No limit on imagination at Valkenswaard Corso

What particularly lingers after the seventieth edition of the Valkenswaard Corso? The sweltering heat along the route, the efforts of first aid and the fire brigade to relieve a participant who had become unwell, the beautiful floats and extras and, of course, the Hazestraat float, which once again emerged as the big winner with Botanica Fantasia.

Designer Frank Schooleman and ‘his’ builders not only came first overall, but also won the Craftsmanship Award, the Parade Award and the Innovation Award. Consequently, there was some grumbling during the award ceremony. Neighbourhood Hazestraat has been calling the shots with brilliant creations for years. However, it regularly faces stiff competition from the creations of Stadsebergen, Kerkakkers and Oud Dommelen.

In their verdict, the jury used words like “emotion”, “goose bumps”, “innovative”, “imaginative” and “a feast for the eyes”. Then it is not surprising that the Hazestraat group was number one again. Spectators were also impressed by the splendour of the colours, the details and the use of recycled materials. Think wheelbarrow, laundry basket, plastic cups and plates and flower pots.

Tastes differ

In the Graafschap group, there was mostly relief. One of the participants became unwell due to the heat and had to be taken off the wagon by the fire brigade. The first-aiders present ensured that the woman recovered quickly, but due to the inconvenience, the procession still stood still for almost an hour. “We are all very shocked, because you don’t expect something like that,” said one of the builders of Graafschap. “Fortunately, everything is fine with her and she is now at home.”

Kerkakkers, Stadsebergen and Crescendo eventually had to accept the fact that they had again put in an excellent performance, but in the end only one could be the winner: Hazestraat.

Most striking perhaps was that the Dommeldal float received the Audience Award, but finished eleventh in the jury’s final results.

It proved that the tastes differ between people.

PSV starts new season with Super-cup match in Eindhoven

0

PSV, the proud Dutch football champions will kick-off their season with a match for the Dutch super-cup, against cupwinner Feyenoord, just before the regular Dutch league starts. As Dutch champion, they are allowed to play it at their home turf, the Philips stadium, on Saturday August 4th at 18.00.

While the World-Cup is getting into the final stages, PSV is working hard behind the scenes to build the organization and their squad to make an attempt to reach the play-offs of the Champions League and to prolong their Dutch league title. Its been a turbulent couple of months for PSV, several important staff and even head- coach Philip Cocu, got lured away by teams from wealthier leagues, due to their great achievements. Also some of their best players moved, or may move on, to bigger leagues.

Of course the management has been, and still is working hard for proper replacements, of which the most noticeable (but not least likely) is the new head-coach Mark van Bommel. The previous coach of the U19 (youth) team, that also won the Dutch title, will take over from Cocu, after being assistant to his father in law, that has been coaching Australia during the world cup. Apart from a promising past as an (assistant) coach, he has a glorious past as a football player, for PSV winning several league titles, cups and playing many champions league matches. He also was successful with FC Barcelona, AC Milan and Bayern Munchen. Hence very experienced and all in all a man with a real PSV heart, with true passion and skill to be a worthy replacement of the successful Cocu.

Also the technical manager, the successful Marcel Brands who deserved a move to Everton, has been replaced, as well as the director of the PSV academy and various youth coaches. The good news is that PSV found worthy replacements, often by ex-players, of which we are welcoming home again, like the head of the youth academy, ex youth and assistant coach and former player, Ernest Faber.

So how well PSV will do is a difficult question to answer, especially seeing the many changes so far, and uncertainty what the exact squad will look like. We do know that they have an interesting program of practice matches, most noticeable, the home match against Valencia on July 28. So keep an eye on their agenda, and try to visit one of their matches or even a training at the beautiful Herdgang training ground, that is currently being further upgraded. Or come to see them compete for their first price of the new season and win the supercup (also know as Johann Cruyff schaal). As most games are sold out, this is a good opportunity.. and grab a drink on the way to the stadium in any of the nice bars in its proximity.

A rose for every grave in Mierlo’s defaced cemetery

0

On Thursday, an organisation called the Brabant Pacte des Cygnes society will place more than 600 roses in the military cemetery in Mierlo. A rose will be laid on every grave.

