Van Maerlantlyceum celebrated graduation gala: ‘A historic edition’

The Van Maerlantlyceum had an extra special gala on Tuesday evening. Not only this year’s exam candidates, but also the final years of the cancelled corona editions were welcome. The Eindhoven high school was already very enthusiastic about the party preceding the results. “It promised to be a fantastic evening”.

Gala head organiser Erwin van Oudenhoven remembers it well from previous years; the cancellation of the gala, twice. Corona threw a spanner in the works. “Super sour, of course”, he says. “Last year everything was as good as arranged, but we ended up in lockdown in the same week.”

It is an experience where students usually arrive in couples in luxury cars driven by a chauffeur, so that there is a long procession in each village or town every year. Evening dress in style and entering the venue on a red carpet complete the gala. According to Van Oudenhoven, the festive exam closing ceremony is indispensable.”The fantastic gala memory is just part of it. That’s how you really round off your time at secondary school”.

Full of positivity

According to Van Oudenhoven, some 450 examinees celebrated the final party, along with 158 former students. The response was super nice, he says. “Many former students are now studying, so they had exams or another reason not to join, but in general they were very happy with the initiative”.

According to the organiser, it is therefore not difficult to have enthusiastic pupils. “It often happens by itself. Because the year classes are not very different from each other, they met enough acquaintances, which made it extra fun of course”.

Historical

Van Oudenhoven has been organising the gala for eighteen years, but cannot deny that this edition was the most unique. “Indeed, it was a historic happening. It was the students’ evening, nobody can take that away from them anymore”.

Ode to rock ‘n’ roll in the Effenaar

0

The latest theater production, an ode to rock-n-roll legends Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly, will be opening on Sunday at the Effenaar.

Co-creator and fan of Elvis Presley Constantijn Zantingh is enthusiastic about the concert. “Of course many tribute concerts are held, but you probably know them. Often it is more laughable than serious.”

Zantingh brought the music show to the Netherlands together with his friend Arjan Deelen. The actors, from the United States and England, bring the three musicians back to life with a live band. “We’ve searched all over the world for the right people who can best bring out these legends. It was a challenge to find a good Elvis Presley,” claims Constantine Zantingh.

Zantingh is also a big fan of Elvis Presley and has his own fan club. “It was a challenge to find a good Elvis impersonator.” Finally, they found a 23-year-old American. They flew to the United States to see him perform. “Often an Elvis impersonator is more of a joke, but this kid can mimic Elvis’ movements exactly, which is impressive to see.”

As close to the original as possible

The production has been worked on down to the last detail. Clothing for this concert was made by, among others, the original clothing makers of Elvis Presley. “All the hits are there, such as ‘Suspicious Minds’, ‘Pretty Woman’ and ‘Peggy Sue’, and we have done everything we can to present this as beautiful and authentic as possible”, says producer Arjan Deelen. “The microphones and amplifiers are also exact replicas to stay as close to the original as possible,” Zantingh added.

Christmas light show taken down again and will continue next year despite price hikes

The holidays are over and so the Christmas light show on Rode Kruislaan in Woensel is being taken down again. The more than 30,000 lights go back into the box and the street is not so illuminated for a while. And that after more than 2,500 visitors last month.

Breaking down goes a lot faster than building up all the Christmas decorations. “We normally start building up in October, then after Halloween we start putting up the Christmas trees in the gardens and then on St. Nicholas’ birthday everything is ready”, organiser Erik Rakhorst says.

The four residential houses are completely in Christmas atmosphere during the holiday season, which attracts a lot of visitors. “We had around 2,500 visitors this year, which has been less in recent years because of corona. It’s really nice to see the children enjoying the music and the lights”, co-organiser Henk van der Aa says.

Energy bill

More than 30,000 lights are hanging during the Christmas light show, so Erik and Henk can expect a hefty energy bill. “It’s all LED so fortunately that’s not too bad. This year I put a flow meter between them and was able to measure exactly what we consumed. The total is €170, so that’s not too bad. That’s what we’re willing to pay for our hobby”, Rakhorst explains.

Charity

“We do this mostly for the people who stop by and pair a charity with that. This year that charity is Speelcadeau (play gift). An organisation that collects toys for children whose parents can’t afford them. And there was a big donation. In fact, we raised a total of €1000. This goes in its entirety to charity”.

Fans of the Christmas light show can also enjoy a following edition at the end of 2023, so they have to be patient for a while.

