Veldhoven neighbours win €1.000.000 together

Celebration in Copernicushof in Veldhoven. Residents of that street have together won €1.000,000 in the Postcode Loterij (postal code lottery). “Now we can go on a wonderful holiday to Mallorca with the children. And buy a new car!”, winners Gidi and Carolien say.

The money is divided among the five participants on the street. They receive amounts between €100,000 and €300,000, depending on the number of lottery tickets they play. In the case of Tiny and Mary, this means that they can credit €200,000 to their bank account. “We are moving soon. A lot still needs to be done in the new house. With this fantastic amount we will purchase a new bathroom, carpeting and a new cupboard”.

Neighbours Suzanne and Niels also already know what they are going to do with their money. “We have been renovating for 2.5 years. Fortunately, we are almost done. There are still a few small things that need to be done, such as renovating the stairs and new window coverings. We can achieve that nicely with this amount. It really is the icing on the cake!”

Not the first time

It is the second time in a few months that a Postcode Loterij win lands in Veldhoven. In October, residents of De Huysacker could share €1.000,000.

Entrepreneur and rally driver Jan de Rooy passed away

Jan de Rooy has passed away. The former rally driver, winner of the Dakar Rally and transport entrepreneur, died on Tuesday at the age of 80.

“After a very short illness, our dad, husband and grandfather passed away peacefully and was reunited with our great love, Annie. He has dedicated 65 years to his transport company De Rooy, which celebrated its centenary last year”, the family business said in a response.

The Eindhoven region has lost one of its most notable transport entrepreneurs. Jan de Rooy was born in Eindhoven on 19 February, 1943. His father Graad had been running the transport company for years, which Jan, then 22 years old, took over in 1965. He had fourteen trucks at the time, which eventually became four hundred. His brother Harry also entered the transport world and started De Rooy Logistics, which still transports parts for the DAF factories.

Rallycross

That is also where most people know Jan de Rooy from: racing DAFs. He started rallycrossing in 1969, not in trucks, but cars. De Rooy managed to win several Dutch titles and international podium places, especially in his DAF 55, until he switched to trucks in 1982 at the request of DAF itself.

The manufacturer wanted Jan to participate in Paris-Dakar, a desert race across Africa to the Senegalese capital Dakar. There he quickly got the nickname ‘De Beer’ (‘the bear’) and that did not only refer to his large stature. Fearless and extremely agile, he drove his converted trucks faster and faster through the desert.

Rally winning trucks

De Rooy built special trucks for the desert rally. For example, he turned two trucks into one, but with two engines and two cabins: the double header in 1984. Things really got serious after the introduction of the DAF Turbo Twin ll in 1986, a truck with two engines that together delivered more than a thousand horsepower.

In 1987 he became winner of the truck classification. His lead over the number two in that class was no less than fourteen hours. De Rooy even finished eleventh in the general classification, among the rally cars. That left him wanting more, because the driver from Son wanted to compete with the rally cars.

Dramatic accident

Jan de Rooy was given a completely free hand by DAF in 1988 to win the general classification. The result was the 1200 hp (horse power) X1. The images in which the DAF truck overtakes the car of top driver Ari Vatanen are iconic. De Rooy also deployed a second truck, but it overturned. The accident claimed the life of Kees van Loevezijn and driver Theo van de Rijt was injured. DAF withdrew from the rally and Jan de Rooy would not appear again in Paris-Dakar for years.

His son Gerard managed to persuade him to participate again from 2002, but in 2009 Jan de Rooy finally stopped participating in the ‘Dakar’. He felt that he could not tolerate his employees to have such an expensive hobby during the economic crisis. Moreover, he did not agree with the rally being moved from Africa to South America.

Succession

Son Gerard and daughter Anneke de Rooy have been at the helm of the transport company since 2010. Something their father Jan was very proud of. There was also follow-up as a victor in the Dakar Rally. First in 2007 when cousin Hans Stacey won the truck rally. In 2012, son Gerard finally managed to win. That was particularly emotional for father Jan, 25 years after his own victory. In 2016, his son won a second Dakar title in the trucks.

Jan de Rooy no longer followed the Dakar Rally in recent years. He lived a relatively secluded life in Middelbeers with his partner.

More than 14,000 visitors at New Year’s EHVE

At the foot of the Light Tower, Eindhoven residents started the new year with a bang. It was the first time a central show full of lights, music and fireworks took place in the city. New Year’s EHVE, as the spectacle is called, was a great success according to the organisation.

“We are very satisfied, it turned out very well,” says project leader Patrick van de Voort. We were biting our nails because in several other towns the fireworks shows were cancelled due to the weather. “Though, even if we ‘d had to do without fireworks, it would still have been a good show”, he says. In addition to fireworks, there was music by La Fuente, Fresku and Joël Borelli and a light show.

That choice did not come out of the blue, because the organisation wanted a unique show that suited the city. As a City of Light, natural light is involved. “We wanted to tell a story, one that suits the people of Eindhoven and not one that you could see in every city”.

