Liberator of Eindhoven Joe Cattini surprised with two awards: ‘That’s too much honor’

Turning 100 is already special, but for Briton Joe Cattini that milestone got an extra twist. One of the last remaining liberators of Eindhoven was surprised on his birthday with two awards by a delegation from the city he liberated. “That’s too much honor.”

Not only has Cattini been named an honorary citizen of the city, he is also the winner of the very first Local Hero Award.

Surprise

In the company of friends and family, Cattini celebrated his 100th birthday in his homeland last Tuesday. It was actually the intention that the Briton would be at a concert specially organized for him in Eindhoven a few days earlier, but he had to miss out due to his fragile health.

So an Eindhoven delegation traveled to England to put him in the spotlight, and not without reason. In September 1944, as a young boy, Cattini fought to liberate Eindhoven from the Nazis. That this was not devoid of dangers, is once again apparent from the speech of mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem.

“Joe Cattini was on the front line time and time again. He was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. His friend next to him was fatally injured by shrapnel, but Joe was not injured.”

The war continued

Cattini is not only praised for his struggle on the battlefield, but also for his efforts after the war. For the British, the Second World War did not end after the collapse of the Third Reich in May 1945.

Cattini has regularly visited Eindhoven in recent years. He attended the traditional torch parade last September and visited schools to pass on the story of the war to new generations. “That was always one of the conditions when he came to the Netherlands,” explains the chairman of the 18 September Foundation, Peter Kemp. “He insisted on going to schools to tell his story.”

Honorary citizen

Cattini has been rewarded with two awards for his participation in the bloody battle for the Eindhoven region and his unbridled commitment to make young people understand the value of freedom. He has been granted honorary citizenship of the city. This brings the Englishman to an illustrious list that includes football coach Guus Hiddink, swimmer Pieter van den Hoogenband and former mayors Rein Welschen and Rob van Gijzel.

The Local Hero Award was also presented to Cattini. He is the namesake and face of that prize. From now on, every two years, the award will be given to a young person who has shown exceptional drive and determination for a cause, belief or individual, despite setbacks.

250 children compete in schools chess championship

Supreme concentration during the chess championship at primary school ‘t Palet. More than 250 students took part in the district chess championships for primary schools on Wednesday.

The students are very enthusiastic about the tournament. A total of 58 teams from 22 different schools participated. “Chess is so much fun because you have to think carefully,” says one of the participants. In teams of four, the participants played matches of up to 25 minutes against each other.

Popular

Kevin Sijmens, teacher of ‘t Palet, also notices that chess is very popular among his students. “We give after-school chess lessons here at school. About forty students are already taking part in this, but it is so popular that there is even a waiting list. We are therefore going to see if we can add another class.”

Championships

The championship matches started at 1.30 pm and the prize-giving ceremony will take place around 5.30 pm. The winners go on to the Brabant Chess Championships. “I hope we win, but I really don’t think so.”

Treasure hunt during children’s holiday week with Mister Rick

Find treasures with a magnet or metal detector. There is plenty to do during Meneer (mister) Rick’s children’s holiday week on the sports fields of the High Tech Campus.

“I really enjoy doing things with children that they have never done before,” says Rick de Wit, founder of Meneer Rick. Today the children go on a treasure hunt, paint mugs and go supping. “It’s nice, because I sit at home all day doing nothing,” says one of the children.

Treasures

Special finds are made during magnet fishing. “I found a coin from 1962. I think it’s from England,” says a boy. All the children have to do is toss a rope with a magnet attached into the water. “All metal sticks to the magnet and you can fish for things,” says another boy. “I have already found 5 cents, a stone and a metal bar.” The metal detectors are also used to search for treasures. “We found something really big. We think it’s a barbecue grill,” says one of the treasure hunters.

Sleep

For the first time, the children can also sleep in a tent. “It’s nice, but cold,” says one of the children. “There is also a lot of noise. Especially from the boys. They keep throwing cookies against our tent, so we sleep in another tent,” adds another girl. The children can choose what time they go to sleep. “We didn’t sleep until 12:30 last night, but we’re not tired yet.”

The children’s holiday week lasts until Thursday.

Concerti Fetti back in Eindhoven

Jan Smit, Django Wagner and Jan Biggel: these were some of the artists who performed on Wednesday evening in a full Indoor Sports Center during Concerti Fetti. The festival for people with disabilities is back in Eindhoven. A crowd of 4500 visitors sang and danced along.

