City to prevent cultural institutions from going under

The large cultural institutions in Eindhoven cannot go under because of the corona crisis. That will however cost the municipality of Eindhoven a large amount of money. This is according to cultuur Eindhoven.

Institutions such as the Effenaar and Muziekgebouw have been closed for three months. Despite anti-coronavirus measures being relaxed, it offers no solution for these institutions.  It could still be months before they can open their doors to the public. It is also unclear how they will reopen and what that would mean financially.

“We’re trying to prevent institutions from suddenly going under” says Tanja Mlaker from cultuur Eindhoven. It is difficult for organisations to adjust to the new limitations. Also when they are allowed to open again.”

De grote podia is dependent on ticket sales and revenue from hospitality. Only allowing 30 to 100 people per performance makes matters complex. It is already clear that would lead to a loss. But closing-down for good is also not an option.

“This is a crucial part of the city that has to be preserved”, says Mlaker. “They can’t go under. The responsibility lies with both sides.”

Cultuur Eindhoven are leading the discussions surrounding financial solutions. One thing is clear – they don’t have to be worried about having less performances and visitors than agreed to for the subsidy.

Last week the municipality started an emergency fund for, amongst others, cultural institutions. It seems it will not be near enough for large venues. Unfortunately, how much money is needed remains uncertain.

A pub crawl with lectures?

0

On Tuesday night, there was a pub crawl which included lectures on the history of Eindhoven.

During the event, historians gave lectures on the history of Eindhoven. It started at 19:00 at Café Wilhelmina. City archaeologist, Nico Arts, gave a short lesson on the early period of the city. The next stop was Café Sands on Stratumseind. Here, cultural historian, Jos Hüsken, gave a talk on the history of the Netherlands’ longest stapstraat (a street with lots of bars, restaurants, and clubs). The pub crawl ended at Café Altstadt with a lecture on the role of the Van Abbemuseum in World War II. Art historian, Evelien Scheltinga, gave that lesson.

The pub crawl was organised following the same type of event that was held in Den Bosch. De Erfgoedbènde (The Heritage Gang), the youth branch of Erfgoed Brabant (Heritage Brabant), is behind the initiative and found the tour to be a success.

Running and much more at Meerhoven 24

0

Meerhoven 24 is a special running event on September 8 and 9 in the district with the same name. Since 2010 every second weekend in September, a maximum of 25 teams run 24 hours for as many laps as possible, with a different theme each year.

Next to the estafette run several other runs are a part of these 24 hours. Aside of the effort and relaxation part of this event, this event was started for the district and the organisers and contenders are connected to Make-A- Wish The Netherlands.

Every year Meerhoven 24 offers a surprising spectacle on stage, with trusted great shows and of
course spectacular newcomers who take to the stage. Of course those of you who are contending and visiting will be supported by a great program. For the children there will be an interactive puppetshow.

Neighbourhood surprise delivery man Aydin with party

0

New shoes, a dress or a book, Aydin Aytekin has been delivering packages in the Woenselse Heide for almost fifteen years. He and his bus have now become such an indispensable part of the Eindhoven neighbourhood that the local residents surprised him with a party. “I always know what to say but in this situation I didn’t know how to react.”

And that surprise was not without reason, because in the eyes of the neighbourhood he is more than a delivery man. “I remember him bringing my Christmas package, but no one was home. Then he walked to Lidl, where my wife works, to give it to my wife,” says a local resident. Resident Jessica Faassen confirms that Aydin always goes the extra mile. “If you’re not there, he will send a message or honk if he has a package for you.”

Because of that commitment, a surprise party was organised for him. “You often see negative remarks about delivery people online but they deserve be put in a positive light for once,” Jessica explains. When Aydin arrived at the party, he was speechless for a moment. “It was really a very special experience.” The delivery man was showered with gifts: a beer package, chocolate and vouchers. “It wasn’t even about the gifts for me, the thought behind it was just very special.”

Aydin was very happy with the surprise party and hopes to continue working in the area until his retirement. “This neighbourhood is very special. I have worked in many neighbourhoods in Eindhoven, but I think this is the best.”

No skating rink in the city this year: tall present tower instead

Anyone who has looked around the 18 Septemberplein in Eindhoven has probably noticed something. This week, a real present tower has been erected. With this initiative, entrepreneurs’ association Stichting Binnenstad Eindhoven (SBE) wants to attract more people to the city centre.

It is something different than the traditional Christmas market. The SBE wants to end the year in a festive way with the ‘Wrap up the Year’ campaign. “In Eindhoven we like to do things a bit differently. This December, the city has been wrapped with Eindhoven gift paper” said Mariette Vetter of SBE.

Eye catcher

The ten-metre-high present tower, which was financed by the entrepreneurs themselves, is intended, according to Vetter, as an eye-catcher to guide people to the shops. “You can see the structure from a great distance, for example when you come from the station. You can’t go inside the tower, but diorama boxes with a winter landscape can be viewed within two of the presents.”

