Elderly shine during music day

On Wednesday afternoon, the festive conclusion of the ‘Music buddies’ project took place in the Parktheater. Students of Summa Social Work each had an older buddy they visited every week for 12 weeks to make music together.

The project is mainly intended to contribute to the well-being of the elderly and also to allow students of the social work course to gain practical experience. Making music is a way to spend a good time together, but a poem is also recited during the closing.

Eindhoven bakers’ strike off the table

The strikes announced earlier today at, among others, Dutch Bakery in Eindhoven, will not take place. FNV Voedingsindustrie and CNV Vakmensen on the one hand and the employers on the other have reached a last-minute negotiation result.

Part of the result is that wages will increase by sixteen percent over a period of nineteen months. Tomorrow, this result will be presented to the members in the companies that were to go on strike. Ron Vos, director FNV Voedingsindustrie: “The industrial employers have made a significantly better wage offer under the threat of strikes. Tomorrow we want to discuss this with our members.”

The proposal is to increase wages by seven percent on July 1 this year. On January 1 and July 1 of next year, another 4.5 percent will be added at a time. Further substantive agreements for in the CBA have not been made.

Relieved

Nicole Engmann-Van Eijbergen, director CNV Vakmensen: “I am relieved that the pressure of a possible strike was enough to make the employers move. They saw in time that they could not conclude yet another collective bargaining agreement at the expense of their own people. It is now up to the members to judge whether they succeeded.”

Bread factory Dutch Bakery at the Hurksestraat in Eindhoven employs a total of 75 people.

Dutch tree climbing champion: ‘experience is key’

Climbing and scrambling and, above all, not looking down. For Harrie Verbeek from Waalre it is almost daily fare. As an arborist, he is the Dutch champion tree climber and is now going for the European title.

Verbeek not only had to – literally – climb a tree for it, but also show all kinds of skills, such as pruning branches and rescuing someone. So during the NK (Dutch championships), organised by the Kring Praktiserende Boomverzorgers (circle of practicing tree wardens) – Nederlandse afdeling van de International Society of Arboriculture (Dutch branch of the International Society of Arboriculture, ISA) – the participants were judged on various components. And the Waalre citizen showed himself the best of all his colleagues in this.

Giants in Tasmania

At Landgoed (estate) Eikenburg in Eindhoven, where Verbeek is regularly at work, he demonstrates how fast he can climb a tree. “Technique is at least as important as speed. And the higher you throw your line, the better the score. After all, that’s your starting position”. The trees at Eikenburg are just dwarfs by the way, compared to the giants Verbeek has conquered in, say, Tasmania. “One was 95 metres high”.

Experience

It’s certainly not a piece of cake, the Waalre arborist acknowledges, because you’re climbing into a living object. “It is experience mostly. If you’re just starting this, you have to get used to it. You’re in a tree, which moves and bends. And you’re at quite a height, so it has to become second nature. We are very conscious about what we do and through that you remove the risks for the most part”.

Verbeek will travel to Slovakia at the end of June, to participate in the European Championships. He would like to become European champion, because the winner gets to go to the World Championships in Atlanta, United States, next year.

Cinema stops Indian film after staff are harrassed

Eindhoven cinema LAB-1 has stopped ticket sales for the Indian film The Kerala Story. This happened after employees of the cinema were harassed, including on social media, email and by phone, by unknown people.

According to a spokesperson for the cinema, the messages took on an “intimidating and threatening” character, writes Omroep Brabant. It was then decided to stop ticket sales for the film. The film had been running in cinemas for a fortnight and was to be shown for the last time on Sunday.

The Indian film The Kerala Story is about a group of Muslim women from the Indian state of Kerala who convert to Islam and then join terror group Islamic State.

‘On the edge’

According to the cinema spokesperson, the film has been running for several weeks without any problems. “Since the beginning of this week, we have been increasingly approached and harassed from the Muslim world who are apparently opposed to this film. The tone of the messages changed and when staff members were also approached personally, a limit was reached for us. Since we value the safety of our staff and visitors, we have withdrawn the film from programming.”

The tone of the messages in the apps, emails and on social media was “on the edge”, according to the spokesperson, also the messages in question became more frequent and intense. “They knew how far they could go,” said the cinema spokesperson. These included messages saying, “We wouldn’t want there to be any hassle or violence at your doorstep, would we?”

The cinema removed all information about the film from its website and reported it to the police. “There have also been consultations about the film and the threats with police and public administration, among others,” he said.

