Theatres in region work together under the name Wonka

0

Six theatres in the Eindhoven region will work together under the name Wonka. Parktheater, De Schalm, Speelhuis, Hofnar, Cacaofabriek, and Kattendans have announced this in a statement.

Since last year, the theatres have been joining forces, but the six venues want to expand this further. They especially want to share their knowledge and experience in the field of technology, innovation and programming.
And because many internationals are living in the high-tech Brainport Region, the theatres also want more cooperation in the area of internationalisation.

The new name Wonka refers to factory director Willy Wonka from the famous Roald Dahl book ‘Sjakie en de chocoladefabriek’ (‘Sjakie/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’). ‘The character of Wonka brings wonder to the world and is a contrary pioneer for whom imagination is paramount. That is exactly how the venues envisage their collaboration’, the theatres write.

The joint programme can be found here. Several shows have a special label ‘No Dutch Required’. These performances are easily understandable or language is not an issue at all like with music and dance shows.

Taco’s, music and football with Latino’s

0

Coming Saturday the treats of Latin America are combined: Taco’s, music, dancing, ánd football.

Tortilleria & Art Mis Amores organized last Sunday a Mexican popular culture day with the screening of the match between Mexico and Germany, where they catered traditional Mexican food. Mexico won and at the end of the day, all nationalities were dancing to the sound of Cielito Lindo, a popular Mexican song.

Coming Saturday they would like to try this formula again, for the game Mexico vs South Korea,

because maybe this helps? Together with CLO, who organises the monthly Music with Latino’s, they invite all nationalities, especially their Korean friends, to come and watch, and to cheer together. After the match there will be music and dancing.

The event is from 16:00 to 23:00. Kitchen will open at 16:00 hrs and food will be served until it is available.

Venue: Hub, Vestdijk 25, Eindhoven

Twirl World Championship in Eindhoven

0

The Twirl World Championship in Eindhoven is now on. Wednesday evening was the opening and today the games for the thirteen participating countries started. Els van Vugt from Eindhoven is thrilled to be able to represent the Netherlands in her hometown.

Twirling is a sport in which dance is combined with a baton. The twirlers hold the baton while dancing. A jury assesses the dance and gives a score based on that. It is important that the baton does not fall to the floor; otherwise the twirler will receive a penalty point.

According to Van Vugt, the sport is different from majorette. “Twirling is done on a floor in a hall and majorette is really with a fanfare on the street. That is more the old-fashioned form. What we do is really top sport. There is much more discipline involved.”

The wait began in 2020

She’s been looking forward to it for two years and now it’s finally here. “I am so looking forward to this. We would already be twirling here in 2020, but then it was cancelled due to corona. Now I can finally compete for the world title, with my family and friends in the audience. Really cool,” explains Els van Vugt.

It is her first World Cup in her own country and that applies to several in the team. “Almost everyone who was on the team two years ago is still there. That is very good, because motivation was less during the corona crisis,” says coach Nancy Malepaard.

Medals

The Dutch team is participating in the solo and team events. The expectations are very high. “World champion would be the best, but the United States is really in a class of its own. I think there is still a medal in it. That should be doable,” says Malepaard.

For Van Vugt it is a bit different. “We have trained very hard for this for two and a half years and we will see where it will be. It already feels very special that we are here.”

Collages from Martin Voorbij on show

The opening of the exhibition ‘Falling Apart Together’ from Eindhoven artist is on Thursday 25 April at 20.00hrs at De Kruisruimte on Generaal Bothastraat. It will include a performance by violinist Max Swagemakers. After that, the exhibition can be visited until 5 May.

“We are falling apart more and more. Social cohesion is slowly crumbling and individualism is becoming more and more important. But we do so together. That’s what I was thinking about when I came up with that title,” Martin explains about his work.

