Accelerating our Smart Society @ High Tech Campus, Eindhoven

In recent years, we have seamlessly progressed towards connected-communities. As such, an ever-increasing wave of new smart products is meshing into our lives. Welcome to the new era of Smart Society.

Eindhoven’s High Tech Campus (HTC) currently holds the top spot on Innovation in Europe. As a matter of fact, HTC is quickly becoming the driving force on several key technologies in the global arena.

On 9th November 2018, HTC hosted the very first “High Tech Next: Accelerating our Smart Society”. HH Constantijn van Oranje’s presence clearly marks the sheer importance. He proudly shared his views on the ground-breaking technologies and leadership in The Netherlands.   It was a full-day event, with several world-class speakers from technology giants such as imec, Huawei, Philips, TomTom, IBM, and VRee. Coupled with enthusiastic questions from the audience, we had a remarkable experience.

Smart society

What is a Smart Society? Does it frighten some of us? Indeed, this was the starting point of the day, with John Baekelmans. He mesmerized us with examples of city planning at Antwerp, where he is launching his trials. The “smart zones” are fitted with cameras and intelligent lighting. Everything is connected and working together to enhance social lives in the neighborhood, whilst maintaining personal privacy. He shared his vision of the distant future with connected technologies embedded in our daily lives. We would have healthier lives. And all the more with intelligent infrastructure, we would be able to prevent floods, traffic jams and improve air quality. In short, he prepared us for worry-free life in the near future.

In the last years, we see that Data Traffic has more than tripled. However, a tenfold increase is predicted in the coming 5 years. Integrated healthcare, connected home appliances, robotics, drones, driverless cars etc will demand a new infrastructure. Fortunately, the upcoming 5G wireless system addresses this point. This is the efficient platform necessary to manage this futuristic landscape. Thankfully, we had Jurjen Veldhuizen and Jeroen Thijsen, to reassure us. Yes, we are on track with the right technology for the coming years.

Driverless Cars

How could we discuss Smart Society, without touching on driverless cars? We had the pleasure of Harold Goddijn, to share his views on “Mapping the Road to Autonomous Driving”. Eventually, the driverless car would be a connected system of “car-cloud-car” loop. This would be a live-feed system to optimize the journey, with time, energy and road safety. Wonder if we would still need a driving license?

Artificial intelligence is the future

Virtual Reality (VR) is not just for gamers. Menno Bischops shared several examples on successful applications of VR. Particularly, his system focusses on value-for-money.  He proudly shared that the Dutch military was using his system for training purposes. Moreover, Bischops sees huge potential opportunities with VR adapted for many other industries and applications.

But now, are we losing ourselves? Are we in control with all these daunting artificial intelligence-based technologies? Though many worry about the impact, Christian Kromme is positive. He explained the parallels between the 7 phases in human evolution to the 7 phases in our technological evolution. He believes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be the tsunami that brings us into a new era. Furthermore, this new technology will advance humanity ten times more than any of the previous technological phases.  More importantly, he reassures us that we are heading towards a more meaningful and purposeful future. Perhaps to start all over again, when we colonize other planets!

Neelie Kroes calls for more tech-women at High Tech Campus event: ‘Girl power!’

Former European Commissioner Neelie Kroes called for more women in the technology sector at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven on Tuesday.

She made this statement at the event Female Tech Heroes that was organised with the same aim: more women in the technical world which is now dominated by men. “It has to become a more balanced mix of men and women. It will lead to other ideas and nicer products”, organiser Hilde de Vocht said. “Research shows that a diverse team leads to better products”, co-organiser Ingelou Stol adds.

Network kick off

The Female Tech Heroes Network was also launched during the opening of the conference. This network already counts 1,500 members and is meant for creating more opportunities for women in technology, organise workshops and of course, network.

Handful of men

Almost only women could be found in the conference centre of the High Tech Campus yesterday. Here and there you saw a few men, usually talking to a woman. “The society exists about half of men and women. So it is healthy to pursue that in all sectors”, one of the men present said.

Lot of interest

“Today we could have filled the room five times with enthusiastic women who find this an important topic”, De Vocht said. It shows that the subject is alive, but that the transition to have more jobs filled by women is yet to be made.

Illuminated sunflowers inspired by Van Gogh to go on display in Nuenen

0

A light installation inspired by Van Gogh’s sunflowers was a popular feature of Eindhoven’s Glow festival in 2019. This year the sunflowers will make a comeback – this time in Nuenen, where Van Gogh painted some of his most famous works more than a hundred years ago.

The sunflowers will go on display next to the Roosdonck windmill. The windmill lies close to the De Groot family’s farm. The family formed the inspiration for Van Gogh’s famous ‘De Aardappeleters’ (‘The Potato Eaters’).

The display is part of an initiative by Nuenen Council, the organisers behind Glow, and Van Gogh Brabant, an organisation preserving Van Gogh’s heritage. They state that the intention is to bring a ‘colourful homage’ to Van Gogh to the area.

The sunflower display was designed by light artists Hugo Vrijdag from Eindhoven, and Gu Yeliang from China. It was originally created for the 2019 edition of Glow, where they adorned the stairs outside the Witte Dame building.

