De Brassers work hard to get float finished on time

0

In a shed in Veldhoven, the members of carnival (carnaval) association De Brassers work hard every evening. Another week and a half and then their float for the Lampegat parade must be ready.

Glueing and varnishing. That’s what the members are doing right now. And that means the necessary stress, so shortly before the carnaval festivities begin. Studio040 took a look at the work:

CV De Brassers: meaning: carnival association the mess makers. They are working hard to get ready their float on time for the carnival parade on Sunday 19 February in Veldhoven.

“It is cold but it is very nice to work together on the float. With some drinks and snacks and a laugh it is very ‘gezellig’. Evening after evening we are here.”

Together with wall paper glue, old telephone directories are the most popular material to build up the statues for the float. “They don’t produce them anymore so we use them sparingly”.

“We like to keep it a secret how our float will look like. Come to the float parade in Veldhoven and you will see it.”

In the whole of the Netherlands but mostly in Brabant and Limburg there are carnival floats (optocht) during ‘Carnaval’ (17-21 February). There all cities and villages have their own parade made by local carnival associations or groups. Here you can have a look per town.

Queen to open renovated Van Gogh museum

0

Formerly known as the Vincentre, the Van Gogh Village Museum in Nuenen will officially reopen next month, after extensive renovations, by Queen Máxima.

The museum is dedicated to the Nuenen period of the world-famous Brabant master painter. The exhibition highlights the development Van Gogh went through in Nuenen on the basis of his studies and sketches. Temporary exhibitions will also be organized in the museum in the future.

New museum

The renovated museum has a modern design, but with many references to the history and old village life. In addition, a new department will be added to the renovated museum: Vincent’s Light Lab. In collaboration with ASML, the light lab investigates how Van Gogh experimented with light and colour. There are also opportunities for young visitors to experiment with light and color themselves.

Máxima has already visited the region twice in the past six months. In November she visited VDL, earlier this year she visited Eindhoven designers.

May 16 is the official opening of the museum, but the doors will open a month earlier. The renovated museum will open its doors to visitors on April 20.

KNWU top competition BMX at Lion d’Or in Valkenswaard

A national BMX competition will take place at FCC Lion d’Or in Valkenswaard next Sunday. About seven hundred BMX cyclists from all over the Netherlands will compete for the day’s victory as well as points for the NK (Dutch championships), EC (European championships) and WC (world championships). It is the third race in a series of eight.

The national competition will be held over three days. Practice sessions, where riders can get used to the track and the starting gate, are on Friday evening, 5 May, and Saturday, 6 May. On Sunday, 7 May, starting at 11:00, everyone will race three heats. After that, the eighth-, quarter-, semis and finals will take place.

In addition, points will be distributed. If riders have accumulated enough points during the season, they have a chance to participate in the NK (2 July in Venlo), the EC (on 9 July in Besançon, France) and the WC (in August in Glasgow, Scotland). A number of FCC Lion d’Or riders are already working hard to reach that standard.

The FCC Lion d’Or track is located on Monseigneur Smetsstraat in Valkenswaard.

Cinema stops Indian film after staff are harrassed

Eindhoven cinema LAB-1 has stopped ticket sales for the Indian film The Kerala Story. This happened after employees of the cinema were harassed, including on social media, email and by phone, by unknown people.

According to a spokesperson for the cinema, the messages took on an “intimidating and threatening” character, writes Omroep Brabant. It was then decided to stop ticket sales for the film. The film had been running in cinemas for a fortnight and was to be shown for the last time on Sunday.

The Indian film The Kerala Story is about a group of Muslim women from the Indian state of Kerala who convert to Islam and then join terror group Islamic State.

‘On the edge’

According to the cinema spokesperson, the film has been running for several weeks without any problems. “Since the beginning of this week, we have been increasingly approached and harassed from the Muslim world who are apparently opposed to this film. The tone of the messages changed and when staff members were also approached personally, a limit was reached for us. Since we value the safety of our staff and visitors, we have withdrawn the film from programming.”

The tone of the messages in the apps, emails and on social media was “on the edge”, according to the spokesperson, also the messages in question became more frequent and intense. “They knew how far they could go,” said the cinema spokesperson. These included messages saying, “We wouldn’t want there to be any hassle or violence at your doorstep, would we?”

