Come and learn about the Dutch schools in Meerhoven

More likely than not, the number one issue for parents moving to a new country is finding a school for their child that fits best their child and family’s needs.

It can become very stressful to learn about the new educational system and regulations and local habits. Not to mention practicalities related to an ordinary school day and, of course, the language issue. This is why Meerhoven Internationals Platform is organising an Education Event on Saturday, 23 June, between 09:30 and 12:30.

They are doing this in cooperation with local schools and kindergarten. The purpose of the event is to provide information about the Dutch educational system and childcare to international parents living in the Meerhoven area. During the event representatives of Meerhoven primary schools, ‘t Slingertouw, Startbaan, and the Korein Kinderplein nursery school will all hold presentations in English about their child-care and child education facilities. There will then be an opportunity for questions.

Korein Kinderplein has very generously agreed to provide free childcare during the whole event for those who will bring their children along. If you would like to attend, please register with the Meerhoven Internationals Platform on their facebook page or by emailing internationals@meerhoven.nl.

The venue still has to be determined.

Rabobank Eindhoven-Veldhoven and Holland Expat Center South would like to invite you on a walking tour of one of Eindhoven’s most bustling areas: Strijp-S, T & R!

During this event, you will go on a 1.5-hour walking tour of these areas, guided by an English-speaking tour guide. Along the way, there will be a stop for some treats, and you will end with drinks and snacks.

Through this event you can get to know Eindhoven better and meet other internationals living in the area.

Welding and printing at textile market

Het Weverij Museum (The Weaving Museum) in Geldrop will hold the Artistic Textile Market next weekend, on Saturday, 9 June.

Everything that has anything to do with textiles can be found there. All kinds of textiles are sold on the market, but there are also activities and workshops. Visitors can weld or work as a goldsmith themselves.

In addition, there are ‘Sashiko’ workshops. This is a centuries-old Japanese textile technique. The Geldrop Music Corps (GMC) and the Kunstkwartier (Arts Quarter) music group will take care of the music. Register for workshops here.

Stadswandelpark to be converted into golf course

The money collected during the 17th edition of Parkgolf will go to Inloophuis De Eik (The Oak Centre) and Stichting Leergeld (the Leergeld Foundation).

For the benefit of the event, a golf course is being built between the preHistoric Village and the Van Abbe Museum in the Stadswandelpark. It is a full 18-holes course. It starts in the Ton Smits park at the preHistoric Village and runs via the Dommelplantsoen, the Hornemannplantsoen and the Anne Frankplantsoen to the Van Abbe Museum.

It is an event for the adventurous golfer. The grass is not cut with millimeter accuracy as is done on a real golf course. The Den Elzent and De Keersop Lions Clubs are organising Parkgolf. Under the motto ‘we serve’ they play at the golf course in Eindhoven every year.

The 17th edition of the event takes place on Saturday, 22 September,  and registrations are now open.

Party in the Park

We hope you found out that Eindhoven has quite a few nice public parks. Especially with this tropical weather.

One of the most central ones is the Stadswandelpark (just to manage expectations, it is not called Central Park). This is a nice relaxing venue to visit, stroll around, have a drink, a workout, or just relax on the grass, so if you haven’t visited it already, we can certainly recommend it, just by yourself or bring your family. Also note that the park is almost seamless connected with the Genneper Parken, so if you like green spaces, close to your home, this is the place.

To motivate you even more, this weekend (June 1-3) is probably one of the best times to visit it, as long as you like music, wine, beer or food.. and frankly which Eindhoven News reader doesn’t. There is a family-friendly festival called Slow! Park from Friday to Sunday (check the website for more details), where you can visit the park, and also taste and drink wines, all kinds of food, a biergarten and much more.

So check it out, there is something for everyone, even the very health conscious ones, and enjoy it, alone, with your friends or family. Or try to meet up with some of the members of our community, to share this great Park-experience.

Dynamo Metalfest; full day of new and old heavy metal bands

On July 14, 2018 the 4th edition of the Dynamo Metalfest will take place at the ‘IJssportcentrum’ (the semi covered ice-skating rink).

It’s a friendly Heavy Metal festival with a mix of some bigger names, iconic older bands, and upcoming new ones.

The Metalfest is the legacy of the legendary Dynamo Open Air (DOA) festival. This festival (organized by the heavy metal department of youth society Dynamo) started as a free festival in 1986, behind the original Dynamo building on a parking lot at Smalle Haven. After the first few editions with 7000-12000 spectators, the festival outgrew the space and moved to the ‘IJssportcentrum’ where it expanded further, and started to ask a modest contribution from the visitors.

