PSV ready for cup match: ‘There must be no lack of motivation’

PSV will play against ADO Den Haag in the Philips Stadium on Thursday evening. At stake is the semi-final of the KNVB Cup. Ruud van Nistelrooij looked ahead to the match on Wednesday.

On Wednesday it was announced that first goalkeeper Walter Benítez had been injured the day before. A loss, says Van Nistelrooij. “Walter has played everything, has been important and has brought stability. It’s a downer that he can’t play. On the other hand, we also have a top second goalkeeper in Joël Drommel – I can’t even call him that, I prefer to speak of two first goalkeepers. He can now show what he can do, and that is a lot.”

“Drommel has played two cup matches and a Europa League match,” says Van Nistelrooij. “So that’s not much. He has as much rhythm as he could have and that’s a good thing.”

“He has to be there now. And I have every confidence in Joel’s qualities. He has done well in the games he has played so far. He also brings out the best in himself every day during training. That is why we are convinced of its qualities. It is terrible for Walter that we have lost him because he has done very well. But the confidence in Joël and his qualities is there,” says the coach.

It is not clear when Benítez will be back. “We agree with the player how we communicate about this, so we do not put a date on it. And rightly so, because the player is about his health and what comes out concerning his medical data.”

Dick Advocaat

Dick Advocaat, now head coach of ADO Den Haag, returns to the Philips Stadium for the cup match. A special encounter for Van Nistelrooij. “I played under Advocaat, and worked with him for the Dutch national team, then we were both assistant trainers under Danny Blind. He is a great trainer and great person. We are a bit apart in terms of experience, but it is nice to face each other tomorrow.”

“I always find him very clear and clear in his point of view. You can always see that in the teams he has trained. He has won a European Cup with Zenit St. Petersburg, he has trained national teams, World Cups and European Championships to his name. He is one of the greatest Dutch trainers ever. And he has done well everywhere, he has, so to speak, had the entire Eredivisie under his wing. As a player I always enjoyed working with him. He is very clear, communicates clearly, and he is a blood fanatic.”

Muziekgebouw organizes benefit concert for Turkey and Syria

A benefit concert for Turkey and Syria will be held in the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven on 11 March. The proceeds from the concert will go entirely to Turkey and Syria, where the earthquake caused enormous damage last month.

The Philips Harmonie Orkest and Music from the Orient will play Turkish, Kurdish, Greek and Balkan songs that evening. In addition, the Turkish composers Ulvi Cemal Erkin and Fazil Say can also be heard. The tickets for the benefit concert cost 22.50 euros. Proceeds will be donated to Giro 555.

It is not the first benefit evening organised in Eindhoven. On Wednesday evening, Theo Maassen and Henry van Loon, among others, played in the Parktheater to raise money for the victims of the earthquake.

Information about bilingual secondary education in English

Eindhoven News and Microlab invite the parents of groups 7 & 8 to attend the information evening and panel discussion on Thursday, 2 March, at Microlab.

International parents whose children grow up in the Netherlands are often at crossroads about the education path of their children. Should the children be global and attend an international school or follow a bilingual curriculum or switch to a Dutch way of education? The choice of bilingual education is a recent addition and hence adds to the parents’ challenge of making the best choice for their children.

Even if there is a clear choice, the next aspect is whether the child can adapt and the challenges of choosing one over the other. Questions, questions, questions and the search for better answers has fuelled Eindhoven News to initiate this discussion and information evening. Microlab, an organisation that actively participates in the growth of the region, supports this initiative by hosting this evening. The event will start with a presentation on the secondary education system in the Netherlands. A big thank you to the participating schools, Heerbeeck college (Best), Stedelijk college (Eindhoven) and Sondervick college (Veldhoven).  Thank you to the SKPO group of schools and the SALTO group of schools for actively encouraging the participation of parents. You can attend this event for free.

At 107 years old, Hinke is the oldest in Eindhoven: ‘A lot of sports and staying busy’

The liberation of Eindhoven, the construction of the Evoluon and the establishment of the Drents Dorp. The average resident has heard of these from the history books, but Hinke Klaver-De Vries has experienced them all. At 107 years old, she is the oldest resident of the city.

“Work out a lot and stay busy,” she sums up her secret to a long life. It was not always an easy life. In 1930 she moved with her parents from Leeuwarden to Eindhoven. Her father had got a job at Philips. However, there was one condition: one of the children also had to work in the factory. So it happened that Hinke was already working in the light bulb factory on Emmasingel at the age of 14.

Child labor

She had to measure the contact points of the light bulbs. A seemingly simple task, but the bar was set high. “We as newcomers had to do 7,000 a day, while the experienced employees didn’t even reach 6,000. Just child labour,” she sighs.