Treasure hunt during children’s holiday week with Mister Rick

Find treasures with a magnet or metal detector. There is plenty to do during Meneer (mister) Rick’s children’s holiday week on the sports fields of the High Tech Campus.

“I really enjoy doing things with children that they have never done before,” says Rick de Wit, founder of Meneer Rick. Today the children go on a treasure hunt, paint mugs and go supping. “It’s nice, because I sit at home all day doing nothing,” says one of the children.

Treasures

Special finds are made during magnet fishing. “I found a coin from 1962. I think it’s from England,” says a boy. All the children have to do is toss a rope with a magnet attached into the water. “All metal sticks to the magnet and you can fish for things,” says another boy. “I have already found 5 cents, a stone and a metal bar.” The metal detectors are also used to search for treasures. “We found something really big. We think it’s a barbecue grill,” says one of the treasure hunters.

Sleep

For the first time, the children can also sleep in a tent. “It’s nice, but cold,” says one of the children. “There is also a lot of noise. Especially from the boys. They keep throwing cookies against our tent, so we sleep in another tent,” adds another girl. The children can choose what time they go to sleep. “We didn’t sleep until 12:30 last night, but we’re not tired yet.”

The children’s holiday week lasts until Thursday.

Ronde van Waalre prepares for the heat

The starting gun for the Tour of Waalre will sound next Saturday. The 23rd edition of the running event has new routes and takes the summer heat into account with all kinds of precautions.

Precautions

Due to the high temperatures this weekend, extra precautions have been taken in consultation with the GGD. Additional water stations have been arranged and the youth run has been shortened by a lap. “We try to remind people that you have to pay close attention to each other and that if things don’t work out, you have to stop.”

Greenery

“What is special about this running race is that you can quickly get from the centre of Waalre to the green countryside,” says Arjen Verhiel, board member of the organization and trainer. Unlike last year, there is a different route; the start is now in front of the Old Tower and no longer in the Market. “We did this for safety. This way, the route runs through less traffic. In addition, there are more long straight lanes, so we also expect faster times”.

Youth

In addition to the Ronde van Waalre, there is also the youth run. “We invite all primary schools and can also win a prize,” says Arjen. “In the youth-run, the prize does not go to the fastest runner but to the school with the most registrations. This is because we do not think it is important that the children set records, but that they participate.”

There are 130 registrations for the Ronde van Waalre, approximately the same number of runners participate in the youth run. It is also possible to register on the day itself. Arjen expects people to do that less quickly this year due to the warm weather.

Dijsselbloem explains in speech about incorrect names war memorial

Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem gave a speech during the commemoration on Stadhuisplein in Eindhoven about the war and how black and white it was at that time. And how conspiracy theories were already being spread and manipulation was taking place at the time.

The Mayor is mainly talking about the war memorial on Stadhuisplein, which was placed in 2013 and was discredited in April this year due to the incorrect names. “The decision to adapt the monument is not an easy one. A situation like this is never completely black or white”.

It is of course no coincidence that the war memorial on Stadhuisplein was adjusted just in time for the commemoration on 18 September. The 22 people with a ‘wrong past’ who are on the monument will be removed. In addition, 160 names of people who actually belonged on the monument are added. “This was a difficult decision. A situation is never completely right or wrong. Sometimes we find ourselves in a gray area”, Dijsselbloem said in his speech.

Conscription

For example, there is the name of a German man who came to live in Eindhoven with his parents at a young age. At the age of eighteen he was drafted into the German army. As a German he had to serve in the army and he had no choice, even though he didn’t want that at all. A refusal to serve would otherwise cost him dearly”.

Convicted

“His name therefore remains on the monument and that does not apply to an Eindhoven police officer who helped round up and deport Jews during the war. He was also convicted for this after the war. At the same time, the police officer helped people who were resisting. He told them when they would be arrested, so that they could escape in time. So the police officer did right and wrong things, and is not on the monument”, the Mayor says.

Names added

In addition to the 22 names that have been removed from the monument, more than 160 names have also been added. “These include names of Jews who were in Auschwitz. For example, there is a family whose children died in the concentration camp, but whose parents survived. They later had 11 more children”, Dijsselbloem continues.

“People have also been added who experienced the liberation. People who went home from a concentration camp. And ended up here in Eindhoven in one of the largest shelters in the Netherlands. 23 People still died in that shelter from hardship or illness. And of course resistance fighters who ultimately died in one of the concentration camps”.

