Theme for Glow 2023 revealed

0

It was another edition without corona restrictions, but in the middle of the energy crisis. Nevertheless, the organisation of the light festival glows with pride. It has also announced the theme for the 2023 edition of GLOW: “The Beat”.

Vistor Counts

In recent years, the festival has attracted many hundreds of thousands of visitors. This year, the organisation decided not to count visitor numbers, partly because many people deviated from the routes. A spokesperson mentioned that he has had ‘about the same number of visitors as before corona’.

Energy Crisis

The eight-day light spectacle has 33 works of art. In eight days plus a dress rehearsal, they consume a total of 5,000 kWh of electricity. In addition, the organisation itself consumes another 2000 kWh.
GLOW therefore stopped an hour earlier from Monday to Thursday. As a result, the total energy consumption is not 7000, but 6500 kWh. This is comparable to the average consumption of approximately 100 Dutch households in the same nine days.

Fewer Icons

Iconic buildings often shine in GLOW. This time the number of illuminated icons was not very large. This was mainly due to roadworks and construction projects in Eindhoven. “But even on a rainy Tuesday, the city was quite full,” said Ramakers. According to the organisation, crowd pullers were the station building and the DAF trucks.

The light festival was canceled in 2020 and in 2021 there were plenty of corona measures, such as access controls. The last day could unexpectedly not take place due to a lockdown. This made this edition the first normal GLOW in three years.

GLOW 2023

The theme for 2023, The Beat, refers to such concepts as the rhythm of the city and the frequency of light and sound. “With this theme we are already sending the artists on the path towards the next GLOW”, adds the director.

Christmas light show taken down again and will continue next year despite price hikes

The holidays are over and so the Christmas light show on Rode Kruislaan in Woensel is being taken down again. The more than 30,000 lights go back into the box and the street is not so illuminated for a while. And that after more than 2,500 visitors last month.

Breaking down goes a lot faster than building up all the Christmas decorations. “We normally start building up in October, then after Halloween we start putting up the Christmas trees in the gardens and then on St. Nicholas’ birthday everything is ready”, organiser Erik Rakhorst says.

The four residential houses are completely in Christmas atmosphere during the holiday season, which attracts a lot of visitors. “We had around 2,500 visitors this year, which has been less in recent years because of corona. It’s really nice to see the children enjoying the music and the lights”, co-organiser Henk van der Aa says.

Energy bill

More than 30,000 lights are hanging during the Christmas light show, so Erik and Henk can expect a hefty energy bill. “It’s all LED so fortunately that’s not too bad. This year I put a flow meter between them and was able to measure exactly what we consumed. The total is €170, so that’s not too bad. That’s what we’re willing to pay for our hobby”, Rakhorst explains.

Charity

“We do this mostly for the people who stop by and pair a charity with that. This year that charity is Speelcadeau (play gift). An organisation that collects toys for children whose parents can’t afford them. And there was a big donation. In fact, we raised a total of €1000. This goes in its entirety to charity”.

Fans of the Christmas light show can also enjoy a following edition at the end of 2023, so they have to be patient for a while.

Labyrinth in Philips de Jonghpark: a posthumous gift from DJ Lady Aïda

A labyrinth of legendary Eindhoven techno DJ Lady Aïda will be unveiled in Eindhoven’s Philips de Jonghpark on Sunday. The artwork is her parting gift to the city. Lady Aïda died in 2021 as a result of breast cancer.

A maze with a circumference of 55 metres and up to 17 metres wide. That is the physical part of the artwork left to the city by the DJ – who was born with the name Aïda Spaninks. The stones of the artwork are laid in the grass so that walkers can walk along the paths. Soon to be added are a kind of radio play composed by various sound artists.

The work was financed with money from the proceeds of Aïda’s record collection and a contribution from the Stichting Cultuur Eindhoven (Eindhoven culture foundation). The opening begins Sunday at 15:00; those interested can register by sending an e-mail to projecten@rebelbass.com.

This new Eindhoven coffee shop is partly run by people with dementia

At first glance, Smaakmakers in Woensel-West seems like your average coffee shop, but it isn’t. In this newly opened business people with dementia help in the operation. A group of vulnerable people, who are close to the heart of the owners.