The cinema removed all information about the film from its website and reported it to the police. “There have also been consultations about the film and the threats with police and public administration, among others,” he said.

Not out of touch

Opponents say the film oversimplifies and exaggerates how women in Kerala eventually joined IS. It is also said that the film tries to pit Hindus and the Muslims in India against each other. Despite this, the film is a big hit in India and raised nearly 58 million so far.

LAB-1 screens Indian films almost weekly and was willing to show the film as usual despite all the fuss. “We do that because of the international nature of our audience. We stand for cultural diversity where we are guided by artistic and creative expression,” the cinema said in a statement. “Art and culture sometimes produce controversial dilemmas and discussions. That is also part of culture and should be reason for dialogue and discussion. Not to threats and intimidation. We will carry on and not let ourselves be put out of action.”

Neighbourhood association voted for social award

Neighbourhood association Gehurterbij (you belong with us) finished fifth in the public vote for the ‘Appeltje van Oranje’ award (apple of Oranje). The volunteer club from Son en Breugel brings together neighbourhood residents and the residents of SWZ Zonhove, an institution for people with severe multiple disabilities.

However, the competition is not over yet. Next Saturday an online ‘pitch round’ will follow, in which the contenders will present their project. After this it will be clear which ten nominees have reached the final round and are therefore competing for an Appeltje van Oranje*.

These are awarded every year by the Oranje Fonds (Oranje fund). Eligible are social projects that successfully connect different groups of people and ensure that they participate in society again. The theme for 2023 is ‘Bruggenbouwers in de buurt’ (‘bridge builders in the neighbourhood’).

The winner will receive a sum of €25,000 and a bronze statuette made by Princess Beatrix. The award is presented each year by the patroness of the Oranje Fonds, Queen Máxima. In anniversary years, King Willem-Alexander presents the award.

Participating in society

The Son neighbourhood association Gehurterbij actively involves Zonhove residents in the neighbourhood and organises joint activities, such as the Easter brunch, village quiz, neighbourhood lunch, Christmas parade and the garage sale. This gives them a chance to participate in society in an ordinary way.

For many this is special, but for Gehurterbij it is natural, chairman Jos Hölscher said. “We do it mainly because we enjoy it ourselves and the connection in the neighbourhood with both neighbours and residents of Zonhove feels good”.

IVN distributes 750 trees and shrubs in Geldrop-Mierlo

Geldrop-Mierlo will get more greenery again early next month. This will happen at the De Paardestal (the horse stable) in Geldrop and ‘t Klokhuis (core) in Mierlo. Volunteers will also plant two bird forests and a shrub hedge on Elsbroekpad in Geldrop.

Councillor Frans Stravers will symbolically plant the first tree. Local residents can also make use of the initiative. For example, IVN (institute for nature education and sustainability) Geldrop is giving away 500 pieces of planting material and IVN Mierlo is giving away 250 plants. This concerns nine types of native plants, all of which attract different animals. Members who are not members of the IVN can also get those.

Goal

During the previous edition in March, a public garden was given away for planting trees. These plants survived the previous drought quite well.

The objective of the national ‘Plan Boom’ (tree plan), of which the initiative in Geldrop-Mierlo is part of, is to plant 10 million extra trees throughout the Netherlands. In Brabant this concerns 1 million plants and trees.

Municipality of Son en Breugel and Parish to open parsonage garden

The municipality of Son en Breugel and the Parish of Heilige Oda signed an agreement of intent on Wednesday. Both parties want to involve Park Vroonhoven more in the centre of Son and develop a chapel there.

They also want to open the parsonage garden of the St. Genoveva Church in Breugel to visitors. In addition, a new parish centre is planned. This should be located in the immediate vicinity of the current parsonage and the Sint Genoveva Church. Finally, the parish council would like to see the current parish centre ‘Den Bauw’ designated as ‘residential’.

Investment

The municipality has acquired Park Vroonhoven on a long lease from the parish. This agreement will continue until 2033. Based on the coalition agreement in Son en Breugel, there is a desire to update the park and become more involved in the centre. This requires an investment from the municipality. It is therefore desirable to extend the leasehold period.

