“Daft Daf”inspires Group O to join Eureka! parade

Anyone who follows the Brabantsedag knows that for years sixteen float-building groups have participated in the biggest theatre parade of the year. But… this year there is a seventeenth participant? That’s right. This year, yet another group was triggered by the theme of Eureka!

The little club – together accounting for over 75 years of active Brabantsedag participation – are joining as Group O ( for Opening) but are not competing for any of the three prizes.

Group O call themselves ‘VEUROP l.p.g.’ and they do love a bit of whimsey. ‘Veurop’ is Brabants for ‘in front’, as they will be heading the parade. L.p.g. does not refer to the liquid gas, but stands for ‘Ludiek Parade Gezelschap’, ‘Playful Parade Company’. Their ideas started to froth over a beer in their ‘clubhouse’ on Kapelstraat and developed into an actual plan.

Comedy

These gentlemen have 75 years of combined involvement in the Brabantsedag under their belts, in a variety of constellations. After years of absence, they decided to rejoin and go for the fun.

The idea of VEUROP l.p.g., besides the well-known theatres on wheels, is to open the parade with a humorous street theatre act related to the main theme. They will not build a float, but use playacting and theatre decor to create their act.

A tribute to Variomatic

The title of their act is some indication of the level of comedy they like: they are using the epithet ‘A biddy jiggler with suspenders’ used for the ‘Daft Daf’ at the time it was still driving around. The Variomatic got this irreverent title because it was largely driven by elderly ladies.

The Variomatic was developed by DAF manufacturer Hub van Doorne and introduced in 1958, an automatic gearbox used in car manufacture in the Netherlands for the first time. Because shifting gears was supposed to be manly and women liked the Variomatic because they did not have to change gears, the DAfs were seen as cars for timid lady drivers.

Driving backwards

Because the system does not have separate gears, but one (continuously shifting) gear and a separate ‘reverse mode’ (as opposed to reverse gear), the transmission works in reverse as well, giving it the side effect that one can drive backwards as fast as forwards. As a result, in the former Dutch annual backward driving world championship, the DAFs had to be put in a separate competition because no other car could keep up. Thus, these very cheap and simple cars were the ‘formula one’ in this competition.

The group is not competing for a prize. Their ‘prize’ is in entertaining and captivating their audience. This year, as Group O, they will open the parade for the first time, directly behind the headboard. Based on a successful debut, this initiative will certainly be followed up next year and they will again be VEUROP!

New names at music festival ‘Hit The City’

The freely accessible music festival ‘Hit The City’, which takes place from 19 to 21 October in the Eindhoven city center, has more than thirty new names. It is about musical talent that is not tied to genres and that extends the liveliness of Dutch Design Week into the evening.

After a two-year break, Dutch pop sensation Naaz finds her place on stage in the Grote Zaal of the Effenaar. The Kurdish-Dutch singer made an impression earlier this year in Carré and Down The Rabbit Hole. She is joined by Dutch pop band The Inden and indie-pop virtuoso Alex Vargas, who returns to the festival with a new sound.

The basement of Dynamo is the scene of groundbreaking hip-hop on Friday nights, including the queer rap duo LIONSTORM, and UK acts Denzelf Himself and Deijuvhs, who mix hip-hop with genres ranging from horror to hardcore, punk, metal, drill or jungle. On Saturday, promising and emerging hip-hop artists will take the stage, including Latin rapper Mariposa and streaming hit acts Reanny, Lusho and Brokezart.

Cool guitar acts

With Library Card and Neighbors Burning Neighbours, Friday night in the Stroomhuis will be dedicated to the Rotterdam post-punk scene. There are cool indie and guitar acts from The Joy Hotel, Big Special, Loupe, Girl Scout and THAMES. Fans of heavier guitars can indulge themselves with raw bands like DITZ and Bad Breeding.

The fact that Hit The City explores all musical corners is reflected in the contrast between, on the one hand, contemporary and eclectic pop acts such as Yaro Mila, Guusje or DeathbyRomy and, on the other hand, the vintage 60s and 70s sound that echoes in the surf rock of The People’s Pleasure Grounds, the lush pop songs of M. Lucky or the old Arabic psychedelic rock inspired Sababa 5.

Move

Amartey’s afropop or the afrobeats of DjeuhDjoah & Lieutenant Nicholson and Yung Dada invite you to move. Neo-soul artist Sophie Faith to introspection. G-folk artist Hak Baker converts his special life story into protest music, while Porcelain id hurls her poetic lyrics into the hall.

Hit The City takes place from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 October in various venues in the Eindhoven city centre. The entire festival is free to enter.

Thousands of students in Eindhoven for introduction week

Singing songs, playing games and of course lots of partying. The introduction week started again in Eindhoven on Monday. Thousands of Fontys and TU/e students are participating. “I’m especially looking forward to getting to know my fellow students”, a young man said.