The festive evening, organised by the Gehandicapten Concert Eindhoven foundation, has since become a household name in the city. The 20th edition was held in 2019, at the time still in the Beursgebouw.

“Visitors only need three notes and two words to sing along to the songs at the top of their lungs. They enjoy it as if their birthday and carnival fall on the same day,” explains Meranda de Laat of the organisation.

‘Nothing is more fun than this’

More than 100 volunteers contributed to the realisation of Concerti Fetti. “Seeing them smile: that’s what we do it for. It’s incredibly rewarding work.”

Ronde van Waalre prepares for the heat

The starting gun for the Tour of Waalre will sound next Saturday. The 23rd edition of the running event has new routes and takes the summer heat into account with all kinds of precautions.

Precautions

Due to the high temperatures this weekend, extra precautions have been taken in consultation with the GGD. Additional water stations have been arranged and the youth run has been shortened by a lap. “We try to remind people that you have to pay close attention to each other and that if things don’t work out, you have to stop.”

Greenery

“What is special about this running race is that you can quickly get from the centre of Waalre to the green countryside,” says Arjen Verhiel, board member of the organization and trainer. Unlike last year, there is a different route; the start is now in front of the Old Tower and no longer in the Market. “We did this for safety. This way, the route runs through less traffic. In addition, there are more long straight lanes, so we also expect faster times”.

Youth

In addition to the Ronde van Waalre, there is also the youth run. “We invite all primary schools and can also win a prize,” says Arjen. “In the youth-run, the prize does not go to the fastest runner but to the school with the most registrations. This is because we do not think it is important that the children set records, but that they participate.”

There are 130 registrations for the Ronde van Waalre, approximately the same number of runners participate in the youth run. It is also possible to register on the day itself. Arjen expects people to do that less quickly this year due to the warm weather.

No limit on imagination at Valkenswaard Corso

What particularly lingers after the seventieth edition of the Valkenswaard Corso? The sweltering heat along the route, the efforts of first aid and the fire brigade to relieve a participant who had become unwell, the beautiful floats and extras and, of course, the Hazestraat float, which once again emerged as the big winner with Botanica Fantasia.

Designer Frank Schooleman and ‘his’ builders not only came first overall, but also won the Craftsmanship Award, the Parade Award and the Innovation Award. Consequently, there was some grumbling during the award ceremony. Neighbourhood Hazestraat has been calling the shots with brilliant creations for years. However, it regularly faces stiff competition from the creations of Stadsebergen, Kerkakkers and Oud Dommelen.

In their verdict, the jury used words like “emotion”, “goose bumps”, “innovative”, “imaginative” and “a feast for the eyes”. Then it is not surprising that the Hazestraat group was number one again. Spectators were also impressed by the splendour of the colours, the details and the use of recycled materials. Think wheelbarrow, laundry basket, plastic cups and plates and flower pots.

Tastes differ

In the Graafschap group, there was mostly relief. One of the participants became unwell due to the heat and had to be taken off the wagon by the fire brigade. The first-aiders present ensured that the woman recovered quickly, but due to the inconvenience, the procession still stood still for almost an hour. “We are all very shocked, because you don’t expect something like that,” said one of the builders of Graafschap. “Fortunately, everything is fine with her and she is now at home.”

Kerkakkers, Stadsebergen and Crescendo eventually had to accept the fact that they had again put in an excellent performance, but in the end only one could be the winner: Hazestraat.

Most striking perhaps was that the Dommeldal float received the Audience Award, but finished eleventh in the jury’s final results.

It proved that the tastes differ between people.

Dijsselbloem explains in speech about incorrect names war memorial

Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem gave a speech during the commemoration on Stadhuisplein in Eindhoven about the war and how black and white it was at that time. And how conspiracy theories were already being spread and manipulation was taking place at the time.

The Mayor is mainly talking about the war memorial on Stadhuisplein, which was placed in 2013 and was discredited in April this year due to the incorrect names. “The decision to adapt the monument is not an easy one. A situation like this is never completely black or white”.

It is of course no coincidence that the war memorial on Stadhuisplein was adjusted just in time for the commemoration on 18 September. The 22 people with a ‘wrong past’ who are on the monument will be removed. In addition, 160 names of people who actually belonged on the monument are added. “This was a difficult decision. A situation is never completely right or wrong. Sometimes we find ourselves in a gray area”, Dijsselbloem said in his speech.