Not out of touch

Opponents say the film oversimplifies and exaggerates how women in Kerala eventually joined IS. It is also said that the film tries to pit Hindus and the Muslims in India against each other. Despite this, the film is a big hit in India and raised nearly 58 million so far.

LAB-1 screens Indian films almost weekly and was willing to show the film as usual despite all the fuss. “We do that because of the international nature of our audience. We stand for cultural diversity where we are guided by artistic and creative expression,” the cinema said in a statement. “Art and culture sometimes produce controversial dilemmas and discussions. That is also part of culture and should be reason for dialogue and discussion. Not to threats and intimidation. We will carry on and not let ourselves be put out of action.”

TU/e and NXP join forces

Eindhoven University of Technology is going to collaborate with NXP. University and company want to develop a new, promising communication technology. To this end, the parties signed an agreement on Wednesday.

From NXP, specialists from the company will work together with scientists from the Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute. Both parties will make data, knowledge, students and employees available for the cooperation.

Together, the chipmaker and TU/e want to get a new “groundbreaking” technology off the ground, using frequencies above 300 gigahertz. Current technologies that try to make use of these high frequencies perform unevenly, TU/e says.

“TU/e is known for its pioneering work in the field of wireless communications, an area essential to the strategic sovereignty of both the Netherlands and Europe. NXP has been an important partner in this field for many years,” reveals CEO Robert-Jan Smits.

Track record

“Cooperation with leading universities is an integral part of NXP’s innovation strategy,” said Lars Reger, vice president of NXP.

“Eindhoven University of Technology’s proven track record in collaboration with industry gives us full confidence to expand our collaboration. This will lead to new innovations in communication technologies and advanced driver assistance systems, an area in which NXP is a world leader in semiconductors.”

Collaboration

This is the second time in a short time that TU/e has entered into a partnership with a major player in the Brainport region. Earlier it was announced that ASML is investing in the university, building a clean room there, among other things.

New Mayor: ‘Son and Breugel suits us’

A fresh wind is blowing through Son en Breugel since new Mayor Suzanne Otters-Bruijnen took office. Soon she will move from Vught with her husband and four children  to settle in her new municipality.

Suzanne Otters-Bruijnen is the successor to Hans Gailard who was Mayor of Son en Breugel for the past twenty years. Both VVD politicians, but Otters-Bruijnen does have a different style. “My focus is also on women in top positions. I want to set an example for other women and girls, to show how they can develop. I am also focused on young people, just like the city council, I want to involve young people in decision making”. The latter will sometimes be quite a challenge, since there are not many young people to be seen out and about in Son en Breugel..

The new Mayor has an immaculate career in public administration behind her, apart from a faux pas: a tweet she posted about six years ago. When theme park De Efteling was discredited because of the alleged racist theme behind its attractions, Otters-Bruijnen tweeted a photo of her dessert: ‘white custard with negro kisses’.* It was intended to support the Efteling, but it was not to everyone’s liking. The tweet brought Otters-Bruijnen a lot of comments. Both negative and positive comments, by the way.

Brainport Region

Son en Breugel has both the green village character and the economic activity. A versatility that Otters is proud of. “This gives Son en Breugel something unique. I am from Waalre myself, also a municipality with an active club life and a clear link to the Brainport Region. The success of this region is the cooperation between the various municipalities. If we can be in touch with each other and together achieve the things we want to achieve with regards to the societal challenges, that is wonderful”.

* Before 2005, the offensive name ‘Negroes’ kisses’ was used for a certain type of  confectionary. Since 2005, they have been called ‘Chocolate kisses’, or simply ‘Kisses’. Explanation added by Greta for EN, with apologies.

Concerti Fetti back in Eindhoven

Jan Smit, Django Wagner and Jan Biggel: these were some of the artists who performed on Wednesday evening in a full Indoor Sports Center during Concerti Fetti. The festival for people with disabilities is back in Eindhoven. A crowd of 4500 visitors sang and danced along.

The festive evening, organised by the Gehandicapten Concert Eindhoven foundation, has since become a household name in the city. The 20th edition was held in 2019, at the time still in the Beursgebouw.

“Visitors only need three notes and two words to sing along to the songs at the top of their lungs. They enjoy it as if their birthday and carnival fall on the same day,” explains Meranda de Laat of the organisation.

‘Nothing is more fun than this’

More than 100 volunteers contributed to the realisation of Concerti Fetti. “Seeing them smile: that’s what we do it for. It’s incredibly rewarding work.”