It is still quiet on Monday morning at the Fontys campsite. The future students are still seeing which way the cat jumps. Coloured shirts walk back and forth between the tents. Some youngsters are still busy inflating their air beds. It’s up to the so called “moms and dads” (focal points consisting of students) to bring in the party atmosphere.

“They’ve only just gotten to know each other, of course”, an attendant explains. “And of course it doesn’t help either that drinking is only allowed from 16:00”.

Still, even without alcohol, the students slowly begin to loosen up. Several songs are sung by the counselors about Julia’s breasts and a duckling. Meanwhile, the students are hooking up. “I thought they did well for a first day”, Joris reflects.

TU/e

A quiet start is also made on the TU/e grounds. The students play games together. For example, the mechanical engineers of the future have to make something out of duct tape. However, the introduction week is not only about games and partying.

It is also a chance to get to know the program and fellow students. “For me, it is successful when they have seen that being a student will be one of the highlights of their lives”.

Splinter Spectacle: ‘The new pool is really much better’

Whizzing down the assault course or slide or playing in the pool. In the last week of the summer vacations the Splinter Spektakel (spectacle) traditionally takes place at Speelpark (playground) de Splinter. New this year is the brand new swimming pool that has been renovated for almost eight tons of municipal money.

This year is the 38th edition and, like every year, the event will be grand. “It is typical that every year we have a water slide. That’s just part of it. It was already there at the start and it will never disappear”, Tiny Monsieurs of the Splinter explains.

Thousands of children are coming to the play park this week, according to Monsieurs, and it’s not just Eindhoven children. “We even have children coming here from Belgium or from other children’s holiday weeks in the region. They really see this as a day out and of course it is”.

New swimming pool

So lots of entertainment for the kids, and that’s just as well after a thorough renovation of the pool. The municipality has allocated nearly €800,000. And that is noted. “The slide is very nice and also the new spray park. It is really much better than the previous pool”, one of the children explained.

“Last year the pool was closed and they couldn’t swim at all. That they’ve done it like this now is really very nice”, another boy told Studio040.

Monsieurs is also happy that the pool is open again despite the delay. “We are indeed very happy about that. The kids can enjoy it extra this week, because it will be open all week during Splinter Spektakel”.

Eindhoven residents pitch tents on neighbourhood site

Since 2013, residents from all over the Netherlands have been meeting each other at De Buurtcamping (The Neighbourhood Campsite). Through this initiative some eight hundred thousand meetings were realised last year, at 53 Neighbourhood Campsites. This year there is also a Neighbourhood Campsite in Eindhoven for the first time.

Togetherness

The Jacob van Oppenheimer Park will be transformed into an actual campsite for three days. The campsite is inhabited by all the people who live in the area. This makes the Buurtcamping an inclusive meeting place for everyone. One-third of the pitches are reserved for people who live on a minimum income.

Just like on a regular campsite, you are outside a lot at the Buurtcamping and everyone is equal. Go to the toilet with a toilet roll under your arm, do the dishes together with the neighbour and borrow toothpaste. By setting up the campsite together or participating in one of the activities, residents get to know each other better during their stay at the buurtcamping.

Purpose

“The main objective of the campsite”, say campsite managers ‘De Strijp’, “is to allow people to come out of their bubble: rich and poor, with or without education, with a Dutch or non-Dutch background, everyone meets each other at the campsite! We also offer a holiday for families who otherwise wouldn’t be able to go on holiday”.

The neighbourhood campsite in Eindhoven focuses on Drents Dorp, Lievendaal and ‘t Ven. “In other words, all neighbourhoods bordering on the Jacob Oppenheimer Park. Of course, other enthusiastic residents of Strijp are also welcome.”

Neighbourhood campsite ‘De Strijp’ is open from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 August. You can register as a volunteer or reserve a pitch here.

AI-driven restaurant Bunkr preparing for a grand opening

The long-awaited day is fast approaching. The Bunkr, a restaurant controlled by Artificial Intelligence will finally open on September 1.

Robin Vromans is one of the inspired co-owners in this exciting adventure. He comes from Valkenswaard, from a hospitality family. He started his first job in the hospitality industry at the age of fifteen. He was educated at De Rooi Pannen in Eindhoven.

He worked at the Markt in Valkenswaard and at Van der Valk catering. Then he worked at Marquis Catering and even abroad, such as Monaco. Everywhere in Eindhoven he has walked with a tray, he says. He also gave bbq workshops on the Green Egg together with his brother-in-law.

Artificial intelligence

Vromans has been researching how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used in the culinary world for some time now. His interest in data and what you can do with it was further aroused when he met Tom Habraken of Anzu, a local company that applies AI and develops understandable tools.