This group is committed to the province of Brabant’s cultural heritage. They are placing the roses to honour the region’s WWII liberators. Last week, the cemetery was covered with graffiti. A 36-year-old man has been arrested for this.

“The roses will be laid to obliterate the disrespectful and hateful words written”, the group says. The laying of the roses will start at 11:00.

Mierlo linked to Christian Dior?

Mierlo has a new hero who puts the town’s history as a textile manufacturer back in the spotlight. He seems even to have had contact with Christian Dior.

The name of this new hero is Piet Manders, and the Weverijmuseum in Geldrop has made an exhibition about the man and his work. Manders (1928-1986) was an industrial technical draftsman who, with his team, designed fabrics for famous international fashion designers such as Nina Ricci, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior. The Weverijmuseum stumbled on Piet’s work more or less by accident, through an e-mail from a museum in Zeeland.

Didn’t suit their collection

They offered a fabric collection that did not fit into their collection. “Since I was going to spend my holiday in Zeeland anyway, I drove by”, Bert Vermeer, director of the Weverijmuseum Geldrop, says. “Then it turned out to be a collection from a certain Piet Manders, who also turned out to have roots in Mierlo”.

And that can also be seen in the street scene because Lenssen and Manders’ fashion shops are all family. Piet never had a glamorous life, nor was he famous. But he did leave his mark on the international fashion world.

“And Mierlo should be proud of that”, Bert Vermeer says. That is why the exhibition on Manders is on display until September in Weverijmuseum Geldrop.

DDW is back in full swing: exhibitions at almost ninety locations

0

The Dutch Design Week will be physically running at full speed again next month. Last year, the major Eindhoven design event held an online edition due to the corona pandemic, but that is not necessary this year.

This past spring, the organisation already announced that it was aiming for a physical event. That expectation is now also coming true, with the extra relaxation that will take effect next Saturday. Only DDW Music, with dozens of pop concerts in various venues, will not take place. However, there are exhibitions, workshops, and network meetings spread over about ninety locations in the city.

This year, designs will also reflect on the corona crisis, and addressing the question of where society is heading after this unusual period. As in every edition, experimental ideas from designers will be on display, as well as concrete solutions to social issues.

Ambassadors of the event this year are former Chief Government Architect Floris Alkemade and designer Christien Meindertsma, who studied at the Design Academy in Eindhoven.

The DDW runs from 16 to 24 October.

Member of Parliament opens new exhibition Cornelis le Mair

0

Artist Cornelis le Mair will be exhibiting his latest work in the VDL Art gallery in the Heuvel Galerie in the coming weeks. VVD MP Daan de Kort opened the exhibition last weekend.

The VVD MP, former Alderman in Veldhoven, still regularly visits the region for public activities. He finds it important to be visible in this region, as the only MP from South-East Brabant.

The exhibition of Le Mair shows mainly recent works by the Eindhoven artist, who is known for his style that contains many style elements of the ‘Great Masters’. Both portraits and still lifes will be on display.

VDL Art is the gallery of Daniëlle Verschuren and Jan van de Loo and has no relationship with the industrial group VDL. The work of Verschuren and Van de Loo can also be seen and purchased in the gallery.

The exhibition of Cornelis Le Mair is on view until 31 October.

Calling all ‘green fingers’ to the Groenexpo Bloem & Tuin

People with green fingers can indulge themselves at the Gulbergen estate in Nuenen until the end of the week. The ‘Groenexpo Bloem & Tuin’ will be held there for the 28th time. There are about 80 stalls scattered around the site with colourful flowers, mermaids and other garden accessories.

A visitor says : “I get my ideas here, but I just buy in the store. Saves a lot of lugging.” Better put on your walking shoes if you want to see all the latest gardening gadgets. If you want to see all the stalls, you have to walk almost two kilometers. “It really is a day out for people,” says co-organiser Arvid Schellens. “Visitors come from far and wide to visit the market. Mainly people from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, but also from other countries.”

Competition with Keukenhof?