The family behind Smaakmakers was itself affected by the disease. Founder Jolande Verbakel experienced up close how her father dealt with the consequences of dementia. However, he wasn’t the type to give up. “My father still wanted to be important,” explains Jolande. However, that turned out to be easier said than done. “Many things that are organized for people with dementia do not suit everyone. My father didn’t want to do crafts or shuffleboard, but still be useful.”

From workshop to coffee shop

It didn’t give her the idea to start a coffee shop yet. That only came later through her daughter and co-founder, Melissa de Laat. She worked in dementia care and organized cooking workshops for people suffering from the disease. The blissful reactions of participants left a taste for more. “I wanted to do something like this more often,” Melissa begins. Brainstorming began. “At first I thought about a catering company, but in the end I decided to start my own coffee shop together with my mother, who worked in the catering industry.”

Smaakmakers became reality through a crowdfunding campaign. The pair raised more than forty thousand euros. The opening of the coffee shop on Edisonplein took place last Saturday. With their own company, the two hope to get people with dementia out of the doldrums.

“You notice in people who are diagnosed that they become very passive, because they think they can no longer do something.” Her daughter adds: “Of course the disease will get worse, but we focus on the period before that. When they can still do a lot.”

Employee of the first hour

An employee (with dementia) from the very beginning is Ellie. She has only had a few working days, but she can no longer live without the company. “It’s very nice here. I don’t want to leave here,” she says with a smile on her face. “I do all kinds of things. For example, if I see something lying around, I clean it up.”

One thing the employees suffering from amnesia are not allowed to do is take orders. This is done via a QR code or at the cash register. “We don’t want it to be too stressful for them. It’s also okay if they bring an order to the wrong table. We also count on a little understanding from the guests.”

250 children compete in schools chess championship

Supreme concentration during the chess championship at primary school ‘t Palet. More than 250 students took part in the district chess championships for primary schools on Wednesday.

The students are very enthusiastic about the tournament. A total of 58 teams from 22 different schools participated. “Chess is so much fun because you have to think carefully,” says one of the participants. In teams of four, the participants played matches of up to 25 minutes against each other.

Popular

Kevin Sijmens, teacher of ‘t Palet, also notices that chess is very popular among his students. “We give after-school chess lessons here at school. About forty students are already taking part in this, but it is so popular that there is even a waiting list. We are therefore going to see if we can add another class.”

Championships

The championship matches started at 1.30 pm and the prize-giving ceremony will take place around 5.30 pm. The winners go on to the Brabant Chess Championships. “I hope we win, but I really don’t think so.”

Paul runs Alpe d’Huez – despite his cancer

Eindhoven resident Paul van Tatenhove will brave the Alpe D’Huez in September, as a sponsor campaign for the Matchis Foundation. He wants to collect 100,000 euros with his action. “I like to contribute”

“A year and a half ago I was diagnosed with third-degree melanoma cancer with a metastasis in my left armpit. I had to go up four floors from the ground floor in the hospital to immediately plan an intake for an operation. My first thought was: ‘I will never take the elevator again’. I like to keep fit and running is really my thing,” says Paul van Tatenhove.

Last summer, Paul climbed Mont Ventoux in France while running. “Especially to see what I could do, but it went so well that I also wanted to walk the Alpe d’Huez. At first just for myself, but after a while I decided to link it to a good cause.”

Thijs Slegers

After the message from Thijs Slegers in which he indicated that his struggle was in vain and he called on everyone to register as a stem cell donor, he decided to run for the Matchis Foundation. “I am thankful that I am still alive and Thijs deserves the memory. In addition, I cannot become a stem cell donor myself because of my own illness. It is a good solution to make this contribution.”

The Matchis Foundation is looking for stem cell donors for patients with leukemia or other serious blood disorders. For some patients, a stem cell transplant is the last chance for life. For a transplant, the donor’s and patient’s stem cells must be similar. The chance that two people match with each other is very small, which is why many donors are needed. The money collected from Paul can be used by Matchis for registering, testing and managing the donor file.

Yield

Shortly before Thijs passed away, Paul informed him of his initiative. “He thought it was great, but unfortunately couldn’t do anything more. That’s why I do it myself.” Paul wants to raise a total of €100,000 for the Matchis Foundation. “It is a large amount, but I think it will work out. If everyone donates one euro, we can still raise a large amount with a small gift from a lot of people.” Paul would prefer to ask all supporters in the PSV stadium to donate the amount of one beer to his campaign, instead of throwing the same beer on the field. “In this way we show that football is a sport of fraternisation.”

