Eindhoven Box Cup 2021 canceled

The fifth edition of the Eindhoven Box Cup, which was to happen from 20 to 24 May, has been canceled.

Earlier, the organisation announced that the tournament would continue because of the sponsorship from Jack’s Casino. The casino would compensate for the lack of paying spectators at the event. Specifically, it was announced that 200 boxers would compete.

However, due to the persistent corona situation, many athletes receive negative travel advice to come to the Netherlands. Therefore, the selections from various Asian countries, Russia, Ireland and England, have withdrawn from participation in the tournament.

As a result, the organisation cannot deliver the quality as previous editions. That is why, in consultation with the international boxing association AIBA, the organisation decided to cancel the tournament.

The Eindhoven Box Cup is the only AIBA tournament in the Netherlands and is supported by the NOC * NSF. The tournament was also cancelled last year due to the corona crisis.

Thousands of fans cheer PSV squad ahead of national title

It was busy on Tuesday morning, at PSV’s training in the Philips Stadium. Normally training takes place at De Herdgang sports field, but because of the championship game on Sunday, that was deviated from. Thousands of supporters cheered coach Peter Bosz and the players.

The fans filled the north and west sides of the stadium. Especially children, along with their fathers, mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers, were there. It is estimated that between 8,000 and 9,000 supporters were present. The large turnout can be explained by the upcoming home game against Sparta. If PSV does not lose, the club will be champion of the premier league for the 25th time. The last time they took the title was in 2018.

Vacation

The May vacation is another reason for the ample attendance. Now that many families are free, they flock to the stadium. “Luuk de Jong is my favourite player, because he’s always ready to score”, a little boy wearing a PSV cap as he watches the soccer field intently, says. A grandfather with his two grandsons enjoys the spectacle. “I’ve been a fan since the time they just became champions three, four times in a row. It is to be hoped that this will happen again now”.

PSV’s full squad was present, except for midfielder Joey Veerman and a few injured players. The team trained with focus, despite all the attention. Afterwards, players handed out autographs.

GLOW organisers plan changes to light festival

0

In light of the coronavirus crisis, the organisers behind GLOW have announced plans to take a different approach this year.

GLOW, a multimedia light festival, is one of Eindhoven’s most popular it events. It attracts more than 750,000 visitors each year. This coming autumn will mark the festival’s fifteenth anniversary.

Although it is not yet clear which coronavirus regulations may still be in place in autumn, organisers do not expect GLOW to be able to take place in its usual format. This is mostly due to the large crowds that it attracts.

The organisers are thinking of alternative ways to conduct the festival that abides by social distancing regulations. They are considering projecting light shows into the air, as well as mobile artworks which drive past residential areas.

Organisers want to focus on exhibitions to unite people in Eindhoven. Having people shine a line outside their homes to illuminate Eindhoven at the same moment has been considered.

Whilst there are no final plans yet, organisers hope to make a decision by June. The festival will take place from 7 to 14 November.

Eindhoven capital of urban culture

0

Eindhoven is leading in urban culture; sports and graffiti art. This is what people visiting Emoves, the Eindhoven urban festival at Strijp-S and the Berekuil state.

“I’ve moved from Amsterdam to Veldhoven, specifically for my sport. When it comes to urban sports in the Netherlands, it’s possible to do it here,” says professional bmx’er Daniel Wedemeijer. His colleague Tom van de Boogaard also agrees that Eindhoven is a hotspot for bmx.

Eindhoven municipality implements specific policies for urban sports, including space for a bmx park, skateboarding spots like Area 51 and soon a new place for free runners.

Graffiti artists from the Netherlands and abroad are also given plenty orders to give tunnels a facelift with their own art. A festival such as Emoves also contributes to a growing urban scene in the Eindhoven region.

“Nowhere in the Netherlands is the scene as big as in Eindhoven. In the past, many break-dancers, skateboarders and graffiti artists came from this city. At this festival you will see a beautiful melting pot of all these disciplines, and outsiders can also get acquainted with urban culture,” says Dave van den Berg of Emoves.