Last December, Martin returned to Eindhoven, after three years of absence. With a great experience in his pocket and a large number of self-made collages richer. For himself, the exhibition is a personal overview since corona. “Visitors will probably see something else in it. Besides, it is my ode to painting and that while I can’t paint at all myself. That’s why I made collages out of it,” he says.

Martin Voorbij (58) is a well know artist in Eindhoven. He set up the Inkijkmuseum (insight museum) in 2004 at Dommelstraat to display the thousands of paintings painted by fellow artists from all over the world. He started this venture in connection with his job for the ‘Vredesbureau’ (peace bureau). “My job description was: promoting global awareness, because the more we know about the world, the easier it is to avoid misunderstandings. They asked me to think of something you can use to engage people with the rest of the world.”
He travelled to England, Hungary, Romania, Istanbul, America, Mali and even India. With his yellow truck he delivered a panel to artists and asked them to show their impression of hope on the canvas. That became the ‘Show Your Hope’ permanent exhibition.

He began to make collages from the old paintings during corona because the museum closed. Eventually he went with his DAF truck to Bosnia because the big yellow van was not allowed in the city anymore. There he continued his creative work: “It was the first time I made art for myself.”

Martin about his new exposition: “The corona period has been very influential with particularly many people and the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Hence, the result of my work during that period is lavish and mysterious. The result is a gigantic cabinet full of images consisting of fragments of colours and shapes, merging into new space.”

Here you can find more information about the Falling Apart Together exhibition.

High Tech Campus brains are spotting falcons

To give the bright minds at the High Tech Campus a break and let them discover the nature around their own offices, Portuguese expatriate Nuno started organising a monthly ‘wildlife’ walk. It is now a huge success.

Nuno Corado came to Eindhoven because his wife started working at Signify. He decided to use his background as an ecologist to set up a business. In Corona time, he started offering wildlife tours to companies, but now he also organises public tours of the High Tech Campus grounds for which anyone can sign up.

The ‘safari’ takes place once a month; on this particular Tuesday afternoon the sun is shining and hundreds of employees of the High Tech Campus are walking around the grounds in groups. They all do a lunch walk, but this lunch walk is different. Guide Nuno points out, his group stares, and listens to his stories about the falcons and a blue tit.

“Really nice”, an IT specialist says with a smile. “That there is so much to see here, which you don’t expect at all. But that it is a special area where we work, I knew that”. A lady with pearl earrings and spotless white trousers heaves a sigh when the walk is over. “I saw a lot, a peregrine falcon, a kestrel and a blue tit. It was lovely”.

After an hour, the employees return to their desks, satisfied and relaxed. They can recommend such a safari to anyone.

Woensel-Zuid Got Talent

Song, dance or poetry. It all came by this weekend during Woensel-Zuid Got Talent, a new talent show in the Eindhoven neighbourhood. At the Emmaus Church, Woensel youth showed off their talents.

Woensel-South pact

The talent show is part of Pact Woensel-Zuid. The neighbourhood has been struggling with problems such as litter, crime and loitering youth for years. With the pact, the municipality works together with civil society organisations to focus on liveability and safety over the next 20 years. “This neighbourhood also often focuses on things that can be done differently or better. With this evening, we want to show what is already going well,” Van Asten explains. “And that is a lot. Especially with the youth, there’s a lot of great things to show.”

Podcast

One of the young people taking part is 23-year-old Thomas. He has his own podcast in which he talks to young people and agencies together about how to listen to each other. “I want to build bridges between people in positions and young people,” he explains. “I do that by breaking taboos and discussing interesting topics.”

For his act, he does one such podcast interview live, with guest city envoy Angelique Bellemakers. He does it all in street language. “With that, difficult topics can be discussed by people who would normally avoid them because they feel the language use excludes them.”

Another participant is 11-year-old Cristiano. He talks on stage about all the things he is already doing for the neighbourhood. “I participated in the Halloween activities and street and contact day. And last year we had an iftar in the neighbourhood,” he says. On stage, he talks about his neighbourhood. So it seems like the kids are on the right track.
