Hans van Breukelen presents 25th bowl to PSV

If PSV becomes champion coming Sunday against Sparta, Hans van Breukelen will present the bowl to Peter Bosz’s team.

PSV has announced that. The Eindhoven citizens need one more point to become official champions. At the same time it is clear that the team cannot escape the championship because of a much better goal difference than the Rotterdam club.

Van Breukelen says it is a great honour to hand over the trophy to the club. If the team scores at least one point on Sunday, the trophy will be presented immediately after the match.

‘Thoroughly enjoyed’

“I think it is a great honour that I can present the bowl”, Van Breukelen said. “I have tremendously enjoyed the good soccer game that Peter Bosz’s team has shown this season. That makes it extra special that I get to present the trophy”.

Van Breukelen retired as a member of PSV’s supervisory board in 2023. The former goalkeeper played 393 matches for PSV in his career. In those matches, he became the national champion six times, won the European Cup I, three KNVB Cups and twice the Johan Cruijff Schaal.

Ode to Eindhoven street preacher with new beer ‘Goeie Arnol’

Rabauw Brewery pays tribute to Eindhoven city preacher Arnol Kox with a new beer, called ‘Goeie Arnol’ (Good Arnol). “Despite the fact that he was not always understood by everyone, he was able to find his place in society”.

Gerry Diederen, Arnol’s widow, will receive the first can. “I was very surprised”, Gerry says. “It is a great initiative and I think Arnol would have found this very funny. It’s nice to hear that people still remember him”.

Ode
Rabauw wants to pay tribute to the city preacher with the beer. “In our brewery we offer a place to people with a weaker position in society. Arnol was not always understood by everyone and did not have an obvious place in society. Despite that, he was able to find his angle”, Joyce de Vaan, van Rabauw, says.

Design
Tattoo artist Robbert of Twentytwo Tatto created the design of the can. “On the tin, Arnol is surrounded by well-known Eindhoven buildings such as Evoluon and Witte Dame”, Joyce says. “How exactly the design will look will remain a secret for a while, but Arnol will be prominently featured”.

The taste of the beer is striking. “It’s Wee Heavy. That’s an 8.4 per cent dark ale with a caramel-like flavour”.

First can
On Good Friday, Gerry will receive the first can at Brewpub Rabauw on Strijp-S. “I am very curious”, Gerry says. “Normally I never drink actually and when I drink it is 0.0. I’m so used to that, because Arnol couldn’t drive”.

PVV largest party in Geldrop-Mierlo and Best

The PVV became by far the largest party in Geldrop-Mierlo during the House of Representatives elections. The party of Geert Wilders obtained almost 28 percent of the votes. In Best, the PVV also became the largest by far.

This is evident from the final results in these two regional municipalities. In Geldrop-Mierlo, the victory of the PVV was convincing. With 11 percent of the votes, the party distanced itself from the number two VVD. This was followed by NSC and PvdA/GroenLinks.

Convincing

In Best, the victory was also convincing. There, too, the VVD has to make do with 5 percent of the votes less than number 2. Here too, party leader Omtzigt’s NSC completes the top 3.

VVD still the largest

In Son en Breugel, Nuenen and Waalre the picture is slightly different. There the VVD emerged as the largest party. In Son en Breugel the PVV is hot on the heels of the VVD, followed by the NSC and then the PvdA/GroenLinks. In Nuenen and Waalre the same picture, although in these municipalities the number 3 is not Omtzigt’s party to PvdA/GroenLinks.

Turnout relatively high

Turnout Wednesday in Eindhoven’s peripheral municipalities was relatively high. In almost all villages it exceeded 80 percent. In Geldrop-Mierlo, turnout was slightly lower at 79.6 percent. This is still more than the national average, which is over 78 percent.

Leading

Nationally, the PVV took the win. The party of leader Geert Wilders came after counting the votes with 35 seats well above the other parties. He may now take the lead in forming a new coalition.

Festive entertainment at your door

0

The Eindhoven Arts Centre (CKE) and the Parktheater have joined hands with neighbourhood organisations.