Last weekend some 1500 urban athletes and graffiti artists from 40 countries visited Eindhoven. Every year, Emoves attracts around 25,000 visitors.

Breakdance WC to held soon

The 12th edition of the World B-Boy Classic will be held on Sunday, 8 September. The World B-Boy Classic forms part of EMOVES Urban Eindhoven.

The EMOVES festival has been split up into different weekends this year. Organisers, Paul van Dal and Niek Traa, are happy with this. “This split allowed us to choose the best dates and locations for our event,” says Paul.

“We did not have to take all the other sports and cultural events into account. These previously all took place together in one weekend. We can now fully focus on our event, and that results in an even stronger event.”

Top event

The World B-Boy Classic is one of the most prestigious breakdance competitions in the world. Every year, hundreds of dancers vie for the more than €10,000 prize money and a place in the Duo breakdancing Hall of Fame.

This championship was first held in 2009 in Rotterdam. It has called Eindhoven home since 2013. Ten qualifying rounds are held worldwide in countries such as Japan, Brazil, and South Korea.

The winners of these rounds will travel to Eindhoven. Here, they will do battle to see who will be crowned as the annual World B-Boy Classic champion. Previous year’s competitions were viewed more than 20 million times online.

During the day, qualifying rounds will be held at Dynamo. The World Final will start at 19:00 in the Effenaar. Although space is limited in the Effenaar, there are still a few places open.

Please visit www.worldbboyclassic.com for more information, and to purchase tickets.

Surreal cycling

0

Imagine pedalling on a bike in a sports centre, while finding yourself in a futuristic world or the Austrian mountains. You can, at Cycledome, a new attraction in Strijp-S.

A huge screen is located in residential block 59 on the former Philips premises. Cycledome is part of a new innovative gym in that block. Anything can be played on the screen, such as a special mountain ride or a surrealistic world. The idea behind it is that indoor cycling should be a lot of fun. A new dimension is added to the sport.

In addition to the large screen and the futuristic look, the bikes also light up. The colour says something about how hard you need to pedal. White, for example, is very light, while red requires a lot of pedalling.

According to the owner, a bicycle attraction like Cycledome is the first in the Benelux region.

Dutch Design Week: more tickets sold online, yet fewer visitors

1

Compared to last year’s Dutch Design Week (DDW), 50% more tickets were sold this year, while 4,000 fewer tickets were scanned at the cash register on Saturday. The organisers in Eindhoven find it difficult to tell whether this situation is related to the train problems.

DDW was off to a difficult start in the ‘Light City’ on Saturday morning. There were fewer trains to Eindhoven than usual due to the railway maintenance work and a collision. This caused long queues for visitors. However, a DDW spokeswoman said it is uncertain whether those “train problems” affected the number of visitors.

“The figures are clear – we sold more tickets online this year – 50% more than last year – but fewer tickets were scanned on Saturday. On the opening day, we scanned 11,000 tickets last year and 7,000 tickets this year. This indicates a difference of 36%. Is the poorer accessibility directly related to this situation, though? Who knows?”

Striking

The spokeswoman still finds the decrease striking: “The weather was good and therefore could not have caused it. The program offers exactly as much beauty as in other years. I don’t have a real explanation for the fewer number of visitors. Let’s just say that it’s striking that this coincides with the fact that fewer trains were running on Saturday.”

Clown Arno has had ‘hidden’ theatre in his backyard for 30 years

The little theatre in Arno Huibers’ backyard may be small, but that intimate touch is exactly what makes the performance. The “secret place of Eindhoven”, as Arno himself calls it, lends itself perfectly to his subdued clown acts.

“I’m not a clown with frills. On my nose I put a tiny clown nose and of course I have costumes”. Arno sits in his gypsy wagon where all sorts of clown stuff is displayed and which doubles as a cash register. “Most people really like that, too. That they enter the garden and step into a little paradise”.

Arno has been a clown himself for more than 40 years. As a tribute to the clowns of the past, he plays his show “Homage to the Clown”, in which he reviews various artists such as Charlie Chaplin, Rowan Atkinson and Slava Polunin. The performance can be admired at Arno’s Theater (theatre) in the Tongelre district starting in March.
