proud day

Gisi Cannizzaro of Heritage Language Education (HLE) Network: “Today is a really proud day for the library, for HLE Network, for the different language groups, and especially for the multilingual children of Eindhoven. Look at what we can achieve when we work together!” Mayor Jorritsma and delegates from the various communities each read a page from the book ukkePuck by Bianca Mastenbroek and Iris van Dijck in their own language. And then it was the children’s turn. The children were given the honour of cutting the ribbons and officially opening the International Children’s Book Collection.

A growing collection

In October 2018, the first steps were taken in cooperation with The Reading Pier, an initiative of mothers Euying Tang-Chong and CT Lim. Their collection of English language children’s books was given a permanent place in the library. A collaboration with Heritage Language Education Network (HLE Network) followed in 2020. HLE Network connects a large number of mother tongue language programs that are on offer in Eindhoven. The various language books that were initially added to the library are Italian and Chinese.  In the next phase, French, Romanian, Bulgarian, Persian, and Polish books followed. In addition to Dutch, there are currently reading-aloud activities in English, Ukrainian, Persian, Chinese, Italian, and Japanese. Ukrainian children’s books were also recently added in cooperation with the local community. Shortly, Korean, Spanish, books from the Indian languages and Turkish books will be added.

Thousands of students in Eindhoven for introduction week

Singing songs, playing games and of course lots of partying. The introduction week started again in Eindhoven on Monday. Thousands of Fontys and TU/e students are participating. “I’m especially looking forward to getting to know my fellow students”, a young man said.

It is still quiet on Monday morning at the Fontys campsite. The future students are still seeing which way the cat jumps. Coloured shirts walk back and forth between the tents. Some youngsters are still busy inflating their air beds. It’s up to the so called “moms and dads” (focal points consisting of students) to bring in the party atmosphere.

“They’ve only just gotten to know each other, of course”, an attendant explains. “And of course it doesn’t help either that drinking is only allowed from 16:00”.

Still, even without alcohol, the students slowly begin to loosen up. Several songs are sung by the counselors about Julia’s breasts and a duckling. Meanwhile, the students are hooking up. “I thought they did well for a first day”, Joris reflects.

TU/e

A quiet start is also made on the TU/e grounds. The students play games together. For example, the mechanical engineers of the future have to make something out of duct tape. However, the introduction week is not only about games and partying.

It is also a chance to get to know the program and fellow students. “For me, it is successful when they have seen that being a student will be one of the highlights of their lives”.

TU/e had students removed unjustly: ‘We were allowed to demonstrate’

One of the students who was arrested in March for demonstrating against the presence of oil company Shell at a TU/e career fair has been declared innocent by the judge.

About twenty students were arrested in March. Then they were fined heftily. Bram, one of the activists who was arrested at the university, was fined 300 euros. He challenged that, which meant that he had to appear in court on Friday 7 October.

The judge was then clear in his judgment, says Bram. “Our freedom to demonstrate should never have been curtailed. That confirms the feeling we had at the time. We were very surprised that after five minutes of demonstration, the police were right in front of us.”

Prosecution

It is unclear whether the prosecution will appeal the ruling. The OM (Netherlands Public Prosecution Service) had initially dropped the demand for the fine because it was under the assumption that the students made the entire career event inaccessible. This turned out not to be the case during the lawsuit – the fair could continue as usual. “The Public Prosecution Service then dropped the demand for the fine, but they wanted me to be found guilty. Fortunately, that didn’t happen,” says Bram.

Deteriorated

As a result of the events, the relationship between the university and the students has deteriorated, says the student-cum-climate activist. “Yes, that seems logical to me. If you think the presence of a company like Shell, which has been spreading lies about climate change for years, is more important than the well-being of your students, then that is not a basis for building a good relationship,” says Bram.

How can that relationship be improved? “Apologies from the university for its behavior would be in order. They haven’t come yet.”

But rather than apologies, Bram prefers something else. “Transparency. That the university is open and honest about its ties to the fossil fuel industry and how much money is involved. But that honestly seems like a utopia to me,” said Bram.

Watching a movie for parents with babies at Natlab

0

The film theatre Natlab in Strijp-S has special shows for parents with young babies.

Watching a movie with babies is often still a hell of a job. When they cry you should leave the theatre. Filling a room only with parents with babies ensures they all can enjoy the movie. Even if a child begins to cry.

During the performances, the lights in the room remain switched on and the sound of the movie is muted. Every Sunday there is a special baby performance in the Natlab, so that even the smallest can go to the cinema and parents can relax for a while.

As an international you can select the English spoken movies of course.

It is not a new concept, in Scandinavia, Australia and Canada for example, this is a known phenomenon.

Eindhoven municipality raises flag on Coming Out Day

0

On Tuesday afternoon The College of Mayor and Aldrpersons stood outside and raised the LHBTIQ-flag to mark national coming out day.

It is a day to support those who wish to express their sexual identity. Alderperson Samir Toub had the honour of hoisting the flag. This is a day for us to show where we stand”, he said. “We are showing Eindhoven residents that we are a safe and diverse environment”.

Alderperson Rik Thijs was also in attendance. “I am out and proud”, he said. Ït is important for me as an alderprson to show that positions such as mine are also held by people from the LHBTIQ-community. It makes me proud as an alderperson to be raising the flag together”.

In the city there is much support for this day. “It is good that our municipality underlines that we can be who we are”, a young woman said. Ï am bisexual, and coming out was easy for me. But it is not an easy step for everyone”.

Park Hilaria entrepreneurs staying over in Eindhoven again

The ‘Funfair village’ will be in Eindhoven this year again and no longer in Helmond, as was the case in recent years.

The trailers, caravans and trucks of the funfair entrepreneurs were parked, on previous editions of Park Hilaria, at an area in Helmond. That site is sold by the Helmond Municipality and so a search for a new temporarily domicile began. Mariola Scheepstra, of the organisation of the fair, was looking to find a location as close to the fairground as possible. Sports park Eindhoven Noord in the district of Woensel has been chosen to accommodate the entrepreneurs.

Closer
“We are pleased that this location is closer than the one in Helmond. Last year we already knew that we had to go to a new place”, says an entrepreneur.
The parking lot where the funfair entrepreneurs will be staying, lies in between sports fields, a residential area and a school. The school playground will also be used for temporary settling. The tennis club and the hockey club will together use one parking space for the time being. “All simple solutions that we can come up with during the summer holidays”, says Scheepstra.

Local residents
The “local residents” have been informed via a letter that the ‘Funfair village’ is settling in their neighbourhood. The nearest houses are, however, about a hundred meters from the car park. Starting on Friday, the facilities are constructed on the site. On Monday the first funfair entrepreneurs will arrive.
