Rainy summer doesn’t dampen fun

Rain, wind and cold. The weather this summer is not the weather hoped for. Still, day trippers and tourists are enjoying themselves in the Eindhoven region.

The disappointing weather is not stopping tourists from exploring downtown Eindhoven. “I love summer, even if the weather is a little less”, a tourist from Switzerland says. “We are still doing what we wanted to do”. Another tourist is also having a great time, even though she has changed her plans a bit. “I can’t do everything, but there’s some very good shopping to be done in Eindhoven”.

Prehistoric Village

At the PreHistorisch Dorp, visitors also keep coming. A family from Utrecht is having a great time. “It’s a mindset. We decided it’s fine weather for outdoor activities. We are enjoying ourselves”, one woman says. Her children are having a good time. “As long as there are puddles to stomp in and acorns to pick up, they’re all fine. With young children, this weather is better than forty degrees”.

Yvonne Lammers-Keijsers, who spends two months living like a woman in the Middle Ages, finds it as cozy as ever: “We have fires lit everywhere and all kinds of activities that can also be done indoors or under a canopy”, she says. “Even though it rains, it’s actually very ‘gezellig”. Her temporary lifestyle does present a slightly bigger challenge, though: “Clothes get dirty sooner, and it’s harder to get them dry. You can only do that with a fire, and then it smells like smoke again”, she explains.

Camp

For most people, the weather doesn’t matter much, but some still regret it. “I do hate it”,  a boy from Belgium, who is at camp, says. “We wanted to do a lot of fun things that we can’t do because of the rain. We have to bike a lot so we are constantly soaking wet”.

Last week, visitors to campsites in the region didn’t let the disappointing weather get them off the hook either. The rain will continue for now.

Tribute to first female counsellor

Few know who she is, Janna van Bekkum-van Gorkum. Yet she has been of great significance in Eindhoven. She was the first woman on the city council exactly 100 years ago. Her great-granddaughter and the municipality are now reflecting on that.

Van Bekkem-van Gorkum was a member of the municipal council from 1923 to 1926, not long after women’s suffrage was introduced. She was an ambitious woman. In addition to political work for the Social Democratic Workers’ Party (SDAP), she was also the mother of four children in a socialist family.

Pride

“I am very proud of my great-grandmother. It was very special what she did, in a real man’s world at the time. I am proud of her ideas, perseverance and ambition. She was also a very sweet mother,” says great-grandchild Inge Wessels.

GLOW unleashed again !

0

Fans of GLOW can indulge again. The light festival kicked off to great acclaim past weekend. This time, the artworks can be admired not only in Eindhoven, but also in Geldrop-Mierlo, Best, Waalre and Oirschot. “It’s just enjoyable with all those colours, lights and music,” says the artist.

For the occasion, parks, squares and buildings have been transformed into works of art. There are 24 to admire on the five-kilometre route through downtown Eindhoven. According to one visitor, it takes some searching. “You walk with the crowd. It’s a pity it’s not better marked, but you get there in the end.”

Saturday night was not only the kick-off of GLOW, but also the opening of the carnival season. That was obviously priority number one for the carnival revellers, but even that group couldn’t resist taking a look anyway. “I am choosing Elluf Elluf today, but next week I will come back and check out GLOW. I’m so curious about the rest.”

Those who intend to visit the light festival too can do so until next Saturday. This year, the lights do not go out at 10pm, but at 11pm.

Eindhoven – the new hub for the Indian startups

Diplomatic relations between India and the Netherlands was established in 1947 and has been cordial and friendly ever since. In the more recent past, trade and investment have become the dominant themes in their bilateral ties. Today, the Netherlands is a significant trade and investment partner of India.

This partnership got a tremendous boost as the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, paid a state visit to India on 24 and 25 May. This visit sought to maximise the potential of the economic and commercial partnership between the two countries. It was a high-level business delegation comprising of four cabinet ministers, 125 companies representatives, and about 220 business participants that focused on strengthening the relations in agriculture, smart cities, healthcare, water management, and Research and Technology.

Lars de Vries, Senior Project Manager, India (BOM Foreign Investments), which is based in Eindhoven,  joined Prime Minister Rutte on his visit to India for the largest Trade mission ever. His company recognises Eindhoven as a hub for Indian companies. We believe in cooperation and our region has a strong connection with India. With the city of Eindhoven being the hometown of Philips, which has also been present in India for the past 100 years, many IT companies have found their business relations with the front-runners in co-creation,’ he explains.

Eindhoven, as we know, is home to over 140 companies and institutions, comprising over 10.000 product developers, researchers, and entrepreneurs and an estimated 85 nationalities. Global companies in the Brainport region like NXP and TOMTOM have a long-standing and committed histories with India. Eindhoven, which is rated as the smartest region in the world, focusses on high tech, mobility, and design. “A few examples of companies from Brabant that joined this mission are Litevax, Eindhoven Medical Robotics, NXP, PAL-V, Schouten Europe, and MTD. Many relevant people from the Indo-Dutch network joined this mission, such as the NICCT, Assocham, as well as my acquisition colleagues from Rotterdam Partners, The Hague Business, and Amsterdam in Business,’ adds Mr De Vries.

He also mentions that the Dutch business environment is conductive for start-ups. “The Eindhoven company, Eindhoven Medical Robotics, is a great example of this. It provides advanced knowledge and technologies, assisting surgeons to do the impossible with their RoboSculpt, which has the ability to navigate autonomously during high precision bone surgery. A very promising technology start-up, which intends to ramp up to a 1.000+ people team, utilising the collaborative R&D network between the Netherlands and India, using the scale of the market that India offers.”