The agreement also states that a chapel can be built in Park Vroonhoven. The parish would like to further elaborate and realise this.

Parsonage garden

The parsonage garden of St. Genoveva Church is owned by the parish. The rear part is largely located in the Dommeldal. The parish is prepared to lease this part to the municipality. The parsonage garden can then be opened to visitors and be involved in the nature development of the Dommeldal.

The parish centre ‘Den Bauw’ is outdated and no longer meets current needs. ‘Den Bauw’ now has a social function, but the plan is to turn it into a residential location and to build a new parish centre in or in the immediate vicinity of the current Rectory and St. Genoveva Church.

Chinese New Year celebrated in Eindhoven

0

Chinese New Year in Eindhoven? It was celebrated with a traditional Lions’ or Dragons’ dance. And by serving and eating lots of special dishes!

This year is called the year of the Pig or Boar. The Chinese zodiac has twelve animal-signs, which change per Chinese year.

Myths

It seems, the Jade Emperor said the order in which the zodiac cycle was to be decided, would be the order in which the invited animals would arrive at his party. According to one story, Pig was late because he overslept.

Though another myth mentions, Wolf destroyed the Boar’s home. So Pig or Boar, had to rebuild his home first. Only then did he set off for the Emperor’s party. Of course, he arrived last and had to be content with twelfth place in the cycle.

Traditions

Regardless: Saturday, Chinese New Year was enthusiastically welcomed in Eindhoven. The centre of festivities was at the Eindhoven shop of Asian supermarket chain “Amazing Oriental”, at Langdonkenstraat 7. Events, free tasting sessions and Asian cooking shows are regularly organized at the shops of this chain.

The traditional Lions’ or Dragons’ dance is often accompanied by lighting fire-crackers. The dances are performed through streets and in front of shops, to chase away evil spirits and bless the area. Moreover, small red bags or envelopes containing money are also distributed.

According to one of the visitors watching the spectacle: “It’s nice to see how other cultures celebrate and welcome a New Year!”.

Thousands of Chinese call Eindhoven their home and celebrated their New Year in style. The growing high-tech sector ensures many people from Asian countries now live in the city. They share their traditions, celebrations, festivals with everybody else in Eindhoven.

Born in the year of the Boar or Pig and being teased about “oversleeping”? Remind your friends: in Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth and good fortune. Provided you believe in astrology, of course.

Park Hilaria lauded as most accessible for people with disabilities

0

Park Hilaria in Eindhoven is the most accessible event for people with walking difficulties.

The fair has been given the Gouden Duim (Golden Thumb) by the Platform Gehandicapten Beleid (Eindhoven Disability Policy Platform). In 2018, some events in Eindhoven were visited and assessed by volunteers. They looked at, among other things, parking spaces for disabled persons and a suitable access route for wheelchair users. The readability of signs from a wheelchair was also reviewed, as was the presence of accessible toilets and assistance for people with disabilities.

‘Recognition’

Of all the events visited, Park Hilaria was the best. “We are thrilled with this recognition. We have been working on the event for a number of years to make it really accessible to everyone. And that also includes the disabled. It is good that this is noticed and appreciated”, the fair’s organisers say.

The Zilveren Duim (Silver Thumb) went to the Dutch Design Week in Strijp-S. This is an incentive prize which is awarded for the first time this year.

‘Prehistorisch Dorp most child-friendly museum in Brabant’

The Prehistorisch Dorp (prehistoric village) in Eindhoven has been declared the most child-friendly museum of Noord Brabant. Over the past year, 3,500 children visited various museums in the country and gave their opinion.

The Museumkids Award has been presented for ten consecutive years. This year, the Prehistorisch Dorp narrowly missed out on the title of ‘Kidsproof museum 2022’. The Discovery Museum in Kerkrade scored 9.1 and thus 0.1 higher than the Eindhoven open air museum.

Nevertheless, Yvonne Lammers of the Prehistorisch Dorp is proud. “I think it’s great to see that our employees were able to offer such an appreciated experience in these uncertain times. A trip back to the past and away from the daily routine. This award confirms that we are doing well with the public of the future”.

In Prehistorisch Dorp, visitors go back in time. Villagers tell stories about life in prehistory or the Middle Ages. The children can practise old crafts together, such as lighting a fire or making food.