Eight years later, her working life came to a temporary end. She married her beloved Jan Klaver. In those days getting married meant she had to stop working. However, sitting still was and is not something for the oldest inhabitant of Eindhoven. In the years that followed, Hinke became a handball instructor and gave swimming lessons. In her own words, she taught ‘half of Eindhoven’ to swim.

Royal award 

It wasn’t until she was in her late eighties that she decided to slow down in physical sports, as the 107-year-old had now discovered games on the tablet. With Wordfeud, online scrabble, she still shows her granddaughters ‘a tough match’. “It’s a pity that she still beats us, but we wish her success,” says granddaughter Janine Jongepier with a smile.

Hinke is not only successful in mind sports. Now in nursing home Peppelrode, Hinke can look back on a successful life as well, receiving a royal decoration for her efforts as a swimming teacher in 1996.

PSV halves capacity of visitors seating section at Philips Stadium

PSV has decided, effective immediately, to halve the amount of supporters who can enter the Philips Stadium’s visitors seating section. The construction is not sturdy enough to support large groups of jumping supporters.

An investigation revealed that. If large groups of supporters and at the same time jump rhythmically, the construction can fail. The investigation was initiated after a game against NEC in October 2021, the outbox partially collapsed.

Because of the investigators’ conclusions, PSV decided to have the entire stadium investigated. This revealed that the visitors seating section could potentially be damaged, the rest of the stadium is safe, PSV announced.

To make the visitors seating section section safe again for full capacity, adjustments must be made to the current construction, Philips Stadium director Sjors van den Boogaart announced. The capacity restriction does not affect the match against Sevilla, FC Twente, which visits at the weekend, cannot bring all away supporters, however.

“We opt immediately for a temporary solution in the form of a capacity restriction, a reinforcement and in the meantime we continue to work on a permanent solution. Sevilla will come to Eindhoven on Thursday with a limited number of fans so there is no problem, as it fits within the adjusted capacity. For the match against FC Twente we unfortunately cannot accommodate all the guests from Enschede”, Van den Boogaart said.

Theo Maassen and Parktheater organise a benefit evening for Giro555

On Wednesday evening, March 1, a benefit evening will be organized in the Park theatre for Giro555 to help victims of the earthquake in Syria and Turkey.

The initiative comes from the Parktheater together with Theo Maassen. Maassen will also perform in the evening. Comedians Henry van Loon and Sezgin Güleç will make an appearance; other artists will be announced later.

The tickets for the evening cost in line with the charity for which the money is collected 55.50 euros. In addition to the ticket revenues, the catering income also goes to Giro555. The artists perform selflessly. Tickets for the benefit evening are for sale on the Parktheater website .

The playground of primary school ‘t Slingertouw in Meerhoven is full of tables with Turkish delicacies on Wednesday afternoon. In this way, the school wants to collect money for victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

It’s set up in three days, and the tables are full of food. “Everyone is so involved. When I came up with the idea, everyone was already ready,” says Sultan Tuter-Deniz, one of the organizers of the event who works at the school. “More than forty mothers have registered. They really wanted to make something and donate the money.”

Children

Not only the parents of the students want to help, the children themselves are also very involved. “The children themselves had already started collecting bottles, baking cupcakes, you name it. All kinds of initiatives. Then we decided to do something together as a school,” says Sultan Tuter-Deniz.

‘t Slingertouw is an international school. Many children have a Turkish background. “I’m Turkish myself and so many people died there,” says a young student. “I want to help them as much as possible,” he says. Another young girl also thinks it’s important to help. “It’s so bad that people are in danger there and we’re just playing here,” she says about why she thinks it’s so important to raise money.

Tasty

The delicacies are sure to please. Groups of people are waiting at each table to buy some food. “It’s a good way to raise money,” says a parent who has already bought some treats. “We have good food, and the victims of the earthquake receive money for help. It is an important goal.”

This new Eindhoven coffee shop is partly run by people with dementia

At first glance, Smaakmakers in Woensel-West seems like your average coffee shop, but it isn’t. In this newly opened business people with dementia help in the operation. A group of vulnerable people, who are close to the heart of the owners.

The family behind Smaakmakers was itself affected by the disease. Founder Jolande Verbakel experienced up close how her father dealt with the consequences of dementia. However, he wasn’t the type to give up. “My father still wanted to be important,” explains Jolande. However, that turned out to be easier said than done. “Many things that are organized for people with dementia do not suit everyone. My father didn’t want to do crafts or shuffleboard, but still be useful.”

From workshop to coffee shop

It didn’t give her the idea to start a coffee shop yet. That only came later through her daughter and co-founder, Melissa de Laat. She worked in dementia care and organized cooking workshops for people suffering from the disease. The blissful reactions of participants left a taste for more. “I wanted to do something like this more often,” Melissa begins. Brainstorming began. “At first I thought about a catering company, but in the end I decided to start my own coffee shop together with my mother, who worked in the catering industry.”