 

Also that venue was outgrown, so it moved to the Welschap airbase (Eindhoven Airport), where it became a 3-day festival, with huge camping ground and over 100.000 visitors. It became national news when the many visitors (from all over the world but many from Germany), congested the roads around the airbase and north of Eindhoven, which resulted in massive traffic jams, that lasted over 24 hours. Some people who were stuck started their BBQ’s next to the motorway. By that time the festival was not only the favourite of the many visitors, but also of many of the bands, who played in local pubs in the area the days just before or after the festival.

After those legendary years at the airbase, that made Eindhoven temporarily the capital of the Heavy Metal world, the festival moved to different places, mostly close to Eindhoven, but also around Nijmegen. Big and promising bands kept performing, many of them on several editions. And now its back in Eindhoven, still against a modest price, to give you all the opportunity to see some great rocking bands, experience the relaxed atmosphere and perhaps sense some of its glorious past.

URE turns 15, to reveal new racing car

On Friday, 1 June, the ‘Brainport Eindhoven Racing Day’ will be held. It will be hosted by University Racing Eindhoven (URE).

The URE hopes to attract old and young to 18 Septemberplein, in the city centre, on that day. They plan to reveal their latest electric racing car, the URE13 – a combination of speed, engineering, and racing – to the public at large. In this way, the Brainport region will showcase their prowess in the automotive field as well.

The URE13 is considered to be the younger brother of the Formula E race car. It was constructed by a team of Tu/e students in only one year. People are welcome to come and see this new race car and witness a demonstration, from between 18:30 and 19:00.

URE turns 15

URE is also 15 years old this year. To celebrate this anniversary, some of their previous cars can be seen in action again.

URE was founded in September 2003 by a group of six Tu/e students. The faculty of Mechanical Engineering wanted students to be better prepared for the industry. In answer, a team was founded to design a racecar to compete in the Formula Student/SAE competition. The team was established under the name Formula Student Racing Team Eindhoven (FSRTE). Their first car (pictured above) was named the FSRTE01.

They were not able to complete the car in time for the event, but a racing team was born. Since then they have built 14 vehicles, including the lastest URE13.

Designs changes over the years

In 2007, when they changed their name to URE, the team had grown to 61 team members. The URE03 finished a German endurance race for the first time. It ended in 13th place.

The year 2010 heralded an important change for the URE car designs. The URE05 was converted into the URE’s first electric race car, the URE05e. This new era brought new challenges, but because of its sound design, the electric car had a great first season. It reached an overall third, second, and first place in the UK, Germany, and Austria respectively.

Since then, URE has adjusted their designs to enable their cars to achieve top performances. The URE08 was lighter than its predecessor by 45 kg. In 2015, the team developed their first four wheel-driven car, the URE10.

Bustling beer activities in Brabant

Throughout the whole of Noord-Brabant, catering establishments and breweries, among others, organize many beer activities during the Week of the Dutch Beer. From Thursday May 24th to Sunday, June 3rd, enthusiasts will discover the versatility of Dutch beer. During beer tasting sessions, beer dinners, master classes of beer brewing, a beer festival and guided tours in breweries.

On May 24th the Week of the Dutch Beer is traditionally opened at the Nederlands Bierproeffestival (Dutch Beer tasting festival) in The Hague. It will be closed with the Dutch Brewery Days from Friday 1st to Sunday June 3rd. Over 100 breweries throughout the country then open their doors to the public. Every organization can join the Week of the Dutch Beer by organizing a beer-related activity. For an overview of all activities and more information about participation, see the website below.

Henri Reuchlin, chairman of the Week of the Dutch Beer: “With the Week of the Dutch Beer, we celebrate the buoyant Dutch beer industry. And the consumer can experience all those fine beers.” Cafés, restaurants, breweries, liquor stores and other organizations provide every day for various beer-related activities throughout the country, during the week. From special beer dinners and tastings to beer pub quizzes, workshops and beer walks and cruises.

India festival in city centre on Saturday

The India Festival will take place in Eindhoven city centre on Saturday 26 May.

The festival will feature stalls selling Indian clothing and snacks, as well as henna artists and a philosopher. Dancers and singers will perform on a large stage.

Indian guru Lokanath Swami, a popular spiritual leader in India, will also sing at the festival.

“People come from everywhere to visit this festival”, says co-organiser Sundari Priya. “This is the largest open-air Indian festival in western Europe”, Priya adds.

Every visitor at the festival will receive a free vegetarian meal, in accordance with Indian tradition. The festival starts at 11:00 on Saturday.
