Eindhoven band hosts benefit evening to support Ukrainian band

The Eindhoven band Komatsu will hold a rock benefit evening on Tuesday for the war victims in Ukraine. The formation will also do this to give a Ukrainian rock band a boost.

That band, the Somali Yacht Club, had to cancel their entire tour of Europe because of the war. Next Tuesday, the men were to perform in the Eindhoven Effenaar. The band from Lviv is not allowed to leave the country. The band members showed pictures of the events in their country on social media. “We want you to see this. This is what war in Europe looks like”, they said.

Deeply moved

‘Our staff is deeply touched by all the events and the despair that speaks from the message of Somali Yacht Club’, the pop venue reveals. That’s why the venue will now hold a stoner rock night with Komatsu, but this time for Giro555. Somali Yacht Club will be paid the agreed amount for the performance.

Music connects

“It is good on all sides to support these hard-hit musicians. It is heartwarming that the local rock scene reacts so positively to this last-minute action, which suddenly feels even more urgent because of the absence of a Ukrainian band. Music connects,” says programmer Marco Roelofs.

Besides Komatsu, Trek Flek and An Evening with Knives are also on stage on Tuesday.

Thirteen people from Eindhoven receive medal in Muziekgebouw

It is Koningsdag (King’s Day) and so it is time again for the traditional list of honours. In the Muziekgebouw twelve chosen Eindhoven citizens received a Royal Decoration from Mayor John Jorritsma. One resident got his ribbon pinned at the Ministry of Defence in The Hague.

During the ceremony in the Muziekgebouw there was a moment of silence for all the receivers. There was plenty of appreciation for the new ribbon bearers. Seven people are now ‘Lid in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’ (member of the order of Oranje-Nassau), three are ‘Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’ (knight of the order of Oranje-Nassau), two were awarded ‘Lid in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau met zwaarden’ (member of the order of Oranje-Nassau with swords) and one became ‘Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw’ (knight of the order of the Dutch Lion).

The thirteen lucky ones

Eva González Pérez gained national fame when she brought the benefits affair to light. For years, she has been a great support to fellow countrymen and women who got stuck in the Dutch system through no fault of their own. She was appointed ‘Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau”.

Since 2003, Andre van Gorp has been active as a volunteer for a vulnerable group of clients of SWZ Zonhove, an institution for people with severe multiple disabilities in Son en Breugel. He is now ‘Lid van de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’.

For years, Willem Heerings has played an important role in the commemoration of the liberation of Eindhoven and Nuenen. The fact that Nuenen still celebrates the liberation today is partly thanks to Heerings. He is now ‘Lid in de van Oranje-Nassau’.

Since 1990, Henri van Hout has been the dean of the St. Catharinagilde (guild) in Strijp. Where he is involved in many activities. He received the decoration ‘Lid in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’.

Dolf Hulshoff has been active as a volunteer since the end of the 1980s. He has dedicated himself to improving the quality of life for local residents and to connecting people in Vaartbroek, Heesterakker and Bokt by organising joint activities. He has been appointed ‘Lid van de Orde van Orange-Nassau’.

Ans Hulshoff is a very committed volunteer who has been active for decades. She has been a volunteer for numerous social organisations since the 1970s. She also received a medal.

Leo Joosse is an example of natural leadership. He has shown his added value in several places within the Commando Luchtstrijdkrachten (Royal Netherlands Air Force command). He was honoured as ‘Lid in de Orde van Orange-Nassau with swords’.

Tiny Korsten has been involved as a board member since the Stichting Bewonersorganisatie Burghplan in Stratum (foundation of the Burghplan residents’ organisation in Stratum) in 1992, most of the time as treasurer. She is also involved in organising all the activities in the neighbourhood. She is now ‘Lid van de Orde van Orange-Nassau’.

Frans Prinsen is a binding factor within Strijp. For years he has been a selfless volunteer for various organisations. He also received a ribbon of honour.

Dick Schoot is one of the figureheads of endoscopic gynaecological surgery in the Netherlands and has set up a working group for this. His achievements are far more extensive than can be expected from a general gynaecologist. He was the only one to be awarded ”Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw.

Jopie Verdonk is a volunteer with his heart on the sleeve and in the right place. Since 2004 Verdonk has been involved in the South-East Brabant branch of Hoormij NVVS, the national patient organisation for people with a hearing impairment. She is now ‘Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’.

Frans van Vugt became a member of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Sociaal Psychiatrisch Verpleegkundigen (dutch association for social psychiatric nurses) in 1979. On a voluntary basis he was active in profiling and promoting the professional group. He was awarded  ‘Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’.

Eric Nettekoven received his award at the Ministry of Defence in The Hague. He is co-founder of the Stichting Veteranen Brabant-Zuidoost (foundation brabant-zuidoost). The foundation was set up in 2006 and he has been a board member ever since. He was decorated as ‘Lid in de Orde van of Oranje-Nassau with swords’.