To raise extra money, Paul will auction sponsored items. “I’m still busy collecting all the stuff. I have already received four VIP tickets for the Frits Philips lounge from Philips, four tickets for a Bavaria brewery tour and EnergieDirect will give me a shirt with the signatures of the PSV players. I will later sell all the collected items through an auction.”

Sponsor run

September 23 is the day Paul runs the Alpe d’Huez. “I deliberately chose not to run it during the Alpe d’Huzes. That doesn’t suit me. You have to pay an entry fee and you need a minimum sponsorship amount. I just want all the money to go to charity.”

Paul walks the 13.2 km up anyway. “Whether I also walk down depends on how I feel about myself. That is even harder, because your body has to absorb all the shocks. If I still feel good on top of the mountain, then I will definitely walk down as well.”

Concerti Fetti back in Eindhoven

Jan Smit, Django Wagner and Jan Biggel: these were some of the artists who performed on Wednesday evening in a full Indoor Sports Center during Concerti Fetti. The festival for people with disabilities is back in Eindhoven. A crowd of 4500 visitors sang and danced along.

The festive evening, organised by the Gehandicapten Concert Eindhoven foundation, has since become a household name in the city. The 20th edition was held in 2019, at the time still in the Beursgebouw.

“Visitors only need three notes and two words to sing along to the songs at the top of their lungs. They enjoy it as if their birthday and carnival fall on the same day,” explains Meranda de Laat of the organisation.

‘Nothing is more fun than this’

More than 100 volunteers contributed to the realisation of Concerti Fetti. “Seeing them smile: that’s what we do it for. It’s incredibly rewarding work.”

Eindhoven bakers’ strike off the table

The strikes announced earlier today at, among others, Dutch Bakery in Eindhoven, will not take place. FNV Voedingsindustrie and CNV Vakmensen on the one hand and the employers on the other have reached a last-minute negotiation result.

Part of the result is that wages will increase by sixteen percent over a period of nineteen months. Tomorrow, this result will be presented to the members in the companies that were to go on strike. Ron Vos, director FNV Voedingsindustrie: “The industrial employers have made a significantly better wage offer under the threat of strikes. Tomorrow we want to discuss this with our members.”

The proposal is to increase wages by seven percent on July 1 this year. On January 1 and July 1 of next year, another 4.5 percent will be added at a time. Further substantive agreements for in the CBA have not been made.

Relieved

Nicole Engmann-Van Eijbergen, director CNV Vakmensen: “I am relieved that the pressure of a possible strike was enough to make the employers move. They saw in time that they could not conclude yet another collective bargaining agreement at the expense of their own people. It is now up to the members to judge whether they succeeded.”

Bread factory Dutch Bakery at the Hurksestraat in Eindhoven employs a total of 75 people.

Woensel-Zuid Got Talent

Song, dance or poetry. It all came by this weekend during Woensel-Zuid Got Talent, a new talent show in the Eindhoven neighbourhood. At the Emmaus Church, Woensel youth showed off their talents.

Woensel-South pact

The talent show is part of Pact Woensel-Zuid. The neighbourhood has been struggling with problems such as litter, crime and loitering youth for years. With the pact, the municipality works together with civil society organisations to focus on liveability and safety over the next 20 years. “This neighbourhood also often focuses on things that can be done differently or better. With this evening, we want to show what is already going well,” Van Asten explains. “And that is a lot. Especially with the youth, there’s a lot of great things to show.”

Podcast

One of the young people taking part is 23-year-old Thomas. He has his own podcast in which he talks to young people and agencies together about how to listen to each other. “I want to build bridges between people in positions and young people,” he explains. “I do that by breaking taboos and discussing interesting topics.”

For his act, he does one such podcast interview live, with guest city envoy Angelique Bellemakers. He does it all in street language. “With that, difficult topics can be discussed by people who would normally avoid them because they feel the language use excludes them.”

Another participant is 11-year-old Cristiano. He talks on stage about all the things he is already doing for the neighbourhood. “I participated in the Halloween activities and street and contact day. And last year we had an iftar in the neighbourhood,” he says. On stage, he talks about his neighbourhood. So it seems like the kids are on the right track.