Relatives

The Mayor hopes that the relatives who were present at the commemoration will find comfort in the added names and that we will recognise the suffering they endured. Even though the list is not yet complete according to Dijsselbloem. “Archives are still being opened from which new names of war victims can be added. Every few years we will therefore review the list and adjust it where necessary”.

At the end of the speech, Dijsselbloem lets people know that judgment is easy to make and that we should think carefully about the names on the monument. “We will continue to commemorate the victims of the Second World War. You will receive that promise from me and if you want, I will also put it on paper”.

‘Typical Eindhoven’ So What’s Next Jazz festival celebrates 10th edition

On 28, 29 and 30 October, the tenth edition of the So What’s Next Jazz Festival will take place at the Muziekgebouw. A reason for the festival to go for it, especially after previous editions could only go on in slimmed-down form.

“Yes that’s right. Last year we had to deal with downsized hall attendance, the year before that it was online. We are happy that this edition can take place again as the festival was intended initially. At least that is what we assume, although clearly corona is not completely gone. This year we hope to welcome around 1,500 visitors again on the Saturday”.

Speaking is Barend Fransen, a former board member of the festival but involved for the first time this year in putting together the program. Fransen is also founder of the renowned jazz band Gare du Nord.

“I think you can also see that in the program of So What’s Next”, Fransen says. “Because the festival actually wants the same thing that we also want with Gare du Nord: not to be pigeonholed. That applies very much to contemporary jazz anyway”, Fransen says.

“Because if there is one genre that is always looking for the cross-connections, it is jazz. From electro to hip-hop, jazz can be heard in almost everything. And we want to exploit that fact at the festival. I dare say that this edition will be the most broad and versatile edition so far”.

From Los Angeles to Turkey
So where does this versatility lie? Fransen explains, “One of the biggest names we have is Lady Blackbird. A hugely talented singer from Los Angeles, someone who I expect the whole world will know in six months. From the other side, we have the Ashley Henry Trio, from the London hip-hop scene, and Karsu, who interweaves jazz music with influences from Turkish music”.

“But besides that, we also have, for example, the Archie Shepp Quartet”, Fransen continues. “Shepp is an old jazz pioneer from New York, who is now 85 but still influential. That’s what makes him so special. And his presence also tells something about the music movement, about where it comes from”.

Ultimately, this versatility, the eclectic program, is also why the festival fits Eindhoven so well, Fransen explains. “The cross-connections you see in our program, that’s what we’re always working on in Eindhoven. We are always working on innovation, we never ask ourselves here, ‘is it possible?’ but rather, ‘why not?’ “.

And with that attitude, So What’s Next also distinguishes itself from other jazz festivals in the province of Brabant, the organiser believes. “If you look at the Breda Jazz Festival, it is a bit more traditional – a fantastic festival by the way. Jazz in Duke Town in Den Bosch focuses more on Dutch talent and what it all has to offer”.

A broad audience
“We also have a somewhat more international approach – which also suits our audience. And we aim for a broad program. The nice thing about having such a diverse range of music, is that you get a diverse audience. That is perhaps the best thing about So What’s Next”, Fransen concludes.

Dutch Design Week attracts global attention

Eindhoven is in the spotlights this week, now that the Dutch Design Week has started again. The event not only attracts a lot of attention nationally, but also far beyond.

Journalists and companies from around the world are in town for nine days to view the work of more than 2,600 designers at 120 different locations. The designs are about the future: ideas and solutions for major social issues at stake, such as loneliness, food scarcity, housing shortage and climate change.

Quality

Journalists from Japan and Korea, among others, but also from Germany and France, have requested to attend. Renowned newspapers such as The Washington Post and The New York Times get accreditation for this week. “We get many international requests, but it’s not about the quantity. Quality is leading. We have therefore chosen permanent media partners, such as the well-known magazine Dezeen, the VPRO (television broadcaster), the Italian fashion magazine Lampoon and the German design magazine Nomad”, says Maxi Meissner of the Dutch Design Week (DDW).

It means great attention for the city and the event, but especially for the designers. “All that attention ensures that designers are appreciated, discovered and seen”.

Business

City marketeer Peter Kentie of Eindhoven365 also sees the international interest in the DDW from the business community. “The decoration of the city attracts companies to Eindhoven. Hotels and restaurants are full. It is interesting to be a part of it. Audi, for example, comes check out the latest trends”. At the same time, the DDW provides a connection, he says. “The week leads to new networks for companies. This will ultimately lead to more employment. The event is one of great international value for Eindhoven”.

The DDW lasts until Sunday 30 October.