When Youri Doreleijers, another catering entrepreneur, came into the picture, the room was quickly decided. Youri also owns the restaurants Luzt, Lighttown Brewers and the Genneper Parken pavilion in Eindhoven.

Ideal place

Together they wanted to do something new and restaurant Bunkr, under the Bunkertoren, was the perfect place for it. They want to make it the first AI-driven restaurant in the Netherlands, a place where eating really becomes an experience. Artificial intelligence is sometimes used in the hospitality industry, but not yet in the extensive way that Vromans and Dorelijers envision.

Bunkr is all about technology. This technology helps guests find their table and suggests what to eat. When you enter, you will receive an explanation via a screen and you will see where you can sit. Guests must download an app to enjoy this experience. This ensures that practical matters are well organized and the staff has more time for the guests.

No staff concerns

Vromans is not worried about too few staff. His kitchen brigade is complete, including an employee with experience in 3D food printing. For serving guests, there are two students who study AI at Eindhoven University of Technology. Only an assistant manager is still missing, but that does not worry Vromans for the time being.

Starting September 1, Bunkr will be open from Friday to Monday. Until then, the technology will be carefully tested and any adjustments will be made.

Kempenerpop revived with punk rock band Pussy Riot

Dressed in colourful balaclavas and anti-Putin slogans: that’s the feminist and anti-capitalist band Pussy Riot. The band will soon be at festival Kempenerpop in Waalre. A striking headline act…

Socially provocative themes predominate in Pussy Riot’s repertoire. The performance at  Kempener pop festival, which is going to be organised again for the first time since 2019, also tells a story of the band’s protest actions. Precisely the political message, which will be conveyed at Pussy Riot’s performance, is a conscious choice of the event’s organisers. In fact, Pussy Riot’s ideas perfectly match those of the organisation of Kempener Pop, according to festival manager Frank Ploegmakers. “Like the band, we are for inclusiveness and against discrimination: everyone is allowed to be there”.

Conviction

Members of the band became world news in 2012 when they climbed the altar of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior. There they used a so-called “punk prayer” to criticize religious believers and the then re-election of President Putin. Two members were sentenced by Russian authorities to two years of punishment camp. Just before the 2014 Winter Olympics, held in Sochi, Russia, the duo was granted amnesty. With that, their sentence expired.

Singer Maria Alyokhina, one of the two prisoners, has since been detained many times for criticizing President Putin. The last time she was detained was in February 2022, after which she was placed under police surveillance and not allowed to leave her home. But after the outbreak of war with Ukraine, she managed to escape: she cut her ankle bracelet and pretended to be a meal delivery boy.

Risk

The Municipality of Waalre has a standard consultation with the police for this event, but there are no plans for additional security measures. Even Russia expert Michel Krielaars, also a journalist for NRC, sees no harm in the performance. Warning people against Putin’s regime can do no harm, he believes. “You should know, at some point in the Netherlands everyone is drinking a beer or smoking a joint at a pop concert. And we forget that at an hour and a half flight from Amsterdam an incredibly big war is raging in which dozens of people per day are dying”.

The Kempenerpop festival is free to attend on 22, 23 and 24 September. On the first day, Friday that is, Pussy Riot will perform.

Reggae Sundance also popular with little ones

About 20,000 visitors attended Saturday’s music festival Reggae Sundance at  Karpendonkse Plas. Among the reggae lovers were also many families; admission was free for children.

When the sun broke through in the afternoon after a wet start to the day, the festival grounds filled up in no time. In addition to music, there were shops and restaurants apparently worth queuing for quite a long time. The crowd was as diverse as it gets: from middle-aged women to teenage guys with long rasta hair. The atmosphere was relaxed, as befits reggae. There was not an improper word. Occasionally, however, an extremely strong smell of weed could be smelled.

A German family, father, mother and four children, drove all the way from Bonn to attend the festival. “I came for the very last act”, the father, referring to legendary reggae singer Burning Spear, said.
“That one doesn’t start until 22:00, so the kids have to hang in there for a while”. And they seem to be doing just that. Like the rest of the audience, they danced happily to the beats.

Win free tickets to Brabantsedag

Ever since the first procession of artisans in 1958, the Brabantsedag parade has grown into a mobile Brabantian history lesson wrapped in a theatre production, which includes quality acting, make-up, dancing, singing, and costumes. The spectacle attracts forty thousand visitors, not bad for a town of ten thousand.

The main attraction is a massive, mobile theatre spectacle, which is the product of the hard work of (currently) sixteen amateur groups, creating social cohesion as it passes through the community of the Pearl of Brabant. The amateur acting groups manage to portray an entire story during the parade, particularly during each stop lasting a mere handful of minutes. Brabant Day has been added to the National Inventory of Non-Material Cultural Heritage, as set out in the international UNESCO treaty that supports and treasures living habits, traditions, skills and rituals and aids in the passing down of such from generation to generation.