Glow runs from 6 to 13 November this year.

Construction of Kennedylaan Park Hilaria takes off

0

Two days from now Park Hilaria will reopen in Eindhoven. One hundred attractions are now being built on Kennedylaan as Park Hilaria is expected to stay open for ten days. About 450,000 visitors are estimated to attend.

Last year the event was slightly adjusted due to corona. The attractions were further apart and the Feestcafé was not welcome. This year everything is back to normal. “We are very happy to be there again,” says Harold van Nielen of the Feestcafé. “Making people happy is what makes the heart beat faster.”

Swing Carousel

New at Park Hilaria is the ‘Around the World’ attraction, a sixty-metre merry-go-round. “With a hundred attractions, there is something for everyone,” says Mariola Scheepstra of organizer Eindhoven 24/7. “The swing carousel (zweefmolen) is new, I think you have a very nice view of the city from there.”

Twentieth Edition

It is the twentieth edition of Park Hilaria and so it is ten days of celebration. Showmen are happy to be back. “I was in Tilburg for this, which was a lot of stress, there is a bit more peace here,” says a fair operator of an attraction.

Unlike many other cities, the Eindhoven fun fair is not located in the city center, but rather the entire Kennedylaan is closed for the amusement park. “You have pleasant long hours, you don’t have to close everything at night, and the organization is very nice. It is a trusted location.”

Park Hilaria is set to open this Friday afternoon, August 5.

TU/e had students removed unjustly: ‘We were allowed to demonstrate’

One of the students who was arrested in March for demonstrating against the presence of oil company Shell at a TU/e career fair has been declared innocent by the judge.

About twenty students were arrested in March. Then they were fined heftily. Bram, one of the activists who was arrested at the university, was fined 300 euros. He challenged that, which meant that he had to appear in court on Friday 7 October.

The judge was then clear in his judgment, says Bram. “Our freedom to demonstrate should never have been curtailed. That confirms the feeling we had at the time. We were very surprised that after five minutes of demonstration, the police were right in front of us.”

Prosecution

It is unclear whether the prosecution will appeal the ruling. The OM (Netherlands Public Prosecution Service) had initially dropped the demand for the fine because it was under the assumption that the students made the entire career event inaccessible. This turned out not to be the case during the lawsuit – the fair could continue as usual. “The Public Prosecution Service then dropped the demand for the fine, but they wanted me to be found guilty. Fortunately, that didn’t happen,” says Bram.

Deteriorated

As a result of the events, the relationship between the university and the students has deteriorated, says the student-cum-climate activist. “Yes, that seems logical to me. If you think the presence of a company like Shell, which has been spreading lies about climate change for years, is more important than the well-being of your students, then that is not a basis for building a good relationship,” says Bram.

How can that relationship be improved? “Apologies from the university for its behavior would be in order. They haven’t come yet.”

But rather than apologies, Bram prefers something else. “Transparency. That the university is open and honest about its ties to the fossil fuel industry and how much money is involved. But that honestly seems like a utopia to me,” said Bram.

First female employees of Philips honoured

The ‘Maria Boogersstraat’ and the ‘Adriana van Buullaan’ could just become new street names on Strijp-S. The municipality of Eindhoven would like to honour the first two female employees employed by the company.

They both started in 1891, when the electronics group also started in Eindhoven. Gerard and Anton Philips, who formed the basis of the company, mainly hired girls to assemble light bulbs. Van Buul and Boogers (both born in 1879) therefore as the very first.

Lamp makers

Many companies are now trying to find a good balance between men and women in the workplace. “Philips has been involved in this from the outset,” says Rik Thijs, alderman for public space. “Since its foundation, the company has employed many women who were specially recruited to make lamps.”

Many employees in the early days of Philips were called ‘lamp makers’. A statue was once erected for that group. The municipality now wants to express its appreciation to the first two employees with the street names.

The municipality is currently looking for relatives of both women.

Griet hosts an exhibition on war in her house

Eindhoven-based artist Griet Menschaert has made her own home available for a touring exhibition. That includes works by Ukrainian artists created during the war in Ukraine.

“I actually live here alone and I think it is too big for me, also in the context of the housing crisis. So I am looking for functions that my house can have, also for other people,” says the artist. The living room is made empty and the walls are filled with various, visual artworks.
The curator of the touring exhibition “Thinking about Ukraine” explains: “Not only are the stories of the artworks very special, but it is also special that our expo is now allowed to take place in someone’s home.”

Not all the artworks depict the war, though they were all made during the war. “It’s very intimate and emotional and you can feel that reflected,” says one visitor. “Inside you have a diary with drawings and that is just pure emotion. To have it in such an intimate place, at a desk in a house, you don’t often get that close.”

Curtain

Griet herself also collaborated on one of the artworks: a curtain with letters on it. “My best friend is in Ukraine, but we were able to make this curtain together,” Menschaert says. “I sent clothes to Ukraine, from which she was able to cut the letters. On the curtain is my name and Varia’s name, on the back of the cloth they are in Ukrainian text.”

The aim of the exhibition is to make people in the West realise that they should be grateful for their freedom.

The exhibition is on display until 18 September at Rubinsteinlaan 37 in Eindhoven.