The organisation, Eindhoven247, hopes that the success of the New Year’s show will become a tradition. In total, around 14,000 people attended the first edition. At its peak, at midnight, there were ten thousand people present at the event. The evening passed without incident. It was a quiet evening for both the first aid and security.

After one lesson from Mrs. Li, half the class speaks Chinese

Students from group eight of Eindhoven primary school Rapenland received a special prize on Tuesday: a Chinese lesson from the unsurpassed Mrs. Li.

“Ni hao!” the teacher, whose name is Mrs. Li, says in greeting. Most people know that word. But soon the material becomes more difficult. The digital whiteboard is full of Chinese characters and you can pronounce the word ‘Ma’ in five different ways. The class repeats everything in unison, just as Ms. Li requested.

Group eight won the prize after participating in a quiz. The lesson is offered by Stedelijk College (urban college), the Eindhoven school that has internationalisation as a spearhead. Chinese has been offered here as an optional subject for ten years.

“It’s quite interesting”, a boy in class, with a special German first name, says. “I’ve never been to China, but if I do go there, I now at least know what to say”.

Papiamento

The fact that internationalisation is making good progress on Rapenland primary school is noticeable in the classroom. “Which of you doesn’t speak Dutch at home?”, the teacher asks. A lot of fingers go up in response. Portuguese, German, Russian, Kurdish and Papiamento: students who only speak Dutch at home are almost in the minority.

The class can easily master the Chinese lesson. There are even students who stand up, introduce themselves out loud and then count to ten in the new language. Is it because of that internationalisation? Or by Ms. Li’s teaching style? After each correct answer, she looks as if she has won the lottery and makes the whole class applaud.

Fortune cookies

As a reward, Chinese fortune cookies are handed out at the end of the lesson. And this time the cultural diversity throws a bit of a spanner in the works. Because the fasting month of Ramadan has just started and most children are fasting, only a few can open and eat the fortune cookie.

Climate activists again occupy the TU/e building

Climate activists are taking action again on the TU/e grounds on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. This time the students are occupying part of the Auditorium building on the university campus.

The students are holding a sit-down action in a lecture hall in the middle of the building. The campaign is running without any problems. The students planned to stay in the building at night, but that was not possible. “We have been told by the building’s manager that we are not allowed to stay overnight, though there were certainly people who were willing to be arrested. This would be a personal decision for who wanted to stay or leave after a claim”, Robin Kwakkernaat, spokesperson for the action group, said.

Cut ties

University Rebellion previously demanded that Eindhoven University cuts all ties with the fossil industry. Oil company Shell will be present again during the recruitment days on Tuesday and Wednesday. During a previous occupation, demonstrators were violently removed from a boardroom.

Impact

The action group regularly talks to the university’s executive board about making the school more sustainable. These conversations lead to positive developments, but it is not enough, the activists believe. “The board has already declared a climate crisis and they have said that they will only work together on renewable energy projects”, Kwakkernaat says.

Despite these commitments, students continue to resist. “We will stay here as long as we believe that the university participates in the destructive practices of the fossil fuel industry. We believe it is extremely important to create awareness among students about the impact of fossil energy on the climate”.

Not only sitting

Protesters who participate in the occupation of the lecture hall do not have to be bored. Lectures are held and food is distributed.

Sexual harassment ‘the order of the day’

Sexual harassment may seem far-fetched to many Eindhoven residents, but in reality almost three-quarters of Dutch women experience it. “I don’t think people realise the extent to which gender based violence takes place in the Netherlands”, Juliana Bosch, of Feminist Wave Eindhoven, says. That is why the feminist action group is holding a protest in the city centre on Friday evening to create awareness.

According to Feminist Wave Eindhoven, gender-related violence has become normal in society. That would be the result of inequality between different genders. Women in particular would suffer from this. For example, a study by the action group shows that 13 per cent of the boys surveyed indicate that hitting their girlfriend is necessary to gain respect. “These figures come from the culture we live in. I think we should talk about what is happening in the Netherlands, many people are not aware of that”, Bosch says.

Reason for Feminist Wave Eindhoven to take action. The protest starts at 17:30 and lasts until 22:00 on March 8 at Dynamo. At the beginning there is a meeting and then a film is played showing figures regarding violence against women in the Netherlands. In the meantime, the action group is handing out flyers.

The organisation has been protesting on 18Septemberplein for the past three years. Now the protest will take place at Dynamo. “We hope to talk to many different people on Friday so that we create awareness about gender violence in the Netherlands”, Juliana said.

This is what you can do in the Eindhoven region during carnival

0

Just over a week and then carnival will start again. There are plenty of parties and parades planned in the Eindhoven region, so here is a schedule of some of the expected events taking place:

Eindhoven

Just like last year, there are large tents on three squares in Eindhoven. The Bavaria Bierhal is located on Stadhuisplein. A different activity takes place here every day, including three hours of Weijer, mini tie children’s carnival and stepping.

