Free heaters and blankets to combat the cold

There was a run at the Catharinakerk in Eindhoven on Wednesday afternoon. Heaters, blankets and footmuffs were given away to poor people in front of the church. “It feels like a godsend,” says a woman visibly emotional.

She came by bike from Geldrop to be at the moment of distribution. Not only for herself, but also for an elderly friend who was unable to make the trip. “I’m in debt restructuring and that friend of mine h state pension. We don’t have two a cents to rub together, so this really feels like a gift from heaven”, she says while trying to hold back her tears. Another woman who has just acquired a footmuff and heater is less enthusiastic. “I think the initiative is great, don’t get me wrong. But it’s crazy that this is necessary in a country like the Netherlands.”

it’s a shame

The initiator, Hugo van Rooij of the (Z)onder Dak foundation, would also have preferred it not to be necessary. Normally he is committed to the homeless, but with the increasing number of residents struggling due to the high cost of living, he decided to launch this scheme. That idea came about three or four months ago. “I received a message from a family that was out in the cold, actually asking if I could do something for them. And that’s how the ball started rolling, but I didn’t expect it to become so big.”

In total, seven hundred heaters, blankets and footmuffs were distributed. Bought piece by piece by Van Rooij, partly with the help of donations. Those products were gone in no time, because people were waiting in long queues. “Someone just came and I had to disappoint them. In retrospect I think ‘Hugo, if you had bought more stuff, you could have helped more people’.”

However, joy reigns among the crowd. ‘Hugo, thanks’, one can hear everywhere. “Without this heater I would have been out in the cold. I hoped it wouldn’t freeze too much, because the pipes would also freeze soon. Then I’d be in even deeper trouble, because I can’t afford to have repairs done. So I’m very happy with the heater.”

The memorable moment was celebrated with snacks, drinks and speeches. “They have had an integration course and learned the language. Let’s make this a special day too”, said deputy mayor Rik Thijs.

“I never thought I would give up my Indian nationality for a Dutch passport. But that is happening now. I have felt very welcome in my environment, with friends and colleagues”,  says one of the 906 new Dutch people who have found a place in Eindhoven.

No skating rink in town, but tall gift tower

Anyone who has looked around Eindhoven’s 18 Septemberplein has probably noticed something. Since this week there is a real gift tower. With the initiative, entrepreneurs’ association Stichting Binnenstad Eindhoven (foundation downtown Eindhoven, SBE) wants to attract more people to the city centre.

It is something else than the traditional Christmas market. In this way, the SBE still wants to end the year in a festive way with the “Wrap up the Year” campaign. “In Eindhoven, we are always a bit stubborn. The city will be wrapped up with Eindhoven gift paper this December, so to speak”, Mariette Vetter of SBE explains.

Eyecatcher
According to Vetter, the ten-metre-high gift tower financed by entrepreneurs themselves is therefore intended as an eye-catcher to direct people to the stores. “You can see the structure standing from a great distance, for example when coming from the train station. You can’t go inside the tower, although two parcels contain viewing boxes with a winter landscape”.

Skating rink
Within the “Wrap up the Year” campaign, there is no room for a Christmas market and ice skating rink. “We thought that was a bit outdated and therefore not appropriate for Eindhoven. The Christmas atmosphere will certainly be there with lighting, colourful shop windows, a music programme and other activities in the city. Something we wanted to implement before, but was resisted by the corona virus”, Vetter said.

According to Vetter, the energy crisis has nothing to do with these innovative plans, although that of course plays a role. “An ice rink naturally guzzles energy, so we don’t have that cost this year. Although we are putting more money into the mood lighting than other years because of the energy crisis”.

Exhibit at city hall expresses support for protesters Iran

A photo exhibition by Iranian photographer Shaghayegh Moradiannejad has opened at Eindhoven city hall. With the exhibition, the organisers want to show support for the protesters in Iran who are now campaigning against the Islamic regime and for more freedom.

Moradiannejad portrays the lives of women who often lived and died in desolation, for example by setting themselves on fire. The exhibition highlights the pain experienced by many women in Iran, Iraq and Syria.

The exhibition was organised by Stichting Samen voor Gezondheid van Vrouwen (foundation together for women’s health), Werkgroep Eindhoven (working group Eindhoven) and Saskia Blom, to show support for the protest in Iran for human rights, democracy and freedom. Earlier, a projection at city hall also showed solidarity with the Iranians in resistance.

The exhibition will be on display until the end of December.

No skating rink in the city this year: tall present tower instead

Anyone who has looked around the 18 Septemberplein in Eindhoven has probably noticed something. This week, a real present tower has been erected. With this initiative, entrepreneurs’ association Stichting Binnenstad Eindhoven (SBE) wants to attract more people to the city centre.