Skating rink

Within the ‘Wrap up the Year’ campaign there is no room for a Christmas market and an ice rink. “We thought an ice rink was a bit outdated and therefore not suitable for Eindhoven. The Christmas atmosphere will certainly be there with lighting, colourful shop windows, a music programme and other activities in the city. This was something we wanted to do before, but was postponed due to corona virus.” said Vetter.

According to Vetter, the energy crisis has nothing to do with these innovative plans, although that does of course play a role. “An ice rink uses copious amounts of energy, so we won’t have those costs this year. Although we are putting more money into mood lighting than in previous years due to the energy crisis.”

Eckart school and childcare finally open

0

After decades of planning and waiting, children in Eindhoven’s Eckart district can go to school in a new school building. The new location for primary school and childcare on Weegschaalstraat opened its doors on Monday.

“There were already plans some 25 years ago. We had to wait a long time for it but we now have a beautiful new school building at last,” says Moniek van Rooij, director of De Kimme, the primary school’s new name. For a long time, no suitable land was available. There were also discussions about financing.

Written off

The 300 children of the primary school and the Billies childcare were initially spread over two locations in outdated buildings. The buildings were poorly insulated and had rotten window frames. “Now everyone is together in one building. So siblings are also back in school together again.”

Van Rooij is happy with the possibilities offered by the new location. “We now have learning areas where we can work across classes. That is today’s education.” The new building is also energy-efficient. “We have the highest possible number of stars. That means a heat pump, solar panels and a basin that collects and reuses water.

Cost

The new building cost about seven million euros, according to municipal documents.

Carnival: large mirror tent

0

It has been discussed for years. Carnival 2019 it will finally happen. A large mirror tent will be built at Eindhoven’s Wilhelminaplein.

Inside this large tent, the most important thing will be the creation of an authentic, old-fashioned carnival feeling. Nostalgic party music will help! “Carnivals without that commercial carnival and house music, but instead with bands and karaoke”, mentions one of the organisers, Joep Verheijen.

The organisers respond to a need for carnival parties among “older youngsters”. However, this does specifically not mean, “only the over-forties carnival enthusiasts are welcome. In this large tent, everybody is welcome to join in the fun or to just have a nice chat”.

Carnival in “Lampegat”

In Lampegat (Eindhoven) carnival kicks off Friday 1st of March and ends Tuesday 5th of March 2019. Preliminary festivities already started with “Lampegats Dansmarietje Toernooi” on 20th of January.

Other preliminary activities, not all of which are open to all or for which special tickets need to be obtained:

10 February: Lampegatse Vrouwkes Zitting
17 February: Haone Boerenblaos Festijn
21 February: Federatieavond
22 February: Slaatjesbal
23 February: Prince Positivo visit
23 February: Groot Federatiebal
28 February: Pekske Pronken

One of the most important Carnival events in Lampegat will be the traditional parade of floats, scheduled for Saturday 2nd of March 2019.

Two new festivals coming to Eindhoven

0

Two festivals, “Progressive Alliance” and “Prognosis”, are coming to Eindhoven.

Progressive Alliance

The first to come to Eindhoven, is “Progressive Alliance”. This festival will take place at the Effenaar, on the 4th of November.

The line-up of Progressive Alliance includes Astrosaur and the Noise Rockers of Arabrot from Norway, Ne Obliviscaris from Australia and VUUR.

The band The Ocean, from Germany, will perform music from their brand new album: ‘Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic’.

Prognosis

The new “Prognosis festival” will take place on 22 and 23 March 2019.

The first confirmed bands are Haken and Witchcraft. Soen and Sleepmakeswaves will also come to play at this festival.

Apart from the festival in the Effenaar, the city centre will also be dominated by progressive rock music. “Special performances at special locations, exhibitions, lectures and clinics make the festival broader than just the Effenaar and prog music,” promises the organizers.

Tickets for both festivals are still available via Ticketmaster.

Carnival without usual kick-off party

0

Next year’s Carnival won’t start in the usual way.

The regional media group, Omroep Brabant, has decided not to start Eindhoven’s Carnaval 2021 with the well-known 3 Uurkes Vurraf. Because of the anti-corona measures, the jam-packed party can’t go ahead. It usually attracts about 1,600 people to the Pullman Hotel.

Omroep Brabant and the other organisations involved think it would be irresponsible to hold the event as usual. “People’s health comes first”, the organisers say. Rules are more important than the party.

Alternative

An alternative solution is still being considered. Omroep Brabant editor-in-chief, Renzo Veenstra, says, “That the start of Carnival should be celebrated is certain. But finding a way to do this responsibly is still a challenge.”

The organisation hopes that they can organise the part as usual in 2022. That’s 3 Uurkes Vurraf‘s 33rd anniversary.