Conscription

For example, there is the name of a German man who came to live in Eindhoven with his parents at a young age. At the age of eighteen he was drafted into the German army. As a German he had to serve in the army and he had no choice, even though he didn’t want that at all. A refusal to serve would otherwise cost him dearly”.

Convicted

“His name therefore remains on the monument and that does not apply to an Eindhoven police officer who helped round up and deport Jews during the war. He was also convicted for this after the war. At the same time, the police officer helped people who were resisting. He told them when they would be arrested, so that they could escape in time. So the police officer did right and wrong things, and is not on the monument”, the Mayor says.

Names added

In addition to the 22 names that have been removed from the monument, more than 160 names have also been added. “These include names of Jews who were in Auschwitz. For example, there is a family whose children died in the concentration camp, but whose parents survived. They later had 11 more children”, Dijsselbloem continues.

“People have also been added who experienced the liberation. People who went home from a concentration camp. And ended up here in Eindhoven in one of the largest shelters in the Netherlands. 23 People still died in that shelter from hardship or illness. And of course resistance fighters who ultimately died in one of the concentration camps”.

Relatives

The Mayor hopes that the relatives who were present at the commemoration will find comfort in the added names and that we will recognise the suffering they endured. Even though the list is not yet complete according to Dijsselbloem. “Archives are still being opened from which new names of war victims can be added. Every few years we will therefore review the list and adjust it where necessary”.

At the end of the speech, Dijsselbloem lets people know that judgment is easy to make and that we should think carefully about the names on the monument. “We will continue to commemorate the victims of the Second World War. You will receive that promise from me and if you want, I will also put it on paper”.

Don’t miss these during the Dutch Design week !

The Dutch Design Week started this weekend. Visitors to Eindhoven can delve into future design for ten days, spread over 120 places in the city. You should not miss these special designs.

Fifty shades of red

Designer Ilse Evers relaxes into a bright red chair. It is made from old fire hoses, just like the rest of her collection.

“I make belts, bags, but also lamps and stools. All from fire hoses. My neighbour once gave me such a hose. Then I looked at the material from all sides and started to take it apart. I discovered that it is very strong material. It is colourfast, with a very nice shine. And you can use it both indoors and outdoors, because it is not afraid of water,” says Ilse with a smile.

All Ilse’s designs are unique. “Each hose has its own colour and its own details. Fifty shades of red actually. In fact, no two products are the same.”

The converted fire hoses attract a lot of attention. Simon Le Fevre, visitor to the Dutch Design Week, also plops down in Ilse’s chair.

“It fits well. And it makes you think. To make wooden chairs, we cut down trees. We need animals to make leather chairs. But this is the reuse of old materials. I think that is important.”

Claybens

Many people look at the bricks of designer Emy Bensdorp. She makes clean bricks from clay soil contaminated by PFAS. “That is very special, because previously this soil could only be dumped,” she explains proudly. “During my work as a designer, I gained some experience with ceramics. Making ceramics entails baking clay at 1000 degrees in a special oven, so when I read that PFAS chemicals are rendered harmless around these temperatures, the penny dropped”.

So Emy found a way to break down the toxin PFAS. “I put the contaminated soil in an industrial oven. The heat causes the chemicals to disintegrate and a clean building product – the claybens- remains. We will soon do a large test and make 50,000 bricks, enough for a terraced house. It would be great if houses could soon be built with these bricks. The most important thing is that no more harmful chemicals will end up in the environment.”

Vorkoster

Everyone has experienced it: you think your food is still good in the refrigerator, but the expiry date on the packaging has just passed. “Many people tend to throw the food in the bin. Food waste is also related to the lack of using our senses. We have these natural abilities to check the quality of food through our senses, our sight, smell and taste. A banana peel gets brown, you see it. With Vorkoster I wanted to design the banana peel for every food product. A colour change indicator”, says designer Kimia Amir-Moazami

“This is a lid with a foil that responds to the pH value of the stored food. By changing colour, it shows whether protein-containing food is still edible or not. It therefore shows the actual shelf life,” explains René van Geer from the Secrid Talent Podium. “If the food is no longer good, the foil simply turns red. This prevents food from being thrown away unnecessarily.”

Rien van Ginneken and his wife look on with interest. “I think it is an intelligent lid. There are many products here at DDW that do not look immediately useful but I think I would buy this. Very good to prevent waste in this way.”