Will tourists from now on be eager to see this expo instead of Keukenhof? “Well, I’ve never been to Keukenhof, but it’s true that a lot of people come here – young and old,” said the co-organiser.

The Groenexpo Tuin & Bloem can be visited until Sunday. The organization expects to welcome about 40,000 visitors

Animals no longer welcome at Tilburg fair

Animals can no longer be used for entertainment at the Tilburg fair. This was decided by the Tilburg city council on Monday evening. The Party for the Animals (PvdD) had submitted a motion with six other parties to ban animals from the fair. The warm summers in particular are increasingly causing heat stress, which is bad for animal welfare.

The ban on animals at the fair means an end to pony rides, a tradition many children in Tilburg grew up with. Muizenstad (The city of mice) is no longer allowed at the fair either. Muizenstad left the Tilburg fair in 2019 because of a video on YouTube. The video showed animal activists questioning the suitability of the environment for the mice during the extremely hot summer. As a result, the mice were no longer allowed at the fair.

A local party (LST) and a few other political parties  are against the ban on animals at the fair. According to LST, the ponies are well cared for at the fair and banning animals from the fair is “the height of folly”. Another party jokingly hoped that an fairground ride called ‘The caterpillar’ could remain.

Contract until 2024

VVD alderman Maarten van Asten does not agree with the motion, but is carrying it out because of the council majority. He does think that the municipality of Tilburg should adhere to the contracts that are still running with pony fair operators. These will run until 2024. He also notes that the operator who keeps ponies at the fair already left them at home during a number of warm summers.

Research into animal welfare

The city council will also investigate whether a ban on using animals for entertainment can be included in the events policy. The Party for the Animals would like to see that no animals are used at all during events in Tilburg.  However, they then would need to reconsider Sinterklaas’s horse and the sheep in the nativity scene. The city council does not want to go that far, but they will investigate whether a ban is possible in the long term.

No skating rink in the city this year: tall present tower instead

Anyone who has looked around the 18 Septemberplein in Eindhoven has probably noticed something. This week, a real present tower has been erected. With this initiative, entrepreneurs’ association Stichting Binnenstad Eindhoven (SBE) wants to attract more people to the city centre.

It is something different than the traditional Christmas market. The SBE wants to end the year in a festive way with the ‘Wrap up the Year’ campaign. “In Eindhoven we like to do things a bit differently. This December, the city has been wrapped with Eindhoven gift paper” said Mariette Vetter of SBE.

Eye catcher

The ten-metre-high present tower, which was financed by the entrepreneurs themselves, is intended, according to Vetter, as an eye-catcher to guide people to the shops. “You can see the structure from a great distance, for example when you come from the station. You can’t go inside the tower, but diorama boxes with a winter landscape can be viewed within two of the presents.”

Skating rink

Within the ‘Wrap up the Year’ campaign there is no room for a Christmas market and an ice rink. “We thought an ice rink was a bit outdated and therefore not suitable for Eindhoven. The Christmas atmosphere will certainly be there with lighting, colourful shop windows, a music programme and other activities in the city. This was something we wanted to do before, but was postponed due to corona virus.” said Vetter.

According to Vetter, the energy crisis has nothing to do with these innovative plans, although that does of course play a role. “An ice rink uses copious amounts of energy, so we won’t have those costs this year. Although we are putting more money into mood lighting than in previous years due to the energy crisis.”

Eindhoven welcomes some 900 new ‘Nederlanders’

0

906 Eindhoven residents from 86 different countries received Dutch nationality this year. During a naturalisation meeting, they were put in the spotlight in the Muziekgebouw.

The new residents of the city come from all corners of the world. The three countries where most new residents who received a Dutch passport this year have their origin are Syria (174), India (162) and Turkey (55).

The memorable moment was celebrated with snacks, drinks and speeches. “They have had an integration course and learned the language. Let’s make this a special day too”, said deputy mayor Rik Thijs.

“I never thought I would give up my Indian nationality for a Dutch passport. But that is happening now. I have felt very welcome in my environment, with friends and colleagues”,  says one of the 906 new Dutch people who have found a place in Eindhoven.