Anupam Nayak and Jordan Bos from Eindhoven Medical Robotics were also invited by RVO to join the Dutch trade mission to India. Together with their team, they have an ambitious plan to make EM Robotics a world leader in high precision surgical robots. They have a partnership agreement with TU/e. “Igniting young minds of surgeons by training them with the latest in technology and giving them an opportunity to join us back here in Eindhoven, also opens up diverse avenues for future educational and business collaborations,” Anupam explains. Anupam is the COO of Eindhoven Medical Robotics and founded the company along with Prof. Maarten Steinbuch. “Currently, all engineering and manufacturing are located in Eindhoven with pre-clinical tests and human trials being set up worldwide,” she informs us with enthusiasm. She earnestly believes that, “The power of joining forces with the Dutch initiatives in India will surely enable us to expand our presence in the fastest growing healthcare markets of the world.”

More and more Dutch people are choosing to start a business in emerging markets such as India. They do this not only because there are many economic opportunities there, but also because this is stimulated by the government.

Indian startups have registered notable growth in sectors like Fintech, logistics, medical science, and e-commerce. “Out of the 200 Indian companies in the Netherlands, our small region hosts almost 30 companies from India including the large corporates like Wipro, Infosys BPO, Cognizant, Tata Steel Tubes, RF Solutions, Banco Products, and many other small and innovative firms like Forthcode, and Intech DMLS which are now expanding to Eindhoven,’ explains Mr de Vries. “During this Trade mission, I focused on meeting as many Indian companies with a presence in Brabant, who have current projects and new companies that might be interested in establishing in our region. We wanted to make sure that we became recognised as a hub for Indian companies. ”

Italian? Your kids can come enjoy a story at the library

Are your children Italian or do they understand the language? Then Eindhoven Library and the Eindhoven Italian School invite them to come to Raccontastorie (Storytelling) on Sunday afternoons.

These two institutions have partnered up. Children and their families can participate in various activities – in Italian – at the library. These include readings, improvisations, theatre, and creative activities.

Eindhoven’s Italian School, “La Lampadina”, was created to sparking enthusiasm and stimulating interest in the Italian culture and language. It is aimed at young, school-aged children. This is done by developing their Italian language skills and confidence in communication.

Reading activities for the kids

The school’s weekly Italian lessons have been a great success. This success is why “La Lampadina” will now offer six to ten-year-olds a further opportunity to discover Italian traditions and culture – a series of reading activities at the library.

It is a well-known fact that reading is one of the most powerful learning tools. It can provide knowledge and, at the same time, enrich language development. The books used in the reading activities will explore various topics. These include not only the classics of mythology and fables. There will also be educational stories about the environment. And closer to the end of the year, Christmas stories.

Each event will include a creative activity following the reading. This will allow the children to use their imaginations and have some fun. The programme, as a whole, will provide children with cultural and linguistic tools. These tools are to strengthen their identity as bilingual speakers and, ultimately, as confident global citizens.

The first of these free events is this Sunday, 27 October. Then they will be on 3 and 24 November and 8 and 22 December. The activities will all run from 15:00 to 16:00 at the Library in the Witte Dame.

For more information on ‘La Lampadina’s’ ongoing initiatives and projects, please visit their website.

Ode to Eindhoven street preacher with new beer ‘Goeie Arnol’

Rabauw Brewery pays tribute to Eindhoven city preacher Arnol Kox with a new beer, called ‘Goeie Arnol’ (Good Arnol). “Despite the fact that he was not always understood by everyone, he was able to find his place in society”.

Gerry Diederen, Arnol’s widow, will receive the first can. “I was very surprised”, Gerry says. “It is a great initiative and I think Arnol would have found this very funny. It’s nice to hear that people still remember him”.

Ode
Rabauw wants to pay tribute to the city preacher with the beer. “In our brewery we offer a place to people with a weaker position in society. Arnol was not always understood by everyone and did not have an obvious place in society. Despite that, he was able to find his angle”, Joyce de Vaan, van Rabauw, says.

Design
Tattoo artist Robbert of Twentytwo Tatto created the design of the can. “On the tin, Arnol is surrounded by well-known Eindhoven buildings such as Evoluon and Witte Dame”, Joyce says. “How exactly the design will look will remain a secret for a while, but Arnol will be prominently featured”.

The taste of the beer is striking. “It’s Wee Heavy. That’s an 8.4 per cent dark ale with a caramel-like flavour”.

First can
On Good Friday, Gerry will receive the first can at Brewpub Rabauw on Strijp-S. “I am very curious”, Gerry says. “Normally I never drink actually and when I drink it is 0.0. I’m so used to that, because Arnol couldn’t drive”.

TU/e and NXP join forces

Eindhoven University of Technology is going to collaborate with NXP. University and company want to develop a new, promising communication technology. To this end, the parties signed an agreement on Wednesday.

From NXP, specialists from the company will work together with scientists from the Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute. Both parties will make data, knowledge, students and employees available for the cooperation.

Together, the chipmaker and TU/e want to get a new “groundbreaking” technology off the ground, using frequencies above 300 gigahertz. Current technologies that try to make use of these high frequencies perform unevenly, TU/e says.

“TU/e is known for its pioneering work in the field of wireless communications, an area essential to the strategic sovereignty of both the Netherlands and Europe. NXP has been an important partner in this field for many years,” reveals CEO Robert-Jan Smits.

Track record

“Cooperation with leading universities is an integral part of NXP’s innovation strategy,” said Lars Reger, vice president of NXP.

“Eindhoven University of Technology’s proven track record in collaboration with industry gives us full confidence to expand our collaboration. This will lead to new innovations in communication technologies and advanced driver assistance systems, an area in which NXP is a world leader in semiconductors.”

Collaboration

This is the second time in a short time that TU/e has entered into a partnership with a major player in the Brainport region. Earlier it was announced that ASML is investing in the university, building a clean room there, among other things.
