Internationals have many burning questions, such as inflation, taxation, housing issues, the 30% ruling, immigration policy, higher education courses in English, inflation, economic growth, childcare allowance and so on. The number of internationals with a vote in the Brainport region has increased significantly. If you have a vote, it’s all the more important that you attend the debate before you decide.

Is it right to convert agricultural land to neighbourhoods to solve the housing crisis? What are the ecological implications of doing so?

Should health insurance deductibles be abolished? If so, how does it affect premiums?

What do parties propose to deal with the demand for daycare for children?

Should families of refugees be allowed to live in the Netherlands? Which parties support that which don’t?

What are the standpoints of the parties about taxation and futuristic tax reform?

Should other countries be welcome to join the European Union? What are the connotations?

Recently, Omtzigt, the leader of the NSC (Nieuw Sociaal Contract) party, said that expats control the housing market in Amsterdam because of their disposable income, enabled by the 30% tax rebate. Bhagaya, an expat, defends, “The disposable income because of the 30% ruling is barely sufficient to take care of the international school fees of my two children”. How will the changes to the 30% ruling affect the Dutch economy? How do political parties intend to deal with reverberations?

The international students, on the other hand, are concerned about housing issues, zoekjaar visum (search year visa) and the country’s economic growth. After all, they would like to weigh their prospects.

Date: 16 November 2023

Time: 18:00 to 20:00 hrs

Venue: Raadzaal, Stadhuis Eindhoven (city hall)

Stadhuisplein 1 A (5611 EM Eindhoven).

The Netherlands, known for its egalitarianism, should hear the concerns of all people to support an inclusive growth and cohesive society. Brainport region as the front-runner for this characteristic #Brainport voor Elkaar (for each other) is leading the way.

The debate is supported by the Gemeente Eindhoven (Municipality of Eindhoven), other English media such as NL Times, Dutch News and Radio4Brainport and other organisations such as Eindhoven Airport and Brainport Development.

No skating rink in the city this year: tall present tower instead

Anyone who has looked around the 18 Septemberplein in Eindhoven has probably noticed something. This week, a real present tower has been erected. With this initiative, entrepreneurs’ association Stichting Binnenstad Eindhoven (SBE) wants to attract more people to the city centre.

It is something different than the traditional Christmas market. The SBE wants to end the year in a festive way with the ‘Wrap up the Year’ campaign. “In Eindhoven we like to do things a bit differently. This December, the city has been wrapped with Eindhoven gift paper” said Mariette Vetter of SBE.

Eye catcher

The ten-metre-high present tower, which was financed by the entrepreneurs themselves, is intended, according to Vetter, as an eye-catcher to guide people to the shops. “You can see the structure from a great distance, for example when you come from the station. You can’t go inside the tower, but diorama boxes with a winter landscape can be viewed within two of the presents.”

Skating rink

Within the ‘Wrap up the Year’ campaign there is no room for a Christmas market and an ice rink. “We thought an ice rink was a bit outdated and therefore not suitable for Eindhoven. The Christmas atmosphere will certainly be there with lighting, colourful shop windows, a music programme and other activities in the city. This was something we wanted to do before, but was postponed due to corona virus.” said Vetter.

According to Vetter, the energy crisis has nothing to do with these innovative plans, although that does of course play a role. “An ice rink uses copious amounts of energy, so we won’t have those costs this year. Although we are putting more money into mood lighting than in previous years due to the energy crisis.”

KNWU top competition BMX at Lion d’Or in Valkenswaard

A national BMX competition will take place at FCC Lion d’Or in Valkenswaard next Sunday. About seven hundred BMX cyclists from all over the Netherlands will compete for the day’s victory as well as points for the NK (Dutch championships), EC (European championships) and WC (world championships). It is the third race in a series of eight.

The national competition will be held over three days. Practice sessions, where riders can get used to the track and the starting gate, are on Friday evening, 5 May, and Saturday, 6 May. On Sunday, 7 May, starting at 11:00, everyone will race three heats. After that, the eighth-, quarter-, semis and finals will take place.

In addition, points will be distributed. If riders have accumulated enough points during the season, they have a chance to participate in the NK (2 July in Venlo), the EC (on 9 July in Besançon, France) and the WC (in August in Glasgow, Scotland). A number of FCC Lion d’Or riders are already working hard to reach that standard.

The FCC Lion d’Or track is located on Monseigneur Smetsstraat in Valkenswaard.