Volunteers look forward to return of Brabantsedag: ‘Goosebumps moment’

Finally back, that is the prevailing feeling among the organisers of the Brabantsedag. The annual wagon parade in Heeze returns to the streets of the village after a two-year corona break. Volunteers can’t wait. “It’s already starting to itch”.

Harald van Schie, organising member of the Brabantsedag, can’t believe his luck. Just like any other enthusiast, he says. “Heeze is a very close community, at least 20 per cent are really active members of the parade. It’s all about the Brabantsedag all year round. And so finally again without corona troubles. After 62 years of continuously staging the parade, it feels super weird that it hasn’t happened in two years. But that makes it extra nice that it can happen again. A real goosebump moment, it is already starting to itch”.

Enthusiasm

Many members of the organisation stopped. Still, not continuing the parade was not an option, Van Schrie tells. “The bond with the event is so important for Heeze. The flags and posters are already hanging out. The village forms a unity”.

The organisation sees hospitality as an important spearhead for the coming edition. “It often takes place on one of the hottest days of the month. We are therefore planning to set up a covered grandstand for the public”.

Brabantsedag

The Brabantsedag is a float parade that takes place annually on the last Sunday in August. Sixteen float groups choose their own theme from an overarching one, on which they design and build their own float. The themes always have a connection with the history of Brabant.

The spectacle attracts between 30,000 and 40,000 visitors each year. Quite a number, considering that Heeze has a population of just under 10,000.

With Verve

This year’s theme – ‘Met (with) Verve‘ – had already been decided on in 2020. The edition of that year, which was eventually cancelled, had the same theme. Van Schrie: “Painters from Brabant are central. It is up to each building group to design a kind of ‘two-layer translation’ of a painting they have chosen”.

~Ed. – With the word ‘verve‘ there is a word play on ‘verf‘ (paint).

Halloween and horror in the Distelstraat

0

Little witches, monsters on stilts and plenty of candy. These are the ingredients for the spooky Halloween night in Eindhoven’s Distelstraat this weekend. Hundreds of dressed-up children came from all over the Kruidenbuurt neighbourhood to have a look.

The party is popular. You can tell by the many visitors who stopped by this year. Big clown heads, witch circles and cobwebs lit up the street and houses.

Terrifying

Screams and howls ring out from the speakers of houses where sweets lie on the tables and dressed-up residents sit waiting for the children. Together, it creates a spooky atmosphere that is still just a little too scary for some young children.

Local residents keep a watchful eye and make sure the tour is fun for everyone. Children fill their bags and buckets with sweets or they run through the haunted house for the fourth time.

Socialising

The residents have spent weeks dreaming up and creating outfits and decorations. They especially enjoy being together. “We have just moved here, and get in touch with the neighbourhood easily through parties like this,” explains resident Kim Obbens. The organisation plans to involve more streets in the neighbourhood event in the coming years.

Record number of visitors for preHistorisch Dorp

The preHistorisch Dorp (prehistoric village) in Eindhoven received a record number of visitors last season. The counter came to a total of 72,000 guests.

That is an increase of forty per cent over last year. Although 2021 was a corona year, even then the preHistorisch Dorp as an open-air museum did not have to complain about visitor numbers.

Crowd pullers
Especially for the anniversary year, there were themes from different periods of history. Yvonne Lammers of the museum looks back. “The big crowd pullers were Heksia, the event for witches, and Vikingfest. That archaeology is alive and that there is a lot of interest in it was evident from the reactions of visitors after their visit to the new ArcheoFactory”.

Spirit lingers in Philips de Jongh Park

A labyrinth was unveiled in Philips de Jongh Park this weekend amid great interest. It is a posthumous gift from legendary Eindhoven DJ Lady Aïda.

DJ from Eindhoven

The DJ – whose real name was Aïda Spaninks – enjoyed international fame and was an inspiration to many people with her music, versatility and spirituality. Hence also the great interest at the unveiling of her gift, which, in addition to being a gift to Eindhoven is of course also a memento of her personality. “Warm, sweet, special. And we could laugh and howl with her,” said two visitors to the unveiling. They see the labyrinth as a place where they can go when they need comfort or just want to think of the late DJ.

Sound

The Rebelbass foundation, commissioned by Spaninks to create the labyrinth, is not yet finished. Sound still needs to be added to the monument – entirely in the spirit of DJ Aïda. Chairman Ron van der Sterren is talking with several sound artists who will create special audio at the memorial. Every year, it is planned, a new audio tour will be added to the maze. So that walkers and passersby in the park can briefly imagine themselves in another world altogether…. because that’s how dj lady Aïda, in her last stage of life, conceived it all.