There is also a tent on the Markt. Every day, artists such as Lamme Frans, Monique Smit and Vieze Jack take the stage here. The tent is especially popular among the youth. The third tent is on the Wilhelminaplein. This is mainly for the public who are fans of the more traditional Eindhoven carnival.

The grand parade of Lampegat is on February 18. This starts at 12:41 with the children’s running groups.

Mierlo

In Mierlo there are two carnival associations that provide a full program. CV De Kersepit organizes four evenings with performances in café De Koffer. There is a children’s carnival on Sunday and Monday afternoon.

CV De Spruwwejagers also provides a multi-day programme. Various artists, including Jan Biggel and Geen Stempel will perform in ‘t Mierles Huukske. On Monday morning you can hang out with an egg sandwich. To conclude, they organize an evening eating herring on Saturday 25 February.

The big parade of Mierlo is on Carnival Saturday. This time the motto of the parade is: Wai dreije wir!

Geldrop

Also in Geldrop there is no sitting still during carnival. Carnival starts there on Friday afternoon with music by DJ Roel.

On Saturday and Sunday evening, various artists will perform at Heerenhuys 23. Monday afternoon it’s time to pull out the farmer’s smock. Then there is a farmer’s smock afternoon.

The Geldrop parade can be seen on Sunday afternoon.

Waalre

In Waalre they start early. Friday morning at 08:30 Youth Prince Levi and Prince Giel will visit various schools in Aalst, Waalre and Veldhoven. In the evening, Prince Giel and Erik d’n twidde will tap the first keg of Dommelsch Carnival beer during the twinning of Keiengat and Bremspoersengat.

On Sunday afternoon there is a masquerade ball and on Monday evening various mop orchestras will perform in the Oude Toren. The big parade of Waalre is on Saturday. Afterwards there will be music in the Oude Toren.

Nuenen

Nuenen caters for all ages. The senior carnival ball will start on Friday afternoon. People over 50 are welcome to enjoy live music, singing and dancing.

For the children there is a children’s carnival in the monastery on Saturday and Monday afternoon. There is also plenty to do for teenagers. A five-day teenage carnival is organized in the Residence.

After two years of no parade due to corona, it will continue this year. That’s on Sunday afternoon.

Veldhoven

In Veldhoven, carnival celebrations start on Friday evening with the real sing-along during Echt Veldhovenz Luidkeels. The children’s parade is on Saturday. After the procession, the key to the city is handed over.

The grand parade of Rommelgat can be seen on Sunday. The key to the city will be returned on Tuesday evening.

Less insecure since Miss Teen contest

Miss Teen of Noord Brabant might be from Eindhoven. 17-year-old Lizzy van der Hoeff is one of the contenders for the prestigious title. And that is something that was unthinkable for her a while ago. “I was very concerned with what others thought of me and what they said about me”.

At first glance, participating in a beauty contest seems like a strange choice. The stereotypical image is that it is all about appearance, but nothing could be further from the truth according to Lizzy and her proud stepmother. “I am very positively surprised to see what it means to participate in such an election. You also have to be socially active”, Audrey Fernand explains. “They also look at what you are like and we raise money for charity”, Lizzy adds.

Participating in Miss Teen of Noord-Brabant also requires the necessary training. “We are learning how to walk in heels, how to walk the rounds and we are going to practice the opening dance. So we still have a lot of work to do”. And what if that hard work pays off and Lizzy wins? “Then I really start screaming and crying. Then some emotions really come out”, she says with a laugh.

Whether the Eindhoven native will actually be crowned Miss Teen of Noord Brabant remains to be seen. Thirty more finalists are in the race. The winner will be announced on 3 February.

Natlab appoints new director due to ‘major challenges’

Plaza Futura, the foundation that operates Natlab film house, has appointed Jan van der Putten as its new director. The film house is said to be confronted with ‘major challenges’. Director and artistic director Ilona van Heeckeren has stepped down.

Because visitor numbers at the Natlab have lagged since the corona crisis, the Natlab had to take measures earlier. For example, some of the catering staff were dismissed.

A new financial interim manager was also appointed in September last year, Harry Wiechers. He is now succeeded by Van der Putten. Ilona van Heeckeren, who was still active as artistic director for Natlab, has been terminated by the Raad van Toezicht (supervisory board). Van Heeckeren stated that she does not agree with the decision, but that she cannot go into further detail at this time.

Gradual increase

“In recent months, intensive work has been done to address these shortages and attract more visitors. The first positive results of these efforts are currently becoming visible, with a gradual increase in the number of visitors and a gradual extension of the café’s opening hours”, the Raad van Toezicht said.

Healthy

According to the supervisory board, Van der Putten must get the Natlab back on track. “The ambition is to make Natlab a cultural hotspot in Eindhoven again. A place where collaboration in the field of film, theatre, art and culture is central. A meeting place for all Eindhoven residents. In addition, Van der Putten has been expressly instructed to make the operation of the stichting (foundation) Plaza Futura healthy in a sustainable manner”.