Grand stand for the differently abled at Lampegat parade

People with disabilities can watch the Carnival parade from a grandstand for the first time in Eindhoven. Next year, during the Lampegat parade on 18 Septemberplein, there will be special places for people in wheelchairs.

This gives them a good view of all the floats that pass by, Stichting Federatie Eindhovens Carnaval (Eindhoven Carnival Federation Foundation, SFEC) says. In addition to the stands for the disabled, there will be more adjustments next Carnival. “We no longer drive through Kerkstraat. It is too narrow there, and the people are too close together. We have noticed after corona that people no longer like that. The municipality also thought so, and so we have avoided narrow streets when planning the route”, Jasper Liplijn of SFEC explains.

The parade starts on Saturday, 10 February, at 13:11 at Paterskerk and then goes via Vestdijk towards 18 Septemberplein. Then the route goes between the pillars of the Piazza entrance, towards Emmasingel, and ends between the Keizersgracht and Wal just past Stadhuisplein.

Higher float

A different route with no more room for Bleekweg, Bleekstraat, Kanaalstraat, Ten Hagestraat and Kerkstraat has been decided now. However, there is a big advantage. “The float can now be a maximum of nine metres high instead of seven metres. They already do that in surrounding villages, so that was certainly a wish of the builders”.

According to Liplijn, smuggling with extra metres is not a good idea. “We hold each car against the measuring stick and see exactly which car exceeds the maximum height. This way, we can maintain a line”.

Grandstand for disabled people

For the first time during the parade, there is a grandstand for people in wheelchairs. “We have someone in the organisation who does a lot for people with disabilities, and she came up with this idea. We had not thought about how difficult it could be for this group”.

According to the SFEC, the grandstand is the same as at the Eindhoven marathon. “It went well there, too, so why not here. This way, we can give dozens of people in wheelchairs a good view of everything that passes by”.

Thousands of students in Eindhoven for introduction week

Singing songs, playing games and of course lots of partying. The introduction week started again in Eindhoven on Monday. Thousands of Fontys and TU/e students are participating. “I’m especially looking forward to getting to know my fellow students”, a young man said.

It is still quiet on Monday morning at the Fontys campsite. The future students are still seeing which way the cat jumps. Coloured shirts walk back and forth between the tents. Some youngsters are still busy inflating their air beds. It’s up to the so called “moms and dads” (focal points consisting of students) to bring in the party atmosphere.

“They’ve only just gotten to know each other, of course”, an attendant explains. “And of course it doesn’t help either that drinking is only allowed from 16:00”.

Still, even without alcohol, the students slowly begin to loosen up. Several songs are sung by the counselors about Julia’s breasts and a duckling. Meanwhile, the students are hooking up. “I thought they did well for a first day”, Joris reflects.

TU/e

A quiet start is also made on the TU/e grounds. The students play games together. For example, the mechanical engineers of the future have to make something out of duct tape. However, the introduction week is not only about games and partying.

It is also a chance to get to know the program and fellow students. “For me, it is successful when they have seen that being a student will be one of the highlights of their lives”.

Catharina Hospital organizes taste test for chemo patients

Hardly taste anything or feel nauseous when you smell food? These are some of the side effects that chemotherapy patients have to contend with. In August and September, these people can go to the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven for a free taste test to find out what they like.

The taste test of the Catharina Cancer Institute is part of a national study that started at the end of July. The aim of the tasting is to find out what patients do like after chemotherapy. Because, according to the hospital, having a reduced appetite can have consequences on the recovery and the quality of life of the patients.

Loss of taste

After chemotherapy, some patients notice that their taste is affected. They hardly taste anything, they taste something very strongly or they get nauseous when they smell food. In some cases, they may experience a lingering metallic or cardboard taste.

Patients affected by this will receive a free taste test that approximately takes an hour. During that tasting it is determined what someone likes and what doesn’t.

“The results of this test are extensively discussed with the participants in the study. They also remain in contact with a chef afterwards, so that, thanks to good coaching, they can get to work with the ingredients themselves,” explains chef Wilko Lichteveld; who is one of the supervisors of this research. “We know that a personal approach is important. So far we have not been able to use the same prescription for any two patients. It’s all custom work. It’s great to see someone relishing food again.”

Participate

People who have had chemotherapy and want to participate in the study can do so by sending an email to kookvoorkanker@catharinaziekenhuis.nl