Together, they’re bringing art and culture right to the doorstep of residents in various parts of the city. There will be parades with live music and theatre and dance performances. These will be travelling through the streets of Eindhoven from today onwards.

Every evening, under the name Warme Winter Stoet (Warm Winter Parade), a different neighbourhood will be surprised by these performances. The will continue until right before Christmas. The last one will be on Wednesday, 23 December.

Supporting local organisations

The idea was born from all the upcoming public holidays. Because of the anti-corona measures, gatherings with loved ones are out of the question. The CKE and Parktheater,  therefore, decided to support the various neighbourhood organisations.

“This year’s holidays are going to be weird. So, there are no big family Christmas gatherings. No o dancing in the new year. No friendly neighbourhood activities. That’s why we want to bring a little warmth and light to the neighbourhoods in a different way,” Wikke Peters and Marjon Reus, of CKE and Parktheater, say.

“In the dark days before Christmas, we’ve organised all kinds of great activities. These are on the initiative of the neighbourhood organisations. All, of course, corona-proof.”

Dual purpose

“These activities have a dual purpose. Not only are we bringing warmth to people’s doorsteps. We’re also allowing dozens of artists to make a meaningful contribution to the city at a time when the culture sector is struggling,” Peters and Reus conclude.

These activities are made financially possible by Woonbedrijf.

Come hear the story of ‘Earthly Survival’

0

Want to hear an intriguing view of life? On Thursday, 7 February, The MU artspace in Eindhoven is screening a short film called ‘Donna Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival’.

This English, 82-minute long film will give the viewer a peek into this important, contemporary thinker’s train of thoughts. Professor Donna Haraway used to teach in the Departments of  History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies at the University of California in America.

In the ’80s, she became known for her work in the area of gender identity and technology. She broke away from the prevailing trends and opened the door to bold transfeminism. With her work, this influential scientist, feminist, and lover of science-fiction bridges the gap between science and fiction.

Filmmaker, Fabrizio Terranova, sought Haraway out at her home in California. He just about moved in with her for a few weeks. Terranova did this so he could produce a unique documentary about Haraway. The result is said to be a rare, candid, intellectual portrait of a woman many consider to be a highly original thinker.

This once-off screening will be held at the MU artspace at 40-06 Torenallee. Doors open at 19:30 and the film will start at 20:00. Tickets, which are available at Eventbrite, cost €7,50. Students only have to pay €5.

Free heaters and blankets to combat the cold

There was a run at the Catharinakerk in Eindhoven on Wednesday afternoon. Heaters, blankets and footmuffs were given away to poor people in front of the church. “It feels like a godsend,” says a woman visibly emotional.

She came by bike from Geldrop to be at the moment of distribution. Not only for herself, but also for an elderly friend who was unable to make the trip. “I’m in debt restructuring and that friend of mine h state pension. We don’t have two a cents to rub together, so this really feels like a gift from heaven”, she says while trying to hold back her tears. Another woman who has just acquired a footmuff and heater is less enthusiastic. “I think the initiative is great, don’t get me wrong. But it’s crazy that this is necessary in a country like the Netherlands.”

it’s a shame

The initiator, Hugo van Rooij of the (Z)onder Dak foundation, would also have preferred it not to be necessary. Normally he is committed to the homeless, but with the increasing number of residents struggling due to the high cost of living, he decided to launch this scheme. That idea came about three or four months ago. “I received a message from a family that was out in the cold, actually asking if I could do something for them. And that’s how the ball started rolling, but I didn’t expect it to become so big.”

In total, seven hundred heaters, blankets and footmuffs were distributed. Bought piece by piece by Van Rooij, partly with the help of donations. Those products were gone in no time, because people were waiting in long queues. “Someone just came and I had to disappoint them. In retrospect I think ‘Hugo, if you had bought more stuff, you could have helped more people’.”

However, joy reigns among the crowd. ‘Hugo, thanks’, one can hear everywhere. “Without this heater I would have been out in the cold. I hoped it wouldn’t freeze too much, because the pipes would also freeze soon. Then I’d be in even deeper trouble, because I can’t afford to have repairs done. So I’m very happy with the heater.”