It is something different than the traditional Christmas market. The SBE wants to end the year in a festive way with the ‘Wrap up the Year’ campaign. “In Eindhoven we like to do things a bit differently. This December, the city has been wrapped with Eindhoven gift paper” said Mariette Vetter of SBE.

Eye catcher

The ten-metre-high present tower, which was financed by the entrepreneurs themselves, is intended, according to Vetter, as an eye-catcher to guide people to the shops. “You can see the structure from a great distance, for example when you come from the station. You can’t go inside the tower, but diorama boxes with a winter landscape can be viewed within two of the presents.”

Skating rink

Within the ‘Wrap up the Year’ campaign there is no room for a Christmas market and an ice rink. “We thought an ice rink was a bit outdated and therefore not suitable for Eindhoven. The Christmas atmosphere will certainly be there with lighting, colourful shop windows, a music programme and other activities in the city. This was something we wanted to do before, but was postponed due to corona virus.” said Vetter.

According to Vetter, the energy crisis has nothing to do with these innovative plans, although that does of course play a role. “An ice rink uses copious amounts of energy, so we won’t have those costs this year. Although we are putting more money into mood lighting than in previous years due to the energy crisis.”

Eindhoven breakdance group win world title in Japan

The breakdance group The Ruggeds set a good example to Louis van Gaal’s football team last weekend. At the World Championships Breaking in Japan, the Eindhoven dance crew won all prizes.

In Okinawa, the Eindhoven breakdancers competed against teams from all over the world during the 25th edition of ‘Battle Of The Year’. The dance crews competed for the titles ‘best showcase’ and winner of the battles. Both prizes were won by The Ruggeds from Eindhoven.

Justin Bieber

It is not the first time that The Ruggeds were successful. For example, the crew danced in a video clip by Justin Bieber, they were in the final of NBC’s World of Dance and they will be in Dutch theatres until the end of this year with their performance Decypher.

Patrick won Het Groot Dictee: ‘I’ve always had a love for language’

It is not entirely a surprise that Patrick van Aarle (47) from Eindhoven won ‘Het Groot Dictee’ (the big dictation) this weekend. All his life he has had a love for language. “When I still lived with my parents, I already participated in the dictation”.

With only one error, he managed to leave Volkskrant (newspaper) columnist Karin Sitalsing and VVD (people’s party for freedom and democracy) MP Judith Tielen behind, both with two errors. Patrick’s one mistake was in a small corner. “I got the word ijzertijd (Iron Age) wrong”, Patrick says. “It had to be without capitals. I wrote it with a capital letter. Those are the words where I still doubt. Just like the middeleeuwen (Middle Ages), for example”.

Things could go wrong very quickly, according to Patrick. “The dictation started with the title Groningen is zó (Groningen is fine). She read it so emphatically that I added an accent, which was right. So it could have gone wrong in the title”.

“I’ve always had a love for language”. But it remains a hobby, Patrick says. “I used to be good at languages. Back in the 90s, when I was still living with my parents, I already participated in Het Groot Dictee. But I’m also good with exact numbers. I studied physics and meanwhile I have been a teacher at the Gymnasium Beekvliet in Sint-Michielsgestel for 20 years now”.

Draw
So many talents. However, there are also certain weaknesses. “If there’s something I’m not good at, it’s drawing. Even if I have to draw something in class, for example a little car, the students already laugh at me. I’ve also wanted to do odd jobs around the house for a while, but I’m not very good at it either”, the smiling Patrick says.

Eindhoven touch
Although the dictation took place in Groningen, there was still an Eindhoven element to be found. “When I’m in Groningen, I want to take something Eindhoven with me. I wore a shirt with the well-known light bulb. The skyline of Eindhoven could be seen in the light bulb. Some students had already noticed that I was wearing a colorful shirt again”.

‘Grand’ anniversary week for Waalre100 will cost quarter million

The Municipality of Waalre wants to pay €160,000 to organise the municipality’s centennial anniversary, which will be celebrated in 2023.

The residents’ need to celebrate also became clear at a brainstorming evening at which seventy delegates participated like residents, associations, companies and other stakeholders.

Festival week
In addition, there was a lot of enthusiasm for a big celebration, and a real “grand anniversary week” should be organised, for which the municipality could dig deep into its pockets. But the municipality does not consider an overly lavish celebration appropriate, given the difficult economic-financial situation in which many people find themselves.

Nevertheless, the municipality is planning a celebration worth €250,000. €90,000 would then have to be put in by sponsors. If that amount is not put in, there will be a “minimum variant” of the party. The city council expects to say in the short term whether the sponsorship money will come in.

Cost
Most of the €160,000 the municipality is putting into the project, €90,000 euros, will go to a project manager. The activities may cost about €50,000 and €20,000 will be set aside for marketing and communication, among other things.