Smaakmakers became reality through a crowdfunding campaign. The pair raised more than forty thousand euros. The opening of the coffee shop on Edisonplein took place last Saturday. With their own company, the two hope to get people with dementia out of the doldrums.

“You notice in people who are diagnosed that they become very passive, because they think they can no longer do something.” Her daughter adds: “Of course the disease will get worse, but we focus on the period before that. When they can still do a lot.”

Employee of the first hour

An employee (with dementia) from the very beginning is Ellie. She has only had a few working days, but she can no longer live without the company. “It’s very nice here. I don’t want to leave here,” she says with a smile on her face. “I do all kinds of things. For example, if I see something lying around, I clean it up.”

One thing the employees suffering from amnesia are not allowed to do is take orders. This is done via a QR code or at the cash register. “We don’t want it to be too stressful for them. It’s also okay if they bring an order to the wrong table. We also count on a little understanding from the guests.”

Costumes, beer, music and confetti. The ideal recipe for a successful party. During the Lampegatse Federatiebal* (lampegat federation ball), the kickoff was given for the Eindhoven carnaval (carnival).

Due to corona, the party could not be celebrated for years, and it showed among the visitors. Ivo Soetens, chairman of the Federatiebal, says: ”It is more popular than ever. People want to be together again. Tickets were always sold out quickly but now there seems to be even more demand”.

Sinterklaas visits the ball
People have dressed up immensely for the festivities. For example, there is a Sinterklaas who “didn’t realise” that carnaval has really started now. There are also men dressed as construction men. ”We worked hard on the construction site today so now we get to celebrate extensively”, one of the men said.

During the ball, the new prince was also presented: Thijs Scheffers will be Prins (prince) Kachelaan for the next few weeks.

Just over a week and then carnival will start again. There are plenty of parties and parades planned in the Eindhoven region, so here is a schedule of some of the expected events taking place: 

Eindhoven

Just like last year, there are large tents on three squares in Eindhoven. The Bavaria Bierhal is located on Stadhuisplein. A different activity takes place here every day, including three hours of Weijer, mini tie children’s carnival and stepping.

There is also a tent on the Markt. Every day, artists such as Lamme Frans, Monique Smit and Vieze Jack take the stage here. The tent is especially popular among the youth. The third tent is on the Wilhelminaplein. This is mainly for the public who are fans of the more traditional Eindhoven carnival.

The grand parade of Lampegat is on February 18. This starts at 12:41 with the children’s running groups.

Mierlo

In Mierlo there are two carnival associations that provide a full program. CV De Kersepit organizes four evenings with performances in café De Koffer. There is a children’s carnival on Sunday and Monday afternoon.

CV De Spruwwejagers also provides a multi-day programme. Various artists, including Jan Biggel and Geen Stempel will perform in ‘t Mierles Huukske. On Monday morning you can hang out with an egg sandwich. To conclude, they organize an evening eating herring on Saturday 25 February.

The big parade of Mierlo is on Carnival Saturday. This time the motto of the parade is: Wai dreije wir!

Geldrop

Also in Geldrop there is no sitting still during carnival. Carnival starts there on Friday afternoon with music by DJ Roel.

On Saturday and Sunday evening, various artists will perform at Heerenhuys 23. Monday afternoon it’s time to pull out the farmer’s smock. Then there is a farmer’s smock afternoon.

The Geldrop parade can be seen on Sunday afternoon.

Waalre

In Waalre they start early. Friday morning at 08:30 Youth Prince Levi and Prince Giel will visit various schools in Aalst, Waalre and Veldhoven. In the evening, Prince Giel and Erik d’n twidde will tap the first keg of Dommelsch Carnival beer during the twinning of Keiengat and Bremspoersengat.

On Sunday afternoon there is a masquerade ball and on Monday evening various mop orchestras will perform in the Oude Toren. The big parade of Waalre is on Saturday. Afterwards there will be music in the Oude Toren.

Nuenen

Nuenen caters for all ages. The senior carnival ball will start on Friday afternoon. People over 50 are welcome to enjoy live music, singing and dancing.

For the children there is a children’s carnival in the monastery on Saturday and Monday afternoon. There is also plenty to do for teenagers. A five-day teenage carnival is organized in the Residence.

After two years of no parade due to corona, it will continue this year. That’s on Sunday afternoon.

Veldhoven

In Veldhoven, carnival celebrations start on Friday evening with the real sing-along during Echt Veldhovenz Luidkeels. The children’s parade is on Saturday. After the procession, the key to the city is handed over.

The grand parade of Rommelgat can be seen on Sunday. The key to the city will be returned on Tuesday evening.
